Code Pink defaces Berkeley military recruitment office; Update: Attacks will continue, support needed
Update: I noted below that it would be nice if folks could show up and show some support for the targeted recruitment office. Reader Sandy e-mails:
I called the USMC Officer Recruiting Office at Berkeley and expressed my support to one of the recruiters. H asked how I knew about the situation, and I told him your blog was my source. He said the Pinkos vowed they would be back on the weekends and during the week, every week, until the office is shut down. They went to the landlord of the building and have been harassing him, and he may complain to the city/mayor about it, as other building tenants do not appreciate their antics since it interferes with their businesses. The recruiter hoped that more support would come in and that the word would be spread. He said earlier this week, some Gold Star and Blue Star family members came to the office to show support. One of the family members was a father whose Marine son had died in Fallujah. A man with the Pinkos said to him, “How does it feel to have your son die for oil?” Tensions, of course, were very high and there was almost a fight. I know that I could not hold my temper (and tongue) as these Marines are doing. I despise what these harridans are doing. Question their patriotism? There’s no question about their patriotism.

Like the MoveOn.org Democrats, the Code Pinkos are doing all they can to squelch free speech. Via STACLU from the Berkeley Planet:
“If there are to be no wars, there can be no warriors,” said Dianne Budd, one of the organizers.
“We found out a few days ago and decided to make their lives miserable,” she said, pinning up “RECRUITERS LIE, CHILDREN DIE” posters on the office windows. “We want people to know that it’s here and we want to shut them down. If people had been in there we were ready to hand out information about GI rights. We just want to speak the truth.”
They can’t handle the truth.
The brave recruiter, Capt. Richard Lund, who has to put up with this unhinged abuse, wrote an open letter to Berkeley:
While the protest that you staged in front of my office on Wednesday, Sept. 26th, was an exercise of your constitutional rights, the messages that you left behind were insulting, untrue, and ultimately misdirected. Additionally, from the comments quoted in the Berkeley Daily Planet article, it is clear that you have no idea what it is that I do here. Given that I was unaware of your planned protest, I was unable to contest your claims in person, so I will therefore address them here.
First, a little bit about who I am: I am a Marine captain with over eight years of service as a commissioned officer. I flew transport helicopters for most of my time in the Marine Corps before requesting orders to come here. Currently, I am the officer selection officer for the northern Bay Area. My job is to recruit, interview, screen, and evaluate college students and college graduates that show an interest in becoming officers in the Marine Corps. Once they’ve committed to pursuing this program, I help them apply, and if selected, I help them prepare for the rigors of Officer Candidate School and for the challenges of life as a Marine officer. To be eligible for my programs, you have to be either a full-time college student or a college graduate. I don’t pull anyone out of school, and high school students are not eligible.
I moved my office to Berkeley in December of last year. Previously, it was located in an old federal building in Alameda. That building was due to be torn down and I had to find a new location. I choose our new site because of its proximity to UC Berkeley and to the BART station. Most of the candidates in my program either go to Cal or to one of the schools in San Francisco, the East Bay, or the North Bay. Logistically, the Shattuck Square location was the most convenient for them.
Next, you claim that I lie. I have never, and will never, lie to any individual that shows an interest in my programs. I am upfront with everything that is involved at every step of the way and I go out of my way to ensure that they know what to expect when they apply. I tell them that this is not an easy path. I tell them that leading Marines requires a great deal of self-sacrifice. I tell them that, should they succeed in their quest to become a Marine officer, they will almost certainly go to Iraq. In the future, if you plan to attack my integrity, please have the courtesy to explain to me specifically the instances in which you think that I lied.
Next, scrawled across the doorway to my office, you wrote, “Recruiters are Traitors.” Please explain this one. How exactly am I a traitor? Was I a traitor when I joined the Marine Corps all those years ago? Is every Marine, therefore, a traitor? Was I a traitor during my two stints in Iraq? Was I a traitor when I was delivering humanitarian aid to the victims of the tsunami in Sumatra? Or do you only consider me a traitor while I am on this job? The fact is, recruitment is and always has been a part of maintaining any military organization. In fact, recruitment is a necessity of any large organization. Large corporations have employees that recruit full-time. Even you, I’m sure, must expend some effort to recruit for Code Pink. So what, exactly, is it that makes me a traitor?
The fact is this: any independent nation must maintain a military (or be allied with those who do) to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. Regardless of what your opinions are of the current administration or the current conflict in Iraq, the U.S. military will be needed again in the future. If your counter-recruitment efforts are ultimately successful, who will defend us if we are directly attacked again as we were at Pearl Harbor? Who would respond if a future terrorist attack targets the Golden Gate Bridge, the BART system, or the UC Berkeley clock tower? And, to address the most hypocritical stance that your organization takes on its website, where would the peace keeping force come from that you advocate sending to Darfur?
It would be nice if folks in the Bay Area could show up and counter-protest the Code Pinkos and show Capt. Lund some support. As they say: Eagles Up!

