Your Black Muslim Bakery update: More trouble, more CYA

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 16, 2007 02:57 PM

Three Your Black Muslim Bakery staffers will be in court today on separate matters:

Devaughndre Broussard was set to enter a plea in the murder of veteran black journalist Chauncey Bailey, who was investigating the bakery.

Yusuf Bey the fourth and his brother, Joshua, are also due in court, where they’re charged in a separate case involving kidnapping and torture charges of a woman.

So, who else was helping to prop up the thug-dominated neighborhood enterprise? InsideBayArea.com reports:

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums and U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee are not the only prominent East Bay politicians who, despite its tainted reputation, pledged support for Your Black Muslim Bakery by asking a bankruptcy judge not to dissolve the business to pay off creditors.

Assemblyman Sandre Swanson, D-Oakland, joined Dellums and Lee — both his former bosses — and wrote a letter to U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Edward D. Jellen last month on behalf of the bakery when asked by a former associate of the late founder Yusuf Bey.
But Oakland City Councilmember Larry Reid (Elmhurst-East Oakland) said he refused a similar request because bakery associates failed to repay a $1.1 million loan from the city of Oakland to establish a health care training program, and because of well-publicized criminal charges brought against many of the bakery’s leaders the past few years, long before a bakery handyman confessed to killing Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey on Aug. 2.

Your Black Muslim Bakery, heavily mortgaged, deep in debt to the IRS and other creditors, and beset by internal battles for rightful ownership after the death of founder Yusuf Bey, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October. The company faced liquidation after failing to file the proper paperwork and make payments to the U.S. trustee’s office.

Is Swanson sorry? Apparently not:

Although Swanson could not be reached directly, his communications director Amber Maltbie said her boss was not aware of the bakery leaders’ problems with the law, and she said the office needs to do a better job vetting such requests in the future. “The letter was written based on the history of the bakery,” she said. “They’ve been in the community a long time, and they have done a lot for the community, although it’s clear that is no longer the case.

“We made a mistake, we need to be more diligent,” she added.

But a statement from Swanson issued a short time later via Swanson’s chief of staff Larry Broussard was not at all apologetic. The letter was a routine response to a routine request from a small business, nothing more, nothing less, he said.

“My office routinely receives request for support and assistance from small businesses and organizations in the district to insure fair treatment in bankruptcy proceedings,” the statement from Swanson read. “In our response to the Your Black Muslim Bakery’s standard small business request, we prepared our standard request for fairness to the Bankruptcy Court, while at the same time respecting the judicial separation of powers and responsibilities.”

Broussard said it should serve as Swanson’s official statement on the matter, and Maltbie’s earlier response did not represent the official position of the assemblyman or his office.

At Sweetness & Light, more light shed on the bakery’s real estate scams. Funded with taxpayer dollars.

Also being funded with taxpayer dollars: Yusuf Bey’s defense bill

An attorney for the former head of the Your Black Muslim Bakery will be paid for by the taxpayers.

KCBS’ Bob Melrose reports Yusef Bey IV says he cannot afford his own lawyer in a kidnapping case.

Yusef Bey IV, his brother Joshua and another man were picked up in a police raid at the Your Black Muslim Bakery earlier this month. The raid happened one day after journalist Chauncey Bailey was murdered allegedly by a handyman at the bakery.

Bey and the others are charged with kidnapping a mother and her daughter last May. Bey was also charged with 12 counts of forgery connected to another case.

But Bey says he can’t afford a lawyer so one will be appointed to him. But since another defendant in the case is being represented by the Public Defender’s Office, a private attorney must be hired.

Peachy.

Yeah, but it ain’t like they’re gonna hire Cochren… It’ll be some nobody, most likely, and I could be mistaken, but the fees the city pays are already set, and not all that high.

Ya think? I can see some ordinary joe taxpayer not being up on the latest problems that this business was involved in – but an area politician?

I would wager that the letter was written out of fear of reprisal if they didn’t – like claims to the media of racism or discrimination.

Rather than doing their homework, these politicians let their political instincts rule over prudent investigation.

Talk about a truck and trailer load of red flags.
How about an itemized list of exactly where that 1.1 mil went?

A lot of violent criminal behavior occurred over a period of years right under the city councilman’s noses and nobody got a clue?
