Limbaugh did offer an apology today, but not for himself — rather for Media Matters, an organization that circulated his remarks about “phony soldiers” last week.
“I want to apologize to all of the members of the United States Military, both in uniform and out, active duty and retired, for Media Matters for America,” Limbaugh said today. “They will not apologize to you, and they will not apologize to me. I want to apologize to you on behalf of them. As all of you military personnel know, I, since (the) beginning of time and since the beginning of this program, certainly 19 years ago, have been one of the most ardent, loyal, in-awe supporters of any and all who wear the uniform — including those who disagree with the mission.”

I knew that what I learned in school would have a real world application! I just learned in logic class today that Tom Harkin’s argument against Rush (as quoted here) uses the logical fallacy of ad hominem (of the “abusive” subcategory).

What is the deal with the Democrats and:
1) The Vietnam War. Is all this focus on Vietnam bringing back some 1960’s memories for them or something? I don’t know about everyone else, but we’ve got a war in Iraq and Afghanistan going on.
2) Lying about our troops—or about BEING a troop. I have yet to see one Republican make deceptive media about our soldiers or some comment like “go insurgents go kill US troops.”
3) Trying to limit conservative free speech. Why is the House wasting our tax $$ time on Rush Limbaugh? Has he become so incredibly powerful that he’s shaking the foundations of the self-toted new and improved democrat-led House?

I think that’s right. Media Matters knows that anyone who looks into its charges will know that they are bogus. But that’s almost beside the point. Their objective (i.e., the Clintons’ objective) is to arm fellow-liberal mainstream media outlets with excuses to ignore Limbaugh (”He insulted the troops!”) and O’Reilly (”He’s a racist!”) as the election approaches. It’s all about putting Bill Clinton back in the White House.

IT’S NOT A “SMEAR” — it’s better understood as “battlespace preparation.” And the target is the traditional media; the intent is to limit the ability of people like Limbaugh or O’Reilly to drive stories in the mainstream news as we get closer to the election. Expect more of this, with more targets.
It simply is amazing how two-faced the DhimmiRATS are; Harkin is yet another one of the 25 that couldn’t bring themselves to condemn MoveOn.org.

The libs will do anything to marginalize Rush. That pesky 1st Amendment keeps getting in their way. Their acting like Rush is a member of congress. Libs don’t listen to Rush anyway. Do they really think that Conservatives are going to turn on Rush because of this lame attempt to smear him? They’re probably thinking that this type of BS will enable them to re-introduce the Fairness Doctrine. Of course, they don’t think that Murtha and Kerry calling our military murderers are going to hurt their chances.

Combine this with Sen. Reid calling Rush “unpatriotic” and you can see how disparate the Democrats are. However, the smears against Rush have to be countered before they get set in stone in the public’s collective conscience.
The real test in all this would be to poll the troops. Do they believe they are supported by Reid, Pelosi, Moveon, Murtha? Or, do they believe Limbaugh is more supportive? I bet Limbaugh wins that one 90-10.
It’s interesting. The Dems had their Internet debate and fawned all over themselves about the new media, but the real power is the power of the new media to fight back against the MSM. As has been noted here, if the Internet had been around in the 70’s Kerry would never have been a Senator. Limbaugh, O’Reilly and bloggers on the Internet can push back with clout not yet appreciated by those who fabricate stories.

