Friday Factor Update: Video link added

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 10, 2007 05:01 PM

I’m guest-hosting The O’Reilly Factor again tonight and we’ll have a good, meaty show for you: immigration, the Newark case, Pearl Jam, the market, and more. Tune in at 8pm Eastern.

Update: I just finished taping the show. Just a heads-up that we might get preempted early in the show because of breaking news on the mine story. The show repeats at 11pm Eastern. In any case, we’ll be sure to have highlights at Hot Air.

Update: Video highlights here.

If there is a band out there I dislike more, I cannot think of them. Eddie Vedder and his surly, “I’m rich, I’m miserable” routine wore thin 5 minutes after it started.

Homeless people cannot help looking grungy. Million dollar spoiled brats in Seattle should shave, put on clean pants and shirts (especially when testifying before Congress), and sip their lattes in silence.

I miss the happy glam rock from 1986-1992. It was optimistic. The grunge era from 1993-1998 was a disaster, with a song about a kid who commits suicide in school, with society to blame. Lovely.

Bring back the 80s, and relegate the grungers to irrelevance. They are the liberals of music…complaining about nonsense while having more money than the rest of us.

Oh, and they are anti-war because they supposedly stand for stuff…like getting stoned.

Well done Michelle! The last segment was great and you did very well against that attorney. You got him riled up.

You could have asked also if it said ‘I have a bomb’ would that make a difference. That was a great point that I didn’t think about and I was siding with the attorney before you brought it up.

On a plane too, the pilot is sovereign. For any reason the pilot can say he doesn’t want someone on his plane and the person doesn’t fly. He’s got much more authority than the cabbies in Minnesota. It isn’t a civil liberty situation. The pilot doesn’t even need a reason (remember the Seinfeld episode?)

Now having said that, let me armchair quarterback. I’d never go on TV anyway so please understand that you are my favorite American and I am only saying this to help. I would suggest trying to eliminate the word ‘um’ when you host on TV. You are great in your conversational interview style, but ‘um’ is annoying a bit. Review the show and count how many times you say ‘um’. Once again, I’m just trying to help. I couldn’t do nearly as well as you do, and I’m thankful that you do what you do. I’m just sayin.

It was a good show though. Well done.

    A terrific job.

I’ve seen the following manifestation over and over and love it (tonight it occured with the pro-illegal-mexican lawyer): During the segment introduction, the guest who you can easily guess will be in conflict with Michelle sits smiling, smirking, looking very self-satisfied in a dual attempt to sell himself personally to the audience to sway people on the content of his viewpoint while simultaniously calming his own TV jitters. Debate begins, guest starts off with a smiling, extremely patronizing tone of voice as though speaking to a small, confused child and finding the whole experience gently amusing. Fast forward six minutes: guest is now looking like a vet ill-suited to warfare who saw one day too many on the front lines, complete with ten-mile stare and slightly ashen pallor. Vocal delivery, formerly enthusiatic and energetic, is now diminished and barren of confidence. Guest debate content now amounts to vauge and unconvincing generalizations, often punctuated with disconnected non-sequitors. Much self-sorrow bleeds through.

God, for those of us who rely on a few voices to speak up against the MSM, those moments are such a happy catharsis. Thank you, Michelle. ;-)

By the way, Michelle, are you aware of any pundits who are planning to make much noise on the issue fo the Dems not debating on Fox. As a TV behind-the-sceneser, I see readily the damage that continued MSM silence on the issue is doing.

Zorro: “I would love to know how the Michelle factor (i.e. sitting in for O’Reilly) translates into ratings (increase or decrease).

I haven’t seen the recent numbers, but a couple of months ago Michelle was proving to be a very healthy transfusion into the body, and a no-brainer it is: viewers like a pretty face (no sexism intended), she has one; Conservatives need a PC-unassailable minority female (a media standard the libs themselves created, ha ha)presence who can lay it on the line and to conservative’s delight, does she ever; her vivisection of unruly or dishonest guests is hugely entertaining – and first and foremost TV must be entertaining or all else is lost. Once Michelle settled in, anyone who knows the slightest bit of this biz from the inside could see her inevitable, skyrocket emergence easily.

Magic 8-Ball says: “There is no question about it”. ;-)

I’ve mentioned several times now that Michelle ought to have a weekend slot on FNC, and Michelle herself has not responded to any of this talk in the comments here. So what about it Michelle? Am I wasting my breath, what do you think about HotAirTV w/Malkin? You haven’t said anything so far, and I’m beginning to wonder if you think that’s out of the question because you don’t have time or something. Is my vision futile, or is that something you would like to do? Maybe your silence indicates something going on behind the scenes, like negotiations with Ailes, maybe? One can hope.

WHOA! Back up. I never said she got her job because she was “cute” (never used that word) and asian. Rather, she is a brilliant and lucky (for us) combination of “factors” which make her a spectaular juggernaut against the left, and yes that includes the leftist standard of pretty faces and minority ethnicities. For the record, I’m sure Michelle got her factor gig on the basis of her journalistic excellence and debating prowess, both of which are beyond reproach. However, there can be no doubt that her good looks played some part in the decision to place her where she is, and that’s just the showbiz aspect of commercial television which is entertainment first and all else second. We shouldn’t kid ourselves that all excellent journalists are handsome or beautiful and that’s why most newscasts are filled with people who fit those descriptions. Pretty faces are simply easier to watch, and that can be important during heated debates or the reporting of bad news – that’s just television news 101.

But don’t try to put me on record as saying that she got the job because of those superficial qualities. Indeed, in context, I’m pretty sure I made clear that quite the reverse was true, though those superficial aspects certainly matter in television. More specifically, her appearance elicits more viewer sympathy than one gets from, for example, O’Reilly, and with the media 8 – 1 against conservatives, Michelle is for all the reasons for her effective televison presence a terrific general to have in the field

Yes C_Cat, it’s definitely a visual medium. Which has led over the years to many good-looking “journalists” who are lightweights in the “research and understanding” departments. Emphasis on good hair and stentorian tones, never mind if the story is hopelessly wrong. Michelle’s biggest strength is the effort she puts into researching facts – she never sleeps apparently – and that gives her a huge edge in a debate. OK, second greatest strength, her IQ might be #1. It’s the left – as you note – who have been criticizing the right for supposedly not having minorities and women, and now – “bam” as Emeril might say. Smart, well-prepared, Asian heritage, female, and ‘visual” (no offense meant MM). She’s a slam dunk for TV.

    You got it. ;-)

Additionally, though, my point was also that because of all those qualities (and a quick-witted ability to hang the opposition with the rope of their arrogance and hypocracy) she’s difficult for the left to attack – yes, they do it, but it never really feels right, never has legs. So we have a brilliant conservative voice in the media who has a strong degree of immunity from attacks from the left, do in part to a set of standards they themselves created. And that, too, is just lovely. ;-)
