Why did Google ban anti-MoveOn.org ads?
Update 10:45am Eastern. Want to see the banned ads? Here’s the scoop from the guy who tried to place them.
***
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been driving home the little-noticed story about MoveOn.org bullying mom-and-pop Internet shop owners who criticized the General Petraeus ads. Remember how they got them to yank their anti-MoveOn merchandise? By abusing trademark law.
Well, it looks like they may be at it again. Possibly with Google’s help. Robert Cox reports for the Examiner:
Internet giant Google has banned advertisements critical of MoveOn.org, the far-left advocacy group that caused a national uproar last month when it received preferential treatment from The New York Times for its “General Betray Us” message.
The ads banned by Google were placed by a firm working for Republican Sen. Susan Collins’ re-election campaign. Collins is seeking her third term.
Earlier this week, Google told Lance Dutson, president of Maine Coast Designs, that the ads he placed for Collins had been removed and would not be allowed to resume because they violated Google’s trademark policy.
Google’s Web site states, “Google takes allegations of trademark infringement very seriously and, as a courtesy, we’re happy to investigate matters raised by trademark owners.” That suggests Google acted in response to a complaint by MoveOn.org.
Welcome to George Soros’s America.

Welcome to George Soros’s America.
Is this supposed to be a link?
At this rate we will be living under communist rule within the next 50 years, if it takes that long. Goodbye freedom of speech.
Ummmm, so goggle does not allow posters to have music in the background? If you are going to tell a lie, it might as well be a big one.
AJ, click “EXAMINER”
lol thanks, 1st cup ya know…
ajmontana, there were links, but Soros had them removed by his minions of doom.
And Viper1, personally I think we’ll be in the middle of a full blown civil war within 5 years, especially if St. Hillary becomes president.
evilned;
I sure hope you’re wrong about that, but with comrade hillary’s F-rating from the NRA it wouldn’t suprise me in the least.
gsp
soon you will not be able to utter the words “move on” without being sued for copyright/trademark infringement … that is unless you are being one of their sheep and agreeing with their line of totalitarian BS …
Dont answer you’re doorbell today dl, its a process server.
Again I say: Over my dead body…
deja vu
Mine too.
“And Viper1, personally I think we’ll be in the middle of a full blown civil war within 5 years, especially if St. Hillary becomes president.”
Yep.
Very sad.
But, Hillary & Soros?
Much, much more frightening and terrible.
In reference to George Soros and Moveon, money talks and bullcrap walks. These brownshirt tactics will not work for long. People of good Faith will realize that they are being herded and mislead.
Tell Soros I said to bring it on aj … I am really in the mood to take them on today … the absurdity of their BS about the phrase has really got me riled up …
imagine … if they got their exclusive rights to that phrase …
law enforcement trying to break up a group of people can’t tell them to “move on” … trademark infringement
an athlete can no longer be described as have made a “move on” another player … trademark infringement
you can no longer “move on” down the road … trademark infringement
you can forget about that “move on” the dance floor … trademark infringement
and worst of all you can no longer make a “move on” that sexy thing at the other end of the bar … trademark infringement
Well … hey Soros … trademark infringe this …
/rant & sarc off
DL, Fired up for tonights game!
If I had his ear I’d tell him more than that. lol
Maybe conservative bloggers could boycott Google Ads in a show of our disapproval?
Freedom of Speech for the left means Freedom of Speech only for the left.
aj … have tickets to tonight, and tomorrow night, and game 6 and 7 next week if they are needed … GO D’BACKS …
Hell hate no fury like a liberal advocacy groups spurned by even the slightest implication that anybody would rebuke their ridiculous antics.
meatpieandtatters
doesn’t take much to set them off does it?
coooooool dl
Hold up a sign that says
Moveon.org sucks!
I am a big student of history and can’t compare a division in American society this big since the issue of “free states vs. slave states” leading up to the first Civil War. Keep your weapons cleaned and your powder dry (like I said in a previous post you can never have too much ammo). George Soros and his minions are out to destroy everything that has made American great. He has bought and paid for the Democrats and brow beaten many weak kneed RINOs into submission. I still believe a tax free entity can’t hide behind trademark laws otherwise it should lose its tax exempt status and .org designation for a website. I will be fighting for the one thing I have served other than God (at most times I have done poorly on this one but I know he forgives me). The US Constitution I have sworn to support and defend for 25 years of Military Service and 6 years of Civil Service. I will not go quietly into the night, I like many of you will stand and fight!
