Culture of corruption, Dallas edition

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 1, 2007 01:49 PM

The feds are keeping mighty busy cracking down on corruptocrats.

Tennessee.

New Jersey.

Now, Dallas. Guess which party the suspects belong to:

Federal prosecutors this morning announced sweeping conspiracy charges against State Rep. Terri Hodge, former Mayor Pro Tem Donald Hill, low-income housing developer Brian Potashnik and 11 others.

The charges contained in a 166-page indictment include bribery and kickbacks that Hodge and Hill allegedly accepted in exchange for using their offices to assist Potashnik’s company, Southwest Housing, gain construction contracts.

In a separate indictment, prosecutors accused former council member James Fantroy of embezzling federal funds in excess of $10,000 from Paul Quinn College.

Former city planning commissioner D’Angelo Lee and Sheila Farrington, Mr. Hill’s wife, also were named, along with Cheryl Potashnik, Darren Reagan, Allen McGill, Jibreel Rashad, Rickey Robertson, Andrea Spencer, Ronald Slovacek, Kevin Dean and John Lewis.

Here’s the PDF of the complete indictment. 31 counts involving bribery, tax evasion, conspiracy and extortion throughout Dallas City Hall.

The schemes involved abuse of federal affordable housing development programs and incentives.

Time for Congress to take a closer look.

And yes, look out for race-card-playing in 3…2…1…

You did form your answer in the form of a question, and you are correct, Regulus.

You win the customary prize package:

    A cookie. :)

Funny how when it’s a Democrat involved, you rarely see their political affiliation mentioned in the story – and if you do, it’s in paragraph 3 or below.

I was wondering when this was going to start happening. It is a racket out here in California.

Of course, the media won’t report on this as aggressivly has they did the gay Republican’s lewd chats with pages, nor the Republican alleged to have been prowling for gay sex in an airport bathroom, or any number of other Republican scandals. In fact, I usually read about scandals involving Dems here on this blog before I ever see it reported on CNN.com, etc. So much for fair and balanced…especially the balanced part.

    Michelle,

We have someone here who has been described as a Mexican National on the loose and sought in the connection of a murder of a 19 year old and then setting her and her car on fire..DENTON. My husband thinks he is long gone back in Mexico by now. We have had Farmers Branch ruling on illegal aliens and now Irving is heating up..this is all happening around the outskirts of Dallas. I got a message today from the elementary school so concerned, that they wanted us to check out the local police stations online photo records of registered sex offenders…I am constantly aware, when we have day labors in our nieghborhood…who knows who they are? Is there problems in Dallas yes and then some.

term limits, 2 terms for senators and 4 terms for representatives. lobbying is only legal if the lobbyist represents a company in the jurisdiction of the elected official, otherwise both spend time in jail and large fines for CEO and Congressperson. no lobbying from foreign countries, long jail term and large fines for Congressperson. Jurisdiction means for senator: company is headquartered in their state. Jurisdiction of representative: company is geographically headquarted in your jurisdication. that would change the political landscape significantly.

Given the things that have been going on in Houston City hall I have to wonder if the Feds plan on taking that show on the road down I-45S. In Houston the city housing department has decided that no HUD money is to be used on single family or multi-family housing. yes you read that right, Housing and Urban Development money is not to be used for housing. So what exactly is it to be used for?

To be fair, local politicians in Dallas do not declare party affilliations. The posts are officially “non-partisan.” That is why the newpaper stories don’t refer to the parties of the indictees.

However, your assumption is correct that the public officials caught in this mess are Democrats across the board. While the businessmen indicted are mostly white, the public officials indicted are exclusively black. So, yes, the race-card playing has already begun. After all, the investigation has been going on publicly for two years.

I live here, and have seen this corruption all my life. It used to be the “good ‘ol Boys” network. Fat white guys that ran the city like Huey Long would.

Now the blacks took over, but did not change business as usual they took up the GOB network, but the press won’t call it that of course.

As for party affiliation, thats right, most of the time they have ‘none’, but several of those in the city council are close friends with ACORN and other Soros funded orgs. Go figure.

Thanks Michelle for opening the comments. I usually don’t want to post, but I happen to know about this a bit.
