Shamnesty alert: Dems prepare to ram DREAM Act through with cloture vote; Update: Where do your Senators stand?; Update: DREAM Act beat back, cloture vote fails
Update 12:52pm Eastern. Breathe a small sigh of relief. Shamnesty is defeated again. The DREAM Act has been beat back. The vote was 52-44, falling short of the 3/5 threshhold.
You know how the open-borders lobby works, though.
They’ll be back.
No rest.
Update 12:46pm Eastern. Larry Wide Stance Craig votes with the open-borders lobby.
Update 12:33pm Eastern. Vote is underway. Open-borders Republicans voting for the DREAM amnesty nightmare so far…Hagel, Hatch, Hutchison, Lugar, Martinez, and Collins.
Meanwhile, Fred Thompson comes out against the DREAM amnesty.
Update 11:44am Eastern. Here we go. Twenty minutes of debate has just kicked off with Harry Reid whining about the defeat of shamnesty.
Update 9:45am Eastern 10/24. Via USA Today, it looks like Dick Durbin is worried about senators showing up for the vote: “Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the legislation’s chief sponsor, said Tuesday that his biggest challenge was ensuring that supporters, including five senators — four Democrats and one Republican — running for president, make it to the Capitol for the roll call. Another question mark: Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, who are trying to return to California to review wildfire damage…Durbin needs 60 votes to allow the bill to be debated. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said the DREAM Act amounts to a ‘ratification of illegality’ and could provide an incentive for more illegal immigration. ”

Update 7:20am Eastern 10/24. Mark Krikorian has your morning reality-check on the DREAM Act numbers:
In anticipation of today’s cloture vote, DREAM Act supporters have been telling people that the measure would give amnesty to only 60,000 illegal aliens a year; see this, for instance, from the Daily Kos. But even their own think tank disagrees — the Migration Policy Institute has estimated that 360,000 illegals would get amnesty right away, with another 715,000 benefiting in the future, for a total of over 1 million amnestied. Using a different data source, we looked at the same question and estimated that the total number of potential beneficiaries of the amnesty is 2.1 million. What’s more, there are another 1.4 million parents and young siblings of the under-18 amnesty recipients who do not themselves qualify for the amnesty, but whom the government is likely to let stay once their family members get legalized.
Mickey Kaus is paying attention.
Update 7:30pm Eastern. I’m bumping this post to the Lead Story slot and will keep it here through tomorrow’s cloture vote. Where do your Senators stand? Let me know what responses you get. If Republicans had brains, they would put attrition through enforcement first and Just Say No to any new illegal alien magnets.
Noam Askew has a list of possible fence-sitters. You’ll notice a lot of open-borders Republicans on that list.
Sen. Cornyn (R-Texas) sent his statement this evening. Kind of wishy-washy, but at least he comes down on the right side:
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the following statement this evening regarding his intention to vote tomorrow against the motion to proceed to the DREAM Act (S. 2205), which was introduced by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.
“As I have long said, I have a great deal of sympathy for the plight of children who have no moral culpability for being in this country illegally. Congress should continue seeking reasonable and responsible ways they can complete their education and achieve opportunity.
“Unfortunately, the Durbin bill contains a number of gaping loopholes, while failing to address the much larger need for comprehensive immigration reform and the immediate crisis at our borders. For example, it contains no firm requirement for the illegal immigrant to graduate with a degree from an accredited U.S. institution of Higher Education (either a two or four-year institution), it grants them broad access to federal student loans at a time when we are struggling to meet loan needs for our own citizens, and it extends the benefits to adults, rather than focusing on children. Moreover, from a law enforcement perspective, his bill does nothing to prevent fraud, allows certain criminal aliens to qualify for legal status, and ties the hands of law enforcement by severely limiting their access to application information.
“If my colleagues who support this measure are committed to solving America’s immigration crisis and the plight of illegal immigrants, then the focus of this Congress should be on passing a comprehensive reform bill that addresses all of our pressing immigration matters, including securing our broken borders and the needs of American businesses for more workers.”
***
I’ve been keeping you up to date with the latest on the Dems’ attempt (with help from open borders Republicans) to ram the DREAM Act through the Senate. It now looks like a cloture vote is set for tomorrow. Numbers USA reports: “Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) filed to invoke cloture on S. 2205, Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin’s (D-Ill.) new stand-alone DREAM Act amnesty bill. The cloture vote, for which 60 YES votes are necessary to prevent a filibuster on the measure, is set for Wednesday, October 24. Reid is attempting to bring this nightmarish amnesty bill to the floor under Senate Rule XIV without it ever having been debated in committee.”