The phonies Rush was pointing to are the Jesse Mcbeths and the winter soldiers syndrome that these Sentors and congressmen and woman tend to believe before they believe our brave troops. The stupidest thing about Harkin is that he had no reason to lie about his service. But that precisely the reason I so distrust politicians on a visceral level. Far too many are far too willing to say anything to get people to pay attention to them. If he’ll lie about his service he’ll lie about anything.
I’ve lived in Iowa for about 12 years and can say that I have never voted for this guy. This kind of crap is pretty disgusting. If it weren’t coming from the MoveOn crowd, one might wonder how low these guys could possibly go.
As a “dittohead”, I heard what Rush said, and these fools are doing nothing if not trying to deflect from themselves their own anti-military comments. This is beyond out-of-context. I was listening that day and he wasn’t calling any soldiers “phony”. He was literally talking about “phony soldiers”, and more specifically, this Jesse Macbeth character. This is a strategically edited soundbite. There must be leftist operatives listening around the clock for that one soundbite that will bring him down. He simply did not say what Reid and Co. are claiming.
I didn’t particularly like the sense of the Senate resolution condemning moveon.org because it was bound to end up with some type of silly tit for tat. Our founders realized that uncomfortable, even hateful, speech needed to be protected so that the average American citizen could judge it for himself. The internet and FoxNews is taking on moveon.org quite nicely and what is really needed is the repeal of the hate speech laws which are now being used arbitrarily to attack anyone who espouses a politically uncorrect position or to protect someone who espouses an unpopular politically correct position. What is also needed is some common sense law that labels pornography as something other than speech.
The dems are trying their successful Vietnam tactic that led to a denial of the Gulf of Tonkin resolution and subsequent abandoning of our allies in Vietnam. I was there…at 3,000 feet and twenty miles away in a Navy E1B aircraft equipped with a powerful radar. I directed strike aircraft to protect our ships as I saw raw video on the radar scope of at least 12 small boats darting in and around the USS Maddox. I also established relay communications with the USS Ticonderoga and heard the combat information officer aboard the USS Maddox report multiple torpedoes running under the ship. The only reason they did not sink her was the fact that the Maddox was at the end of her time on station in the Gulf of Tonkin and was low on fuel so was running high in the water. The torpedoes were set to run at a depth too low to hit her.
I have a letter of commendation for my actions that night from Admiral Roy L. Johnson to prove the above. You’ll find it in Navy records as Ser: 002-1406 dated 12 October 1964.
I subsequently served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded a chest full of medals. Two of those medals were from President Johnson who, as you might recall, caved in to public polls and MSM pressure and gave up. Another example of a Democratic politician praising heroism without showing any.

Do you think that the protesting members of Congress could even pass an English proficiency test? Do they not comprehend the language the most of us speak? I heard the original show and some of the replays and there is little doubt in my mind what was said and implied. Harry Reid and company are embarassing the United States Senate. I agree…Hate speech laws are first cousin to McCain-Feingold. It’s the Liberals attempt to amend the Constitution without the ratification of the people. It’s OK for Congressman and Senators to call our troops murderers, but it’s not OK to hang a rope from a tree. I don’t like that, of course, but we’re either going to have free speech or we’re not. We can’t selectively decide when we’re going to honor it. Hate speech laws are amongst the worse and the ACLU remains silent. Of course, based upon their agenda, they selectively champion a cause to suit their agenda.

Yes it is, but one has to ask why Harkin would be such a fool to try to criticize Limbaugh for the “phony soldiers” nonsense when Harkin himself is a classic example of the kind of disonesty that Limbaugh was referring to.
I suspect the answer is that to the left (read, “Democrats”) it’s become all about “The Narrative” — repeating the same accusations over and over again in an attempt to bootstrap them into “common knowledge,” and thence into “established fact.”

Rush has referred to Harkin as “dung heap Harkin” for years. The “dung heap” goes back to Harkin referring to the charges against rapist Bill Clinton as “a heap of dung”. Rush captured it in nickname form for the ages.

As I recall, President Bush flew fighters for the Texas Air National Guard… and given the length of time it takes to train a fighter pilot, it wouldn’t surprise me if he had more active-duty time under his belt than “war hero” John Kerry.

