Code Pink defaces Berkeley military recruitment office; Update: Attacks will continue, support needed

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 5, 2007 10:03 AM

Update: I noted below that it would be nice if folks could show up and show some support for the targeted recruitment office. Reader Sandy e-mails:

I called the USMC Officer Recruiting Office at Berkeley and expressed my support to one of the recruiters. H asked how I knew about the situation, and I told him your blog was my source. He said the Pinkos vowed they would be back on the weekends and during the week, every week, until the office is shut down. They went to the landlord of the building and have been harassing him, and he may complain to the city/mayor about it, as other building tenants do not appreciate their antics since it interferes with their businesses. The recruiter hoped that more support would come in and that the word would be spread. He said earlier this week, some Gold Star and Blue Star family members came to the office to show support. One of the family members was a father whose Marine son had died in Fallujah. A man with the Pinkos said to him, “How does it feel to have your son die for oil?” Tensions, of course, were very high and there was almost a fight. I know that I could not hold my temper (and tongue) as these Marines are doing. I despise what these harridans are doing. Question their patriotism? There’s no question about their patriotism.

Your daily dose of Bay Area troop hatred is brought to you this morning by Code Pink in Berkeley (via CBS 5; hat tip: Jim Hoft):

codepinkass.jpg

The least they could do is spellcheck their slander.

***

Like the MoveOn.org Democrats, the Code Pinkos are doing all they can to squelch free speech. Via STACLU from the Berkeley Planet:

“If there are to be no wars, there can be no warriors,” said Dianne Budd, one of the organizers.

“We found out a few days ago and decided to make their lives miserable,” she said, pinning up “RECRUITERS LIE, CHILDREN DIE” posters on the office windows. “We want people to know that it’s here and we want to shut them down. If people had been in there we were ready to hand out information about GI rights. We just want to speak the truth.”

They can’t handle the truth.

The brave recruiter, Capt. Richard Lund, who has to put up with this unhinged abuse, wrote an open letter to Berkeley:

While the protest that you staged in front of my office on Wednesday, Sept. 26th, was an exercise of your constitutional rights, the messages that you left behind were insulting, untrue, and ultimately misdirected. Additionally, from the comments quoted in the Berkeley Daily Planet article, it is clear that you have no idea what it is that I do here. Given that I was unaware of your planned protest, I was unable to contest your claims in person, so I will therefore address them here.

First, a little bit about who I am: I am a Marine captain with over eight years of service as a commissioned officer. I flew transport helicopters for most of my time in the Marine Corps before requesting orders to come here. Currently, I am the officer selection officer for the northern Bay Area. My job is to recruit, interview, screen, and evaluate college students and college graduates that show an interest in becoming officers in the Marine Corps. Once they’ve committed to pursuing this program, I help them apply, and if selected, I help them prepare for the rigors of Officer Candidate School and for the challenges of life as a Marine officer. To be eligible for my programs, you have to be either a full-time college student or a college graduate. I don’t pull anyone out of school, and high school students are not eligible.

I moved my office to Berkeley in December of last year. Previously, it was located in an old federal building in Alameda. That building was due to be torn down and I had to find a new location. I choose our new site because of its proximity to UC Berkeley and to the BART station. Most of the candidates in my program either go to Cal or to one of the schools in San Francisco, the East Bay, or the North Bay. Logistically, the Shattuck Square location was the most convenient for them.

Next, you claim that I lie. I have never, and will never, lie to any individual that shows an interest in my programs. I am upfront with everything that is involved at every step of the way and I go out of my way to ensure that they know what to expect when they apply. I tell them that this is not an easy path. I tell them that leading Marines requires a great deal of self-sacrifice. I tell them that, should they succeed in their quest to become a Marine officer, they will almost certainly go to Iraq. In the future, if you plan to attack my integrity, please have the courtesy to explain to me specifically the instances in which you think that I lied.

Next, scrawled across the doorway to my office, you wrote, “Recruiters are Traitors.” Please explain this one. How exactly am I a traitor? Was I a traitor when I joined the Marine Corps all those years ago? Is every Marine, therefore, a traitor? Was I a traitor during my two stints in Iraq? Was I a traitor when I was delivering humanitarian aid to the victims of the tsunami in Sumatra? Or do you only consider me a traitor while I am on this job? The fact is, recruitment is and always has been a part of maintaining any military organization. In fact, recruitment is a necessity of any large organization. Large corporations have employees that recruit full-time. Even you, I’m sure, must expend some effort to recruit for Code Pink. So what, exactly, is it that makes me a traitor?

