Shamnesty alert: Dems prepare to ram DREAM Act through with cloture vote; Update: Where do your Senators stand?; Update: DREAM Act beat back, cloture vote fails
Update 12:52pm Eastern. Breathe a small sigh of relief. Shamnesty is defeated again. The DREAM Act has been beat back. The vote was 52-44, falling short of the 3/5 threshhold.
You know how the open-borders lobby works, though.
They’ll be back.
No rest.
Update 12:46pm Eastern. Larry Wide Stance Craig votes with the open-borders lobby.
Update 12:33pm Eastern. Vote is underway. Open-borders Republicans voting for the DREAM amnesty nightmare so far…Hagel, Hatch, Hutchison, Lugar, Martinez, and Collins.
Meanwhile, Fred Thompson comes out against the DREAM amnesty.
Update 11:44am Eastern. Here we go. Twenty minutes of debate has just kicked off with Harry Reid whining about the defeat of shamnesty.
Update 9:45am Eastern 10/24. Via USA Today, it looks like Dick Durbin is worried about senators showing up for the vote: “Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the legislation’s chief sponsor, said Tuesday that his biggest challenge was ensuring that supporters, including five senators — four Democrats and one Republican — running for president, make it to the Capitol for the roll call. Another question mark: Democratic Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, who are trying to return to California to review wildfire damage…Durbin needs 60 votes to allow the bill to be debated. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said the DREAM Act amounts to a ‘ratification of illegality’ and could provide an incentive for more illegal immigration. ”

Update 7:20am Eastern 10/24. Mark Krikorian has your morning reality-check on the DREAM Act numbers:
In anticipation of today’s cloture vote, DREAM Act supporters have been telling people that the measure would give amnesty to only 60,000 illegal aliens a year; see this, for instance, from the Daily Kos. But even their own think tank disagrees — the Migration Policy Institute has estimated that 360,000 illegals would get amnesty right away, with another 715,000 benefiting in the future, for a total of over 1 million amnestied. Using a different data source, we looked at the same question and estimated that the total number of potential beneficiaries of the amnesty is 2.1 million. What’s more, there are another 1.4 million parents and young siblings of the under-18 amnesty recipients who do not themselves qualify for the amnesty, but whom the government is likely to let stay once their family members get legalized.
Mickey Kaus is paying attention.
Update 7:30pm Eastern. I’m bumping this post to the Lead Story slot and will keep it here through tomorrow’s cloture vote. Where do your Senators stand? Let me know what responses you get. If Republicans had brains, they would put attrition through enforcement first and Just Say No to any new illegal alien magnets.
Noam Askew has a list of possible fence-sitters. You’ll notice a lot of open-borders Republicans on that list.
Sen. Cornyn (R-Texas) sent his statement this evening. Kind of wishy-washy, but at least he comes down on the right side:
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the following statement this evening regarding his intention to vote tomorrow against the motion to proceed to the DREAM Act (S. 2205), which was introduced by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.
“As I have long said, I have a great deal of sympathy for the plight of children who have no moral culpability for being in this country illegally. Congress should continue seeking reasonable and responsible ways they can complete their education and achieve opportunity.
“Unfortunately, the Durbin bill contains a number of gaping loopholes, while failing to address the much larger need for comprehensive immigration reform and the immediate crisis at our borders. For example, it contains no firm requirement for the illegal immigrant to graduate with a degree from an accredited U.S. institution of Higher Education (either a two or four-year institution), it grants them broad access to federal student loans at a time when we are struggling to meet loan needs for our own citizens, and it extends the benefits to adults, rather than focusing on children. Moreover, from a law enforcement perspective, his bill does nothing to prevent fraud, allows certain criminal aliens to qualify for legal status, and ties the hands of law enforcement by severely limiting their access to application information.
“If my colleagues who support this measure are committed to solving America’s immigration crisis and the plight of illegal immigrants, then the focus of this Congress should be on passing a comprehensive reform bill that addresses all of our pressing immigration matters, including securing our broken borders and the needs of American businesses for more workers.”

