I’m glad he’s leaving that position. It was extremely frustrating having to hear him ‘tow the line’( granted, that was his job) especially in settings where one was trying to have a legitimate conversation with him. Think of Glenn Beck and the illegal alien amnesty. Tony would sit there and tell us “It’s not amnesty. Till he turned blue. When, to pretty much anyone with any sense, it clearly was. I mean it was like telling him that the sky was blue and he would argue that it was in fact green.
Anyway, I hope he gets better and eventually comes back in a position where he doesn’t have to behave like some idiotic robot.

Just following orders and defending the POTUS’ position are two different things. The SS were in charge of the death camps and Hitler’s Final Solution, which was genocide in the most vicious manner. Purge for the Reich. To make that comparison is a stretch by any means and has no basis
in reality. What dots do you connect to arrive at such an analogy? Tony Snow
and other press secretaries have done
a decent job.

I wonder how many times Clinton’s people have had to just bite the bullet and stand up for him?

Even Hillary had to stand by him…oops.
She’s a Senator now, trying to run for president on a moderate podium.

Tony Snow isn’t resigning because he hates the job; he is resigning because he is sick and needs the time off. Kudos to Bush for being classy enough to accept his resignation.

Really, Well then maybe we should revist and critique the last Democratic Presidency, that would be Slick Willy’s Administration, how did his Press Secretary have to deal with the Monica Lewinsky debacle everyday…should we all google it!!! What was some of those other things Bill Clinton’s Press Secretary had to contend with? I have not forgotten the Clinton Years and the none stop coverage and his Press Secretary, being put in really bad situations.

What lost credability? His job was to articulate the position of the PotUS. Not tell us what he thinks. When yuo are Press Secretary, your thoughts and opinions get set aside. You act as – for lack of a better term – a Defense Lawyer. You might think it’s the dumbest postion possible, but if the Prez says do it, you defend the stance to the best of your ability.

I understand that, but I can’t square this with reality. Besides, didn’t the “we were just following orders” excuse flop for the Nazis?

We were led to believe that Tony would be able to articulate the concerns of the conservative citizenry to those living inside the Bush Bubble. Instead, he drank the Kool-Aid, toed the line and called his own integrity into question. How soon before the Kos Kidz shred something he says privately in the future with, “When you were press secretary to Chimpy McDumbass, you said X, now you say Y. Were you lying then or are you lying now?”

I couldn’t do it. If he was just a mouthpiece or pol sidekick (a la Matthews, Russert, Ingraham) who went pundit, that would be one thing, but he went from journalist and commentator to mouthpiece/water-carrier and now is coming back after having contradicted his private views by expressing the Administration’s positions du jour. He won’t retract his words from the gig now, so we’ll just have to wonder. Too bad.

So long Tony and thanks for doing an outstanding job. Regardless of what position he had to defend he did it with class. A job I would never want, having to deal with the moronic bottom feeders that call themselves the Washington Press Corps or defend some of the bonehead decisions coming out of the White House. I will miss his whit and the way he put many of the idiots in their place.

Good luck Mr. Snow and may you continue to defeat your illness.

DirkBelig, Tony was smart enough and, as you said, classy enough to reconcile his views and those he had to represent. Also he won’t lose any credibility, people understand the difference betwenn White House Spokesman and private citizen.

I do like Tony Snow, when I see him on TV, I can see the toll his cancer treatment is taking on him. My prayers to Tony Snow, stay positive!! I only have good thoughts for you.

I don’t know who could take his place, he has done such a great job.

Will Tony Snow ever be able to regain the credibility he squandered mouthing the Team Dubya party line? I call the GOP the Stupid Party because of an old column of his and to see him attacking conservatives, his former brethren, at the behest of his West Wing masters was depressing to witness.

Here’s to hoping he beats cancer and gets back to pressing the GOP to stop drifting left. Unfortunately, I suspect he is too classy and loyal to bite the hand that fed him.
