Photoblogging Gathering of Eagles 3: Us and Them…plus bonus Rolling Thunder vs. Code Pink video…and more photos added

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 15, 2007 10:18 PM

Update: Check out our video highlights of Them.

Update: Gee, which side do you think the protester charged with felony possession of an incendiary device was on…Us or Them? Via ABC News (hat tip - bpmonaco): “Thousands of anti-war protesters holding black and yellow signs saying “End the War” filled the park in front of the White House today demanding an end to U.S. occupation of Iraq. Police said they arrested 189 people, one of them on a felony charge of carrying an incendiary device.”

I can’t tell you how proud and honored I was to meet so many Eagles out on the streets of D.C. today. We’re just beginning to wade through our photos and video, but the difference could not be starker between the Eagles and the ANSWER mob. Here’s a quick compare-and-contrast between us and them (I snapped all the “Us” photos unless otherwise noted; see photo credits for “Them” links).

Bonus video. Last night at our hotel, we heard from members of Rolling Thunder who had gone to the DC Code Pink house. Code Pink posted video of some of the encounter. Another stark Us vs. Them moment:

***

From the, yes, NYTimes:

The antiwar demonstration was held on the same day as a separate event sponsored by a group called Gathering of Eagles, a veterans group.

Before the antiwar marchers arrived, there was a brief physical altercation between some members of the antiwar group Code Pink and some of the demonstrators who said they were there to support the troops. The police moved in to break up the scuffle. As the antiwar demonstrators moved along Pennsylvania Avenue, the two sides continued to trade chants and sometimes heated messages, but lines of police officers intervened to keep the opposing sides apart.

“What troubles me, the thing that is so dismaying, is they don’t realize the big picture,” said John Aldins, 54, who came from Media, Pa., with his wife, Karen, and daughter, Rachel, to show their support for the troops. The Aldins have three other children serving in the military. Rachel Aldins will join the Army in the fall to serve as a nurse.

“It’s not just Iraq, it’s the whole Middle East,” Mr. Aldins said. “It’s not a red, blue or pink issue. It’s an all-of-us issue.”

***

The Hill reports about 200 ANSWER-istas arrested. (Also note how ANSWER’s crowd estimate is featured high up in the article. We were right in the middle of the crowd at the Capitol and walked the length of the moonbat convergence. There were certainly more of them compared to the March protest, but there’s no way there were 100,000. Knock off a zero and you’re getting closer to reality.)

That’s quite a bigger challenge than regime change. It sounds like it would take at least 100 years, and make WWII and the Marshall plan seem miniscule by comparison.

The democratic nominee will probably position himself (and by himself I mean herself) to getting out of Iraq in an orderly fashion and preventing a regional conflict. At least that seems a plausible sales pitch in an effort to get to 270 electoral votes.

It is less clear who the Republican nominee will be but if he takes a position that the United States is going to remake the Middle East, I think they are looking at a second place finish.

Maybe the pull-quote from the Times was purposely selected to make the Eagles seem like they were supportive of involvement in several more Middle East countries.

Cat, I agree with you on the photo descriptions.

I think you may be misreading the quote. I believe Mr. Aldins is simply pointing out that we are not just at war in Iraq. We are at war with jihadists everywhere. Only some of Us seem to get that. A hell of a lot of Them don’t.

I know the troops appreciate your actions because I still am privileged to work next to this generation of American heroes.

Thank you Michelle for the time you and your staff put in. Your reports are a great morale booster and it is good to see these events from both side of the argument. I think you’re right, drillanwr, but I believe the more correct term wouldn’t be anti-war , but rather anti-America.

To be more precise, since their party does not disavow them, “anti-America Democrats”.

Since they are all for Israel to wiped off the face of the earth they can hardly be called “anti-war”. They want thier wars as long as the wars help to bring down America.

To everyone who attended, nice job. You have to remember that the Commies/red diaper doper babies/misfits who show up at these things belong to a well-funded, organized, professional protester class. This is what they do. Many of them don’t have jobs and if they do, they’re “flexible” jobs that allow them to pursue this lifestyle. They know how to play the media and it doesn’t hurt that many journalists to some degree sympathize with them. They take advantage of the fact the rest of us have jobs, responsibilities, different financial situations, etc. that don’t permit the “Silent Majority” to take to the streets all of the time. We don’t have a George Soros sugar daddy to pay for these things. We certainly don’t have the romance of ’60s rebellion that the media seems to love. I remember when I lived in the D.C. area the warm, fuzzy stories in the Post and on the local news about the “anti-globalization” protesters, which is what the anti-war protesters were before Iraq.

But you gotta do what you gotta do. Keep it up!

DC has a high crime rate but there are many different police agencies responsible for specific areas. For instance, protests on federal property are handled by federal agencies like the U.S. Park Police, the US Capitol Police, Secret Service, etc.