The fact is this: any independent nation must maintain a military (or be allied with those who do) to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. Regardless of what your opinions are of the current administration or the current conflict in Iraq, the U.S. military will be needed again in the future. If your counter-recruitment efforts are ultimately successful, who will defend us if we are directly attacked again as we were at Pearl Harbor? Who would respond if a future terrorist attack targets the Golden Gate Bridge, the BART system, or the UC Berkeley clock tower? And, to address the most hypocritical stance that your organization takes on its website, where would the peace keeping force come from that you advocate sending to Darfur?

It would be nice if folks in the Bay Area could show up and counter-protest the Code Pinkos and show Capt. Lund some support. As they say: Eagles Up!

Do people realize that most Marines join this branch with the express knowledge that death is a HUGE option? I really think they are degrading these brave men and women who are joining up. I do not question their patriotism in any way shape or form.

It is totally impossible to question something…a belief or otherwise…that does not exist.

They have not patriotic beliefs, and never have. Their misguided attempt at trying to bully people into believing that they are patriotic, and threatening anyone who doubts it only works because people are too afraid to come out and say it. they have buffaloed everyone with this “Political Correct” nonsense for so long that people are actually afraid something will happen to them if they just come right out and tell them that their actions and statements have absolutely NOTHING to do with being a patriot, and are actually seditious and treasonous in nature and definition of the word.

I have never and will never agree that telling lies about your country, burning your country’s flag, spitting on and telling lies about and harrassing etc. the members of the military and telling lies about and demeaning the President of the US is in any way, shape or form Patiotic.

There is a wide chasm between what they are doing and “dissent”. Questioning is one thing. Actively working for the downfall of your country and the defeat of the military and country to an enemy in a time of war…or anytime actually…is treasonous, traitorous and seditious, and it is time we as a party and as Conservatives and as a nation, stop this non-sense of molly-coddling these low-lifes and confront them on what they do.

If the Republicans have any hope of winning the election, that is exactly what they need to do. the country is starved for the people running for President to do just that. To do otherwise and to continue to make excuses for the Left is doing a great disservice.

Sorry, went on a rant there. I’ll try to do better.

Not one liberal that I know of has ever come to the defense of military recruiters when this kind of thing happens. In fact, they question that patriotism of these recruiters by accusing them as Code Pink does, of tricking people into joining the military rather than the recruiters doing what they do out of love of country.

Time to question their sanity as well as their loyalty.

Remember Bunkies, Berkeley is a city where, after 9-11, when all Fire Departments were going nuts trying to get flags to put on all our rigs, they were told to remove all the American flags off of their apparatus because it was seen as a provocation and the City did not want to insult or provoke any Muslims with delecate sensibilities.

Not kidding, they had to and that was the reason why. 343 of their brothers were slaughtered and they were forbidden by the Berkeley Politburo to show their colors and support.

An article in one of the local weekly porno rags here (SFGATE)said there is a protest scheduled each wednesday from now til the office is closed. That’s the day that the Grannies for Peace (or whatever they are calling themselves) and Code Blink are planning to “tell the truth”.

I am planning to be there with my own signs. For the 4 hours that i am there I will be maintaining a self-imposed gag order, complete with duct tape.

My sign will be two-sided: one side with the “I will not submit” message- the other “The Left- Part of the Axis of Evil.”

I will have other placards to hold up that will speak for me. I will not engage these punks verbally.

    We’ll see what happens.

Side note: If you haven’t read Norman Podhoretz’ World War 4 yet, then you must do so soon. It is a perfect compliment to Steyn’s “America Alone” as far as cutting underneath all the media Psy-ops about the war.

Next on my list is Ledeen’s “The Iranian Time Bomb”, Peters’ “Wars of Blood and Faith”, and Babbin’s “In the Words of our Enemies”.

Arming myself with perspectives that give me stealth information to use against the Left and their quisling Liberal Moon Loons in Congress.

The media psy-ops are deafening the American people against our own interests of peace and security. WW4 by Podhoretz is the clearest articulation of the strength of the Bush Doctrine- and what a major point of departure from the docile path of every president re Arabs since Harry Truman.

Biggest insight- the brilliance of Arab propagandists which turned Israel from the David that won the 6 day war into a Goliath that is “bullying” so-called Palestinians. And the American Left- especially the Left here in Berkeley and other college towns- have SWALLOWED hook line and sinker.

I highly recommend this read. We need to pressure Congress with deeply articulate reasons for staying at this Long War. Period. Slogans and gotcha politics is something we on the Right must avoid at all costs, because it is a fools game.

Let’s work Congress over with the real deal. They cannot deflect it or sound bite it away. And our Presidential Candidates need to be saturated with our deeper perspectives so their campaigns can get out of the ruts they are in about the war.

