Introducing 10 Questions

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 17, 2007 11:07 AM

Hot Air and I are co-sponsors with techPresident’s new project, “10 Questions,” a “people-powered online presidential forum.” We think it’s important to add balance, so we’re asking our readers to create their own questions to the presidential candidates and go vote on the questions already posted on the site. Bryan explains:

It’ll be divvied up in two rounds spanning two months, with the first round starting today. In Round 1, anyone with a video camera and the ability to upload to YouTube, MySpace Yahoo Video, or Blip.tv can submit a video question. To enter, upload your video question to one of these sites and tag it “10questions.” Be sure to give it a descriptive title so others can find it. And if you want, add additional tags that describe it further. The questions should be addressed to the candidates as a group, as opposed to any single candidate.

At the end of the first round, the questions will be collected from those sites and put on the 10 Questions site, where anyone can vote on which ones should be answered by the presidential candidates. In Round 2, the candidates tape their answers and upload them for judging. Round 2 begins on November 17, so you have until then to come up with a question, shoot it and submit it. 10 Questions ends on December 31.

What would you ask that the stenographers and water-carriers in the MSM won’t ask?

Yea, and everytime one of them lies, he should get zapped with a mild, but stinging electric current.

Why can’t politicians figure out that they have to live in this country too, and their voting patterns, effects them as much as any other American Citizen. Think before passing laws, you don’t think, will effect you personally.

Why can’t the politicians figure out that if you don’t have a healthy middle class (See Mexico as example) YOUR Country goes to Hell. Playing Class Warfare to get yourself elected, isn’t about American Citizens, it is about your Power Hunger…and why do the politicians think we can’t figure out the difference btw a Politician and a Statesman?

I am an American I don’t want you to do what you think is for my own good, I want you to represent me, that is why I voted for you. I don’t need a Mommy or a Daddy.

I am NOT a Globalist, I am an American, if you try and saddle the American people, with this identity, don’t be suprized when they buck you off.

If you can’t marry your self interest to your oath of office, don’t run for office.

Charity begins at home, worry about American Citizens before citizens in the rest of the World..I promise their countrys, are not thinking of American Citizens and putting us first. Yes, I understand the intracies of international trade agreements and how that keeps Americans employed…do you?

The American Military comes through for their country everytime, how about showing them the respect they deserve. Next time you can’t vote against a Slur aganist an American Military Officer, supposedly an Add, in a major American newspaper or any other Media entity, re think your position. You vote to confirm a General, and then when he does his job, and it doesn’t fit your Political Agenda, you disrespect him in front of his Country, the same Country, he has taken an oath to protect and serve.

Civic Classes, I think every American Politician taking office should have to pass at least the same citizen test Naturalized Americans have to.

Finally remember who you have to answer to, the corporations who try to buy you off, their votes only count once just like the rest of us. Hint there are more of us.

    a. What are your plans to repay this debt?
    b. Are you in favor of ceasing any further ability of the federal government from “borrowing” from Social Security for any reason?

Social Security must be addressed now. Unlike other federal programs, it is not an “entitlement program per se. All US citizens have 15% of their eligible income contributed to the trust
every year. That money, if truly held in trust for its participants, would be earning interest and compounding in value each year. For those that will retire in the next 10 to 20 years, the amount of those contributions over a lifetime of work would be more than adequate to comfortably provide for those participant’s retirement needs.
Does the federal government plan to honor its promise to provide social security benefits to US citizens? And if so, how?

    ACHefty #7:

    Your question,

“7. Will you push for legislation that removes voting rights of those on the public dole?”

just might have to be addressed, sooner rather than later.

I’m reminded of the folowing quotation:

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”

I found it at this site (sorry, not expert at hyperlinking):

    http://lorencollins.net/tytler.html

    which states:

“Who penned the above words? If one were to put one’s faith in the reliability of the internet, the obvious answer would be Alexander Tytler. Or Alexander Tyler. Or Arnold Toynbee. Or Lord Thomas Macaulay. Or…

The truth is that despite their frequent use, the author(s) of the above quotes are unknown. With regard to the first quoted paragraph, the Library of Congress’ Respectfully Quoted writes, “Attributed to ALEXANDER FRASER TYTLER, LORD WOODHOUSELEE. Unverified.” The quote, however, appears in no published work of Tytler’s.

    OK.
Now that the provenance of the quotation has been dealt with, to the point:

ACHefty’s question #7 may very well become critical very soon, what with the expansion of the welfare state, and the push for further expansion of the welfare state that uncontrolled, illegal, amnestied immigration would bring in its wake.

Perhaps we need such a law – sooner, rather than later.

If an amendment to the Constitution was found to be required, then fine; so be it.

Take the gloves off now, and have a serious legislative battle for such an amendment.

