There’s an ambiguous but thought provoking sentence in the Opinion section of the NH Sunday News today(Matthew Yglesias)that says “President Bush…is busying himself raising half a billion dollars for his post-presidency, with, no doubt, much of that coming from individuals interested in influencing public policy.” The article is on loopholes in the law that allow sitting presidents to do this without having to disclose. Makes ya’ wonder who’s contributing!!!

This week there was a meeting in Tenn. of people interested in succession. It included not only Southern conservatives but Yankees from Vermont. Their point was that our government has so lost its way and has become completely unresponsive to the average American. Our constitution is only a piece of paper and we no longer have a voice with our votes. This issue with immigration is only one example. I am wondering if a major change in our government is the only way to restore our freedom. Succession is moving out of the concept of seeming to be crazy to the only viable alternative to change our lives.

#53. That is my point really. Maybe when we start handing out buckets of money to these third world countries, we should have some accounting as to where this money is going. Heck there are some people who won’t give a homeless person 5 bucks for fear it may go toward alcohol. But these same persons probably have no problem whatsoever forking over billions in aid to other countries.

One thing that has got to me is the dual citizenship public officials in our country can hold. Personally I think to be elected to a Federal Office then we need to have a law where they renounce their citizenship in any other country. We have a bunch of Mexican citizens who are elected officials.

pressto, the U.S. does not recognize dual citizenship of naturalized citizens. Since most countries tend not to allow “giving up” your citizenship, naturalized Americans can have de facto dual citizenship, but the U.S. government does not recognize it.

As for renouncing citizenship of their former country, it is already mandated in the oath of allegiance of naturalized citizens:

“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”
