Living in Bizarro World: Spit-covered double standards

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 6, 2007 12:01 PM

You’ve probably noticed the new “Notable Quotable” feature on my blog. I think it’s important not to let Geraldo Rivera’s hate speech disappear down the rabbit hole. I am not surprised that he’s gotten away with it. I am not surprised by the almost universal refusal in the MSM to condemn his disgusting threat. Nor will I be surprised when we get cowardly explanations that he didn’t really mean it. Apologists will play the Wonkette card. It was just a joke. Blah, blah, blah.

Nor am I surprised by the drooling pile-on by the Left. If you tolerate a bully, you beget more bullying. Last night, it was MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann frothing at the mouth–citing Geraldo approvingly as he handed out a “Worst Person in the World” award to…me. Really:

Now, can you imagine the uproar if any other female journalist/commentator had been on the receiving end of Geraldo’s rhetorical spittle? This wasn’t an off-the-record comment at a cocktail party or a private remark in a green room. It was on-the-record smear to a Boston Globe reporter.

And the message over the past week has been: This smear/attack/threat is acceptable.

Another little anecdote that reveals what a Bizarro World we live in: To ensure that Geraldo’s spit slam didn’t go quietly into the night, I bought a few ads through Google Adsense and Quigo. I believe in holding people accountable for their words. If you Google “Geraldo Rivera,” you may spot the ad in the sponsored links:

rivadgoog.jpg

The ad also appeared on the FoxNews.com website…

rivadfox.jpg

…until I received an e-mail this morning from ad company Quigo notifying me that the ad had been pulled and my account revoked:

Unfortunately, we had to disable your ad due to offensive content. If you have another ad copy that you would like to use, we would be more than happy to switch it out. Until that time, however, your account will be blocked.

Rich. Just rich.

DON’T let that ass get to you. One possible way to diffuse his vendetta and turn it against him is to ridicule him repeatedly, persistently and cleverly–make of him the joke that he is. That’s what was done to Rosie and it will work even better on a man with an ego the size of Geraldos. Go girl!!!!

As much as I like Ann Coulter’s views on a lot of subjects – I truly dislike her ‘manner of communication’ many times.

MM is much more capable of getting her point across without using some of the colorful conversation that Ann does.

I agree that MM should have more media support against this type of attack, both from GR & KO, but it should come from Fox News execs and hosts.

I love Mark Levin as well ( not in any Minneapolis Mens Room type of way, just agree with him a lot ), but he also can be a bit abrasive.

Better to take the high road, as Michelle always does.

FNC is lucky that KO is a short bus denizen. How embarrassing would it have been to have had KO condemn Mr. Rivera’s statement and FNC’s failure to address it?

It seems obvious that someone at foxnews.com marked the ad as offensive. I suspect that it was probably a low level employee doing his or her job to protect the brand, but it serves to reinforce further the belief that FNC management has no concern for its employee or values another employee to a greater degree. In the end, one must decide if career prospects and financial concerns outweigh workplace dissatisfaction forcing toleration of one’s treatment by management.

If you would like to bring this matter to a conclusion quickly, I would suggest getting an order of protection in NYC. Fox management would have to acknowledge your concerns and take some sort of action, though the results may not be that for which you had hoped.

That Geraldo Rivera is a self-absorbed boor who never was able to distinguish himself from the story he was supposedly covering? No surprise there.

And a pseudo-intellectual thug like Olbermann rushing in to dogpile on top of Rivera’s boorishness? That’s to be expected.

You’ve known all along, I suspect, that the Left reserves a special venom for two classes of people:

    1. Reformed leftists who dare speak the truth (e.g., David Horowitz); and

    2. Members of designated “victim” groups who refuse to be corralled onto the plantation of self-pity, resentment and dependence (e.g., You).

It may seem, in our steadily coarsening culture where losing the argument on the merits is viewed by more and more people as a green light to resort to ad hominem assaults, like an uphill battle for you.

Just remember that you have, and will always have, your supporters. You will never meet us. But we are here. We watch. We listen. We remember. We count on you to be strong in the face of the thugs – for your voice is heard by many, where ours is not.

All we ask for in return is that if your sense of conviction flags; if somehow your family and your friends don’t provide you with all the support you need to keep fightng the good fight — remember us.