It may be a bruising and titanic legislative battle; but, the alternative might be a return to the situation in the U.S. in the first half of the 1860s.

Stop and think about the quotation above.

It illustrates well the instability of a system that has no stabilizing, negative feedback; which is sort of how we’re set up now:

When more and more people on the public dole vote themselves more and more benefits, and vote for the expansion of those benefits to more and more people, then the collapse of the system is inevitable and guaranteed – just as a Ponzi scheme must ultimately collapse.

Negative feedback means that when an effect is produced, an antagonist of that effect is produced, which then leads to a decrease of that effect, which then leads to a decrease in that antagonist. (Which lives in the house that Jack built…sorry.)

In our present system, where is the stabilizing antagonist to the increased and expanded governement benefits?

Thw answer is that there is none.

Hence, our present system is one of positive feedback; which, as far as I am aware, is inherently unstable.

Are you familiar with the inherently safe “Pebble-Bed” nuclear technology and it’s potential not only to produce electricity, but to directly convert steam to hydrogen?
Would, in your opinion, new clean and robust energy technology effectively undercut the public rationales professed in the current nuclear proliferation crisis?

While Reagan self-comparisons seem de-rigeur in this primary; do you have a broader “now” based concept of how you will convince Americans that you are the best man to lead and guide America in this day and age?

Do you believe conservatism must be hyphenated, that it must be qualified to be acceptable to American voters?

We’ve seen the extremes of poll-driven governance in the 90’s to the bunkhouse mentality of the Administration in this decade; what is your vision of an effective American president’s continuing conversation with the public?

Reagan defeated Sovet Communism and US “malaise” with a solidly Democratic Congress: How would you plan to succeed in such a circumstance?

Do you remember when President Bush was first elected and he wanted to change the tone in Washington? He reached out and passed a Ted Kennedy education bill. He made the first gesture but the left is still so angry about everything. The Randi Rhodes episode is a perfect example of that.

Changing the tone in Washington… I don’t think even Reagan was optimistic enough to claim such a goal. Yet Reagan was far more successful with an opposition congress. I think it’s not just the charm, the optimism, the faith; I think it’s also the gumballs, and W simply is no RR.

Yesterday I was in DC at the Republican Jewish Coalition 2008 Candidate Forum. Giuliani, McCain, Romney and Thompson were all there, as well as Sam Brownback and several Senators.

I asked Senator Thompson the following…

“I am a republican blogger who understands that with freedom of the press comes responsibility. Are you willing to enforce the Bush Doctrine of cracking down on anybody that aids or harbors terrorists, even if it is our own cultural institutions? Specifically, our poison ivy league universities have Tea with Mussolini and Columbian Coffee with Armageddonijad, and our troops get killed when their cover is blown by the Jayson Blair Times. How will you, being a member of the media yourself, balance freedom of speech with keeping those who abuse those freedoms from getting our soldiers killed, and inviting terrorists on our universities when they should be at Guantanamo Bay?”

I spoke quickly to make the quesiton not seem long, and his answer was FABULOUS! He hit a home run, and I want all the candidates to answer that question.

I will publish his answer tomorrow or Friday, or one can go to the RJC podcast to see how he responded.

    Respectfully,

    eric

    ACH,
A good list, bit I would amend the following:

    3. Will you appoint judges who will protect Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness?

Make that Life, Liberty, and PROPERTY.

    7. Will you push for legislation that removes voting rights of those on the public dole?

Would be nice (Tocqueville warned us against giving people or congress the power to vote themselves money), but not constitutional. The best we could hope for is an end-run around the Dhimmicrats and give D.C. residents the right to vote in Maryland state elections in lieu of separate statehood rights and representatives.

    10. Will you call on the carpet those who undermine the US in its quest to protect its citizens (Rosie, Sheehan, certain Democrats in Congress)?

A president has no more business than a Senator to call on the carpet any private citizen who is expressing their opinion. (That’s MM’s job! :) )

    GaijinBob,

Thanks for your input on my ten questions.

The pursuit of happiness is part and parcel to property. I am still fuming over the SCOTUS decision on Kelo. How many ways to say wrong?

I agree (as a former resident of the People’s Republic of Maryland that adding DC residents to the voting bloc would be a good alternative to statehood. However, that would require a constitutional amendment as well, since their voting “rights” are outlined already.

As for “calling on the carpet,” I mean the proverbial Bully Pulpit. WJClinton was a master at it. “W” is not. We need a GOP president who can flatly state that dissent is fine, but when you undermine the efforts of those who are protecting our shores and our freedom, it borders on treason. At minimum it is criminal. Time to call it what it is.

For example, when will anyone in Congress or government decry the wanton vandalism of our military facilities and monuments?

BlackTygrrrrrrrrrrr, good to see you back in action.

Michelle, keep up the good work!
