More questions for The New Republic

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 20, 2007 09:58 AM

In addition to the questions Peter Beinart should have been asked, here are more questions from Richard Miniter of Pajamas Media, who looks at how TNR got fooled:

An insider-turned-whistleblower and the fabricator’s former fiancée, as well as other sources, have spoken to PajamasMedia.com—providing a plethora of new details that raise new questions.

Those questions include: Did the fabricator’s wife, Elspeth Reeve, fact-check her husband’s articles? Did her staff position make other fact-checkers go easy on him? Why didn’t Reeve’s knowledge of Beauchamp’s character and history make her skeptical of his work? (Remember the old journalist saw: “If your mother says she loves you, check it out.”) Did Foer’s friendship with Beauchamp affect the fact-checkers or provoke Foer to defend him in the face of mounting evidence? And, why was the whistle-blower the only New Republic staffer to be fired? Finally, what does the magazine intend to do to ensure that it does not get fooled again?

So many questions. Any answers?

I seriously doubt we will get any answers that are either truthful or meaningful … everything we hear will be carefully crafted to deflect all responsibility away from TNR …

TNR’s actions are typical of the Drive-by media.

They roll past and lob a few jabs, only to speed away and never come back to the scene they created….

Only this time - MM and others have flattened the tires and now they’ve locked the car doors and refuse to exit the vehicle to explain their actions…

Likewise, I read Miniter’s article, and agreem with the above assessment. The terms “sociopathic” and “malignant narcissism” are wholly appropriate in application to Mr. Beauchamp.

What was most interesting was reading about the pseudo-journalistic culture that has taken over at TNR:

    - Franklin Foer has his ideological blinders on so tightly that he can’t even recognize how he’s projectingg his own mental rigidity and close-mindedness on those who have pointed out the multiple, fatal flaws in Beauchamp’s accounts; and

    - The objectivity-destroying relationship between the author of those accounts and one of the “fact checkers” at TNR evidently failed to raise any eyebrows before, during or after Beauchamp’s fabulations put into print.

Bottom line is, Beauchamp represents the third time in recent memory that TNR has let itself get snookered by its writers. In baseball and some criminal jurisdictions you get three strikes before you’re out; how many swishes does TNR get?

Precisely! I don’t think they were duped. I think that they didn’t care if it was legit or not. They were just happy to have a story that painted the troops in some barbaric light.

IMO, the question is what consequences to TNR?

None. There will be no change in practices at TNR. It sure won’t be loss of readership. Those people are true believers.

I would like to see several libel suits for millions of dollars each from the service men and women that TNR defamed. Then there might be some change.

Actions have consequences, unless it is a liberal propaganda outlet.

I agree, I don’t believe they were fooled. They have an ideology to promote, and facts must not stand in the way.

Whether or not this particular story is correct, the truth is that Iraq is going badly. The surge may be having some effect in some neighborhoods of Baghdad, but the political situation is going black diamond downhill. The only positive reports come from visits by politicians, visits that are carefully managed by the military.

    LGM,

what would be better for Iraq? leaving there in a state of turmoil and civil strife? Or in a free and Democratic Iraq which is a friend to freedom and western ideals?

    DaveC,

Which would be better, every marriage being loving bliss or some ending in bitter divorce? How about nobody getting cancer vs. some people dying of it?

OK, point taken. Still, there is no way to win in Iraq, at least not without far more resources than anyone left or right is willing to commit.

A withdrawal would not deprive Iraq of a democracy since that’s not happening anyway.
