The thoroughly corrupted New York Times

MoveOn.org says it will make up the ad rate difference. This was the most snort-worthy sentence in the Times’ coverage of itself. Via the NYTimes’ Caucus blog:

We try not to let any business force influence our reporting and judgments. That’s just a journalistic standard. You may not believe it, but it’s true.

Coffee spew in 3, 2, 1…

***
Blogger Bob Owens was right all along when he smelled a NYTimes rat lurking in the MoveOn.org “Betray Us” ad deal. He reacts to the NYT ombudsman’s admission that the paper violated its ad policies in giving MoveOn.org a special, military-bashing discount here.

The paper says it was an innocent “mistake.”

Mistake, my a**.

Did MoveOn.org get favored treatment from The Times? And was the ad outside the bounds of acceptable political discourse?

The answer to the first question is that MoveOn.org paid what is known in the newspaper industry as a standby rate of $64,575 that it should not have received under Times policies. The group should have paid $142,083. The Times had maintained for a week that the standby rate was appropriate, but a company spokeswoman told me late Thursday afternoon that an advertising sales representative made a mistake.

The answer to the second question is that the ad appears to fly in the face of an internal advertising acceptability manual that says, “We do not accept opinion advertisements that are attacks of a personal nature.” Steph Jespersen, the executive who approved the ad, said that, while it was “rough,” he regarded it as a comment on a public official’s management of his office and therefore acceptable speech for The Times to print.

By the end of last week the ad appeared to have backfired on both MoveOn.org and fellow opponents of the war in Iraq — and on The Times. It gave the Bush administration and its allies an opportunity to change the subject from questions about an unpopular war to defense of a respected general with nine rows of ribbons on his chest, including a Bronze Star with a V for valor. And it gave fresh ammunition to a cottage industry that loves to bash The Times as a bastion of the “liberal media.”

The last few, lefty defenders of the New York Times continue to delude themselves that its liberal bias is relegated to its editorial pages.

No, the bias has reached full-blown metastasis.

The best defense is a good offense, especially if you don’t have a defense. Moveon.org took out an ad correctly complaining that General Petraeus was cooperating with the White House to mislead the American people about the situation in Iraq. Something he had promised not to do. Rather than defend the General’s actions (there is no defense), you huff and puff about how much the newspaper charged them for the ad.

Oh, that was after you huffed and puffed about the wording of the ad, which had a stupid pun over the fact that Petraeus was betraying a promise.

Let’s hear you defend what the General did instead. That’s the issue here.

This is absolutely crazy. Giving a discount to MoveOn should get someone fired. I think the “MSM liberal bias” card is way overplayed, but, holy cow. I very much doubt a group like the Concerned Women of America would get such a rate. And if they did, the outrage would be felt across the country.

    LGM -

What proof do you have that the General lied in any of his testimony, except the fact that his findings and proposals were in line with the Administrations?

It seems as if the ONLY truth to liberals is that which is in direct opposition to George W. Bush.

You, and other liberals, have completely closed your senses to anything which this administration says – or anything anyone else says which is in agreement with them.

The fact is that someone like General Petraeus, who has honorably served this country since the Viet Nam War era, and was unanimously approved for his position by the congress ( Democrats included ), has not shown one bit of dishonorable behavior in his career.

But, suddenly, because his views are lies because they are in line with a President whom you despise.

    That is modern-day liberalism defined.

He speaks the truth and when a democrat tries to tell the truth about Iraq he is immediately attacked by moveon.org. They even eat their own. Despicable behavior.

The General worked with our government to provide a report based on his experience in both the military and Iraq.

Patraeus is not a puppet, and was not coerced or forced to say what he said.

Even Katie Couric, the darling of the MSM, admitted there was “progress” in Iraq during her recent trip there.

And I think Patraeus’ service to this country throughout his military career speaks volumes about his character. He has more honor in his little finger than the entire Democratic congress.

The issue goes beyond that, however. It goes to the conduct of the NYT and whether or not the NYT is a reliable source of information – it isn’t.

They lied about their discount to MoveOn.org, they have no journalistic standards, and continually spew liberally-biased, misinformation on a daily basis.

If you’re rushing to defend MoveOn.org and the Times, it speaks volumes about what you consider decent behavior.

The Left loves to squeal that Bushitler has chilled speech and fomented a climate of fear in which criticism has been declared treasonous and blah-blah-woof-woof.

Yet despite repeatedly revealing national security secrets and pronouncing themselves as the final arbiters over what should be a national secret and what shouldn’t – i.e. if a Dem is Prez, it would be – the Times (and WaPo) remain open for business. Would similar anti-government media outlets be permitted in Iran or Venezuela?

Dubya hasn’t shut them down and imprisoned (or executed) their reporters and editors for their treasons. Hell, Dubya doesn’t even care to find the leaks or have Gonzo prosecute Sandy Burglar for erasing history from the National Archives.

Why yes he is! And thanks to the wrist-slapping Dubya Justice Dept. under the ruthless whip hand of Alberto “VO5″ Gonzales, he will have his security clearances restored in 2008, just in time to finish purging any records which may reflect poorly on the feckless non-response to Islamofascist terror during the Clinton Regime.

The only question remains whether Hillary! will pardon Burglar for his 2008 crimes as her first act in office or whether she’ll let him rot in prison – Webb Hubble/Susan McDougal style – until she’s finished packing the White House silver into her luggage when she moves out?

lgm, perhaps your statement comes from the outrage the left put up when it came time for Petraeus to submit his report. Memory serves that since his report was going to portray accurately what was going on in Iraq (i.e. progress) the left started calling it the “Bush Report”, since it ultimately would be submitted on behalf of and “by” the Bush Administration.

Trouble is, it HAD to be the “Bush Report”, since BY LAW, those reports are required to be officially submitted by the President.

If you want to take exception to the report, fine. It still doesn’t mean you’re going to be right with your criticisms. But at least do so on the grounds of the substance of the report – which was given by an honorable man doing a difficult job. Don’t take exception to the report because it was the “Bush Report”.
