I wasn’t talking health…although it can easily be argued it better for your health.

Vegetarianism and, even better, veganism is a higher choice morally and ethically because it takes into account the effects meat eating has on animals and the planet.

OMG can you say SMUG? And someone ragged on me the other day because I was proud of my kids. You are obviously a liberal in disguise. Because only a liberal could be such a pompous butt (with the possible exception of the fundamentalist religion spokespeople around here.)

I don't generally eat meat. (Cheese, Eggs and fish yes) I don't avoid meat because I'm some stuck up, higher evolved, I'm better than everyone else because I don't slaughter animals moron, I just plain don't like it. However with a household 8-12 people and 3 generations I try to cook something for everyone. And that includes cooking meat.

OMG save me from intellectuals. Sounds like a 'potted plant' from Mistress Arianna's site.

I have a lot of respect for people who are vegetarians. I tried it once and then I got so weak I couldn't exercise.

My beef--no pun intended--is with PETA. Sure, we need people to remind us that animals need respect, but they always are about dogs and cats, never about endangered species. I just think they like condemning meat-eaters while letting poachers roam the earth freely.

Here's the thing about meat--I'll be the first in line to save a chicken or whatever when all the animals are used to feed starving people in places like Appalachia, Mississippi Delta and Pine Ridge.

Boomer... your story reminds me of my first cross country road trip while i was in college. I drove from San Luis Obispo (near LA) to Boston for a wedding (and an ex girlfriend ;) ). On the drive to Boston, I blew out a tire and had to spend all of my $ on fixing it ( a la U-Turn). Anyway to make a long story short I did not have much $$ for for on the drive back home from Boston and when I got to Texas ate a 72 oz steak with all the fixins. You should have seen the waitress' faces while I finished in less than 30 minutes... and the food was free!

Okay.

No one said humans and animals were the same. It's obvious, we humans are capable of so much more. We have a higher consciousness. But that doesn't mean it's Ok to be cruel or ignore suffering of other beings.

We have the ability to discern right and wrong and make ethical choices but too often we dont' use it. The only thing that matters with animals is if they can suffer...and surely they can.

Soliel,

You may or may not be the only person on this site that did not realize I was kidding. Reread what I wrote above.

Personally I have nothing against animals. Dogs can't raise my taxes. Felines can't block traffic with protests about nonsense. Iguanas can't screw up public schools.

Liberals mess up society more than animals ever could, which is why I rooted for the Cincinnati Bengals to defeat the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football.

Unfortunately, humans, even liberals, are superior to animals, even tigers...Patriots 34, Bengals 13.

The Pats ate the Bengals for dinner! Somebody call Peta now! It wouldn't be the first time this year they harassed the NFL, but I won't go there.

There's a wonderful book called
Dominion.
It's a call to mercy in regards to what we do against animals. It's written by a conservative.

Rick

I wasn't talking health...although it can easily be argued it better for your health.

Vegetarianism and, even better, veganism is a higher choice morally and ethically because it takes into account the effects meat eating has on animals and the planet.

I did not say I was superior. I have my strengths as you do, too. I recognize there are plenty of ways to be noble in the world and being veg is one of them.

Blackty Grrrrr the animals that have to live in factory farms and face a gruesome end in the slaughterhouse certainly didn't ask for it. They did nothing but were found in hapless circumstances. I can't believe you said such a thing...I've never, in all my years of arguing this issue, have I heard anyone say that animals deserve such abuse and had it "coming to them". Just proves that we humans will and can rationalize almost any habit, no matter how little substance we can give for it.

I am conservative because most of the time conservatives are right. But on this issue...me thinks they need to grow up!

Who says these animals are innocent? I have it on good authority by a well respected anonymous moral authority that many of these animals had it coming. Their parents were awful animals, and their kids would have been awful animals.

I know I am right because the anonymous study I cite is beyond reproach, because it agrees with me, which confirms I am right.

Hail to the Lord of Circular Logicians everywhere!

Time for Monday Night Football and a burger.

Soliel:

Whoa....slow down there.