Then, as Geraldo is defending himself, Michelle will ask “Did you also want to spit on all these people, too, who would have wished to be here, but they were all killed in a single week by illegal aliens?”

Then, they will show a yearbook-type picture of 25 people who died at the hands of an illegal. (According to Congressman Steve King, it is about 12 per week who are murdered and another 13 per week who are killed by illegal drunk drivers.) If you choose a week that is a couple months past, surely there will be enough info to determine who has been a victim of an illegal alien during a specific week, although you may need blogger input.

Better yet, bring full size cut-outs of each victim – what a visual – you and 25 victims (who, we remind Geraldo, will never hug, laugh, or breath again) standing there waiting for Geraldo to spit on all of them. Show everyone what a fool he is.

Besides, with the motion sickness girl, or whatever the hell she is, the internet police babe, Sunny Hostin and Megan Kelly, Kirsten, Michelle, et al, it’s beginning to look like Atlantic City the night before the Miss America pagent. My wife is starting to percieve the show as appearing superficially sexist – and I can’t disagree with the perception. They need Candy Crowly in there for a little culture shock if she’s still around…. I had the opportunity to meet her once, by the way, and we had a nice little chat, and Fox should pick her up because she was very nice and seemed, um, like she might not be adverse to looking around)

Since she’s already on board and considering the situation with Geraldo, real justice, of course, would be “Thursdays with Michelle Malkin”, but we live in an imperfect world, alas.

If Geraldo isn’t on The Factor tomorrow, I think he got the boot. If so, that’s great and shows his kind of hate won’t be tolerated. I wonder if Geraldo’s show on the weekend will disappear too, if not now, in the near future. I can’t imagine FOX allowing that kind of behavior.

Michelle, no offense meant, because you can stand on your own merit, but a man that uses a quote from another man (especially one lacking credibility like “here’s their coordinates” Geraldo) to demean a woman clearly lacks the cojones to stand on his own.

I speak for nobody else but myself when I say that Olbermann’s words are those of a guy that won’t last long in the “playground” of free-thinking ideas.

Zero pathos Olbermann! Knuckle up and speak the truth if you believe it’s on your side (which it clearly isn’t if you have to rely on Geraldo). Grow up.

Oh, there’s no question that the women who opposed O’Rielly’s views make their feelings known, and that’s one of the great things about Fox. yes, the main commentators like Bill and Brit Hume absolutely lean somewhat right, but unlike CNN, MSNBC and the networks, they put on very LOUD dissenting voices. It’s the inherent advantage conservatives have over liberals: our side can put the two side-by-side with confidence because we’ll do anything from simply win on the merits to watch the liberal make a fool of him/her self as only someone from the moons of Jupiter can do. The poor liberals are stuck – they have no recourse but to silence our voices, even when it comes not just to answers, but questions as well, as is evidenced by the Democrat candidates cowardice to debate on Fox.

As for the superficial apperance of sexism, I understand it. Yes, pretty people are desireable on television. As someone in the biz I know that’s rule one. But Bill’s show is getting flooded with young, attractive-to-beautiful women, and the fact is that you have to mix it up a bit to have a credible cast: a few more like Linda Chavez – attractive but moving into middle age – maybe someone with less looks but huge huge, charisma (Michelle has it when she appears relaxed). Part is beauty, but also age. Although ethnicity helps. there’s Michelle, and putting Harris Falkner on prime time for the news blurbs was casting genius, because she’s a perfect break from the majority of the Fox contributors.

But this “young, beautiful girl thing on the Factor, while pretty is appreciated (to illustrate that I have no problems with it, I’ll say that my wife is gorgeous – never a time goes by when someone new in our lives doesn’t whisper to me that she’s beautiful) but sameness on television gets stale – even when it’s beautiful sameness. And now Geraldo, despicable guy that he is, is gone, and in comes another blonde beauty.

I get sick of hearing about diversity in society, but in casting for television it’s an absolute necessity. O’Reilly has a formula, but it needs to feel relaxed, and this gorgeous young girl thing feels forced, and that’s just dull.

Mr. Conservative Cat – Exactly…conservatives encourage debate, liberals loathe it. They only want to hear voices that agree with them. FOX will continue to do well as long as they do as they are now.

