Stark raving mad: Diary of an unhinged Democrat

I noted Rep. Stark’s during my S-CHIP liveblogging, but it’s worth breaking out the rapid response from the GOP here in a separate post.
Before I do that, though, here’s a trip down memory lane from 2003. As I noted in my column back then, Democrats have given Stark a pass before. They’ll give him a pass again:
Rep. Fortney “Pete” Stark (D-Calif.) is the foul-mouthed poster boy for Liberal Double Standards.
There he was on Capitol Hill last week, sounding more like Eminem than an eminent lawmaker, hurling epithets such as “fruitcake” and “c–ks—-r” at Republicans during a mark-up session on pension funds legislation of all things.
Most of the mainstream media coverage of the fracas has focused on the handling of the meeting by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Thomas , who is accused by Democrats of summoning Capitol Hill police to the scene in order to prevent them from meeting in a committee library to discuss procedural objections.
But while Beltway types squabble about whether Thomas was technically out of order, Stark’s blatantly thuggish behavior has once again gotten a pass from the establishment Left.
According to an official committee transcript, Stark physically taunted fellow Ways and Means Committee member Scott McInnis (R-Colorado) while Thomas attempted to hold a voice vote on the bill at hand. In response to McInnis’ demand that Thomas be quiet while the bill was being read, Stark blurted out: “[O]h, you think you are big enough to make me, you little wimp? Come on. Come over here and make me. I dare you.”
Further goading McInnis, a married Republican gentleman, Stark lashed out: “You little fruitcake. You little fruitcake. I said you are a fruitcake.” According to Fox News Channel, witnesses say Stark then hurled a 10-letter homophobic insult at Thomas better suited for an anti-gay rap records than the Congressional Record. Stark’s press office refused to answer my questions on the record about these remarks…
…The silence over Stark is no surprise. Liberals have long looked the other way at Stark’s bigoted boorishness over the course of his three decades in public office. In 1995, when he called Rep. Nancy Johnson (R-Connecticut) a “whore” for the insurance industry and suggested that her knowledge of health care came solely from “pillow talk” with her physician husband, not a single Democrat objected. Not a single of the proud feminists on Capitol Hill signed a letter, supported by 35 Republican House members, demanding that Stark apologize.
Nor did the Congressional Black Caucus emit a peep when Stark lambasted former Bush I Health and Human Services Secretary Louis Sullivan, an accomplished doctor and medical researcher, as “a disgrace to his race and his profession” because he opposed Stark’s socialist health care schemes. “I guess I should feel ashamed because Congressman Stark thinks I am not a ‘good Negro,”‘ Sullivan observed after the 1990 incident. “As a Cabinet member who has spent almost four decades of my life dedicated to healing, … (I) am unable to express my own views without being subject to race-based criticism by those who are not ready to accept independent thinking by a black man.”
Then there was the time Stark attacked former conservative California state welfare director Eloise Anderson in 1999 as a baby-killer, complaining at a public forum that she would “kill children if she had her way” simply because she opposed cradle-to-grave government welfare entitlements. Not a single, finger-wagging editorial from the media elite about the need for decorum and decent behavior in public debate appeared in either the California or national op-ed pages.
The lesson couldn’t be more stark: Only the self-anointed preachers of tolerance and civility on the Left can have their fruitcake and eat it, too.
And remember this? I recounted this story, first reported by KSFO and Joel Mowbray, in Unhinged:
When Daniel Dow returned home Thursday evening, he noticed he had a voice mail message. To his great surprise, it was left by his Congressman, Pete Stark (D-CA), in response to a fax he had sent in an hour earlier.
But to Dow’s even greater surprise, the message was a smarmy smear, one in which Congressman Stark essentially called him stupid and implied that the enlisted man, who had just returned from Kosovo, did not care about enlisted men and women.
And now compounding the Congressman’s callousness, he has released an “apology” distinctly lacking anything resembling an apology.
Here’s a brief recap of the events:
- Thursday evening, the House voted on one of its typical resolutions supporting the troops in Iraq, but also condemning the prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib and calling for a full investigation.
- 16-term San Francisco liberal Pete “Fortney” Stark was one of 50 Congressmen to oppose the non-controversial resolution.
- Daniel Dow wrote an intelligent, though strongly worded letter expressing his outrage and faxed it to Rep. Stark’s office at 4:30pm PST.
- Dow stepped out for some errands, and upon returning home, he listened to his voice mail.
Thankfully, Dow thought on his feet and provided the recording to San Francisco-based talk radio station KSFO. The story caught fire, and by midday Friday, even Rush Limbaugh was talking about it.
