Aspiring Muslim writers, directors, actors introduced to entertainment industry
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) and FOX Television recently co-hosted a “Hollywood 101″ workshop and studio tour to introduce aspiring Muslim writers, directors and actors to the entertainment industry. The event, held at FOX Studios in Century City, was
also designed to help promote a positive change in Hollywood’s portrayal of Muslims and Arabs.Those taking part in the event included students and entry-level professionals hoping to build contacts in the industry and seeking tips on advancing their careers. Participants were given a tour of the studio lot, a presentation on FOX internships and a one-hour interactive seminar featuring five industry professionals.
One participant, Nadia Afghani, said the unique event introduced her to the possibilities awaiting Muslim artists in the entertainment industry. “The CAIR Hollywood 101 seminar was phenomenal…I walked away that day feeling inspired, motivated, and hopeful for the Muslim (community),” said Afghani.
CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said efforts to engage media outlets that shape popular culture are crucial to promoting an accurate and balanced portrayal of Muslims in America and around the world.
“Our goal is to help nurture aspiring Muslim artists and to act as facilitators in providing support to emerging Muslim talent in the entertainment industry,” said Ayloush.
Ayloush thanked FOX, in particular its Diversity Department, for co-hosting the event and realizing the importance of engaging young American Muslims who seek to work as entertainment content creators.
CAIR, America’s largest Islamic civil liberties group, has 33 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
You know, some people “cringe” when they see me on FOX.
Well, I cringe when I read about FOX Television sucking up to the unindicted co-conspirator CAIR and Fox News treating its double-talking mouthpieces respectfully on TV.
No wonder FOX and the rest of the national MSM ignored CAIR’s bullying attempts against Robert Spencer.
No wonder the Hamas trial coverage in Texas has been so lousy.
“Diversity Department?” How about a Patriotism Department? How about reaching out to the brave Muslim/ex-Muslim critics of jihad and sharia? How about promoting their stories, their causes, their voices?
That would be fair and balanced.

They have had a monopoly on the cable news for six years and I think it has gone to their heads. They have taken it to MSM, I’ll grant them that but this slight is more than I can stomach.

Actually, I just started watching “24″ on DVD. And there were plenty of Muslims.

I’m with you on this one Michelle. Fox broadcast is no better than the rest of the MSM. And FNC has largely ignored the Texas court case and CAIR in general. And since you no longer sit in for or have segments on O’Reilly, my viewing habits have been adjusted (so to speak). I’m ready for more Hot Air Live TV!
As an aside, I wore my Hot Air ball cap at the Petite LeMans (auto race, 10 hours or 1,000 miles) this past weekend and received several thumbs up nearly every hour. We were camping at turn 5 from Wednesday on. You have a lot of fans Michelle!

Um, I thought Islamofascists were against heathen infidel entertainment. Why are they looking to break into show business when the restored global Caliphate is just going to shut it down? Or are these new writers just there to soften up resolve against standing up for Western culture by making self-preservation a racist act? How about a realistic, nevermind negative portrayal first. One that illustrates their humane treatment of prisoners by cutting the heads off of bound captives while they scream and gurgle in their own blood. Or illustrate them giving back to the community by showing them setting off an IED, then setting off another one to kill the responders.
Or maybe we could highlight their respect toward women by illustrating the concept of “honor rapes” or the lovely punishment of stoning a woman to death for alleged adultery. Or maybe show something mild like women being caned, just for showing their hair in public.
Why don’t we show realism or negativity, then worry about positive portrayal but only if we’ve gone too far with the negativity first?

I praise them when they deserve to be praised and criticize them when they deserve to be criticized.
If you had bothered to watch the show, you would know that Muslim terrorists were the villains of the 2nd, 4th, and part of the 6th seasons. The Communist Chinese were also features of the past two seasons. The off-years when they tried to use generic Eastern European bad guys suffered in comparison.

Palestinians, despite their unsavory, disgusting, and self-destructive method of publicizing their cause through terrorism have been a victim of injustice through the creation of Israel. They would do much better by following the Jewish methods of PR, such as tearjerkers put out by a budding al-Spielberg, continuous whining about the past, and lobbying and controlling our corrupt Congress.

