Most likely, much of the General’s letter is inaccurate. Independent sources have been unable to confirm almost none of the claimed progress. Violence in Baghdad does not seem to have declined. The basis for the claim that “sectarian” violence is down is unknown. The Iraqi army is no more effective than it was last year and the national police force is a shambles.

I see it has immediately brought out lgm so I suspect we will shortly see his kool-aid drinking partners sausage and dark knight …

for the last 2 years I have heard the DemoCraps yelling about the Iraqi people standing up for themselves so now that the surge approach has resulted in convincing those in Anbar and Fallujah and a few other areas to do exactly that they have to say it has nothing to do with the surge …

This is no different than those living in gang infested neighborhoods in this country where the people are afraid to go to the police for fear of being attacked by the gangs …

Until the people see enough law enforcement presence to make them feel comfortable enoguh to come forward and report the gang members nothing will change.

That is exactly what has finally happened here … the people finally felt it was safe to turn on the terrorists and they have done just that …

Too bad all our kool-aid drinking libs can’t be objective enough to see that simple fact …

I’m afraid he could have written that both the military and governmental initiatives were succeeding beyond our wildest dreams but the Democrats would still find a way to turn a positive into a negative.

Ummmm, yeahhhhh, rabid and often unwarranted criticism of Bush and the military by Liberals has been the norm prior to now. All of a sudden, your Liberal buddies lack the “courage” to critique? Convenient.

Report: Blagojevich aide convicted in 1980s terror case
    Last Updated 9/7/2007 10:38:58 AM

CHICAGO — An official in Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s administration was convicted in 1983 and spent almost two years in federal prison for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating a militant Puerto Rican separatist group, according to a published report.

Steven Guerra, 53, is Blagojevich’s deputy chief of staff for community services. He was hired by the Illinois Department of Human Services in 2003.

Twenty years earlier, he was convicted of contempt of court in New York for not testifying in investigations of the Armed Forces of National Liberation, identified by the Spanish acronym FALN, according to a story published Friday in the Chicago Sun-Times.

The separatist group claimed responsibility for over 100 bombings in the U.S. that killed six and injured dozens from 1974 to 1983.

Guerra, who was not charged in any of the group’s attacks, was sentenced to three years in prison and released after serving 23 months in 1986, the newspaper reported.

Guerra has denied being a member of FALN.

But according to a sentencing memo obtained by the newspaper, Guerra was an insider to the group, knew of its workings and advocated violent tactics.

Guerra declined to comment to the Sun-Times. A message left by the Associated Press early Friday was not immediately returned.

According to the memo, based on accusations by admitted FALN member Alfredo Mendez, Guerra advocated “the violent overthrow of the United States government.”

The memo also claimed Guerra attended a gathering in Puerto Rico that was “a meeting of a cross section of terrorists.”

Blagojevich spokeswoman Abby Ottenhoff said Guerra “was never given the opportunity to review the pre-sentencing memo – it was not introduced in the trial – but he strongly denies the hearsay statements attributed to Mr. Mendez.”

She said Guerra disclosed the felony to the Blagojevich administration before he was hired and Blagojevich plans to stand by Guerra.

“If there was really evidence that he had been involved in criminal activity, undoubtedly the federal government would have aggressively pursued charges.” she said. “Instead, he was charged with refusing to testify before a grand jury. He served his sentence.”

I don’t care if it all has been carefully orchestrated, the fudged numbers do not bother me in the least.

This is war–on a par with WWII in its stakes, and if we’re going to win it, the president needs the authority and the flexibility to do prosecute as he sees fit.

Walter Lippman wisely wrote that in a democracy the “bewildered herd” needs to be channeled by more rational, dispassionate and disinterested leaders. That is the role that the administration is fulfilling right now. As long as these morons in congress can learn to control themselves, we’ll have it won.

    All,

We have an all volunteer military, other countrys have mandatory military service, right off the top of my head Spain and Israel. Imagine countrys, that insist on Service to your Homeland.

If we had mandatory service maybe all the people who critize the Military, would at least have had the experience to know what they are critizing. Imagine instead of 2nd hand and 3rd hand critism, they could have 1st hand knowledge to back up all their anti Military claims. Until then if you are not in or not have not worn a pair of combat boots. I am going to send your anti American Military critisms to the round file.

I feel pretty sure the President would prefer that as well … but the Dems pushed through this whole bill with the caveat that although Petraeus reports to Congress the final written (and therefore official) report comes from the President

I don’t know if whatever agreement does/would exclude an address by the General to Congress,DL.

Of course, there are ulterior motives in the idea. First, to stress the deep, historic importance in fighting and winning this war/ Second, it would also be an address “over the heads” of Congress to the American people.

Also, Petraeus may not have a MacArthur or Geo C. Scott-like Patton delivery but it’s good in general (accidental pun) to get a “military face” front and center in wartime.

As a side note, didja know the Constitution doesn’t require the President to give a yearly “State Of The Union” address? It says the President is to give such an address “from time to time”, without specificity. The President can give as few or as many during his term, as he chooses. I think it would be great to rattle their cages unexpectedly every now and then. Kinda “get the whole gang together next week, I’m gonna talk to ya”. :)

If you guys had a case, you probably would make it. Instead you just make fun of me, which gets zero points in a scored debate. Post some links to data (number of attacks, Iraqi deaths, US soldier deaths, electricity production, Iraqi political reconciliation, etc.) The only link posted had only a bunch of cheer leading, not any actual data.

Even Anbar province seems still to be very violent (too violent for reporters to wander around).

Anbar province? Wasn’t that the province that the President of the United States recently visited?

As for cheerleading, I assume you mean the Iraq’s Inconvenient Truth site? How is that cheerleading? How is that not showing facts?

You are laughable because your points are laughable. You ask for proof, yet when you get proof written by people on the ground it is not good enough because it doesn’t back your particular point of view. If you want us to take you seriously, come back with some hard facts, or at least stuff written by people on the ground before spewing misinformed nonsense. You ask for hard numbers on things like number of attacks, iraqi deaths, infrastructure progress, political progress etc, yet you are unwilling to read the link provided which describes those details. Not in a nice table format, but the data is there.

Seriously, you just don’t like it and call it cheerleading because it doesn’t support your point of view.

As I have said before here. To the “America is the problem for everything in the world crowd” facts do not matter, because that is the premise that they start with. After all according to a scientific poll 25% of Liberals believe the President had something to do with the 9/11 attack. 25%!!!!!