Listening to the choice language Stark used, it’s easy to see why. He started out his 53-second message telling Dow, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Stark then informs the enlisted man, “So if you care about enlisted people, you wouldn’t have voted for that thing, either.”
Perhaps such “stark” language might be acceptable responding to a blowhard or an ad hominem attack, but then again, no Congressman would ever waste his time calling such a constituent. (As a practical matter, calls from Congressmen are extremely rare, and Stark is Exhibit A as to why.)
But Dow’s letter, though unequivocal in its criticism, was eloquent, passionate, and intelligent. It might have savaged Stark’s nutty “no” vote on the resolution, but there was not a single personal attack.
If only the Congressman could say the same.
Stark stooped to name-calling, chastising his constituent as an idiot: “Probably somebody put you up to this, and I’m not sure who it was, but I doubt if you could spell half the words in the letter and somebody wrote it for you. So I don’t pay too much attention to it.”
Near the middle of his rambling message, the Congressman promised Dow, “But I’ll call you back later.” Why? Stark explained, “[To] let you tell me why you think you’re such a great, god-damned hero.” (Stark did not call back.)
And now this:
“I yield myself two minutes. Madam speaker, I, first of all, I’m just amazed that they can’t figure out — the Republicans are worried that they can’t pay for insuring an additional 10 million children. They sure don’t care about finding $200 billion to fight the illegal war in Iraq. Where are you going to get that money? Are you going to tell us lies like you’re telling us today? Is that how you’re going to fund the war? You don’t have money to fund the war on children. But you’re going to spend it to blow up innocent people if he can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President’s amusement.”
Don’t question his patriotism. Question his sanity.
Tell me again: Who’s coarsening the debate?
Hmmm?
***
GOP reax…
House Republican Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) issued the following statement today after Rep. Fortney H. “Pete” Stark, D-Calif., suggested on the floor of the House that Republicans are sending men and women to Iraq “to get their heads blown off for the president’s amusement.”
“Pete Stark’s statements on the House floor this afternoon crossed all lines of decency and decorum. As a member of Congress, he should be ashamed. But as a senior member of the Ways and Means Committee – and the current chairman of its Health subcommittee – the Democratic leadership ought to be ashamed as well.
“To claim our men and women in Iraq are serving there for the president’s own personal enjoyment – and worse, to suggest he’s actually ‘amused’ by the image of soldiers being killed – represents a crass appeal to the worst, most base elements of our population. It dishonors the continued sacrifice of our troops in the field, and disrespects their family and friends at home who pray for their safe return. The Democratic leadership should denounce these comments immediately, and Mr. Stark should apologize for making them as well.”
NOTE: Earlier today, Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif, made the following remarks at the podium while managing time for the majority on the SCHIP veto vote: “You’re going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president’s amusement.”
***
Congressman Jeb Hensarling, Chairman of the Republican Study Committee, called on Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the entire Democrat leadership to condemn a statement made on the House floor by Congressman Fortney “Pete” Stark in which referred to the “President’s amusement” in seeing American servicemen “get their heads blown off” while serving in Iraq. In addition, Hensarling called on Congressman Stark to immediately apologize for his hateful comments or resign from office. Early today, during House consideration of a bill on children’s healthcare, Stark made the following comments:
RSC Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) issued the following statement: “Congressman Stark’s comments were hateful and wrong, and should be labeled as such by the House Democrat Leadership. No matter your political position on the war in Iraq or any other issue, it shows a complete disregard for the men and women who have volunteered for military service and the Office of the Presidency to make such an outlandish and asinine statement. “Congressman Stark’s comments are completely inappropriate for an elected official. He should offer an immediate apology, or he should resign from the office in which he has been entrusted to serve. He owes that to the men and women who have so courageously put their life on the line to serve their country and the families that support them.”

Stark the lunatic is going to get a very harsh phone call from this outraged fellow.
Since he from the San Fran area he has just guaranteed his reelection. Pete and Nancy quite a pair.
Crude, infantile behavior is par for the course with Dems.
Not. Holding. My. Breath.
sedition much pete?
Look at all the crickets!
Stark – as in stark raving lunatic?
Well,Congresspunk Fartney cut the cheese again and stunk up the joint…somebody needs to give him some Beano
It continues to amaze me how politicians like Stark get elected, especially when their “debate” is conducted at a grade school level. Actually that’s wrong, my eleven year old has more class. Sorry kids.
You’d be pissed if your parents named you Fortney.
I’m still puzzled why the Democrats are going all out to look like idiots on this issue. It’s not as if they even mentioned it during the 2006 races.
BDS has completely consumed them.
These animals think they can say anything without any repercussion. NOT THIS TIME!