This morning, I received the following e-mail circulated today by Sen. Durbin’s Judiciary staff:
From: Dodin, Reema (Judiciary-Dem)
Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 9:36 AM
To: All Judiciary Users
Subject: Briefing on the DREAM Act: TODAY at 3pm in SC-6Durbin-Hagel-Lugar DREAM Act Briefing: Tuesday, October 23rd at 3PM in SC-6
Senators Durbin, Hagel and Lugar invite you to a staff briefing on S. 2205, the DREAM Act. A cloture vote on the motion to proceed to the DREAM Act will take place this Wednesday morning (tomorrow). The briefing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23, in SC-6 of the U.S. Capitol.
The DREAM Act would make it possible for certain long-term undocumented immigrant children to go to college or join the military if they meet stringent requirements. It does not address the status of their parents, but simply allows children-who had no choice in the decision to come here-the opportunity to continue their education and give back to the country that they call home.
This bipartisan legislation has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee three times in various forms, and was approved by the Senate last year as part of the comprehensive immigration bill, S. 2611.
The briefing will feature presentations by:
Several students who would benefit from the DREAM Act; Angela Kelley, Director, Immigration Policy Center; Melissa Lazarin, Director of Education Policy, First Focus; Alfred Campos, Federal Lobbyist, National Education Association; Stephanie Grosser, Outreach & Program Coordinator, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society; and Kevin Appleby, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
This event is for Congressional staff only (no press). For more information, please contact Reema in Sen. Durbin’s office at 4-1158.
For more on the DREAM Act, please see the new report from the Immigration Policy Center.
Hope to see you there!

Thanks Michelle for getting this story up top where it belongs! I have a good friend in Orange County, CA, who is worried about his house, and he wants this bill killed as much as I do!
Your many readers have FOUR CHOICES to call their Senators for free, thanks to MM reader Fiona:
800-862-5530
877-851-6437
866-220-0044
866-340-9281
Also, free faxes can be sent from your computer via http://www.numbersusa.com (registration is free, too).
NO EXCUSES! Stop reading for 5 minutes, make your calls, and then get back here and enjoy reading the rest of the news.
Fred 5676, Just received an email from Boxer (I live in California and am a Republican but since I sent her emails to stop the amnesty, well I’m stuck on her mailing list now.) I just sent my thoughts to her.
Representation without taxation equals Dream Act for illegal aliens. Taxation without Representation equals Dream Act passing against our will.
Ansell I bet I have an email that looks alot like yours from way back she was so nice and sent it to me twice! she’s a wanker. wanna see an excerpt if you havnt already?
I’ll just post it again, for your entertainment.
Thank you for contacting me regarding proposed changes to our immigration laws. I appreciate hearing from you.
As you may know, the Senate recently considered S.1639, a bill that would comprehensively reform our immigration system. On June 28, 2007, after weeks of negotiations and debate, the Senate voted against moving the bill forward.
Although comprehensive immigration reform has stalled, certain legislative proposals that were included in S.1639 continue to be considered on their own or as amendments to other bills. These proposals include the DREAM Act, the AgJOBS program, and increased funding for border security.
I believe our immigration problems will only get worse unless we work together to resolve them. Be assured that I will continue to fight to improve our immigration system in a manner that strengthens our border security, protects American workers, and reduces illegal immigration.
Again, thank you for writing to me. Please feel free to contact me again about this or any other issue of concern to you.
Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
Translation,
Bend over further so the smoke I’m blowing up your a$$ makes it in.
If my Senator Mary Landrieu votes for this bill she better be prepared to find another job. Given Governor elect Jindal’s outright win she needs to follow the will of the electorate or else.
also She is yet to respond to my emails and faxes since the first shamnesty
OT. More Democratic donor hijinks.
Well, one of my senators is Ken (Can’t get the border open wide enough for me or show enough compassion to the poor and downtrodden already here) Salazar, so I’m screwed. Allard will probably vote my interests though.
How many times have they tried to ram this through? Four? Five?
Good thing Congress has nothing better to do than to bring up the same thing over and over and over and over again.
That 4 day workweek must be brutal.
this will make it number 5 jim.
Maybe the Mexicana government needs to employ these treasonous “senators” …including hauling them to Mexico.
Heck, if we’re going to waste out tax money, may as well buy them a one way pass.
These people are not true Americans!
Maybe they can do better by leaving this country before we are ruined.
Traitors.
Haven’t heard ONE thing on the news about this……wonder why?
LOL Aj, I got the same one. Funny part is my email to her called for a simple yes or no response and not a prefab consultant driven one.
