For some people, the thought of the Iranian President going to ground zero wasn’t just controversial, it was a personal insult. Roman Kent is a holocaust survivor. Jim Riches’ son, a firefighter, was killed on 9/11. “We feel what happened at 9/11or in the concentration camps all days of our life it does not leave me for a day,” Kent said. On Thursday, CBS 2 HD followed both men as they tried to get someone from the Iranian Mission to the United Nations to talk to them about President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit. At the building’s front desk, the men were told by an official, “I’ve given the info to the Iranian Mission and they’ll call you in a few moments.” Someone from the mission called back, saying she would try to set up an appointment.
“They told me they would call me back,” Riches said.

Update: 7:35pm Eastern 9/20. Columbia goes back and forth and back and forth on whether to cancel the Iranian nutjob’s appearance. Get me a Dramamine.
Update 5:20pm Eastern 9/20. The nutjob tells his friends at 60 Minutes that he is shocked, shocked at the uproar over his now-shelved Ground Zero visit.
Update 3:55pm Eastern 9/20. Audio – McCain speaks, says the Iranian nutjob should be “physically restrained” from visiting Ground Zero.
Update 3:20pm Eastern 9/20. Ken Timmerman sends word that his organization, Foundation for Democracy in Iran, is organizing with David Bossie of Citizens United, to counter-protest at Ground Zero. They are chartering buses from Washington, D.C.:

Update 2:45pm Eastern 9/20. Columbia U. urged to cancel Ahmadinejad speech.
Columbia University was urged on Thursday to withdraw a speaking invitation to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who will be in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn wrote to the university urging them to cancel Ahmadinejad’s planned speech
on Monday, which is part of Columbia’s World Leaders Forum. “Ahmadinejad is a Holocaust denier,” she wrote.
On Wednesday New York police said Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel to be wiped off the map, had been denied a request to visit the World Trade Center site of the September 11 attacks during his visit.
Quinn said universities should be a forum for a healthy exchange of differing ideas, but that there were limits.

Tim Sumner, 9/11 family member and blogger, e-mails that he has asked his congressman if he’ll join him in protesting Ahmadinejad: “I have a direct contact to my Congressman, Bill Shuster, and I just emailed him asking him that if Mahmoud Ahmadinejad comes to Ground Zero, that I’d like him to be there with me blocking the way. I think every Senator and Representative ought to be asked to state they will stand in his way as well.”

Despite the NYPD’s rejection, the Iranian nutjob still plans to visit Ground Zero. And he’ll have Secret Service protection! WABC reports:
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad requested to visit Ground Zero during an upcoming trip to New York. That request was rejected Wednesday. But a source tells Eyewitness News that the decision may not stop him.
A law enforcement source says the Iranian mission to the United Nations has informed the Secret Service that the Iranian president intends to visit Ground Zero Monday at 10 a.m.
The source says regardless of the NYPD’s rejection of the request for a Ground Zero tour, Iran’s president and his entourage will be accompanied by a Secret Service protective detail, a detail provided to all heads of state when they visit the United States.
Anyone in NYC know how to apply for a permit to organize a counter-protest to defend Ground Zero? Is it too late?

Do I not remember another MadMullah coming here a year or two ago and speaking at Columbia? Rasfanjhani, or something?

I have not heard of any stated purpose for his wanting to see ground zero. Is it to gloat? Have his picture taken in the pit smiling with a big thumbs up?
No good can come of this – none.
If things continue on the current path, Ahminthemoodforjihad will have plenty of smoking holes in the ground to visit in his own country.
I’ve never been arrested yet I will be if that terrorist tries to set one foot on Ground Zero. I will stand in his way at that sacred ground and they will have to arrest me if he comes there. That is where the very same terrorists thta he and his regime supported murdered a member of my family.

If I recall correctly, I believe the President has the authority to restrict Achmapukeijons travel. So, I wrote to him and asked him to do just that. I also wrote both of my senators and my representative.

Maybe we could overwhelm the White House and get some action if we all wrote to our representatives and senators.

We want the Iranians to back down from their nuclear ambitions; a confrontation too humiliating can further polarize. Protesting the guy’s idiotic statements is great, but staying away from things that create b-roll for Al Jazeera is a good idea too.

He’s coming here to address the UN. He’s not on a tourist visa, is he? The iranian mission informs that he *intends* to visit Ground Zero. They don’t appear to be asking permission. He’s not visiting the US, he’s visiting the UN. Why is he allowed the freedom to move about the city wherever he pleases? I’d like to see him handcuffed the moment he sets foot on US soil, uncuffed inside the UN building, and cuffed again upon his exit till he’s delivered back to his plane. And give him a good hard kick in the butt as he climbs aboard!
Both Syria and Iran have been helpful at times against the Taliban and al-Queda, so if we constantly put the interests of Israel above the interests of the United States and regard Israel’s enemies as implacable enemies of the U.S. also, then we are probably missing opportunities to destroy our enemy al-Queda. Putting Israel above the U.S. may make you a good Christian or neocon, but…

I’m no longer in the NYC area nor can I make it there on such short notice, nor have I ever protested anything, but on this one occasion I’d be there for sure if I possibly could (and maybe can). I lost friends in 9/11, and know a couple of others who almost died from the toxic dust (no joke – brother in law almost died from a thyroid condition it caused). For that America hater to gloat on the graves of the unfound victims is to spit on the memories of every soul who died on that day. Horribly, my expectation is worse than any posed so far – I actually fear that he’s enough of a malicious meglomaniac that he’ll make some remark along the lines of honoring the “heroes” who flew the planes into the towers.

Bloomberg is supposed to know better in light of history, but he’s still infected by the liberal affliction Chamberlain had; the belief that SOME good lies in the core of all men which can be cultivated like flowers to turn devils from their evil ways. In this case, Bloomberg, a nanny-state idealist with kindergarten morals and whose true God is money, swears sheer capitalism will covert Ahmadinejad into a “reasonable peaceful man.” A fanatic who will happily slip nuclear weapons under the table to terrorists to do his bidding without “fingerprints” tracing him back. Notice how Russia and Germany are cozying up to Iran to get themselves off a nuclear terrorist target list, and more to follow.
Bloomberg might be a financial whiz but he is as streetwise as a baby in a battlefield. When the crowd meets this dictator, they should link arms presenting him no path of access to the World Trade Center, the UN, or any other American site. The chant should be singular and easy, and in unison, and in a voice the entire Middle East shall not soon dismiss.

There will be some Marines in town that day. They are filming a commercial from 0300 – 0700 in Times Square and Dinner Jacket wants to start sight seeing around 1000. Seems like maybe these guys might want to meet the “Fearless Leader”

Where is the President on this? Seriously, the guy acts like the biggest problem we have as a country is that there aren’t enough “undocumented americans” here.
He claims he wants to lay a wreath at ground zero. This is a huge photo op for him to lay a wreath honoring the dead – the dead terrorists who perpetrated the attack. That is my view on what old “Gollum of Arabia” is up to.
And while the announcement has been that he intends to visit at 10 AM, don’t believe it. He can show up there at ANY TIME during his stay in NYC.
Only in America…I’m not sure if insanity like this is what makes us great, or weakens us. It’s apparent that the people of this country aren’t weak. It’s the politicians we elect who no longer have backbones. I like Mitt’s idea…arrest him on the spot.