These people make me sick. It’s so obvious to the rest of us that they hate the military, but yet the pinkos say that they support it. Great way to show support.

Idiots-yes they say they support the military that’s why they do this type of thing, bother those at Walter Reed, and act like fools at Congressional Hearings. I cannot stand these women, they’re disgusting, they’ve taken a wonderful color and made me almost hate it now, they stink. They do hate the military and I am sure they hate themselves. Something happened to these women at some point in their lives. Maybe they couldn’t get dates with men in the Military because they sure show a hatred like a woman scorned for those who serve.
Their issue is with the policy makers in Washington and they claim to support the troops, but who do they attack?
Does anyone know if they (Code Pink) can be sued for this?

As a former US Marine Sergeant, I am appalled at the antics of these clowns. I wrote a few weeks ago: Let me state clearly and for the record: I question their patriotism!
Perhaps its time to remove all military presence from that section of the Planet California. If they need defense from terrorists (who are bent on killing them, too, by the way), they can ask Cuba or the UN.
The Bay Area seems have become a modern day Sodom & Gomorrah. I vote we get the last few decent people out of there and kick that whole region out of the Union.

This reminds me of a prank from my high school days. The rival school in the area spray painted their school’s name above ours on the the front of our main building, but they spelled the name of their school(which is also the name of our county) wrong! I could not stop laughing the whole day.

My first thought was the cops in Berkeley? But I know there are many policemen in Berkeley that honestly try to do the job, regardless of the Moonbats and loonies in that city and the surrounding area.

I don’t think patriotism is taught in schools anymore…if we want to take back our country we need to first take back our schools starting from preschool going all the way up to the University level! It is not something that is taught at home anymore unless you homeschool your children or you make a consistent effort to combat and correct the liberal garbage that passes for education in our school systems these days.
He’s a Naval Officer and Marine. NOT a Soldier. It’s honorable to serve in our nations Army, However, were not soldiers. Defending Government property is part of our duty as Marines. My American Legion Honor Guard gets to kick things off with a flag raising ceremony, I haven’t been able to participate in a few years, but as fas as I know they still do it. 5. Your token weird guy coming off a bender from the night before, sitting outside of the Asian art store in a meditation pose and staring at an Indonesian god-type statue trying to absorb its wisdom for a a good two hours without blinking.

It’s too bad Congress can’t enact a law that makes it illegal to hold a “protest” like this at a military recruitment office. If Cpt. Lund were performing abortions on the side, in between interviewing college kids, all the powers of the federal government would be mobilized to hunt down the Code Pinkos and convict them of sundry felonies. Hmmm, maybe he can then convert a corner of the office/clinic to an Islamic prayer room… if they were protesting outside a mosque, Teddy Kennedy’s new “our military is made up of hate criminals” legislation would kick in too. From there it’s a short hop to creating the day laborer center out front and then the USMC recruitment office would be Constitutionally impervious to free speech.