Harkin’s problem wasn’t that others were “misreporting” his service a la Mary Mapes and Dan Rather. It was that he was lying about its particulars. Harkin got into hot water when the truth came out, not the other way around.
Just went on a tour of all the left of center blogs and they are still buying into the debunked idea that Rush was criticizing the troops.
They are running lock step with Reid and the Media Matters spin despite all the evidence that tears down their little talking points.

btw-murtha didn’t serve 37 years on active duty with the Marine Corps, just 37 years that is a combination of active and reserve time combined (rebuttal to sen. reid’s senate comment)

Harkin has been trying to introduce amendments for years to get Rush and Hannity pulled from the AFRTS but somehow he had no objections about Air America being on the program list.

When I look at most of the left of center blogs staying in line with the Media Matters game plan it brings to question the reading comprehension of those blogs and also shows their fact checking is on scale with that of TNR.
Since there are so many in lockstep and avoiding the truth of the matter, they are walking out on a limb that is getting thinner by the hour.

I heard the original Rush program. It was about one person, Jesse MacBeth, who was recently convicted to a five month sentence for lying about his non-service as a ranger and purple heart. He made it about 44 days in basic training, then lied about things in Iraq where he never went. The liberals believed every word he spoke or knew that he was lying, just like Al Sharpton knew that Tawana Brawley was a liar.

Actually, I don’t think so. The MoveOn.org ad hit a disapproval rating of 58% with 42% strongly disapproving. Only 23% of Americans approve of that ad. This was a major backlash. Just as there will be a major backlash once people become aware that HARKEN, the man who attacked Limbaugh yesterday is, himself, a PHONY SOLDIER.
People are not going to stop listening to Rush Limbaugh over this. In fact, I suspect his ratings (and ad rates) will rise. Ditto for the other conservative radio talk show hosts. I heard Levin tonight say that he is going to go to Nevada and work against Reid’s reelection when he runs again.
Harkin is now exposed as a phony, and this is something that the media cannot “gatekeep” or “goal tend” from the public. If Fox News doesn’t break the story, then Michelle’s web site (one of the fastest growing and most read sites on the ‘net) ALREADY HAS.
Soros screwed the pooch when his MoveOn.org libeled Petraeus. He screwed the pooch when Media Matters deliberately misquoted Limbaugh. Macranger says that he and others are planing to file complaints against Media Matters for violating 501(c)(3), on the basis of Mark Levin’s comments that Media Matters is Criminal Enterprise and their clear violation of the tax code.
Limbaugh’s apologoy to the troops on behalf of Media Matters was a master stroke.
Only time will tell, but I think that the MoveOn.org Democrats screwed up royally.

Listening to harkin’s remarks that Rush Limbaugh is not permitted to critize the military becaue he never served speaks of hypocracy and reminds me of madam pelosi’s comments to Madam Condolezza Rice about the war because Miss Rice isn’t a mother and can’t understand the nature of maternal sacrifice in sending a child off to the military.

If the United States military is so disgraceful why then would Kerry, Murtha, Harkin and the like then use their stint in the military to bolster their image…perhaps because it gives them an air of credibility?
This is going to get uglier and stay that way for awhile. I saw this morning that Media Matters is now claiming that Rush has edited and spliced tape of his broadcast to support his (rightful) claim that he was talking about Jessie MacBeth.
Media Matters, the MoveOn crowd, Soros and most of all the Hildebeast realized they were stepping in it yet again and are now prepared to start telling one and all, who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes (ears)?
These people are lower than low. And if we aren’t careful we’re going to have them in complete control of the American political process and American government in about a year and a half.
It troubled me to read that the evangelical right is considering throwing their weight behind a third party candidate if they don’t get an anti-abortion candidate. Speaking for myself - as a Christian - I would beseech any on this site who are thinking this way to re-consider your stance. The events of the past few days simply hammer home the fact that we are faced with other far more pressing issues.
After all, it’s not going to do any good to try to advocate for your cause if it becomes a crime to speak about it. Don’t think it can happen? Then what in the world do you think is going on right now with this assault on Rush?
