Convicted, disbarred, disgraced jihad lawyer Lynne Stewart to teach ethics class

You have got to be freaking kidding me (via Federal Review, hat tip – John Stephenson):
A disbarred lawyer convicted of aiding terrorists will be teaching at an upcoming law school ethics conference.
Lynne Stewart, who was found guilty of conspiring with terrorist Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, will be speaking October 16 at Hofstra Law School’s “Legal Ethics: Lawyering on the Edge,” in Hempstead, New York.
The speaking engagement comes only a year after Stewart was sentenced to twenty-eight months in prison on charges of conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists.
It’s on Stewart’s calendar at her website, where you can see she’s keeping nice and busy. The oral arguments for the appeal of her conviction are slated for December 18, 2007.
Oh, you’ll love how Hofstra University describes the convicted, disbarred, disgraced jihad lawyer in its press release about the upcoming conference:
As usual, Hofstra Law School’s Legal Ethics Conference will feature many additional prominent experts in the field of ethics, as well as preeminent criminal defense and civil rights practitioners, including Hofstra Law’s own Professor Monroe Freedman; Hofstra Law Professor Leon Friedman; Professor Stephen Gillers from New York University School of Law; Adam Liptak, the national legal correspondent for The New York Times; Professor Abbe Smith from Georgetown University Law Center; Lynne Stewart, who has defended many unpopular clients over the years; and Ronald Kuby, the well known defense attorney and co-host of the WABC morning show, Curtis & Kuby, and guest-anchor on Court TV, who will deliver the last address of the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
“…Lynne Stewart, who has defended many unpopular clients over the years…”
Attention, Hofstra Law School: Do your homework.

Update: A good friend/reader reminds me of when Stanford U’s law school extended and then rescinded an offer of a visiting mentorship position to Stewart in 2002 before her conviction:
On Nov. 8, Sullivan released a statement saying that she made the decision to revoke Stewart’s title after it had “come to [her] attention that Ms. Stewart has expressed sympathy for and tacit endorsement of the use of directed violence to achieve social change.” In the statement, Sullivan said she had decided it was “not appropriate” to make Stewart a David W. Mills Public Interest Mentor.
Students supportive of Sullivan’s decision have argued that it is unfitting for a law school to confer an official position upon any attorney who has advocated circumventing the rule of law to achieve societal change, or in Stewart’s case, endorsing violence instead of democratic legal processes. Student opposition to Stewart has drawn upon a 1995 New York Times article that quoted her as saying, “I don’t believe in anarchist violence but in directed violence. That would be violence directed at the institutions which perpetuate capitalism, racism and sexism, and at the people who are the appointed guardians of those institutions, and accompanied by popular support.”
Says my reader:
[The disinvitation] was based just on her indictment and her past writings about the legitimacy of political violence. Stanford is capable of all the typical academic silliness, but as I’m fond of saying, it ain’t Berkeley. Apparently Hofstra doesn’t care. Hey, if convicted Weather Underground bomber Bernadette (aka Bernadine) Dohrn is on the Northwestern Law School faculty, why not Lynne Stewart?