Rant Off/Man that felt good getting that off my chest!
GOOLAG.
Sanitized information. One search at a time.
Wake up, America.
~nuff said.
aj … would be a thought … lol
Google shouldn’t take sides.
They’re essentially an international neccessity at this point similar (but not in importance or scope) to other avenues of free enterprise such as canals and they should be open to any and all legal commerce, regardless of whether or not they agree with them.
Get one of those shirts dl!!!!
Liberal censorship is epidemic on the world wide web.
I have never seen a blog post or conservative leaning article on digg or reddit become popular, they are usually voted to the basement.
I posted an opinion on the Rush Limbaugh attack on reddit and the very first comment I got was at first obscene and then ended by being told to go somewhere and die.
So much for open discussions I suppose.
This is crazy.
Maybe Google and MoveOn.org should move on to the 4th ammendment. A little search and seizure might shed some light on this situation and allow the feds to then use the 5th ammendment when they advise them of their rights.
According to their website
“Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
They also list “Ten things Google has found to be true”. Number 4 states “Democracy on the web works.”
Apparently ‘Democracy on the web” has its limitations for Google and the information they vow to organize and make universally accessible is not universal at all, since it excludes those that oppose Move-on.org and the entire population of China. Google is reported to have made an agreement with China to allow government censorship to their citizens.
So much for ‘Democracy on the web”, “universal access’ …and free speech.
guess, I’ll be using yahoo as my search engine, starting now…
Boomer–#23:
Exactly the same conclusion I’ve reached.
Not since the decade or so preceding the Civil War has there been this much division/polarization in our society, form what I’ve been able to learn from history.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed the “Google” search engine while at Stanford University … so although they generally keep a low-profile on the personal level it should not come as a surprise if they are really lefty leaning billionaires along with Gates and Soros …
This can’t be true, the only people who ever stifle free speech are the KKKonservatives… Kos told me so!
/sarcasm
Thanks for the idea…just abandoned Google and switched to Yahoo.
I will support and defend the Constitution of The United States of America against all enemies foreign or DOMESTIC!
Lance Duston runs a good blog called the MaineWebReport also.
If people want restitution or redress on their grievances against MoveOn.org, then why waste time in the “court of public opinion.”
Google knuckled under to legal threats.
How would MoveOn.org respond to a legal threat?
If MoveOn.org’s threats are impinging on free speech and defame the character of organizations as copyright infringers, then why not get an injunction or cease and desist order against them.
Seems like an open and shut way to knock Soros’ plan off course. In this instance, public opinion is good over the long term. But in the short term, political campaigns are being sideswiped by a Jew hating, pro-jihad, pro-Socialist, pro-open borders, anti-American front group for Soros.
Has the Right run out of money to pay legal fees to some of the best lawyers in the world?
Are we conceding 2008 to Hillary?
They are certainly ramping up: Bill Clinton makes the cover of Atlantic magazine concerning his revolutionary approach to philanthropy and “saving the world”.
Yikes. What have we got going? I am hearing Mr. Conservative_Cat’s echoes over winning and losing in the media.
They are buying the White House pure and simple.
gregorystephens the following is the oath I have taken freely several times in my life. Thanks for reminding me of it:
I do solemnly sear that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the Officers appointed over me according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God!
Just don’t think I can obey the orders of the President if “she who must not be named” steals the office. Good thing I am retired from the Military now.
Google made great hay of their corporate motto: Don’t be evil.
Their acolytes cheered when they told the Justice Department to bugger off when they were asked for search data concerning pedophiles.
But they remained silent as Google collaborated with Communist China to censor searches in exchange for access to the market. Freedom was secondary to a billion potential customers, I suppose.
Now they’re siding up with a group with Bolshevism at heart against the legitimate free speech rights of the public.
I’m sure they’re still thinking they aren’t evil.
Bear…
Great idea.