Are there no laws of any kind in San Fran? No public decency? No vandalism? If code pink has admitted the vandalism & has vowed to do it again, can’t anyone do anything to stop them? Short story for you:
My father, a Corporal in the 5th Marine Division, Headquarters Battalion, was part of the invasion force on Iwo Jima and then the occupying force on the Japanese Islands.
While occupying the Japanese homeland - keep in mind, this is very shortly AFTER we used the 2 atomic bombs on their people - my father and his fellow Marines did their duties and befriended many Japanese locals.
Many did not see them as occupiers in the sense that they were the enemy.
In fact - my father and one Japanese man he befriended wrote to each other for 30 years beyond the end of the war.
Did this Japanese man write to an ‘occupier’ - no, he wrote to an honorable soldier - a United States Marine - who did his duty and performed honorably and befriended one of his enemy’s countrymen.
Marines and Soldiers, 99.995% of the time are just that, honorable and duty-bound.
These anti-military displays are completely revolting and I have no respect whatsoever for these protesters.
The amazing part is - I don’t think my father’s Japanese pen-pal would either.
I can only hold my breath waiting for our leadership to address the definition of “aid and comfort” to our enemies.
Apparently, the framers meant “material support,” and had no way of even contemplating the type of anti-American speech we see today. I would like to see Code Pink, certain un-named members of congress, MoveOn, et al, explain how their rantings about the “evils” committed by our government/military is NOT aid (recruiting propaganda), or comfort (again, propaganda) to our enemies (yes, foreign AND domestic.)

Anyone, in California anyway, can affect a citizen’s arrest for misdemeanor acts committed in their presence. The military does need volunteers for live fire urban terrorist exercises. It makes it more realistic.

Berkeley, CA: Angry protesters created a ruckus when an office of the United States Marine Corps opened and began recruiting this country’s finest young men and women for service as Officers in the over 2-century old institution of pride and honor.
Across the bay, scores of people paraded around 1/2 naked, whipping and spanking each other, dressed in leather, eating dog food, masturbating and doing so in front of families and children. ( while drinking Miller beer )
No protests were noted.
It’d be nice if they’d try to close down some other government offices, such as:
-The ‘90% of us are too lazy to get a job’ Welfare Office.
-The ‘I had too many kids from too many men and need a nice new house’ HUD housing office.
-The ‘I’m sorry I don’t have any I.D. and can’t speak English, but want a driver’s license anyway’ DMV office.

-The Local IRS office. (I’d like to see some of these whacko’s get audited. I’m sure they’re getting money from Soros one way or another.)

These code stink crones make my stomach turn. Their ham-handed attempts to boot the recruiters and kill free speech, likens them more to terrorists than free citizens respecting other’s rights to do what they believe in.
Well, it’s not easy, but we get by. I can’t talk for my fellow Californians, but I personally like to go fishing and camping in the Tahoe Forest, go fishing and camping at the ocean, read, watch movies either at home or the theatre, but mostly and more importantly, I spend as much time as humanly possible with my three daughters and my wife. We do a great many family things, and we spend a great deal of time showing them though words and deeds the proper way to act and the proper way to address and treat their fellow man. We are both (the wife and I) not proponents of the “It takes a villiage” crowd, nor do we feel it is anyone else’s responsibility to raise our children save for us and to a lesser extent their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. It takes a FAMILY, one that is close and believes in each other. The end result is that we are raising three very talented, well adjusted, intelligent girls and turning them into strong and independant women who do not believe in relying on anyone but themselves.
It is a source of pride when I hear my 9 year old comment on why certain people don’t “go to college and get jobs”, or talk about how wrong people who protest the military are. They look forward to all the holidays, decorate for all of them, and especially on the 4th of July when they line our yard with flags.
So you see, out here in Hippiestan, there are those of us in the Resistance movement that are functioning and raising children to understand the causes and reasons we are at war, to respect the military, to become true members of the greatest country in the world and to be proud of being American…Not XXXX-american, but AMERICAN.