The MPD handles everything in DC proper which would include public streets. Usually, protest operations are worked under a joint command structure involving all of the affected agencies. Resources are coordinated and personnel assignments are made based on availability for each jurisdiction.

I am confident that all routine MPD sectors were fully staffed. Depending on the anticipated size of the protest, they have in the past cancelled leave and required off duty officers to work. They also have mutual aid agreements with surrounding jurisdictions for special operations such as aviation or marine assets.

They’re pretty good at planning and working these things.

Wow, a totally unresponsive anecdote (possibly formulated by the voices in your head)! Who would have thunk it. Well, here’s one from me: I know one more individual serving in the military than you, and they are all -gasp- not Republicans!

But back to the point you conveniently ignored: I wonder why those young, healthy College Republicans aren’t serving in Iraq. What on earth could be the answer for that? Bad knees? Other priorities? Repressed homosexuality?

    The world may never know!

We all saw a few thousand idiots yesterday who also looked healthy enough to join the military. You didn’t ask them to serve.

Oh wait, after reading your Huff Po article I now think I understand your position. Were you looking in the mirror when you talked about bad knees, or repressed homosexuality?

Oh ho. You’re one of those. I had a lady pull that question on me at the rally. I’m 24, young, healthy, able-bodied. My dad served in Vietnam, but I never signed up. I don’t plan to. I’ve been working the past 5 years educating and tutoring innercity children in Allentown and Philadelphia. I’ve spent the better part of my live working with mentally disabled adults. I’m proud of my work, and I shouldn’t have to defend it. I serve my country in the capacity that I have been called.

As a citizen, I have the CHOICE to serve in the military. Everyone who chooses that path is a hero in my eyes and the best among us. To listen to you and others like you try to shut people up through some guilt trip is ridiculous.

I support our troops and our mission. I showed up in DC to stand with them, shoulder to shoulder. They always stand a bit taller. I don’t have to be in Iraq to know what is at stake. I would be a poor citizen if I hadn’t marched against the anti-American and anti-troop vitriol spewed by thousands at yesterday’s rally. With flags upside down and Petraeus being called a chicken “sh*t”… you are sneering at the wrong crowd buddy.

To simply throw it all back to you, what have you done to back up your ideals? I bet you want action in Darfur. Have you been there? Have you served those people physically? If not, do you think you have a right as a citizen to voice your opinion on our policy? Do you have a right to call for action?! Think about it.

Besides, how long did you spend in jail yesterday after being arrested at the rally? Did you even go to the anti-war demonstration? Put you money where your mouth is and fight for peace if that is what you want - rather than sitting hunched over a computer keyboard in your mama’s basement.

It’s easy to sit back and let others try to end the war while you sneer at your betters for their supposed lack of commitment. What about your commitment? What are you willing do to for peace?

Before you can cast a stone in this debate, come back and tell me you’ve spent a night in jail or caught a whiff of tear gas.

    Otherwise, shut the f**k up.

You must be like 15 yrs old. Those of us who came through the Vietnam era learned the hard way - ignore these clods to your own destruction. Just because they then go QUIETLY about their own business DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE HARMLESS.

You will find the hard measures being taken in Iraq and Afghanistan are a bargain compared to the price we’ll pay here.

TrinityTim,thank you for your kind words. I was sitting in MC’s room and looking at the red bag that said “hazzardous materials” on it. I noticed that he never came back with his sources. I hope Rick is correct and that he’s off. Additionally, thank you for being part of the Patriot Riders and for having the most difficult job (being a cop because 99% of the time people aren’t happy to see you in their rear view mirror). The day we returned to the mainland was 4/16 & a young man from the Augusta area was the second one killed in the VT rampage. The Roper family was supposed to be in the area for the funeral but the Patriot Riders came and they didn’t show. We weren’t really sure why the Ropers were going to come but I know the family mentioned many times how greatful they were that the Patriot Riders came.
Matt, I agree 1000% as does my hubby. He was talking to his Grandmother last evening and he said that while he was glad to be with his family, his job was in Iraq and he was anxious to get back. Stay safe over there!

Probably because the set of college Republicans is greater than the number of volunteers the military needs. So you’re demanding a physical impossibility. So that’s one way your argument is fallacious. Let’s explore some other ways.

Let’s say we accept your argument that all college Republicans are hypocrites. Does the character of the source affect the truth of the message? Arguing it does, as you seem to, is the argumentum ad hominem, another logical fallacy. It’s something like saying honesty is the best policy when recommended by a preacher but not when recommended by a criminal. You’re confusing the message with the messenger.

Now lets apply your demagoguery to your own life. If you oppose crime, how come you’re not a policeman? If you are against cancer, why aren’t you a doctor? If you are for education, why aren’t you a teacher?

If you would like me to beat you over the head with your own fallacious logic please come back. I can do this all day.