Why don’t we pass that along to Senator Collins. I’m sure she has a team of lawyers on retainer that could at least send a letter to MoveOn.org and let them know that their little scheme will be challenged. She was the one damaged so she has a direct cause of action.
I wonder how long before our friends who blindly use Blogger can’t question $oro$, Hiliary, and the DN¢?
Dutson should submit another ad to Google asap.
In the title of my version below “Move-On.Org” is completely covered, not just struck through.
Something on that idea. As I’ve learned from South Park, it’s legal to say an objectionable phrase if at least five words come between the two words.

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention, updated throughout the day…so check back often.
These people live in the shadows. Who are the Moveon people ramrodding this? Who is in charge at Google? Now they hide behind logos. Shine a light on them and they will scurry like roaches back to the darkness.
Outstanding work, DMC.
It’s time to call for an boycott of Google. This is ridiculous, and if they are going to try to suppress free speech, we should fight it, using exercising our own free speech rights to not use Google.
I’ve just removed Google toolbar from my browser as well as removing it as my default search engine. You should all do the same.
Google Investor Relations contact page:
http://www.google.com/support/investors/
This gets you straight to the finance guys that only want the stock to go UP, UP and UP.
Ask them if they want only the liberal left as shareholders.
Awwww…Busted!
Support Susan Collins.
Google bad, very biased.
So you are not allowed to even type Moveon.org? Seems to me that this is all that those ads did…have Moveon.org in the name of the link. If this is the case, then just going to their site, let alone having a link to it anywhere, is in gross violation of their trademark policy. i say fine, they must report anyone who visits their site to their attorneys simply because they violated the law in typing out their site. God help them if they actually have it saved in their Favorites file.
George Soros Sucks…moveon.org sucks
google sucks….coincidence?…I think not.
If General Patraeus and President Bush trademarked their names, would Google and the NYT disallow ads against them? I think not.
Yahoo is operated by leftists also, but not quite as far left as Google…dropping Google search now as I did drop their email service after reading their news page the 1st time. I thought i was Europa.
As others have stated here already, looking more and more like a another civil war in the near future. Seems most of the good is on our side…police, firemen and military…are we looking at a coup?
Either way I’m stocking up on more 2nd amendment rights.
Here’s something I’ve been using lately, it doesn’t give me that nifty google homepage but it does clean the cookies so google can’t track and store my searches.

Chirp chirp…
Stupid me. I thought all those big huge stinking rich companies were Republican.
There’s a survey at the Examiner site. Here are the result as of a few minutes ago:
Hello out there… anybody home?
What fair and neutral web search engine/home page would anyone recommend? I’d long no doubt of Googles’ sentiments.

This doesn’t look good for Google. Well, that may be another one to take off the list along with Yahoo and all their left-wing biased articles.
I guess I’ll be working from lycos from now on.
I have a Google e-mail account and like the layout as well as the size of files I can tranfer as well as the size of things I can store. i also like the fact that, unlike Hotmail, they do not delete the account after a month of non-use.
Following this information, I now wish to scrap my e-mail account with them, but do not know of any other e-mail accounts that are offering similar services.
Does anyone have any ideas?
The proposed ads are NOT copyright violations. No one is likely to confuse the fact that someone other than Google placed the ad.
If the ad were structured in a way that led people to believe MoveOn placed the ad, then that would be a copyright violation. In that case, there would be an intention to profit from the MoveOn copyright.
Google wants to hold iteself as a news site, yet does not want to adopt standards of good journalism.
First they sell out to China and now they censor conservative ads. While the left is quick to sling around the term “neocon”, I think Google and the Soros cabal have just earned the moniker “neocom”.
Hey all is not lost, Google’s stock dropped almost $4 tonight – ~$3.35 or .5%.
Not a bad start.
Now, I doubt its due to their banishment of MoveOn.org ads, but its a place to start. I noticed at least one media outlet picked up the story, I’m watching one of the others now to see if they mention it. Let’s hope it gets more attention.
Google:
Now blocking for MoveOn and the Government of China.
Old google motto:
New google motto:
You should have done this long ago
I can not believe Michelle uses their service!
Google is much more dangerous than MoveOn because people are not aware of there agenda. Read some articles on them at WND.
I give Cafe Press and anyone else permission to use my new logo.
