   Photos of military personnel back up at Paso Robles Post Office
   Photos of military personnel were back up on the wall at the Paso Robles Post Office on Monday morning, under the order of the deputy postmaster general.

   The post office received the news Monday morning that they could replace the photos, clerks there said.

   They had been taken down Friday after a customer complained that the display was pro-war. When the issue came to the attention of the regional postal center, they asked that Paso Robles postmaster Mike Milby and his staff take them down because they violate a regulation against displays of non-postal business material at any U.S. post office.

   “It’s an emotional issue and people look at their post office as a hub of the community, but the post office is there to do postal business and it’s not a place to post things or make displays,” said postal spokesman Richard Maher.

   Two signs posted at the postal counter Friday said “We are being forced to remove the pictures from out wall of our boys and girls in the military. Please ask for your pictures back.”

   Clerks were constantly barraged with questions about why the display had gone down Friday, which most people expressing dismay that the photos had been removed.

   Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) objected to the removal after his office was besieged with dozens of phone calls from constituents upset about the removal.

   He contacted the postmaster general’s office in an attempt to reverse the decision, postal staff said.

    Paso Robles is still a great little town and it’s in one of the nicest parts of California. It’s getting a little winey and pricey as rich folks retire there from Silicon Valley and LA, but I’d actually recommend it as a great stop for anyone coming out to the west coast. This incident aside (which you’ll note was quickly corrected), it’s not too moonbatty and is california in a good way–relaxed, pleasant, classy.

    If you like wine but aren’t super pretentious about it, it’s a great place to do drive around and do some tasting. The scenery’s nice, and you’re not far from Hearst Castle and Big Sur. There’s a pretty good barbecue place in town off the 101 as well–nothing that I would encourage a visitng Texan or Okie to stop for but manna from heaven if you are marooned out here.

    A sensible guideline, really. Ban it all, and then relax then ban for those items the local community greatly supports.
