Another suspect of “undetermined” immigration status arrested in Newark murders
But, you know, it’s “irrelevant” how he got here, why and how he was allowed to stay, and why it’s so damned hard for the feds to figure out what exactly his immigration status is:
The last suspect to be arrested in connection to the execution-style killings of three college students pleaded not guilty on Tuesday during his first court appearance.
Standing with his hands shackled in front of him in a white collared shirt and light colored pants, Melvin Jovel spoke softly and answered several questions from the judge, including whether he has a green card, to which he answered no.
Jovel said he had no other charges pending, was not on probation and had been living with his family in Elizabeth for the past five months. He confirmed that he had lived in an apartment complex in Newark’s Ivy Hill section across the street from the scene of the murders. At least two of the other suspects lived in the same complex…Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Thomas A. McTigue said Jovel’s immigration status is “unclear.” Though Jovel, who authorities have said is from Honduras, told the judge on Tuesday that he does not have a Social Security number, McTigue said a passport was seized from Jovel when he was arrested.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Jovel, ICE spokesman Michael Gilhooly said Tuesday. A detainer means that if Jovel made bail, he would be turned over to federal authorities.
Meanwhile, fellow suspect Rodolfo Godinez is fighting extradition. His hearing in Maryland, where he was apprehended, is scheduled for Sept. 20. And clueless Newark mayor Cory Booker acknowledged gang “overtones” in the killings. Via tipster William A., here’s video of Newark victims’ family members at a suspect’s arraignment today.

All I can really do when hearing stuff like this is shake my head and wonder how we, as a country, have become so dangerously oblivious.

Thanks again for keeping us up to date on those that continue to commit the criminal acts most American’s aren’t willing to commit. How freaking hard is it for someone to figure out an individual’s immigration status. Came here from Honduras, but does he have a passport with a visa, a green card, or social security number? Unless this type of valid identification can be provided it sounds like a slam dunk to me.
I am encouraged that someone is finally paying some lip service to illegal immigration. Although the only politicians I am currently willing to believe on this are those that stood up against the “Amnesty Bill.” Too bad Hunter and Tancredo don’t stand a chance for POTUS, I like the way they think.
Too bad the GOP voters are determined to repeat their mistake with Bush, would be more like it. They have the chance to correct that mistake now but seem set on Giuliani, a Bush clone.
Tom Tancredo says a lot of things that may come across as being taboo, but I think they really need to be said. I’m not sure if he is saying these things in a desperate last ditch attempt to drum up votes, or if he feels that he has nothing to lose and therefore is just not as afraid as the other candidates are. Much of what he has to say is tough for many people to swallow, but in this day and age this stuff needs to be said.

“Undetermined” or “unknown” immigration status is always going to = “illegal”, just like when you see a Congressman or Senator mentioned in an unflattering news story and his party designation isn’t mentioned, it’s going to = D.
The simple reason is that politicians at all levels starting with white house have sold Americans out.

IMHO, it is too soon to speculate one way or another. Besides, to vote on speculation of who will untimately win, defeates the purpose of voting, doesn’t it?

Could be gang initiation as Michelle pointed out in another post. But it could also be one of those thrill killings where each tried to outdo the other in how tough they were until someone started shooting.
Either way, you have to wonder about the authorities in Newark. What a bunch of clueless goats.

Or maybe it’s required when the lone survivor is the lone WITNESS in a gang banger mass murder and the police are worried that MS13 might try to end that witnesses life right there in the hospital. Nice place that Newark must be.

This report suggests that Jovel wasn’t simply caught with a passport, but was found with a US passport. If he’s not a US citizen, that means that he’s in possession of a fraudulent passport. Officials are still trying to determine whether the passport is legit.
All I ask is once they convict these thugs they fry them … no jail … no long appeals … nothing … no jail and get out … not on the table …

Why are we putting up with this cr*p being shoved down our throats by our elected representatives? I do not know about you reader; but I for one feel betrayed. Betrayed by a city councilman who will not pledge allegiance to the flag of his country. Betrayed by a drunken senator who killed a young woman and left the scene of the accident. Betrayed by a Senator who pledged immigration reform, then voted for a bill he had not even read. Betrayed by a military collogue who rants and raves about our young soldiers to promote himself. Betrayed by the news media which reports only the slant they want, and then in appeasement of people who are killing Americans.
I disagree. We should defend everyone the same way. Then we insure the rights of all US citizens, because we all know the absolute incompetence of DHS and it’s agencies.
Upon completion of the trial, imprisonment, and deportation, the bill should be applied against the country of origin by placing a lien on their Embassy or place of residence for UN officials. Payment due in full!
As far as MS-13, we moved out of an area here in Northern VA because of their increased presence. A friend of ours who still lives in that same area just put his house up in this crappy market because the problem has gotten worse. He’s not going to have a problem selling, though. The slum lords are already knocking, and trying to figure out how to add more rooms in his townhouse.

Citizens deserve a defense, not illegals.
I watched Booker last night on Bill O’Reilly the guy is completely out of touch. These people wouldn’t report anyone whether he wants to protect them from the authorities or not. A perfect example is all those children that died in the fire in NYC (a sanctuary city)they lived in a ramshackle building because they had too and the illegal women would call the FDNY because she was afraid they would all be deported. Which makes Bookers statement UNTRUE they will report crimes if they feel they won’t be reported to ICE.
What these pathetic politicians don’t realize hiding illegal aliens isn’t beneficial to the illegals alien or the US citizens. They live in squalor they take menial and dangerous jobs because they have too! Our politicians have created a double edge sword which leave the illegals and citizens in danger. The illegals are our new slaves and that was abolished a long time ago.
#12 I don’t know what cracker Jacks box this judge received his law license but, his interpretaion of the is INCORRECT what he did is he separated unlawful entry being illegal and once you you stay then your no longer illegally here. Entering and staying in the country illegally either by crossing or by overstaying your visa is a misdemeanor and illegal. This judge is a moron.
The judicial system is suppose to be the least powerful per the constitution and judges like are interpretating the laws of there opinins and not the law sa it was written.
Fox is reporting that there is some likelihood that this is related to MS-13 gang… even though Newark authorities are denying it.
It seems that denial is typical of local authorities, for whatever reason.
In Geneva, NY there have been two recent shootings - - one hispanic youth dead - shot by an African American - - then days later an African American youth shot in revenge. It sounds like gang activity to most people, but the ‘officials’ continue to deny it. Geneva has a population of under 20,000 so this is a very significant event to everyone.
I understand that gang activity, in particular MS 13 gang activity is effecting small communities in upstate New York on a more regular basis. Illegal immigration allows these sociopaths to spread their poison across this country terrorizing American citizens…in small cities and large. Our politicans need to step up and take action. That’s their job.