Do people realize that most Marines join this branch with the express knowledge that death is a HUGE option? I really think they are degrading these brave men and women who are joining up. These so called “enlighted” Califormians think they know what is good for everyone. BTW: My brother is preparing for his 5th (6th?) tour to Iraq. He’s been doing this for over 20 years. There is a wide chasm between what they are doing and “dissent”. Questioning is one thing. Actively working for the downfall of your country and the defeat of the military and country to an enemy in a time of war…or anytime actually…is treasonous, traitorous and seditious, and it is time we as a party and as Conservatives and as a nation, stop this non-sense of molly-coddling these low-lifes and confront them on what they do.

In fact, they question that patriotism of these recruiters by accusing them as Code Pink does, of tricking people into joining the military rather than the recruiters doing what they do out of love of country.

An article in one of the local weekly porno rags here (SFGATE)said there is a protest scheduled each wednesday from now til the office is closed. That’s the day that the Grannies for Peace (or whatever they are calling themselves) and Code Blink are planning to “tell the truth”.
I am planning to be there with my own signs. For the 4 hours that i am there I will be maintaining a self-imposed gag order, complete with duct tape.
My sign will be two-sided: one side with the “I will not submit” message- the other “The Left- Part of the Axis of Evil.”
I will have other placards to hold up that will speak for me. I will not engage these punks verbally.
We’ll see what happens.

If in 1864 Atlanta would regret his attention, in early 1865 Sherman’s troops laid it on more severely at Charleston and Columbia (a refuge for Charlestonians), due to the well-deserved reputation of the people there as noted above. The U.S. Civil War began with the flagrant disrespect of the Charleston populace for the Federal property of Fort Sumter.

Alright Rick, I’ll bite. I am a liberal, oppose the war and think that the protests over at the recruitment office are stupid and misdirected.
There have been in the past, isolated reported instances of inappropriate recruiting techniques, sure. But I don’t recall it being widespread enough to warrant smearing this Marine or any recruiter, for that matter, absent specific proof. I like that we have an all-volunteer army and I like that it provides a good opportunity for millions of Americans to serve their country and better themselves and their families, as it has for my brother-in-law, sister and nieces.
For the record I also find the Bay Area’s behavior toward the military in general lately baffling. I thought gays LIKED men in uniform.

A great killing field seems imminent to me.
Had a dream last nite. (Bear with me now.)
I was standing in a clearing of rolling green grass, a commons shared by six dwellings with their backdoor and decks facing the commons.
A small black bear was laying down next to one of the decks. I approached carefully. The bear was sleeping. As I stood and watched the careful breathing along its belly and ribs, a man came loudly out of the sliding door above the sleeping bear. “Hi There! Looks like we found ourselves a bear!” I was at a loss for words. He not only stunned me with his loud voice. He seemed sarcastically arrogant.
“Well, let me show you what we do with bears around here.” And with that he picked up the bear and raised it by the pit of its arms. Then he forcefully pushed the bear’s back into a long thick spike extending from the ground floor wall of the building. The bear opened its eyes for a moment in alarm, and then went limp.
The man picked up a short pry bar and inserted it cross wise, gruffly, in the bears gaping mouth. With a jerk he forced the bear’s two top incisors out. But as they hit the ground, i was shocked to see they were deeply rooted- the base of each tooth looked round like a stalk of sugar cane, but hard like elephant tusk.
The man picked them up and tossed them over to me but they sailed high above me, landing about 10 yards away. “There! I guess you’ll have to figure out how to get em now.” And he nodded up to a rise. I turned and saw two giant bears.
The small bear’s teeth were between me and the bears on the rise. They had blood on them. The bears were watching me. I sidestepped out of the line of sight. Slowly. Not wanting to attract their attention. I knew they could smell the blood. I knew it was their offspring.
The bears began to gallop like horses, not like bears. They were running toward the teeth. I was about 10 yards to the side. When they reached the teeth, one snorted and snuffled, the other stood on its hind legs and roared.
They took off running toward the Man at the house. I watched as they tore him apart. They ate him. The small bear was gone. The bears turned into men. The men walked to the side of the house and removed a blue tarp from a large stack of lumber. I watched them as they built a house.

I woke up on my elbows in my bed, my pillow folded end to end into a cylinder, upright in my grip. My forehead was pressed into it.
