Another attack on the Blue Angels rebuffed

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 25, 2007 08:15 PM

San Francisco drove the Marines away, but the latest attempt to kick out the Blue Angels has failed:

San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly’s hopes of halting the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels show from performing its aerial acrobatics over the city during Fleet Week crashed today when the board of supervisors failed the resolution.

Supervisors voted down the resolution just before 2:30 p.m. Newly appointed interim Supervisor Carmen Chu, who attended her first meeting today as the representative for District 4, voted against the resolution.

Daly camouflaged his anti-military motives by playing the safety card, but the board did not buy it:

Daly submitted the resolution because he said it is “not a necessary risk that the city needs to take.” He believes that having the fighter pilot exhibition over a densely populated area like San Francisco poses an unwarranted risk to life and property.

“It is strictly for entertainment and an accident would cause significant loss of life,” Daly said.

The Blue Angels had its first air show in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1946. About 15 million spectators see the Blue Angels in air shows each year.

Blue Angels’ air shows have resulted in 26 fatalities nationally during the past 60 years.

Will Daly give it a rest now? Not bloody likely. As sure as fog rises over the bay, you can count on hardcore leftists in San Francisco to keep attacking the military. It’s in their DNA.

Personally, I never miss an opportunity to watch the Blue Angels or the USAF Thunderbirds. These demonstration flights are awesome and very inspiring. San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly’s efforts to deny the citizens of northern California this spectacle is wrong and borders on un-American.

May we have a different turn of the phrase for the headline like:
Marines Shun San Francisco, because the city smells like “something”? I had some choice things to put in the quotes, but they were probably over the line.

MM - you do great work! I start the day with your links, HotAir and Boortz.

I wouldn’t care if SF lost the Blue Angels and gained their own Katrina.

I keep repenting, but it isn’t working.
May God have mercy on my soul. I truly repent!

‘Cause like this evening, I finally saw that new SF DEPICTION of the Last Supper, created in anticipation of the SF PERVERT PRIDE DEBAUCLE of the re-enactment of a Bablylonian Sodom and Gomorah.

    Just so phryeaqueing BARFING.

Is Daly the same SF politician who thinks we don’t even NEED a military??

It’s been years since I’ve been able to go to an air show, but I’ve seen both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels, as well as the Canadian Snowbirds (back when Daddy was stationed at Fort Hood and they’d have air shows at Biggs Army Air Field).

San Antonio is maybe a bit too far inland for Fleet Week, but Houston/Galveston/Beaumont is big enough, or Corpus Christi has an NAS still, doesn’t it? Those are both close enough to me.

Gerardo Sandoval is the supervisor who said in 2005 on Hannity & Colmes that the U.S. should not have a military. Even Alan Colmes couldn’t believe what he was saying:

ALAN COLMES, CO-HOST: This is Alan in New York. Should we not have military?

SANDOVAL: I don’t think we should have a military. Absolutely.

COLMES: We shouldn’t have a military? Wait a minute. Hold on. The United States should not have a military?

SANDOVAL: What good has it done for us in the last five years? That’s right. What good has it done us…

    HANNITY: Good grief.

COLMES: The United States should not have a military?

    SANDOVAL: That’s correct.

    COLMES: Are you kidding me?

SANDOVAL: The United States should not have a military. All in all, we would be in much, much, much better shape.

COLMES: What do you want to defend ourselves — what do you want to defend ourselves with?

SANDOVAL: Well, you got cops. It’s called the Coast Guard. There’s lots of things different.

COLMES: You want to send cops to defend our shores if we’re attacked? You want to send cops overseas if we’re attacked? Cops?

SANDOVAL: You want to send people abroad to start these wars.

Well, I’d care. Back in the 80s when I spent some time in California, San Francisco used to be one of my favorite places to visit. Rather than simply write it off to the moonbats, I’d hope that somehow, someday there’ll be a way to salvage it.

Doesn’t sound like that’ll happen in my lifetime, though. Oh, well; at least I can keep my fond memories…

I like nothing better than being able to watch any of the Military aerial demonstration teams at an Air Show. The Blue Angels blow just about everybody else away. Would really like to catch their show this year, but not scheduled for Idaho.

Watched the Thunderbirds since they were in F-100s and was able to refuel the F-16s the year they transferred from the T-38 (very bad year before they lost all but one member of the team). Begged us not to scratch the paint they were so stable you couldn’t miss the aerial refueling receptacle with the boom. The yahoos actually refueled in wing tip formation something considered to be highly dangerous and not approved by the Air Force. I was able to bring the wife along (she was still active duty at the time) and we were able to take some great pictures.

Was at the Mountain Home AFB Air Show and watched the pilot fly the aircraft into the ground that year. I lost the visual right after he took off in the sun and my wife stated he was going to crash and I caught visual again right as his canopy separated. Crash happened so fast the next thing I saw was the fireball that just missed the Control Tower. I heard someone saw the pilot got out and they stated he stood up waved and then collapsed. Ejection trauma is not good on the body, but it sure beats the alternative. Unfortunately it was pilot error, but I heard the pilot was still allowed to fly in the viper squadron. Back in my day he would have been flying a desk, but pilots cost too much to train and as the old saying goes about screwing up in an aircraft, there are those that have, those that will, and those that will again. Had my own bad days too every eat an F-4? I almost did. You know you are having a bad day when you can see the pilot’s eye color. Been there done that have the emotional scares to prove it.

Sorry about being long winded, but brings back great memories from being able to participate in Air Shows and get to watch the hot shots do their thing. I really appreciate them risking their lives demonstrating many techniques used in basic pilot training and some that are strictly for the best pilots we have. Too bad San Francisco’s Communist Government can’t get past their hate for the Military.

If they are so concerned about safety, why were the chase scenes for the movie “The Rock” allowed to be shot? Hummers and sports cars careening through the streets of San Francisco doesn’t sound very safe to me. Also, there are several “communities” in San Francisco whose cultural practices are, shall we say, less than safe. Should we not permit those, either?

I know this is slightly off-topic, but does have a military / liberal-viewpoint overtone to it, and there’s nowhere else to voice this at this time.

This is from today’s DailyKos - a poll they’re running:

    Poll
Should the U.S. bring back the draft so that all our young men and women—including cowardly Republicans who cheer the war but refuse to fight in it—will be equally on the hook for defending our freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan?

    0 Yes

    0 No

    0 Not sure/No opinion

They seem to forget the history of the military being populated by a majority of conservative / republican voters.

What - do they think that LIBERALS are the ones fighting?

jrlingreenbay as far as the draft goes I can speak from being in the all volunteer Military (USAF) since 4 Nov 75 – 30 Sep 00 and working as a Civilian 5 Nov 01 to present. Not NO, but “HELL NO!” The last thing any Commander or NCO would want in their unit is a non-volunteer they are nothing but trouble. The Koskids just don’t get it. None of the recruiters are having problems filling their quotas and we are actually turning people away. We have the most highly motivated and educated Military in the world, who would want to start drafting anyone that doesn’t meet the standards by forcing a less than qualified individual into the ranks. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
