Shamnesty Watch: Keep the heat on the DREAM Act…Only 18 Senators have committed to voting no; Update: 20 Senate no votes?

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 18, 2007 08:29 PM

Update 3:45pm Eastern 9/19. I’ve heard conflicting reports from readers who contacted Sen. John Cornyn’s office about the DREAM shamnesty. Haven’t heard back directly from his staff myself, but my friend Ragnar at the Jawa Report says he was told Cornyn is opposed to “all immigration-related amendments to the appropriations bill, including the DREAM act.”

Also hearing that Sen. Allard is a no.

Update 1:30pm Eastern 9/19. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is on the fence. Reader Jon sends her office’s response to whether she supports or opposes the DREAM Act:

Thank you for contacting me regarding in-state tuition for long-term resident immigrants. I welcome your thoughts and comments on this issue.

On March 1, 2007, Congressman Howard Berman (D-CA) introduced H.R. 1275, the American Dream Act. This legislation would allow states to offer in-state tuition rates to long-term resident immigrant students. Specifically, it seeks to repeal a provision in the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 which requires states providing in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants to offer the same benefits to out-of-state residents.

A similar measure, S. 774, the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2007, was introduced by Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) on March 6, 2007, and has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, on which I do not serve. This measure would also allow certain long-term residents who entered the U.S. as children to have their immigration or residency status adjusted to conditional permanent residents or permanent residents. Should H.R. 1275 or S. 774 come before the full Senate, you may be certain I will keep your views in mind.

On June 17, 2001, Texas began allowing nonresident students who have graduated from a Texas high school and resided in the state for at least three years to qualify for in-state tuition. These students are also eligible for state financial aid programs such as the Texas Public Educational Grant Program and the Students Incentive Grant Program.

I appreciate hearing from you and hope you will not hesitate to keep in touch on any issue of concern to you.

Sincerely,
Kay Bailey Hutchison

Update 10:30am Eastern 9/19. Meanwhile, more bloody consequences of open-borders: Illegal alien gangster/drug addict/previous deportee kills police officer, takes hostage; Illegal Immigrant Pleads Guilty To Killing Marine, Date.

Update 9:00am Eastern 9/19: Former INS senior special agent Michael Cutler sounds the alarm on stealth amnesty and writes: “Democracy is not a spectator sport! Lead, follow or get out of the way!”

Power to the People best-selling author Laura Ingraham’s message: “Okay, it’s time for another P2TP moment–elite Dems and Republicans are trying to backdoor amnesty in the Senate this week by pushing a provision through that would give illegal alien students in-state tuition benefits. TOTAL OUTRAGE! Call your senator today–now–do it. Tell them NO to the ‘Dream Act!’”

KFI’s John and Ken are leaning on California’s senators.

The Washtimes editorial board reports:

The Bush administration has not taken an official position, but Defense Department officials are quietly urging members to support the bill. Meanwhile, Homeland Security officials, alarmed by the prospect of massive fraud resulting from Mr. Durbin’s proposal, have been opposing it. This is a clear cut issue: The DREAM Act is a nightmare.

Tell your senator: Vote NO on Senate Amendment 2237

Yesterday morning, I gave out Senate phone numbers and reiterated my warning from last week about the coming scheme by open-borders politicians in both aisles to slip the DREAM Act into the Department of Defense authorization bill (H.R. 1585).

Numbers USA reports that only 18 Senators have committed to voting no. They are:

Alabama: Sessions; Shelby

Kansas: Roberts
Kentucky: Bunning; McConnell
Louisiana: Vitter
Mississippi: Lott
North Carolina: Burr; Dole
Oklahoma: Inhofe
South Carolina: DeMint; Graham
Tennesee: Alexander; Corker
Wyoming: Enzi

Fire up your phone lines. According to Numbers USA, “the senators noted below voted NO on the Comprehensive Amnesty in June, but have not yet pledged to vote NO on the DREAM Act amnesty. Phone them by contacting the Senate switchboard at 202-224-3121.”

Alaska: Murkowski, Stevens

I suggest we call the new nation “Kennebush” after the two turds who are most responsible for chamberpot immigration and illegal infiltration, that their names may live forever in infamy.

Calif has gone from being Reagan Red to deep blue specifically because of the past amnesties, imho. This is the long-term danger of these amnesties.

I know some people who are former illegals & current US citizens who refer to those here illegally as ‘their people’. They don’t consider me one of ‘their people’ even though we’re citizens of the same country & of the same ethnic background. They only regard their fellow illegals & amnesty supporters as being ‘their people’.