I sent another one to Senator Turbin using an old mailing address I had in Illinois and his response was very similar. The elite don’t even read their emails or faxes, and awhile back I remember some Dems complaining that they missed a hearing or something because the White House faxed them notice. I think the WH should continue that practice, especially when we go into fighting mode like tonight and tomorrow.
yep John, our Senators are a joke, a very very bad joke.
All I ask for is honesty: “Thanks for your email/fax, due to the amount of mail I receive a may not be able to reply to your concerns. Now go take a long walk of a short pier and leave me alone so I can take bribes and make my family rich at your expense.”
I’d be happy with that. It would be a start to getting these politicians to tell us the truth.
From the dream act portal:
Don’t let up! Wednesday morning is the time to FAX (NumbersUSA), call, and email via your Senators’ web sites.
My condolences! A small price, indeed, if we can defeat this blatant REWARD for illegal behavior. It is NOT amnesty – it is worse. It is a GIANT GIVEAWAY of tax dollars and American citizenship to illegal aliens, encouraging much more illegal immigration in the future. Who has a problem understanding that??
Time to bring out the old tar and feathers, and hang them from the Liberty pole. King Harry and Queen Nancy shall no longer be allowed to tax if they refuse to properly represent those who elected them!
If they refuse to obey the voice of those who elected them, then maybe those who elected them should refuse to pay the bills.
Unbelievable.
From the Dream Act Portal FAQ section (www.dreamact.info):
The bold on “my” Senators / Representatives is mine.
I suppose its too much too hope that our schools teach that if you come here illegally and don’t go through the LEGAL process to become a citizen, you don’t have a Representative or Senator?
Don’t let up! Wednesday morning is the time to FAX (NumbersUSA), call, and email via your Senators’ web sites.
You don’t have to wait until tomorrow to call or fax. All of the Senators have answering machines on either their DC or local offices (most of the voicemails I got in DC tonight are full-I hope it’s our side that’s filled them up). Those free switchboard numbers (see above) work 24/7. And you can fax via NumbersUSA anytime.
Fiona,
No I don’t think they are all full from the “NO” voters, the “YES” voters are posting on the dream act portal website that the voicemail boxes are full and they are hoping its with “YES” voters.
I also got this from their website, so we have to keep calling:
Hallelujah! Lets defeat it and put it to bed once and for all, then put Fred in office.
Don’t trust Sen. Turbin. He’s up for re-election and will say anything now. He’s silent (other than bashing our troops) once he’s in office. Once he’s up for re-election he promises the kitchen sink and a baby in the bath water. It’s clear he’s looking for money from La Raza and then will hide it away after this thing fails. THen he’ll blame the “bigots” for defeating his attempt to offer our tax money to illegals. He needs to be retired. THe time is this upcoming election. He should be target #1 on the nation’s list as one that needs to be thrown out of office. Keep calling folks. This is far too important to let up now. You guys are true patriots.
The Republicans are being played for fools. The Democrats think they can transform America into a South American nation that they will rule forever. But think Ted Kennedy. He reminds me of the Roman Senators who threw away democracy for an Empire. That lasted but 300 years of degradation before falling to unclothed savages. 1000 years of history given away in a single vote. And it spelled the ruin of Rome.
I have faxed, I have called, and I have mailed. Now I will be calling on a full court press in my former home state of Illinois, where the illegal that stole my Social Security number lives and works. I will call for an investigation of Sen Durbin’s activities in regards to public funding uses. I will call for an investigation of USA Patrick Fitzgerald, both from his IG and the GAO, for his refsal to take cases of illegal immigrant identity theft and record low deportation hearings of illegal alien criminals. I will ask any of you in Chicago to connect me with an attoney in Chicago who will file an injunction against the Social Security Administration, preventing all payments to all citizens until they fix the problems of illegal use of the SSN, and the Earning Suspense Fund.
Time to throw the brakes on this train, even if it is going so fast that the train derails.
Five times, five times!
The American people matter only when it is advantageous for them and their “policie.s” The American people have bellowed, “we don’t want amnesty, we want the borders secured” and for what, only to be ignored???
It’s for the children. It’s for illegals, they shouldn’t be punished for what their parents did…well neither should we.
Someone breaks the law and I get to do their time!!!
Enough is enough. We can kill this bill, the time is now!
I called my senators yesterday, did my NumbersUSA faxing this morning. I wish we had more updated and accurate numbers, to know how close things.
Call them!
Call them!
Call them!
Call them!
Call them!
Call them!
SHUT DOWN THE THE SWITCHBOARD!
