Introducing MillerCoors

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 9, 2007 09:06 AM

Beer news from the WSJ:

Molson Coors Brewing Co. and SABMiller PLC plan to combine their U.S. and Puerto Rican operations, creating a beer powerhouse with annual revenue of about $6.6 billion.

The venture will be called MillerCoors. The two companies will share control of the venture, but because of the economic value of their respective units SABMiller will have a 58% economic interest to Molson Coors’s 42% interest.

Reader Jim wisecracks: “Imagine the street fair they can sponsor now!”

Swell.

Here’s Molson Coors’ contact info.

Wonder if their website filters will screen out photos of the Miller-approved Folsomfest, too?

We have two personal fouls on the play, both on the offense. Personal foul on #2, unsportsmanlike sponsorship. Personal foul on #40, unnecessary skunkness. Both beers have been ejected from the fridge.

I know what you’re saying and I don’t disagree, but look at it another way. The damage seems to be in the freak cities and the multinational corporations. Look around your town; even in Queens, there aren’t guys walking around wearing scrotum harnesses and giving whipping demonstrations in the street. That is a SanFran leftist sexual deviant freak show. If they did that here in the south suburbs of Chicago, they’d get shot.

The problem is the amoral corporations. There seems to be no level of deviancy that they are unwilling to support in order to make a sale. So screw Ford, Miller and Coors. Ford’s sales were down 13% in August alone. They’ll freakshow themselves right out of business.

Coors is urine, anyway; so is Miller. They want to support the deviant freaks, let them. Don’t buy their products.

But most Americans still have their heads screwed on right. We just need to isolate the weirdos.

Some time ago, I wrote an Open Letter to August Busch. Read it for yourself and understand why I plan to partake of his products — if I was to ever partake again, that is….

    Excerpt:

I am overwhelmed in what struck me as the greatest outpouring of love and gratitude I have ever received for my role in defending this nation I love so much. I believe I can speak for most veterans when I say that we have never tried to be heroes. We had a job to do. We did it, and it was our pleasure.

Even for those who disagree with certain aspects of our various missions (let’s face it, Iraq is controversial), we appreciate the support from home. Letters and packages from home mean the world to us. E-mail is a god-send.

But that two-minute rally of “thanks” meant as much to me as all the letters and notes of support I could have ever received.

So, on behalf of those who have served with me, I say a fond “You’re Welcome.”

Uh, ajmontana, Coors might be the most conservative company in the country. Maybe you’re still recovering from the Sox absolutely destroying an unbelievably inept Angels team, but as a reminder, Coors is headquartered in Golden not Boulder. Pete Coors is probably more conservative than 99% of the folks on this board. Drink whatever damn beer you want for chrissakes. If you guys boycotted every corporation that did something that offended the purity of your ideology, you’d die of starvation, thirst or exposure.

NASCAR. I didn’t think you could even have a conversation at a NASCAR event without using the word “hell” at least once, so it must have been scrotum that hit the button. What kind of a world do we live in where I can’t tell NASCAR to take their Coors and go to hell without the threat (ironic, I know!) of the FBI breaking down my door and confiscating my computer.

There is a certain element of truth to this.

However, back in the day, I used to make my own wine as a hobby, and I know how to make my own beer. It’s not for everyone, but with a modest understanding of how fermentation works (you don’t need to be a chemist OR a rocket scientist, INOW), you can make your own. In fact, you can find kits where all you need to do is add water. A couple of quarts of water, a couple of months later, wallah!

Or, more likely, you can change your adult beverage of choice to the beer manufactured from a local microbrewery. There are all over most metro areas. There is one I patronize that sells it by the reusable gallon jug. And the product they sell is much better and far beyond any of the piss-water the major brewers sell. There is even a liquor store nearby that stocks the product of seveal local microbrewies.

Or you can “upgrade” your taste from beer to wine. I mean, why guzzle beer when you can sip wine (with your pinky finger extended in true devotee fashion), eat brie, and pretend you’re European royalty or a Hollywood liberal. Just remember, the really good stuff DOES NOT COME WITH A SCREW TOP! ;^)

So, we as consumers ARE NOT TRAPPED by a corporate conglomerate into drinking the swill they make, and who choses to put part of their corporate profits into a “festival” that offends most of us.

    Bon aperitif (or whatever)!

Maybe it is just me, but it is very difficult to fathom just how NASCAR fans will support a company that sponsors events and programs that are the exact opposite of what they believe in and stand for.

Apparently, the deal Coors struck with NASCAR was in the $20 million range. Certainly not small change. Perhaps they are really going for the merchandising angle. The NASCAR bondage collection? Might be a whole new NASCAR fan base out there….

Why would anyone boycott the sponsors of cartoon character entertainers such as Limbaugh, Hannity or O’Reilly? Silly. Absent really compelling and dire circumstances, boycotts are a waste of time in my opinion. Do you honestly think Pete Coors would be living up to his fiduciary duty to his shareholders by killing a merger simply because Miller sponsored some goofy event in SF? Really?

    Dakine,
I don’t think it’s a good mix with Coors and Miller. I think they may have some shareholders who feel that it’s not the best company to merge with. I remember in 1976, our family traveled to the West while everyone went East. My dad got so many orders for Coors (at that time they didn’t sell in NW Indiana) that he had to tell people he wouldn’t have enough room in the car for the family and our massive amounts of luggage (well me and my mom). It was really a big deal when you could finally get it in IN.
There are a lot of people on the left that I know who do make it a point to boycott anyone who advertises on Rush or Hannity. They think they’re doing their civic duty. I can’t imagine though that I will ever buy Coors again myself (the thrill being gone of not being able to get it in this part of the country) and I like Bud Light and Smithwick’s from Ireland much better.

Golden is just down the road from Boulder, but is very much the old-fashioned small town. Boulder is our own little piece of San Fran – ugh. I drive by the plant several times a day while taking my son to school at Golden High. My eldest son works at CoorsTek, a sometimes subsidiary of Coors still run by a Coors family member.

Coors (and CoorsTek) is a good company that treats it’s employees well. Since the boycott, they have developed a huge pot of diversity programs, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

That doesn’t mean they would sponsor something like the Folsom Fest, I hope not. They do sponsor a lot of gay pride fests, but those seem to be more family-oriented events, not of the San Fran variety. I know Denver’s gay pride fest is pretty tame, just a lot of rainbows and 5K runs. The peversion at Folsom Fest would never be tolerated here.

As for their beer, my husband does enjoy a Blue Moon now and then as well as other craft beers. Colorado is the microbrew capital of the US so there’s no reason to drink any big brand beer.
