Oakland, Fremont police descend on Your Black Muslim Bakery

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 3, 2007 09:43 AM

Several Bay area readers are sending word of breaking news there this morning that may be tied to the awful execution of a veteran Oakland journalist yesterday:

Oakland and Fremont police have surrounded the Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland.

Television stations KPIX and KTVU report that S.W.A.T team negotiators and various high-ranking police officials are at the scene.

The incident is happening along San Pablo Avenue near the border of Oakland and Emeryville. A command center has been set up in Emeryville, but there are few other details at this hour…

longtime Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey was reportedly researching an investigative piece into Your Black Muslim Bakery before he was shot and killed just yesterday morning.

It remains unclear whether that killing is connected to today’s heavy police activity at the bakery.

The bakery’s website is here. If it sounds familiar, you’ve probably read of the store owners’ tangles with law enforcement. The SFChronicle reported in 2005:

An Oakland bakery with a cheery red sign out front — “Your Black Muslim Bakery” — was thrust into the criminal spotlight again Tuesday when police arrested one of founder Yusuf Bey’s sons in connection with vandalism to two liquor stores.

Bey created the bakery in 1968 and built a powerful enterprise based on baked goods, Muslim faith, local politics and, police say, strong-arm tactics.

For decades, members of Bey’s religious sect have been suspected of using violence and intimidation to secure their business interests, which include four bakeries, a Muslim school, a security business and an apartment building across from the main bakery on San Pablo Avenue in northwest Oakland where many of Bey’s relatives and bakery workers live.

Bey died of colon cancer in October 2003 while awaiting trial on 27 counts of sex crimes, including at least one count in which DNA identified him as the father of a child of a 13-year-old girl. His followers have claimed he fathered more than 40 children.

A real practitioner of the ROP, he was:

Bey’s followers have been accused of assaulting people with whom they had religious or business differences, and such stories have circulated in Oakland for decades.

In 1994, members of the organization allegedly beat an Oakland man with a police officer’s heavy-duty flashlight and threatened to kill the white police officers who came to investigate.

The same year, Bey ran for mayor and received 5 percent of the vote, and his 21-year-old son Akbar was shot and killed outside an Oakland night club. At the time, his father said the death was over “nothing important.”

More on Chauncey Bailey’s murder here.

It’s nice that Islam gives these child molesters a ‘religious freedom’ out from facing criminal charges. How utterly ridiculous and strange to name your store, “Your Black Muslim Bakery”. I never attribute baked goods to anything religious unless it’s ‘unlevened bread’. Kosher bread? Halal bread? Doesn’t make sense to me.

It could only happen and even be mildly successful in the San Francisco area.

From reading some of the details, this sounds like an ‘on-going criminal enterprise’ – RICO statute anyone?

Amazing what some people will tolerate when the perpetrator is black / muslim or another minority.

Discrimination / hate against gays, child molestation, etc….
And this guy gets 5% of a mayoral vote?

Sounds like a situation they have going on in Milwaukee, where Michael McGee Jr., city alderman, with a history of hate speech, racism, illegal activity, threats against others, etc., keeps getting re-elected by his constituents and held on a pedestal. Finally, however, he’s under indictment by the feds and seems to be going away for a long time.

Unfortunately, many in his community are still rallying around him claiming persecution.

OK, not sure if this is related to the “Bakery” on 17th and WEbster in Oakland, CA. Regardless, I’ve been past a “Your Black Muslim Bakery” on my way to my FAVORITE vietnamise restaurant on more than a few occassions.

This particular bakery’s employees are extreamly hostile. (They can be spotted easily hanging on the sidewalk right outside their bakery in long white robes and some type of white cap…) I have a friend who says (i do not know this first hand) but they will NOT sell anything to “whites” and/or “non-muslims” and they will kick you out of their store promptly if you are either.

What I CAN tell you first hand is that they were very intimidating men who worked there who would Glare at my friends and i as we passed along the sidewalk. Almost intimidating us as if we were walking through “their” territory.

It was definately a 10 on the tension scale. They seemed to be very angry people.

From the Elijah Educational Center website, linked from the Bakery website:

    http://www.ybmb.com/school.html

Interesting to note the emphasis on mandatory parent involvement, as well as full-year schooling, dress code, and strict disciplinary codes. Also ‘Close Order Drilling for Discipline’.

Compare this to public schools in this country and how they are run and supported.

It is no wonder that these supporters are so adament in their beliefs and disciplined in their actions.

If Catholic schools were this strict, there’d be ‘expose’ stories of the apparent brain-washing of our children.