If you want to eat meat, fine, do it, but don’t embarrass yourself by putting down others who actually have a higher standard than you

I take GREAT issue with the idea that not eating meat is somehow a "higher standard."

Higher opposed to what? Equal is fine - one man's steak is another's crap sandwich. But there is nothing inherently superior to being a vegetarian at all. There is ample evidence that until early man began to eat meat, humans were small, helpless creatures with puny brains. Eating meat - cooked meat as it turns out - allowed our species to stop cowering in the tall grass and begin to build tools.

We sure as hell didn't get larger and smarter by eating alfalfa sprouts. We had been doing that for 2 million years. Scrounging for veggies and scavenging the kills of other animals made up the human diet until Homo Erectus showed up about 1.5 million years ago and started the hunt for game in earnest.

Nope. Get off the high horse and stop pretending to be superior. Meat - as all things on this planet - taken in moderation is extremely healthy for you. And choosing not to eat it makes you different - not better.

Okay, I must chime in here.

I love Michelle Malkin and am very grateful she has a blog. I read it everyday. I also read Frontpagemagazine.com. I consider myself a conservative...but guess what? I am also a longtime member of PeTA and been veg for about 22 years.

I think refraining from eating meat is a noble act. It takes thoughtfulness, restraint and discernment. It means you have standards. It's not the only noble act we can do in this world, but it's a significant one.

There are many reasons to avoid meat that are humane, environmental and economic. Meat eating is destructive on many levels, not only to animals themselves but to humans as well.

If you want to eat meat, fine, do it, but don't embarrass yourself by putting down others who actually have a higher standard than you. It only shows your insecurity (can you say "tallest poppy?"). You can respect the choice without having to make the choice yourself.

Further, stop thinking it's a leftist or liberal thing to do. Sure, a fair number in the AR movement are left (and yes, even "loony left"), but there are many who are moderates and even conservative. Most of all, those who care about this are thinkers. I just read a study that said vegetarians, as a whole, have a higher Intelligence than the general population. Go ahead and Google it...and find out for yourselves.

Not all leftists care about this issue by any means. Michael Moore was just as disrespectful as all of you are on this blog. It just means you care about the horrible suffering of innocent animals at our hands. Caring about animal suffering is sweet, noble, and kind. These are ideals that conservatives should, at least theoretically, embrace and admire.

Do yourself a favor...stop being sophomoric about this issue. If you want to eat your steaks do so...but don't put down others who make more thoughtful choices.

I think refraining from eating meat is a noble act. It takes thoughtfulness, restraint and discernment. It means you have standards. It’s not the only noble act we can do in this world, but it’s a significant one.

There are many reasons to avoid meat that are humane, environmental and economic. Meat eating is destructive on many levels, not only to animals themselves but to humans as well.

If you want to eat meat, fine, do it, but don’t embarrass yourself by putting down others who actually have a higher standard than you. It only shows your insecurity (can you say “tallest poppy?”). You can respect the choice without having to make the choice yourself.

Further, stop thinking it’s a leftist or liberal thing to do. Sure, a fair number in the AR movement are left (and yes, even “loony left”), but there are many who are moderates and even conservative. Most of all, those who care about this are thinkers. I just read a study that said vegetarians, as a whole, have a higher Intelligence than the general population. Go ahead and Google it…and find out for yourselves.

Do yourself a favor…stop being sophomoric about this issue. If you want to eat your steaks do so…but don’t put down others who make more thoughtful choices.

Living in the Bay Area, we have all kinds of PETA loons wandering around, but only once have they been dumb enough to confront my wife and I. The young woman very well fed, blond dreadlocks and all asked why I thought it was okay to eat dead flesh. I looked at her leather shoes and asked why it was okay for her to wear dead skin. She gave us a glare and left and we went back to eating our Irish stew with laughter all around.

Believe it or not, some of us conservatives are vegetarian. That picture of meat is about as gross as the topless picketer. Go after PETA for being liars who have killed innocent animals in their own shelters, but don't attack all vegetarians. I would no sooner eat meat as to contribute to MoveOn.org.