I suppose that’s possible, but Bush 41 is actually the one who started NAFTA. Clinton just completed the process. Although I said he was better than GWB, Clinton was actually terrible on immigration, too. Clinton got some amnesties passed, but they were smaller than GWB’s. He fought reinforcing the existing fence & building any new fencing. IIRC, he actually put a Mexican citizen on some immigration-related cmte. He tried to get a big union-backed amnesty, but failed. The one thing Clinton was genuinely better at than GWB was workplace enforcement, but I think that was probably to make the unions happy.

So, Clinton was definitely bad on this issue, he just wasn’t as stunningly bad as GWB.

Grassley’s said the same. But, I went to a townhall meeting with Grassley last year and he told me to my face that he supports the Dream Act. He said it is not the fault of the children that their parents brought them here and we owe them a college education. He would rather have them in school than on welfare. Then he told me “You know we can’t send them all home.” If you live in Iowa he cannot be depended on. Call and call again.

Harkin will vote with the wind. He is still worth calling. Last time he voted against amnesty when he saw the wind shift.

Thanks for reporting that about Grassley. Anyone who calls Grassley’s office should probably point out that this isn’t just for kids. ANYONE can claim that they came here before the age of 16 & have been here for at least 5 years, b/c no corroborating proof is required. There will be people in their 30’s & 40’s who will be getting this amnesty, guaranteed. Then, when they’re legal, they can sponsor anyone they want to be legalized, simply by claiming that that person is a relative. The govt won’t be doing DNA tests, so how would they discover that they aren’t related? This is no different than the KBK amnesty earlier this year, it’s just packaged differently.

Also, Harkin’s up for re-election next year. That should make it easier to convince him to vote against this.

I sent a letter to Warner, Webb, and Durbin. It essentially asked why they were considering this, when hard working Americans like myself are burdened with school debt.

I asked why precious college slots should be taken by individuals who have not followed the rules and qualified for visa or citizenship, while a number of qualified students will be passed up when those slots are filled.

I asked why they are looking to fix a non-existent problem, when there is a real and large problem of illegal alien identity theft, whose numbers are around 20 million across the US, and who are impacting the future of Social Security to the tune of over $500 BILLION.

I also took the time to reminder Mr. Durbin that it was his state that offered driver’s license for bribes, and that “my” illegal alien still roams the city of Chicago with an Illinois issued but illegally obtained Haz-Mat CDL.

I expect 2 out of 3 canned responses soon. Warner was I only chance, and he’s going soft since announcing retirement

What TXDOT tried to sneak through was unconscionable. Wanting to buy back from the fed the roads we already paid for to toll them. Many here feel that that was the last straw for TXDOT’s existence. They could be dismantled and replaced for their gross mismanagement.

The good thing about all this is that it is a HUGE setback for the development and construction of the Trans Texas Corridor. But of course, it ain’t over till it’s over. Lots of fighting ahead of us.

However, I’m worried about them when the Ag portion comes up next. KY farmers (including the horse farms) use loads of migrant workers — and I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of them don’t bother with the legalities of the visas. Alas, that greatly understates just how bad this legislation is. It would give immediate amnesty to several million illegals, who would then be eligible to sponsor ther illegal relatives already in the country.

Why are illegals attending school in this country? Because the Supreme Court prohibited states from prohibiting illegals from attending school.

I believe that both of our TN senators (Alexander and Corker) are in the NO column, but here’s why this whole thing infuriates me:
In 1996 (after a 30-year “empty-pockets” hiatus), I returned to school to complete my degree. It should’ve taken only one more year, but due to a “diversified” change in major to combine scholastic and experiential elements, it took two years. I received my degree from the University of Memphis in 1998 at the age of 56. Had I been afforded the same “rights” as these lawbreakers, I could have attended (with in-state tuition) the University of Missouri — which is my birth state. U of Missouri has a very highly rated School of Journalism (some say the highest in the country), and while I have nothing against U of Memphis, I would have preferred completing my education at Missouri. Out-of-state tuition prohibited that, as I couldn’t afford it

I also have nothing against properly documented aliens, but even so, why are they given more rights than I have?

And may I remind everyone: the Bill of Rights declares that our rights are “endowed by our Creator” — they are not “given” by government!

Note to Ill. voters (hope it’s not against MM’s rules to say this here):
Dick Durbin before he dicks you!

So – what is Kay Hutchinson saying?