Just called my senator Brownback’s office and urged to vote no and gave him the new numbers Michelle just posted. Also called McCaskill and Collins and got voicemail both times.
Hope the switchboard is getting overloaded.
While state (NC) votes NO, county wants to build 2 new schools for all the retired people who keep reproducing. Couldn’t possibly be for all those
illegalundocumented families’ offspring. They have proposed a new creative tax to pay for them, too. Idiots! What time is the vote?
If this passes, maybe I will shred all proof of myself and become an alien. Sounds better everyday.
Just to clarify a point which a lot of people seem confused on, you are not restricted to calling your own Senators, and you don’t have to call them only once.
You should call all Senators on the list, and if you have time call them more than once.
You don’t need to spend several minutes giving your reasoning. Simply say “Good Morning. I’m calling to ask Senator X to vote no on cloture for the Dream Act.”
The staffers log the number of calls and the positions Yea or Nay of each one.
I just called quite a few of the senators on the list. PLEASE EVERYONE – CALL AS MANY SENATORS AS POSSIBLE. They are getting a lot of call and we have a chance to kill this bill.
Harry Reid is DINGY
Ok I’ve tried calling the congressional switchboard and got a busy signal. Also tried directly calling my two senators (Dole and Burr from NC) and they were busy as well.
Not sure who is doing all the calling though…our side or theirs?
I hope they arent there to vote, but were doing just fine without them regarding the fires. I received an e-mail from Boxer this morning tooting her horn about the wildfires. Both of them make me want to puke.
I find it interesting that the Democrats care more about the children of illegal aliens than the children of American citizens. Obviously, the DREAM act will cost the taxpayers and that cost will come at the expense of their children.
This is a bait and switch tactic. How can you be so mean to children who didn’t do anything but come here illegally with their parents? The solution is to send all the illegals back until they are willing to abide by US laws. The fact that their children are required to go with them is just a fact of life. Once again, the Democrats (and too many compassionate conservatives) want to accommodate the illegal alien problem rather than solve it.
Not showing up is as good as a vote no.
This must be defeated!
When is the vote scheduled?
Exactly swj, and the Boxer/Feinstein two headed monster smell big bucks coming from the smoke out here.
Yeah, what time is this fiasco????
I would love to know how much money is going into the campaign coffers or freezers of some of these elected officials from pro amnesty groups.
Anytime you see someone going that far out on a limb or doing something politically that makes little to no sense, there is usually a very strong financial incentive behind it.
And the reason I believe that is very relevant today is because it would present clear and convincing evidence that we have elected officials who are selling their influence to foreign interests. It may be “legal” under the present laws, but that information would certainly support making that practice illegal.
Let’s not forget – the campaign coffers of federal representatives are not just for campaign expenses. In the end, what is not spent becomes the personal savings of that particilar individual.
So what they do not spend, they keep, even after paying family members a salary on the payroll that counts as a legitimate campaign expense. Call me a cynic, but allowing this type of practice is nothing more than a thinly velied method of allowing bribes and kickbacks to be washed through a campaign kitty. As long as it does not go to them directly, then it is OK.
Remember John Kerry? The Dems chided him for not turning the leftovers from his presidential campaign to the party. Gary Condit? As I recall, the Dems were upset that he kept the $4 million or so stashed away in his campaign coffers.
Follow the money. Should be interesting.
Per NumbersUSA,
Thanks!
If I have to, I’ll run against Durbin myself.
This hack will NOT get re-elected. Come hell or high water, Illinois is done with him.
Feinstein is on the tele with LA local news but not sure where she is.
she’s being spoken to by a reporter? Is the sky hazy at all?
If so, unless she takes a private jet, I REALLY doubt she’ll be “home” in time for the vote.
Just ran through the list, and was able to get through to most senators no problem.
More calls!
Corporations and unions. They are the ones pushing this and buying Congress.
I wish I could get my hands on a way to actually speak to durbin.
I would love for him to actually hear my words…
But I’m calling his office none-the-less
Geez I wish Rudy Giuliani had said this.
Contacted my Sen.s yesterday, I hope they are coming back to Ca. for the fires, they love the DREAM act and every other opportunity to legalize illegality.
Senataors Cochran and Tester are NO’s.
Crapweasel Martinez from Florida does not know how he is voting. If he is that confused shouldn’t he not be re-elected?
One thing that cracked me up during Feinsteins call she said no-one has called her asking for anything, meaning local officials the Gov. etc. “and I know them all quite well” she said.
Thats because this machine of an evac. / response is running just fine thank you without her sticking her nose in it.