Is he drinking? I mean more then just the lefts kool aid doesn’t this sound like someone with a problem? I mean do rational people respond to their constituents in this manner, when say they are sober? It doesn’t matter if it gets to Hot for him, he will go to Rehab anyway, that’s the way it works right?
Don’t hold your breath.
There’s no mention of this on CBSnews.com or MSNBC.com – ABCNews does have the story.
They all mention the fail to override the veto but only one of those 3 has anything about the outrageous comments by Stark.
They’re covering for their own idiot.
I think is totally appropriate to ask Stark to resign…otherwise I’m not sure they could accommodate a padded office in either the Rayburn, Cannon, or Longworth Buildings…on second thought, maybe they could.
*SIGH*
What to do, what to do…
“Article II Section 4?
The fact is – if a Republican has used the term ‘fruitcake’ towards another man, said some black liberal was a ‘disgrace to his race’, and called a liberal woman a ‘whore’ for anything and claimed that her knowledge of a topic was due to ‘pillow talk’ – he’d be burned at the stake by the MSM as a racist, bigoted chauvanist lout.
To see all the comments this boob has made throughout the years and know he’s still a member of Congress is absolutely disgusting.
No wonder other country’s laugh at us.
Are the dhimmicrats drafting a letter condemning stark the way they did for Rush??
Didn’t think so.
Another reason the Bay Area won’t get much of an enthusiastic response from the military the next time disaster strikes the area.
It would have been quite nice for one of our Republicans to invite Stark to apologize or step outside for further conversation. There was a time when an insult was a debasement of one’s personal honor and a duel ensued. Now it seems we are all just so civilized!!!!
He’s got plenty of company-Pelosi, Murtha, ect…….
Some questions:
If Stark-ster cares SOOOO much for the children, why doesn’t he act to reverse Roe vs Wade?
If he cares SOOO much about helpless little children, why not shut down abortion mills, which take the lives of the smallest and most defenseless?
Is it because aborted humans will not be able to cast a vote?
What is your REAL motive, Sir?
Do your personal goals include fantasies of a dictatorship here in our homeland…with you as the dick-tator?
*********
I am totally disgusted.
He is from SanFran where some really bad, bad mojo must be in the water. Whatever medication he is taking, it ain’t working.
His hatred of the military was palpable. I am sure Mr. Reid is, at this very moment, drafting a condemnation letter to be sent to Mr. Stark’s constituents. No?
Let’s take up a collection to pay for the Orkin man to fumigate Congress…
Mr. Stark: We love our OWN children. WE work to make sure they have health insurance, a good home, a college education. MY responsibility…NOT YOURS….
He originally got elected on the “baby-killer” platform, and that’s what keeps him in office. He’s been singing the same song for thirty years. As far as getting him to resign, fat chance – he’s too far up the seniority ladder for that to happen. Even if he did resign, who would replace him? Any guesses(Marin County, Taking Doctorate at UC Berserkeley, former Congress Critter)?
I’ve already called my Rep Terry, called Rep Boehner, and even StarkRavingMad’s office. The Repubs should shut down the house until this idiot apoligizes on the floor of the house or resigns…PERIOD.
I’m sick of these anti-military slurs by slugs like Stark and Murtha. It is time to make a stand and all you congresscritters better get the damn message.
Resign! sheesh, as stated before, He should be run out of town on a rail.
I just called Stark’s Fremont, CA, office and asked when today’s video would be on his web site. I was told later today.
“Do you have a comment?”, she asked.
“Yes. I cared for my mother with Alzheimer’s, and in my opinion he is senile.”
“Thank you. The phones are ringing off the hook.”
How are gay people not offended that he’s using gay slurs as insults?
I mean, I thought it was supposed to be a good thing to be a fruitcake and c***sucker.
Only one Republican spoke up? I know there aren’t many of our “good guys” left, but where are they?!!!????
OT to Tennessee Dave:
Where in Tennessee are you? I’m in Germantown
Well, I don’t old out much hope, but I’d be interested to see how this comes out as far as news coverage. I mean, I know they’re not mentioning it now, but Michelle has such a head start on this, maybe the MSM will actually get scared into covering it…?
It will be interesting… private citizens who are conservative are immediately called out for what they say (or what people twist their words into.) And yet, this public figure seems like he’ll get the pass for his obvious lies and insults – again. Shouldn’t our public officials be held to a higher standard then private citizens?
