Your Black Muslim Bakery employee charged in journo’s murder

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 7, 2007 05:25 PM

Just in from SFgate.com:

A handyman being held in the slaying of newspaper editor Chauncey Bailey was formally charged with murder today, while two other men arrested in last week’s raid on Oakland’s Your Black Muslim Bakery were expected to be charged in a separate case.

Devaughndre Broussard, 19, who worked at the bakery on San Pablo Avenue, is to be arraigned this afternoon in Alameda County Superior Court on charges of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm — specifically a shotgun– for allegedly killing Bailey, Editor of the Oakland Post, last week.

The downtown courthouse was operating under heightened security today, with double the number of Alameda County sheriff’s deputies on hand to man the metal detector and to stand watch outside the building.

Broussard confessed to using a shotgun to kill Bailey on Thursday at 14th and Alice streets in downtown Oakland, just blocks from his office. Police said Broussard had been angry over Bailey’s investigation of the finances of the bakery, which filed for bankruptcy in October.

Police say he didn’t act alone. Stay tuned.

Previous coverage.

And in case you missed it, here’s Christopher Hitchens on “Brutality by the Bay:”

Now, again, I am just asking, but what if this racket had been named the White Christian or Aryan Nations Cookie Parlor? (Motto and mission statement: “Don’t F*** With Us.”) I think that Oakland’s mayor, Ron Dellums—who I was startled to find was still alive—would have joined a picket line around the store (as would I). The same would doubtless have been true of Rep. Barbara Lee, in whose district the YBMB was situated. But instead, in its role as a “community business,” the YBMB enjoyed warm support and endorsement from both the mayor and the congresswoman. And the guns for past and future slayings were inside the store.

If this isn’t softness on crime, then the term is meaningless. Residents have been complaining for a long time about the atmosphere of hatred and violence—and about what some have called the YBMB’s attempt to “cleanse” the neighborhood, either of godless liquor stores on the model of jihadism or simply of business rivals and journalistic critics. What were the police doing all this time, and why did Chauncey Bailey have to be murdered before they could be moved to act? Perhaps they were doing what they do best: confiscating marijuana and rousting whores so as to painlessly improve the crime statistics. I called Bob Valladon, the extremely rude and graceless head of the Oakland police union, but I didn’t even get to put my question before receiving a large flea in my ear. Other California law-enforcement officials were adamant in refusing to be quoted in any way. I can’t say I blame them: Thousands of their voters and citizens are living in Third World conditions of fear, with a “no-snitch” policy openly enforced at gunpoint, and they cannot be troubled to do anything about it.

First, I want to stick up for a good cop.

I went to school with Bob. Two years ago somebody did a hit piece on him over how much overtime he earned policing at A’s games at the Coliseum. Not a very good place to be after dark in Oakland. He’s a fixture at Raider games too. (Flying batteries on your head, anybody?) It was in the paper and on tv. They tore him a new one. But he survived it and continues to represent.

I am not sure what Hitch was doing talking to the police union rep about a street crime. Dead end.

Anyways, I hope people don’t get the wrong idea about Bob Valladon. He’s one of the good guys around here.

Not defending the joint, or its leaders and troops. The point is don’t be surprised if the story fizzles with the conviction of Bey and Company (son of the founder). Authorities have been after this crowd for decades on sex charges, racketeering, and murder. It would appear the jig is up.

I doubt the cops are going to find ties to jihad. These guys aren’t purist enough for that crowd. Not saying this in broad brush terms- I am talking about this particular “bakery”.

Do the same thing Black Muslim’s have always done: start over and operate until their leadership corrupts itself raising money in the community, taking their cut, and sending the rest to Farrakhan and his cronies.

If this leads to anybody it is up higher on the food chain to the point where the high-priced legal counsel comes into play defending the Nation of Islam.

The Nation of Islam is operating much as the Mafia and other organized street gangs did in their heyday. Sometimes this leads to integration/absorption into civilized society, but usually not. In some of these neighborhoods, the people mistakenly believe they are taking it back.

Unfortunately, sending this thug to prison only adds to the Nation of Islam poisonous presence already there; in less than 20 years, he will be back on the street, selecting his next victim.

The Oakland PD has the full spectrum of good and evil on their payroll.

Crime is down significantly in OakTown. The average number of *shots fired calls* on any given weekend during the mid-90s was 700. The murder rate has come down to 100 to 120
per year the past 3 years.

For all the criticism Jerry Brown received during his tenure as Mayor, he did some good. It doesn’t appear that Mayor Dellums will follow suit.

Gang violence is the biggest problem next to unemployment and job flight (thank you Barbara Lee for your anti-military base/facility closings). The three go hand-in-hand. The Oakland School District is in State Receivership and selling its real estate.

Massive systemic problems with the perception among poor blacks that they have to take matters into their own hands. And when they do, the consequences are violent and disastrous.

San Francisco is no better off. And the jiberal “solutions” just make it worse in both places.

Killings Surge in Oakland, and Officials Are Unable to Explain Why

The shootings are part of a cresting wave of violence in Oakland, which recorded 148 homicides in 2006, a 57 percent increase over 2005 and the highest number in 11 years.

Hmm this is a little old so what is the count now in Oakland?

Oakland has had 79 homicides this year, just behind its pace of last year, when the city recorded 145 killings, the most since 1993

Since 1998, when Jerry Brown became mayor, crime in Oakland has increased every year. No Jerry Brown did not decrease crime in that city.