Break the Left’s hold on the media with questions they have not answers for.

Podhoretz has inspired me to take this campaign to Lee, Boxer, and Feinstein.

And the Berkeley Daily Planet is about to get a history lesson. Stay tuned.

    More mush please. 8)

Friday Greetings Mrs. Malkin and loyal community. Aching regret to bear with the constant drumbeat of misdeeds in the San Francisco Bay area. At one time the city itself had a special magic of none other in the USA, where one might indeed have left his heart. As it is now, I can only think of today’s San Francisco in the same vein as antebellum Charleston, South Carolina. As in the Bay area today, Charleston in the decades just before the U.S. Civil War was a hothouse of virulently antinational tendencies. A young Army Lieutenant, William Tecumseh Sherman, while doing a tour of duty in the city took his measure of the opinion leaders there, and would apply it later with historic effect. If in 1864 Atlanta would regret his attention, in early 1865 Sherman’s troops laid it on more severely at Charleston and Columbia (a refuge for Charlestonians), due to the well-deserved reputation of the people there as noted above. The U.S. Civil War began with the flagrant disrespect of the Charleston populace for the Federal property of Fort Sumter.

If the shelling of Fort Sumter begat a great tragedy, should the vandalism of the recruiting station be seen as farce?

There have been in the past, isolated reported instances of inappropriate recruiting techniques, sure. But I don’t recall it being widespread enough to warrant smearing this Marine or any recruiter, for that matter, absent specific proof. I like that we have an all-volunteer army and I like that it provides a good opportunity for millions of Americans to serve their country and better themselves and their families, as it has for my brother-in-law, sister and nieces.

For the record I also find the Bay Area’s behavior toward the military in general lately baffling. I thought gays LIKED men in uniform.

I just got the chills from what you wrote. For some reason, all of this buildup seems familiar to me.

So many parallels. So much derision manifesting as divisiveness. Thanks for your perspective.

    ***

Anyone who has visited any of the battlefields out east might have had a sense of the vague familiarity or vibe all of this has. It’s there at Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Chancellorsville, Antietam, Manassas, Spotsylvania….

A great killing field seems imminent to me.

Had a dream last nite. (Bear with me now.)

I was standing in a clearing of rolling green grass, a commons shared by six dwellings with their backdoor and decks facing the commons.

A small black bear was laying down next to one of the decks. I approached carefully. The bear was sleeping. As I stood and watched the careful breathing along its belly and ribs, a man came loudly out of the sliding door above the sleeping bear. “Hi There! Looks like we found ourselves a bear!” I was at a loss for words. He not only stunned me with his loud voice. He seemed sarcastically arrogant.

“Well, let me show you what we do with bears around here.” And with that he picked up the bear and raised it by the pit of its arms. Then he forcefully pushed the bear’s back into a long thick spike extending from the ground floor wall of the building. The bear opened its eyes for a moment in alarm, and then went limp.

The man picked up a short pry bar and inserted it cross wise, gruffly, in the bears gaping mouth. With a jerk he forced the bear’s two top incisors out. But as they hit the ground, i was shocked to see they were deeply rooted- the base of each tooth looked round like a stalk of sugar cane, but hard like elephant tusk.

The man picked them up and tossed them over to me but they sailed high above me, landing about 10 yards away. “There! I guess you’ll have to figure out how to get em now.” And he nodded up to a rise. I turned and saw two giant bears.

The small bear’s teeth were between me and the bears on the rise. They had blood on them. The bears were watching me. I sidestepped out of the line of sight. Slowly. Not wanting to attract their attention. I knew they could smell the blood. I knew it was their offspring.

The bears began to gallop like horses, not like bears. They were running toward the teeth. I was about 10 yards to the side. When they reached the teeth, one snorted and snuffled, the other stood on its hind legs and roared.

They took off running toward the Man at the house. I watched as they tore him apart. They ate him. The small bear was gone. The bears turned into men. The men walked to the side of the house and removed a blue tarp from a large stack of lumber. I watched them as they built a house.
    **

I woke up on my elbows in my bed, my pillow folded end to end into a cylinder, upright in my grip. My forehead was pressed into it.

    There are so many signs.

The President of the United States (at his best in 2002)

““I’ve said in the past that nations are either with us or against us in the war on terror. To be counted on the side of peace, nations must act. Every leader actually committed to peace will end incitement to violence in official media and publicly denounce homicide bombs. Every nation actually committed to peace must stop the flow of money, equipment and recruits to terrorist groups seeking the destruction of Israel, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah. Every nation committed to peace must block the shipment of Iranian supplies to these groups and oppose regimes that promote terror, like Iraq. And Syria must choose the right side in the war on terror by closing terrorist camps and expelling terrorist organizations.”