Yet educators and lawyers wonder why they are held in such low regard.
I wish I could say I’m surprised.
Incidentally, the apple never falls far from the tree…her son has taken over the firm from Mom and is busy trying to bulldoze the First Amendment.
The subject is “Lawyering on the Edge.”
Ms. Stewart can give a first hand explanation how she went over the edge and conspired with and provided material support to her terrorist client.
However, she is such a far left true believer that she still doesn’t think that she did anything wrong.
Clearly, she is not the person to explain to the Hofstra law students what she did which violated the State Bar legal ethics rules and was illegal.
New York universities are going for the terrorist trifecta!
Come on now, who’s next?
Stewart is a traitor yet she is to give a lecture on ethics. I would really love to know what these universities think the definition of treason is.
When did Cousin Oliver get a law degree?
DKK
Moral inversion.
Smug, solid and established moral inversion.
What’s sad is that although our public education years ago became a bad joke in comparison to other developed nations, at least we used to be able to say that our colleges and universities made up for it.
Not anymore. Having Stewart teaching ethics is a slap in the face to any student with a brain or a sens of morality. If I were going to Hofstra, I’d demand a tuition refund.
“Lawyering on the edge” indeed. Sounds more like lawyering over the edge.
It makes sense. “Class, this is what I did. Do the exact opposite. No more classes needed for the rest of the term.”
Hiring Stewart to lecture at a legal ethics conference is like inviting the captain of the Titanic to teach a course on navigation.
I feel like I am in a time warp.
Does anyone else?
Seems that what USED to be evil is now good.
Who will be next? OBL for Prez?
Gayle, you’re right. I think gravity’s been reversed.
A few more suggestions:
- Jayson Blair to teach journalism ethics.
- Sandy Berger to hold a symposium on document preservation.
Oh, and I think Mike Nifong’s available to teach Constitutional law.
She could use a shave.
Gayle and BIG,
My other suggestions:
-Larry Flynt to teach art therapy
-Bill Clinton to teach about sex education in politics.
-”Screech” can teach about the adult film industry as a former child star.
-Janet Reno can lead a symposium on communism and gestapo tactics in the 21st century America.
-Elton John can teach a course on religions and intolerance for alternative lifestyles.
-Barry Manilow can teach a course on censorship and the “fairness doctrine”
-Nancy Pelosi can lead a symposium on hypocracy and gun control (co-facillitated with former DC Mayor Marion Barry)
-Barney Frank can teach a course on congressional ethics from a rainbow callboy perspective.
And of course, Ted Kennedy can teach PE with an emphasis on swimming.
-
Janet Reno…..LOL! Fugly woman!
She could teach a woman how to be a REAL man.
All kidding aside, didn’t this already happen? Or was that Stephen Glass?
I would have thought this would be a violation that would cost a Law School their ACCREDITATION.
IF NOT, WHAT DOES IT TAKE???
Anyone got an e-mail address for these bozos???
Newsflash, you can’t “do it again” How’s being disbarred going for ya? and get a makeover for gosh sakes!
Another day and yet another example of double standards from the “educational elitists” …
Columbia invites Ahmedinjad but rejects the Minutemen …
Seton Hall representative on H&C last night said that they refused to allow a scheduled speech and forum with Tom Delay because of his “conviction” that removed him from office … bogus as most of the charges have now been dropped, just as T.D. said they would be when he left office, and there have been no convictions on anything to this point in time …
Now, Hofstra invites a “convicted and disbarred” felon to speak on “ethics” to a bunch of future lawyers … gimme a break …
I guess Stewart will be at Seton Hall and Columbia next week …
I am so glad none of my kids had any desire to go to any of these Ivy League and so-called “respected” East Coast universities …
Times have changed and the “respected” amd “best” characterizations of these socialist agenda driven universities has long since been over …
My apologies to anyone on here that holds a degree from any of these places that I may have offended … I am talking about what has happened and the current climate there … not impugning the past record or your degree from one of these places …
At LEAST take a shave, for goodness sake!
Boy, does she need a berka!!
Suprised NO McGreevy is teaching ethics as well. Our country has lost it’s mind and standards of right and wrong….
Who better to teach ethics to lawyers! My two ex-lawyers (Julius Echeles, Alan Masters) have five felony convictions between them.
I had a college professor when earning my BS in Manufacturing Engineering from Southern Illinois University at Travis AFB, state that for every engineer that graduates from college there are 10 lawyers also graduating. He did not think very highly of those in the legal profession. He wanted to see the US close all legal schools for 10 years just to thin the herd. I believe he was on to something.
Hofstra Law School’s “Legal Ethics: Lawyering
on the Edgeuntil you get caught”It is unbelievable that anybody wants to hear what she has to say. It must be nice to be getting paid off by Saudi Arabian blood money while teaching ‘ethics’. This world has turned upside down.
Step right up! Come see the Bearded Lady at the Hofstra U. Law School Sideshow!
“Say it ain’t so, Joe. Say it ain’t so.”
The line in the Hofstra release that caughy MY attention was this one: “…will feature many additional prominent experts in the field of ethics…”
She’s “prominent in the field of ethics” because she was disbarred for not having any.
As a Canadian who has held the U.S. in high regard, I am left to ask ” What is going on with your country?”
Rust never sleeps,Blaise. Liberalism, as seen here is a disease. It creeps ever so slowly until we wake up as we are today and we are amazed at it’s progress.
Are you familiar with the phraise FUBAR.
We have gone too far from our Founding Fathers – and we need a strong return to FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES AND ETHICS.
Samuel Adams – A general dissolution of the principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy…. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but once they lose their virtue, they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader…. If virtue and knowledge are diffused among the people, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great security.
Samuel Adams – The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men.
Samuel Adams – He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of his country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man…The sum of all is, if we would most truly enjoy this gift of Heaven, let us become a virtuous people.
Samuel Adams:
If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.
John Adams – Be not intimidated… nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberties by any pretense of politeness, delicacy, or decency. These, as they are often used, are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery and cowardice.
He who is void of virtuous attachments in private life is, or very soon will be, void of all regard for his country. There is seldom an instance of a man guilty of betraying his country, who had not before lost the feeling of moral obligations in his private connections.
– Samuel Adams
How strangely will the Tools of a Tyrant pervert the plain Meaning of Words!
– Samuel Adams
Samuel Butler – Authority intoxicates, And makes mere sots of magistrates; The fumes of it invade the brain, And make men giddy, proud and vain.
Gillette’s new poster child. That is all that comes to mind for me when looking at her picture.
As far as the dirty lawyer teaching ethics…I can’t even comment. The overt comdedic nature of this statement speaks for itself.
As a thirty-something professional male with a neatly trimmed beard, I must say that I am strangely embarrased at the ease with which Ms. Stewarts facial hair defiantly sprouts out in all directions bravely screaming hoarsely to the world “I am woman, hear me roar!!” If only my timid beard could be as brazenly independent and free-spirited as hers.
Don’t let them off that easy…
I believe Larry Craig is on his way over to teach Public Hygiene as well.
It’s altogether appropriate for Stewart to be discussed at length in a legal ethics program. That she should be allowed to open her mouth at one is shameful — even if she were introduced in the same manner that Lee Bolliger introduced Ahmadinejad at Columbia.
Get the bulldozers out. Hofstra Law School has GOT TO GO!
(Beldar- are you from France?
)
As disgraceful as the legal profession can be, there are still quite a few good ones.
Having said that, I still wonder how much Stewart prostituted her ethics for in
dhimmitude to Abdul Top Ramen. It’s too much to believe this opportunistic
sham was doing it pro Sonny bono.
Stewart got off easy. She should have been hung for her treasonous behavior.
You know what they say… Them that can’t do, teach…
A friend of mine who is a reputable criminal defense lawyer (yes, there are such people) told me that one of the first lessons taught in law school is that if someone has to go to prison, make sure that it is the client and not the lawyer.
Perhaps Ms. Stewart was not paying attention during that particular lecture.
She even looks like Michael Moore!