I’m hoping both Ca. Senators are here, but stay out of this disaster, we dont need you!
KEEP CALLING.
MAKE THEM LISTEN.
WHO DO THEY THINK THEY WORK FOR?
Lugar’s office in DC is not accepting calls. I have also noticed that his staffer’s no longer ask for your name and address if you call and criticize Dick. So he no longer cares if Hoosier’s disagree with him. He is obviously in his last term, and focused on building a legacy as some kind of statesman. De-linked from the voters, the real Dick emerges. And the real Dick is an idiot and a democrat in disguise.
*UPDATE – CNSnews – DREAM Act Won’t Spark More Illegal Immigration, Durbin Says
http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewNation.asp?Page=/Nation/archive/200710/NAT20071024a.html
Mentions Michelle in article.
#142 Lindsey
Martinez knows exactly how he’s voting he lives in the illegal alien paradise.
You know it is way too easy to get through on these lines. I don’t thnk enough people are calling.
I keep calling the Capital and Mel Martinez’s office. Martinez’s answering machine for 2 days has been full, he is determined not to take calls on this.
This makes me furious….
I think everyone should keep calling the switchboard and jam it.
Sen. Imhofe called it right – another stealth amnesty POS.
I can’t wait to see this piece of crap go down in flames and listen to Durbin and Reid whine about hate radio.
Reid says he lives in Nevada and there is a lot of Illegal immigrant gangs…..then he goes on to suggest the DREAM act will give these “young people” a chance to take another path in life. What nonsense! They are already allowed into our schools…but they choose not to go! GOOD! I’m not sure I’d want a bunch of MS-13 gang members in class anyway!
Durbin: “kids without a country”.
This is just ridiculous.
He forgot to add;
“These kids “without” a country …so we are GIVING them ours.”
The least we can do……..
shoot me and put me outta my misery here if this passes.
Careful on that “corporations and unions”….none of the “manufacturing” corporations I’ve worked for along the way support this. Not to say certain industries aren’t for it – but mfg corps I don’t think so. The mfg corps I know see entitlements as generally a bad thing for their businesses.
Unions probably (and I can’t speak from any real knowledge here) see the illegals as easier pickings for future ?present? membership. Once beholden, always beholden.
“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language… and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
Theodore Roosevelt 1907
La Raza is funded by American corporations to the tune of about twenty million per year. Wal Mart, for instance, kicks in about $600,000.
No doubt, but they love the idea of driving down wages, and they love the idea of lots of new consumers.
Durbin: “Constructive conversation” with Hutchison”
Oh s…!!!!!!
Calling Lugar’s DC office I got a recording that said no one was available to answer and I should leave a message, but then the line was disconnected. So I called his local office in Valparaiso, IN. Same deal, but with a message that the mailbox was full.
I wondered if ANY of Lugar’s phones were being answered, so I tried Indianapolis next. I was automatically put on hold, but then a live human being actually got on the line.
After I expressed my disagreement and frustration with the senator politely but pointedly we had a brief, pithy discussion on the senator’s immigration activities.
In response to one of my points regarding the overwhelming support among voters for enforcement of current law, the aide stated that the senator supports enforcement of current law. I told him that I did not believe that passing new laws which excused and even rewarded prior criminal violations of the immigration laws could be construed as support for enforcement of current law.
At that point the aide lost interest in further discussion, but he did ask for my name and address. First time since June that I disagreed with the senator and they asked for my address. Guess he didn’t get the memo.
And yes, during that period I did call the senator’s office to express support for one of his positions. That time they did ask for my address, and I got a canned letter later on thanking me for my call.
Sununu a no
Lead by example, here is my email to my senator Barack Obama,
you can read my whole piece here
NOT THE CHIIIIILLLLLDDDDDRRRRREEEENNN!!!!!!!
Durbin is a disgrace.
Is Dick about to cry?
Aren’t there any schools and universities in countries other than the US?
Durbin is nothing but CACA.
I don’t think “children” in college…..18 years or older are kids….they are adults.
Duh.
Pontificating…over
I suppose its too much too hope that our schools teach that if you come here illegally and don’t go through the LEGAL process to become a citizen, you don’t have a Representative or Senator?
Ah, but the underlying reason for the DREAM act is to build a permantent underclass constinuency completly devoted and loyal to the Democrat masters that provide for the. The Dems will represent anyone that they perceive will and do vote for them, illegal, criminal, dead, entitlement recipients. So to build an unbeatable voter bloc – the DREAM act!
Exactly hawkeye! Nachos in their pockets is all it is.