Now how does Code Blink and Grannies for Peace, respond to that? By saying that these enemies of ours should be allowed to recruit on our main streets.

How much dope does one have to smoke to reach that level of neurosis?

America is an enlightened nation in at least one sense- a volunteer military with a core of “warrior class” men and women at its center. The Rangers, SEALS, combat fighter pilots, logisticians, etc. that I have had the good fortune to meet or get to know over the last 30 years of public life have always been the best of us in all of us. It’s uncanny.

My two sons are warriors. Their training saved them from the uselessness that infects many of the lives of our young boys in this country at an early age.

Here in Berkeley, it appears that it is against the religion of secular, “earth religion”, lefties to allow a young boy to eat protein and build muscle. Everything is about eating pasta and bread and carbohydrates- so their blood sugar is out of control and then they need to be medicated so they can sit in a chair at school.

We are losing our young boys to this Left Loon mantra of raising boys like girls under the aegis of “equality” and “anti-sexism”.

    It is a shame.

A warrior is always civil, in control of him/herself, and completely capable of comprehending the position of adversaries, enemies, and foes as well as their own- if not better. The Left is vulnerable in this way because they are way out of touch with how the world turns.

Time after time in our history, in the face of great danger, Democrats and Republicans worked together to ensure that freedom would not falter. But not today.

Motivated more by partisan politics than by national security, today’s Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator.

And nothing makes this Marine madder than someone calling American troops occupiers rather than liberators.

Tell that to the one-half of Europe that was freed because Franklin Roosevelt led an army of liberators, not occupiers.

Tell that to the lower half of the Korean Peninsula that is free because Dwight Eisenhower commanded an army of liberators, not occupiers.

Tell that to the half a billion men, women and children who are free today from the Baltics to the Crimea, from Poland to Siberia, because Ronald Reagan rebuilt a military of liberators, not occupiers.

Never in the history of the world has any soldier sacrificed more for the freedom and liberty of total strangers than the American soldier. And, our soldiers don’t just give freedom abroad, they preserve it for us here at home.

For it has been said so truthfully that it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest.

It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives that protester the freedom to abuse and burn that flag. –Zell Miller

You are so correct in this.

These moonbats have no idea what a true ‘Warrior’ is. All they envision is their pathetic daydreams of wanton murder and blood-thirsty organized killing-machines.

True Warriors, like so many of our Military, are controlled, educated and honorable. They seek only to serve each day, asking for no greater compensation than to be able to serve tomorrow.

You can tell a true Warrior by his eyes. They are not wild - they are deep and thoughtful. But they are not the eyes you want to see when you are their enemy.

affirmative. No recognition or understanding of warriorhood. And the pathetic behaviors that the Moon Loons call “warrior”- it’s nauseating.

In Berkeley, the Moon Loons are prone to crying and raging emotionalism when speaking out in public at meetings.

Their “activism” is an addiction behavior they use to deal with a lot of unresolved “issues” they have.

I don’t say this in judgement of them. I have unresolved issues too. But I don’t drag them into the public the way i see and hear them do it here.

It is their political currency in this community. “How Berkeley Can You Be?” is a parade that they held for themselves last week. One dude showed up in a costume that was one of those prescription med bottles. It was telling.

I think they should rename their pity party as “How Much Do I Suffer Under A Free Capitalist Regime”?

What is spooky to me about this “identifying with the downtrodden” chic out here is the way that non-Arab women are making their political fashion statement with some of those “Palestinian” speckled bandannas the terrorists wear.

So downtrodden with their rent-controlled gentrified apartment and trust fund supported, non-profit career path doing good work.

But all the while, at a moment’s notice, be able to turn on the teardrops over being abused as a child, or this or whatever they use to “identify with the oppressed.” It is a cottage industry here in BerserkoLoand….and it is exported all around the country.

I’ll try and keep the trolls out or at the very least, remove them when found to be ‘inside the wire’.

We’ll try it for a while and see if it works.

The Moon Loons don’t believe it can happen to “our” city. UC is a high value target and very vulnerable. Plus, they too have a very active “Palestinian” enclave on campus calling for Jihad.

I’m not advocating criminal acts, but there are a number of things Bay Area people could do.

    - Organize counter protests.
    - Get volunteers to take shifts with cameras at the recruiting center.
    - Protest at Code Pink facilities and DON’T be polite. Make noise. Let them get a taste of some blowback.

Those of us who love this country and who admire and respect our military MUST show that we are as willing to fight for THEM as they are for us. Do it.