FOX News has always had comments made about them regarding the good looking women they hire. Like it or not, it seems to be the way of most of television. Even our local tv is the same. I haven’t gotten to the point where it annoys me because of the great variety of guests that appear on the FOX News shows. When it gets to the point where beauty outweighs substance on FOX, then it will be different. Right now, all those ladies are highly intelligent and hold their own.

Does this guy have a fetish or what? It would be funny to think so, but the way he slightly paused on the word spit suggests to me that this whole thing is very much on his mind. However, I think you’re being principled here, and so yeah, I’ll do it too, and let them know. We might only be a couple of whisps of air whistling dimly in a hurricane, but better not be heard as that than have our tiny rating numbers be heard as unintentionally supporting a windbag like Geraldo Rivera.

Sure, I’ll do it. Turning off the TV for five minutes will be fun – I can catch up on my reading. ;-)

Michelle, since you are both contributers to Fox News, it would be interesting to see what they have to say about this. Such as do they condemn his remarks, and if not, why not? And why does Rivera still have a job at Fox? Hang tough; he is light years away from you in both class and profesionalism, but I believe these are the kind of things you can’t just shrug off and let go.

I have no problem with G-man having his present job at Fox. You see, our side isn’t afraid of letting you hear all sides of the story; the left, the supposedly open side, is the side which wants to censor opinions they disagree with.

    Jimbo,

    If I may respectfully disagree:

    1. Geraldo doesn’t put his political bias on the line the way O’Reilly and others do.

But much more to the issue:

    2. Geraldo is entitled to his opinion. But saying he would spit on another co-worker because he so strongly disagrees with her opinion is not – hopefully – common practice at Fox and so it should not be treated as such. No offense, but I think you may have missed the point on all this.

Shrugging this off would be a mistake, IMO, because an unchallenged lie too quickly becomes the truth, as is evidenced of how quickly Obermonster jumped opportunistically on the story.

I think Michelle is in serious trouble of being cast as a villian the way so many other conservative commentators have. It seemed that the left didn’t have a handle on how to bring down an attractive ethnic woman, but Gerldo – former Gerry Rivers the quasi-caucasian, by touting his newly embraced Hispanic ethnicity, has opened the door, even though Michelle has never been hateful IMO and his remarks about spitting on her more vile than anything I have heard Michelle say or write.

No, this time we can’t stand back. MM is a powerful voice, and we can’t let her reputation go the mainstream way of Rush, Newt and every other intelligent, effective conservative voice horribly unfairly vilified by the left-wing media killing machine.

No, this time we have Geraldo’s spitting comment on which to hang Mr. River’s reputation and that of anyone who supports his views on Michelle. And we need to keep the pressure up. Two words of warning: remember Bob Dole. In other words, no more Mr. Nice Guy. That’s just how it’s got to be.

Now get out there and start objecting!!!!

I’m a premium member for Bill O’Reilly and there are lots of MM fans (including myself) over there protesting Bill’s lack of confrontation of Geraldo about the spitting. We will have to keep the heat up on this issue.

I think we should start an email campaign to Bill O asking him to take Geraldo to task for his outrageous behavior. To start things off, here’s what I sent Mr. O’Reilly:

    Bill,

I’m disappointed that you haven’t taken Geraldo to task for threatening to spit on Michelle Malkin. You often take members of the media to task for outrageous behavior. Why haven’t you addressed Geraldo’s outrageous behavior?

By the way, in case you hadn’t seen the quote, here it is:

“Michelle Malkin is the most vile, hateful commentator I’ve ever met in my life,” he says. “She actually believes that neighbors should start snitching out neighbors, and we should be deporting people.

“It’s good she’s in D.C. and I’m in New York,” Rivera sneers. “I’d spit on her if I saw her.”

Here’s the link to the Boston Globe article that has the quote… it’s on page 2:

It’s great that people are e-mailing Mr. O about this. His silence is deafening, but not surprising since he appears to buddy up when Geraldo is on.

I hope Fox knows what they’re doing. People should remember conservatives are principled. Most have turned on Bush over his immigration stance (or lack of same). They’ll (we’ll) do it again to Fox over this, too. I hope Fox thinks Rivera is worth it.

As for Dhue, she’s on Rivera’s show, so I doubt she’ll bring it up. However, any letters to her might say something like “as a woman, how would you feel about Geraldo Rivera announcing to the world that he’d spit on you for, essemtially, simply disagreeing with him? Be honest.” That might put the pressure all around.
