OK, point taken. Still, there is no way to win in Iraq, at least not without far more resources than anyone left or right is willing to commit.

A withdrawal would not deprive Iraq of a democracy since that's not happening anyway.

DaveC,

Which would be better, every marriage being loving bliss or some ending in bitter divorce? How about nobody getting cancer vs. some people dying of it?

Bottom line: you have given utopian options we do not have, at least not for a price any of you is willing to pay, chickenhawk.

LGM,

what would be better for Iraq? leaving there in a state of turmoil and civil strife? Or in a free and Democratic Iraq which is a friend to freedom and western ideals?

Whether or not this particular story is correct, the truth is that Iraq is going badly. The surge may be having some effect in some neighborhoods of Baghdad, but the political situation is going black diamond downhill. The only positive reports come from visits by politicians, visits that are carefully managed by the military.

Did you see the NYTimes Op Ed yesterday?

Finally, what does the magazine intend to do to ensure that it does not get fooled again?

I agree, I don't believe they were fooled. They have an ideology to promote, and facts must not stand in the way.

IMO, the question is what consequences to TNR?

None. There will be no change in practices at TNR. It sure won't be loss of readership. Those people are true believers.

I would like to see several libel suits for millions of dollars each from the service men and women that TNR defamed. Then there might be some change.

Actions have consequences, unless it is a liberal propaganda outlet.

Yes, and now this is becoming an epidemic. I'm sure we'll hear all about this from the MSM. Where's the NYT editorial from the soldiers on our side?

I read the entire PJM article. Beauchamp is one scary, creepy guy.

Likewise, I read Miniter's article, and agreem with the above assessment. The terms "sociopathic" and "malignant narcissism" are wholly appropriate in application to Mr. Beauchamp.

What was most interesting was reading about the pseudo-journalistic culture that has taken over at TNR:

- Franklin Foer has his ideological blinders on so tightly that he can't even recognize how he's projectingg his own mental rigidity and close-mindedness on those who have pointed out the multiple, fatal flaws in Beauchamp's accounts; and

- The objectivity-destroying relationship between the author of those accounts and one of the "fact checkers" at TNR evidently failed to raise any eyebrows before, during or after Beauchamp's fabulations put into print.

Bottom line is, Beauchamp represents the third time in recent memory that TNR has let itself get snookered by its writers. In baseball and some criminal jurisdictions you get three strikes before you're out; how many swishes does TNR get?