My husband raised a good point…he believes Fox is trying to curry favor with the Democratic party by pulling this stunt…just in case Hillary becomes president. Fox would want to have access to exclusive interviews; therefore, they have to distance themselves from the perception that Fox is all about conservative viewpoints.
You mean aside from the fact that the Jews were there over 3500 years before Islam was even invented or the fact that Palestine (a mandate not a country) which included Transjordan (across the Jordan) as 79% of the Palestinian mandate, was divided into Palestine and Jordan with the lions share (79%) going to the Arabs/Muslims. But that wasn’t good enough for them, so they selfishly tried (to this day) to keep the remaining 21% for themselves as well.
Not to be a constant pain in the ass around here, but in the interest of trying to keep it real, a shot at a little accuracy. My better half has been an executive in the entertainment business for over 20 years, so I feel sort of qualified to speak up. Up until pretty recently, depictions of Muslims in film and on TV have been almost universally and stereotypically negative. Recently, however, there’s been some goofy PC blowback, and you see these sort of forced and artifical plotlines where the terrorist group is something other than a jihadist outfit…pretty silly. BTW, nothwithstanding the obviously and overwhelmingly left lean in Hollywood as it relates to politics, the real ideology of choice in the entertainment biz is the pursuit of as much cash as humanly possible. Trust me, if a re-make of The Green Berets or a flattering biopic of Rush Limbaugh was guaranteed a $100 mil opening weekend, it would be green lighted tomorrow.

Given how Hollywood has been willing as of late to flush a lot of money down the toilet to produce one antiwar, troop-and-America-hating flop after another, I have doubts about that.
How come no studio will have a similar seminar for aspiring Christian filmmakers, actors, etc. or discuss negative stereotypes about Christians?

None of Hollywood’s actions are too surprising when you consider that it’s an industry populated with people to whom “ordinary” reality is anathema: they make ther livings either caricaturing the real world, or spinning alternate realities.
In Hollywood, you resolve “misunderstandings” and avoid “hurt feelings” by simply changing the script: like in the movie version of Tom Clancy’s The Sum of All Fears, which transforms the Mohammedan bad guys into neo-Nazis.
It follows, then, that if in the real world we’re having problems with third-world dictators or religious fanatics, then all we have to do is change the script: we can “have a dialogue” with them, encourage them to “celebrate their diversity,” wear shirts emblazoned with anti-war slogans, castigate George Bush and be “tolerant” of their intolerant behaviors.
And in return, they’ll see what neat people we are, and stop being bad guys.
Click your heels together and keep chanting, “There’s no terror threat! There’s no terror threat! There’s no terror threat….” and just like Dorothy, you’ll wake up and everything that’s happened since 9/11 will turn out to be just a bad dream.
Or at least nothing so bad that your money can’t insulate you from it.

As for improving the image of Muslims, viewers are too intelligent to be fooled by this transparent propaganda ploy. How many people were fooled by “The Triumph of the Will” into thinking that Nazism was a force for good? At least, outside of diplomatic circles?

greenfairie, there are actually a couple of pretty successful production companies specializing in “values-based” films and TV shows. Phil Anschutz (one of the richest people in the country) is a big player in that market and has produced some pretty successful stuff. I think you must realize that Hollywood has produced quite a few films that paint the military in a positive light, and many of them have made quite a bit of money. In Hollywood, money trumps all.
BTW, the big studios passed on Passion because they didn’t think anyone would go see a 2 1/2 plus hour subtitled movie about a guy being tortured for almost the entire film. They were wrong, as they often times are. If there was a sequel to be made, the bidding war would be comical.
So, will this mean that the Zawahiri and UBL videos threatening our imminent failure and destruction will now have better cinematography and production values?

Why is this so surprising when Saudi Prince al-Walid bin Talal owns over 5% of Fox and has been a major financial contributor to CAIR? I guess everyone forgot what he did in 2005 with the Muslim riots in France. al-Walid said, “I picked up the phone and called Murdoch … [and told him] these are not Muslim riots, these are riots out of poverty,” So what did Murdoch do? He changed the banners to “civil riots“
Or, they could just continue following up on the relentless Arab propaganda throughout the world which has managed to turn Israel from “David” into “Goliath” by using the “Palestinian Scum” the Arab world abhors as foils to turn world opinion against Israel.
You show little understanding of the geopolitical situation impending upon Israel by a unified Arab world against it with plenty of cash to push its own genocidal agenda through proxy terrorist organs such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
The decades long corruption, violence, and thievery of Yassir Arafat- who kept the so-called “palestinians” in camps and fomented intifadas that threatened Israel’s security, while fostering terrorist splinter groups to shield him from blame for outright butchery of Jews- had a little bit to do with the plight you refer to as “victims of injustice”.

Saudi holdings of any financial institutions, media assets, or foundations/charities in the USA should be prohibited unless oil prices are held to below 35.00 per barrel.

Katie Sackoff is not THE Bionic Woman, she is A bionic woman. She (Sarah Corvus) was the first, but she went crazy. Michelle Ryan is Jamie Somers, the titular BW, but she is too simpy compared to Sackoff.