Hurrrey! Hurrrey! Hurrrey! Step right up ladies and gentlmen and feast your eyes on a real live Fortney, straight from the city wilds of the Socialist’s Republic of California. Notice its wild-eyed constitution, poised to slobber and spit on anything or anyone within 15 feet of it…Hey! Watch it there sonny, you’re gettin’ a little close…don’t let the tutu and flippers fool ya. It’ll slime you and not think twice. Ya Maw will have to scrub you down with lye soap and burn your clothes. That’ll make her none to happy. Notice, ladies and gentlemen, how it tries to communicate. Why, you’d think it was a 4 year old on crack…that’s slang for a drug, son. It’s make you crazy…you know looney like. Ok…Ok…that’s all for now, folks. We can only let it out a few minutes every couple of hours. The next show will be in 2 hours. Come back then and you’ll get to see feeding time. Its favorite dish is crow and moonpies…Run along now sonny. You’re botherin’ me.
Yes, it will be interesting to see if the big 3, nightly news shows have any mention on Starke raving madman.
Fred, I’m sure they’re phones were ringing off the hook after this got out.
Stark is typical of the left. They hate America. They hate the troops and they their contempt for America hide behind the false moral outrage against the war. He’s a loser and I hope that this catches fire and he gets dropped in the grease!
Punk!
Stark is on clear example why I want psychiatric evaluations on all the candidates before they get anywhere near the White House. Hillary is just a flippin nutso as Stark.
Scary Chief, scary.
Non-coverage of Rep. Pete Stark’s (D) outrageous statements is why I hold ex-Democrat-party operatives like George Stephanopolous,Chris Mathews,Tim Russert, Chris Cuomo (and the hundreds of others behind the scenes) in such low regard.
BREAKING NEWS
HLF trial verdict in but will remain sealed till Monday.
H/T LGF
Don’t count on anyone demanding an apology, the “new base of the democratic party” is applauding it and calling it that old honorable statement “speaking truth to power”.
Stark needs to be taken to, no, not the woodshed, but to the back door and thrown out. If the congress cannot be trusted to police their own does that not leave it up to we the people? Here is a seditious person who likely in the civil war era would have been hanged. As some famous pundit once stated, no one has the b–ls or guts to do it. So let’s go we the people–charge his office, first with calls, emails, visits or whatever it takes to make him crawl on the house floor and make an apology or quit! Let’s make him look over his shoulder. Fruitcake-he’s one alright full of nuts.
He has no reasonable excuse after being admonished by the chair on his first go round earlier in the session.
I guess Media Matters will have to cook-up some new twisted lie to even the playing field again.
#20 –
That’s interesting. I have spent some time the past few days on DU, sincerely trying to understand the other side. Man! I’m not sure if I picked the wrong blog or if the environment in there is common, but that place was brutal. They did not want to hear anything I had to say, all comments were quickly met with insults.
But I digress… On DU someone had posted a thread asking how the crazy Republicans could possibly be pro-life and oppose the SCHIP expansion. I tried to explain some things, but no one would listen to a word. It didn’t seem to occur to any of the people in that thread that the statement could easily be flipped… How can they claim to care so much about children, yet support abortion?
The Stark Naked truth of how the left feels about our brave troops. How many of the 40 who signed the crush Rush letter will condemn him?
Ripped from the postings in Kos land
But President Bush’s statements about children’s health shouldn’t be taken any more seriously than his lies about the war in Iraq. The truth is that Bush just likes to blow things up. In Iraq, in the United States and in Congress.
Naturally, the Congressman’s remarks received overwhelming support here, and I thought you’d like to know that he stopped by to thank everyone:
Hey folks. I wanted to drop by, say hello, and thank you for your kind words of support.
We’ve got to provide health care to children — and we’ve got to end this war!
No, thank you, Rep. Stark!
I wish I was surprised by what Stark said, but I’ve seen it too much by the left over the years for that.
I wonder if Hannity will now challenge Stark’s patriotism? Or will Hannity again say “We can’t know what’s in his heart.”
This lack of backbone is what killed the Republicans in the last election. If the Republican party wants me back then they’ll have to do better than caving to every liberal smear and attack.
Note that I will still generally vote Republican, but I no longer consider myself a member of their party until they start fighting back!
Can’t wait to see how the communist news network spins this one.
Or the NYT.
Why can’t WE THE PEOPLE… recalls someone like this?
Shame on every single Democrat voter in America!
As I said in that other thread, What Stark did was essentially call our Soldiers and Marines “Baby Killers”.
He can go fall in a well and die, for all I can.
Perhaps Stark is being trotted out by the Democrats as the poster child for a new initiative on increasing mental health funding.
Yes, what he said was over the top, and certainly should have been said in private, if her really believes his own statement.
If he simply said it for shock value, I found it more reprehensible.
