Red on Red: GOP corruptocrat gets a conservative challenger; Plus: The latest on the Ted Stevens scandal
I’ve said many times that Republicans can’t demand that Democrats clean their house unless the GOP handles its own slime.
RedState gets it, and today asks grass-roots conservatives for help in supporting a challenge to “corrupt, embattled John Doolittle, the national face of Republican scandal.”
The challenger is military intelligence officer Eric Egland, a familiar face to Hot Air viewers and blog readers. We interviewed him at CPAC earlier this year. He has contributed thoughtful commentary to Power Line. And now he’s stepping up to the plate to unseat Doolittle.
More:
Doolittle had to step down from the House Appropriations Committee because of the pending investigation against him. The FBI has already raided his home. But Doolittle won’t retire because if he gets re-elected one more time he can get his full congressional pension.
This is a seat that will stay Republican. But, should Doolittle stay in it, it’s a seat that could drag down other Republicans because of Doolittle’s scandal. In 2004, Bush won it with over 60% of the vote.
Eric Egland is a stellar candidate, a small government conservative, and our choice for CA-04.
We need to take our party back. And Eric Egland’s race would be a great start.
Go to Egland’s campaign site here and spread the word.

On another dirty GOP front, the Ted Stevens corruption scandal deepens:
A jury found former Alaska state House Speaker Peter Kott (R) guilty of taking bribes from former Veco Chief Executive Bill Allen, a decision that may have implications for Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who is under FBI investigation for his ties to Allen.
The Department of Justice announced the verdict Wednesday. During the 15-day trial in Anchorage, Allen testified that he paid for some of Stevens’s home renovations.
Kott, a member of the Alaska House from 1992 to 2006, was convicted of conspiracy, extortion under cover of official right and bribery. He faces a maximum of 35 years in jail; his sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 7.
In exchange for assurances he would cast votes in Veco’s favor on a key petroleum production tax proposal, the jury found that Kott solicited bribes and received cash, checks and the promise of a future job with Veco. Trial evidence included more than 60 recordings of conversations involving Kott and former Veco executives.
The Associated Press last week reported that the FBI secretly had recorded two phone calls between Stevens and Allen.
Allen and former Veco Vice President Richard Smith pleaded guilty in May to providing more than $400,000 in corrupt payments to public officials from the state of Alaska.

Excellent! Republicans can and should set the leadership example. Throw the bums out.
That’s the thing…we’re willing to clean up our house when necessary, but the Dems never do. They just point their fingers at us and tell us how bad we are. Ugh.
The Stupid Party purges itself of its crooks and perverts and the Treason Media reports it as proof that the Stupid Party is awash in corruption.
A Dem get caught with cash in the freezer and the Stupid Party moves to protect him from the FBI. Dems actually have sex with teenage pages (not just send creepy e-mails) and their boyfriends run prostitution rings and they ascend to the highest levels of respect. A Dem can leave a woman to drown while he gets his cover story together or recruit for the Klan and oppress blacks and become the elder statesman of their party.
Yeah, that’s fair.
True enough Dirk…
But in all things but War and Fights, I’d rather lose with integrity than win by cheating.
Sure, but while you’re losing with integrity, the spoils will flow like honey to those less constrained by those silly antiquated morals.
I blogged about how cheaters always win when Barry Bonds ‘roided his way into the record books, but it’s applicable here. Yes, it’s the morally superior position to be in, but a loser overall and no one ever gets praised for losing fair and square.
It’s sad that there is no profit in doing the right thing and it’s tough to see those who tossed their moral compasses out win it all.
I’m looking into how I can help from Southern Cal. Probably here from his office soon. California needs him and more like him, stat
Red on “Red”
Got more .02 when I get some time. I’m a huge Egland fan. Fantastic news!
Congratulations, MM. This liberal is impressed that you can see both sides of the corruption issue.
There are two levels of corruption. This one is simply lawbreaking, mostly bribery. The other is votes and earmarks in exchange for campaign contributions. Do you support sunshine regs that would help get rid of this too?
lgm,
In case you hadn’t noticed, MM is one of the few that has been preaching about cleaning out the corruption in the Republican party for a long time.
Go crawl back under your bridge, troll.
MM is definately one of the few commentators that has applied the same standard across party lines.
Another good commentator is Bill O’Reily (even when I don’t agree with him).
To bad alan combs, jon stewart, and liberals can’t do the same thing-then democracy would be even better than what it is now.

