The new and improved NYTimes: Now, with “fewer words per page”

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 6, 2007 08:47 AM

To save money, the NYTimes had reduced the width of its pages by an inch and a half (via E&P):

Over the years, The New York Times has tended to think big, but tomorrow it will have to adapt to a new smaller-is- beautiful era.

In a front page note to readers this morning, the paper stated that the print edition they will hold tomorrow will be decidedly more compact.

Beginning Monday, the Times “will reduce the width of its pages by an inch and a half,” to a 12-inch standard, the paper declared.

“The move will cut newsprint expenses and, in some printing press locations, will make special configurations unnecessary. Slight modifications in design will preserve the look and texture of The Times, with all existing features and sections, and” — it admitted at the end — “somewhat fewer words per page.”

The Times had originally planned to make the shift next March. It is far from the first paper to shrink in size in recent years — see USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and more — but the new look tomorrow promises to cause much comment.

Help with the cost-slashing initiative: Feel free to leave suggestions about what else they should cut out!

Hopefully this is the beginning of the final death spiral for a once great newspaper. The outright treason and sedition exposing many of our classified programs, which were actually working against the Terrorists and the extreme leftist views are bringing the chickens home to roost. They have lost the trust of Americans and we are displaying our displeasure with our wallets.

I’m sure that many people have already suggested this brilliant move but if the New York Times would leave the paper’s formatting the way that it currently is, and then cut off the inch and a half, including whatever leftist words might be on it, circulation might just increase. Then they could continue cutting the paper down and maybe eventually circulation would level off as Americans try to play the latest game: decipher what the New York Times would’ve said today if it weren’t the size of a thimble.

What, like they’re doing any good now?

Moonbats should be able to get behind this one. Just need to sell it to the Goracle and the world can be saved and the NYT out of business.

Someone has to do it, I will defend the NY Times. First, most people who condemn it, don’t read it anyway. Second, I have read the Times every day (unless I was on vacation) for 25 years. There have been plenty of missteps–Jayson Blair and Judy “We got to destroy Iraq’s WMD” Miller are the worst examples. But, the Times investigated itself and their Executive and Managing Editors were fired for it. Too bad the Bush Administration doesn’t have the same accountability. Third, all most agree: The Times is far from perfect, but it’s the best overall newspaper in the U.S. and the paper of record. Fourth, just because MM was turned down for an internship at the Times while at college, should not mean she should constantly attack it.

How can the insensitive NY Times editorial staff do this? Don’t they know that there are many homeless folks in NYC who depend on the Times for warmth? They’re making life for these folks even more difficult than it already is! Let’s lobby Congress to combat the trend of shrinking newspapers! Let’s start a government program or something. We’ll be federally subsidized in no time.

Other than needing something specific in the paper, like a coupon, I still refuse to subsidize these socialists. I haven’t bought a paper just to read it in years, and I dearly enjoy watching their death spirals.

The NYT won’t go out of business – too many nutroots on that pestilent island to let her completely die. But she will become more and more marginalized. Oh, yes, that will be sweet to watch…