Maybe he’s trying to sell a book like Ann Coulter. If so, he should wait until he’s out of office. It’s not responsible to say these things on the floor of the House.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if the Higher Power Upstairs shuffled the congressional districts so that Stark found himself having to run for a seat in Mississippi. He and every other member of the House survive on gerrymandering.
Because THEM THE PEOPLE who elected him are the ones who have to do that. Not likely in California.
They are too busy counting the carbonation bubbles from a can of rootbeer to be bothered about little lord fortney.

DU is hopeless. Why do you think it is called Democratic Underground? Because they are all in someone else’s basement, literally or figuratively.
There is a sincere and frightening hive mentality there on that side of the fence and one is not allowed to voice a contrary opinion. Swat at one hornet, and the whole hive will fly out to attack you. None of them want to try and change your mind; they want you destroyed.
And they want to control our fate, ladies and gentlemen.
This story is a favorite tool in my verbal arsenal.
My Irish is up. I have reached the hypocrisy saturation point. Democrats call the troops in Iraq ‘children’ or ‘kids’, but want birth control for 11 year olds. Troops should never die in combat, but a 12 year old is given the right to kill the unarmed child in her womb. There is a daily death toll on our soldiers killed in the war on terror; no tallies of the numbers of Americans killed in the womb every hour on the hour.
I abhor war. I wish our troops were home, too. But this war is necessary to protect all that we love and hold dear. We didn’t start this war, but we sure as hell are gonna finish it. Aren’t we?
Where do I go to get my country back?
Stark is a smacktard. He didn’t vote for the original bill but wants to make an a$$ out of himself for the SCHIP upgrade.
No surprise he is from California. Appalling behavior. Why would anyone want a person such as this representing them in Congress? A huge embarrassment for Democrats. Can you imagine the outrage if a Republican had done this to Clinton? I’ll bet that would get MSM coverage.
Stark is suffering from addled senior syndrome (ASS) disease.
Thanks to Stark the rest of the country is starting to “feel our pain”.
RE: impeachment/recall
During the proceedings against Clinton, it was the Republican leadership that sabotaged that process. Not only that, the CA Republican leadership betrayed its own. We lost a great Congressman in James Rogan thanks to them. Why do we have Feinstein you ask? Because the CA Rep. leadership wanted a man named Huffington while the precinct-walking grassroots wanted Bill Dannemeyer.
Solution:we need more Conservative Republicans from the country to move here. The welcome mat is out. (-:

Stark raving mad: Diary of an
unhingedDemocratPete Stark joins the Murtha caucus
Anybody know if he is somehow related to the unhinged lefty blogger named Mike Stark or are they spelled the same?
Anything less than Stark’s resignation is a crime.
And an insult to all Americans.
And an insult to everyone in the House.
I won’t go on, but it’s a long list.
.
The House should DEMAND IT!
And the Kerry Caucus, the Reid Caucus and the Durbin caucus and the Kennedy caucus and the………….list just goes on and on.
This POS needs to resign as of yesterday. What a waste of oxygen he is
“Starksky and Dunce”
The Starkiss up to Kos kid. Waiting to see the coverage, if any.
Not surprising that Stark has recently “come out” as an atheist.
I would like to propose a new set of words for the Malkin Urban Dictionary:
FORTNEYCATE; FORTNEYCATED; FORTNEYCATING; FORTNEYCATOR – -terms describing the noun, verb, adjective and adverbs associated with the the commission of a public act that offers definitive proof as to the existence of a severe mental disorder (“royal screw up”, in slang), which goes completely unnoticed by the actor due to a terminal case of crainial/rectal inversion.
Other definitions to follow.
Forgot to add FORTNEYCATION
Congressman Stark,
You are nothing but a piece of crap… I find you extremely ugly… you emit a foul and unpleasant odor… I loathe you!
Thank you Newman, my sentiments exactly.
It’s a good thing for Congressman Stark that dueling is illegal (at least, it used to be) in Washington, DC. If this had been in the early- to mid-1800s he would have had several challenges to reply to from fellow Congressmen. (Thanks to Publiuswarmac9999, post #18) for the original thought.) While I’m glad that we don’t actually fight duels to the death, it’s interesting that there is no longer the emphasis on honor in society. Could Lenin have been right, and it’s all a question of who can do what to whom?
Rush should write a letter to Nancy. She could try and auction it to raise money for________ . I bet it wouldn’t go for 2mil
Resign? Only Republicans do that when they get into trouble. Democrats are waivered, via MoveOn.
I heard the speech. This man has “issues”. Serious “issues”. I do not think he is OK.
Errah I thought that was morley safer . . . I like his show on sundays with a few martinis.