Now this makes me feel a little better about my party. I’ve been so disillusioned lately, I almost got out of the part. We need to keep up the heat on these crooks and their defenders…half of these guys couldn’t get much of a job because of their shakey past history..but anyone can run for office I guess…all you have to do is fool the people…stop corruption..make them accountable…term limits sounds like a good start…and make it so they don’t become instant millionaires the second they step into office…
I am so sick of everyone in congress pulling the old CYA crap. I think we should start with the premise that if their an incumbant, they should go. Let them prove to us that they are worthy to remain in office. It’s happening on both sides of the aisle.
Term limits at all levels should be the norm even for mayors like Joe Riley in Charleston who has been the mayor for 32 years. His Fire Chief lost 9 firefighters in one fire and the mayor doesn’t see anything wrong with his policies even afer OSHA fined them the maximum for not having up to date policies which most likely contributed to their deaths. The “Good Ole Boys” are as strong as ever. Time for them to go. As far as I’m concerned, losing 9 firefighters on one fire is prima facia evidence of incompetence.
Sorry, had to vent that frustation. No one in Charleston seems to be listening.
Or a really massive, horrible fire…
Beating the bell curve is like that.
How is replacing Doolittle with Eric Egland a losing proposition?
The polls show what people think of Congress, it can only help to run great candidates instead of crooks. And please, if convicted of a crime can we see that they don’t collect their pensions? Oh wait that would be so “unfair”…after all that “public service”.
Please – stop “servicing” us.
governmentdrone said (#9):
Now there’s a way to reduce partisanship, liberals should ignore conservative web sites and true believing conservatives should insult those who forget.
And about the substance: MM and other conservative bloggers complain endlessly about corrupt Democrats even though the statistics (number investigated, indicted, resigned, …) show more tainted Republicans. I truly appreciate that MM sees it as a two sided issue and said so with no snark.
When I first saw Michelle’s interview with Eric Egland at CPAC I was really knocked out of my chair. The guy was so competent, so action oriented and motivating, I thought I was dreaming. Watch the video to fully understand. I ordered his book, ‘The Troops Need You, America’ and devoured it. My ‘Victory’ mindset that ensued was unprecedented. I immediately started to brainstorm about how to implement his six action steps to immediately provide real support to the troops in Iraq, in addition to the care packages and prayers. However, it quickly became apparent to me, that with a Congress crammed with Corruptocrats and Crapweasels ( to borrow 2 terms from MM), and with a hectic day job and kids, it was going to be a real miracle to pull off anything tangible from Egland’s suggestions in his book, namely gathering as large a group of people and get in front of the media to strongly encourage members of congress to implement some or all of Maj Egland’s common sense action items to help the troops in Iraq. (Sorry for crazy run on, had a few cold ones
).
And when the realization that besides the MM interview on Hotair, and besides a cable news show appearance here and there, that his book and ideas was so quickly lost in the shuffle of the day to day…I have to say that I had written his cause off. Shame on me. Then this morning, what GREAT news…I was so happy to see that he is running for Office. I was so so silly for ever thinking that he may be down in the dumps that his book and action plan not being a runaway smash hit. Running. For. Office.
Silly. Me.
That made my day. Man I love MM and her blog. Really and truly.
The Radio Patriot has endorsed Eric Egland. The endorsement is posted on the site’s sidebar. We’ve interviewed him on my radio program several times. Good man. We need more like him in Congress.
