Lame, lame duck: Bush’s decision not to nominate Ted Olson for AG

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 18, 2007 10:02 AM

My expectations of the Bush administration are so low now, it’s hard to get worked up anymore when the White House abandons conservatives in its futile quest to appease Democrats. But I am moved to agree with Paul Mirengoff of Powerline that the decision to pass up Ted Olson for Attorney General in favor of Schumer-approved nominee Michael Mukasey was an especially dispiriting “act of preemptive surrender.”

Paul notes that even the Washington Post editorial board had more fight than President Bush:

Mr. Olson’s possible nomination drew howls from Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), who proclaimed last week that he would do “everything I can to prevent” Mr. Olson’s confirmation. The desire to avoid a fight over the next attorney general may, in fact, be the right thing for an already beleaguered Justice Department. But no president should be cowed by the kind of threats lobbed by Mr. Reid. Mr. Olson is undoubtedly partisan. It’s no coincidence that he represented Mr. Bush before the Supreme Court in Bush v. Gore. But if he had settled on Mr. Olson, Mr. Bush would have been nominating one of the premier lawyers of his day. Mr. Olson served honorably during the Reagan administration as head of the influential Office of Legal Counsel. His years as solicitor general under Mr. Bush proved he could serve ably and without political rancor even while adhering to a conservative view of the law. Mr. Olson would have restored to the top job at the Justice Department a level of intellectual heft and gravitas that had been absent during Mr. Gonzales’s 2 1/2 -year reign of errors.

Without a doubt, Mr. Reid and the Democrats have an obligation to pry deeply into the qualifications and character of the person nominated to the top law enforcement job in the country. What they don’t have is the right to usurp the president’s role in choosing a nominee who shares his — or possibly even her — ideology and priorities.

Our lame duck president, apparently, doesn’t agree.

    Hmmm, let’s see:
President Bush meets with Milbloggers, and you have nothing good to say about our President then.

He goes to Iraq to meet with the troops for the THIRD time, more than any other president in a time of war…and you have nothing good to say about him then either.

Is he perfect? No. No president…I mean NO PRESIDENT is going to do everything you want and please you all the time, MM. Sorry, but that’s the way it goes.

Don’t be in such a hurry to see this man leave office because with him goes any sense of morality, respect, and decency for the office. No other pesident will love our military as much as this one does and, as the wife of a former Marine, I truly appreciate that the most.

He has shown us what a good marriage in politics looks like, he has shown us that even the rich can live well within their means and not flaunt it. He has shown us that he ignores the polls unlike former presidents.

Just think what we’ll have in the White House in 2 years.

Maybe you should try praying for the man?? I pray for him every morning:

“Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and GIVING THANKS be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and reverence…”

A “quiet and peaceful life…” That’s why I pray for the man. (Actually, I pray Psalm 35 over him all the time…)

….Anyways, we need to learn to appreciate what we have and say “thank you” once in awhile, otherwise the good that we have could be taken away.

Or rather given away as seems to be happening lately in so many areas with this administration. While we all pray for President Bush, could we also pray that he’ll maybe exercise a veto once in a while (as they say, “If you don’t use it you’ll lose it”, and Bush seems to have lost his veto pen lo these 6 years now)? Perhaps we could pray that he’ll have a “road to Damascus” conversion and become a “born again” conservative instead of being wishy-washy on just about everything except the Iraq war and our troops (and I daily give thanks for that)? And I daily pray that he, and the Congress, will actually do something real about the illegal invasion problem.

Lastly I pray that we will elect in 2008 someone who not only has conservative principles but will stand up and act on them vigorously without fear of censure by liberals.

    artbyruth,

I’ve had the pleasure of first hand experiences that demonstrate our president’s appreciation for the military over a span of almost four years. But he’s not the first or last guy out there who loves and appreciates the military. President Reagan did, his father did, and the majority of Republican candidates demonstrate a similar love for the guys and gals in green.

What Michelle is taking him to task for is for backing down in the face of adversity. She’s right. This nomination is not this president’s finest hour. Not by a long shot.

President Bush has been a bit of a disappointment. He started off trying to placate the left (an exercise in futility)…he didn’t fire enough of the Clinton political appointees, and they continually came back to bite him in the butt! He tried to hold hands with the likes of Kennedy, and it got him no where! He jumped on the dems illegal alien bandwagon, pissing off almost his entire base. When you sit on the fence and try to make the dems happy, you’re going to fail. The only redeeming factor to his presidency, is the consistent execution of the war on terror. Were it not for that, I fear his presidency would have been a complete disaster for true conservatives. The only consolation I have is that at least Kerry wasn’t in the oval office.

Dittos Michelle! Conservatives would stick with him on a principle-based struggle, but he refuses to take a stand against the Democrat traitors. His repeated cave-ins to the radical left serve only to demoralize the base. Simply put, Republicans will *never* win as long as they act like Democrats!

The nasty fact of life in our dastardly world of anti-American media and like-minded liberal Democrats, is that it takes a lot of time and maintenance to put up a nominee and defend the unjust onslaught that results. The President has many fish to fry and the execution of the war and dealing with the terror threats takes a lot of his time and energy. The dirty lot of galvanized Benedict Arnolds: Reid, Schumer, Biden, Kerry, Kennedy, Leahy, Clinton, Durbin, Hagel, & on and on, will rue the day they chose personal power and selfish motives over the welfare of the USA and its citizens. They have crossed too many lines and the people of this country have their backs against the wall. When the constitution is being shredded and the voters raped by these charlatans it is time to check the peoples options as found in the various amendments to the constitution.

Only 18 more months. I like George for the most part but you are right Michelle, the administration is sinking to new lows. What GW should be doing is fighting for principle against the non-principaled Dems. Let’s have a fight. Duke it out. We would all be better for it.

How about noticing that Mukasey is a partisan conservative, one with Schumer’s endorsement for a life-time appointment to the Supreme Court. So, how ridiculous will Schumer and company look if they object to Mukasey’s nomination for AG?

I think you’ve misunderestimated our President. He’s sacrificed nothing and left Olsen for the Giuliani administration. (I would have said “Thompson administration” until I saw the video where Fred looks like a retired factory worker with health problems.)

I have either heard or hallucinated that Mr. Olson is being kept back for a future/hopeful slot at the Supreme Court when/if there is a vacancy.

I read that if he should have gotten the AG position that he could have been tainted from this administration for a future SCOTUS position. Makes sense to me…

OR, that he is being considered for future jobs with a hopeful future GOP President ‘08. Regardless, he is a great man who would do well in any position and I hope he can be recognized soon and scare the Depends off of the Dems.

Ok, y’all: it is ok to not like Bush anymore, as I am not crazy about his immigration position AT ALL. But it is NOT ok to desert the GOP. Soon, very soon, we need to unite behind a candidate. Thanks.