I’ve been keeping you up to date with the latest on the Dems’ attempt (with help from open borders Republicans) to ram the DREAM Act through the Senate. It now looks like a cloture vote is set for tomorrow. Numbers USA reports: “Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) filed to invoke cloture on S. 2205, Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin’s (D-Ill.) new stand-alone DREAM Act amnesty bill. The cloture vote, for which 60 YES votes are necessary to prevent a filibuster on the measure, is set for Wednesday, October 24. Reid is attempting to bring this nightmarish amnesty bill to the floor under Senate Rule XIV without it ever having been debated in committee.”
This morning, I received the following e-mail circulated today by Sen. Durbin’s Judiciary staff:
From: Dodin, Reema (Judiciary-Dem)
Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2007 9:36 AM
To: All Judiciary Users
Subject: Briefing on the DREAM Act: TODAY at 3pm in SC-6Durbin-Hagel-Lugar DREAM Act Briefing: Tuesday, October 23rd at 3PM in SC-6
Senators Durbin, Hagel and Lugar invite you to a staff briefing on S. 2205, the DREAM Act. A cloture vote on the motion to proceed to the DREAM Act will take place this Wednesday morning (tomorrow). The briefing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23, in SC-6 of the U.S. Capitol.
The DREAM Act would make it possible for certain long-term undocumented immigrant children to go to college or join the military if they meet stringent requirements. It does not address the status of their parents, but simply allows children-who had no choice in the decision to come here-the opportunity to continue their education and give back to the country that they call home.
This bipartisan legislation has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee three times in various forms, and was approved by the Senate last year as part of the comprehensive immigration bill, S. 2611.
The briefing will feature presentations by:
Several students who would benefit from the DREAM Act; Angela Kelley, Director, Immigration Policy Center; Melissa Lazarin, Director of Education Policy, First Focus; Alfred Campos, Federal Lobbyist, National Education Association; Stephanie Grosser, Outreach & Program Coordinator, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society; and Kevin Appleby, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
This event is for Congressional staff only (no press). For more information, please contact Reema in Sen. Durbin’s office at 4-1158.
For more on the DREAM Act, please see the new report from the Immigration Policy Center.
Hope to see you there!

get Reid the hell out !
Reid, SHUTUP
Champagne all around!!
you mean stfu!
-9 R, +2 D
Very close.
I just moved to New York from Alabama… I traded Sessions for Schumer and Clinton. I could just cry.
IT FAILED 52 -44
Now Reid can do some REAL work.
Amen. Why he, Sam Switchba, uh, Wetba, uh, Brownback continue to prefer to pander to illegals must be linked to business interests from whom they receive support, and will probably work for after their careers in the senate are over. None to soon for me.
My nerves can’t take much more of this!
Champagne all around for a toast to Michelle and her crew!!!
How much did La Raza pay these losers?
Pulchritudinous Patriot:
Your right Patriot…she is going to run….but she ain’t gettin’ my vote after this sad display!
mine either flenser and sorry for getting snippy yesterday.
Anyone have an idea why the pulled this stunt?
Didnt the dems still need to over ride the veto in the house ?
He’s been in politics too long. He doesn’t know HOW to do real work. Career politicians are just another welfare class.
I think that it is safe to say that the Republican party has left me. Ronald Reagan had the Republicans to turn to when the Dems left him, but who do I have to turn to party wise?
The dumbing down of America seems to be working, because I really don’t think that the average American really cares.
I’m so disgusted! I’m a single mom, working my arse off to make ends meet, I pay my taxes and I have to send my kids to private school because the public schools here in Texas are so over run with Mexicans that my American born children don’t get a proper education. I had to put my kids in a private Pre-K class because I didn’t qualify (read: I’m Anglo and speak English) to put them in the public Pre-K program.
I won’t enumerate all here, it’s beating a dead horse, we all know what I’m talking about.
So what’s it going to take to take our country back? Another revolution?
Sorry for the rant Michelle. I’m just so frustrated!
To run with the idea that republicans are anti children even if they are illegal ones
Two words: TERM LIMITS
On October 24th, 2007 at 12:56 pm, Surveyor said:
Nor mine. I’ll stay home first.
Another nail biter. Stay sharp folks.
the vote for cloture FAILED just a few moments ago.
Shamnesty fails.
Another failure for the vaunted lame majority!!
Thankfully, we narrowly avoided amnesty again.
Nice to see Lott and Brownback voting to give freebies to illegals, though.
Can for the love of pete this nonsense stay dead?!!
DAN PATRICK FOR LT. GOVERNOR OF TEXAS!
Calling the Repuclican leaders that send fund raising requests. They will not get a dime this time around.
Now hopefully these pin heads will just let it go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trent Not-A-Lott needs to retire, and yesterday.
“Oh, open borders, I thought it was open stalls.”
Maybe its a good thing a lot of republicans are retiring. We can build a better party
No hard feelings, aj.
Feinstein talking about these fires now on c-span is like attending a quantum psysics lecture by gomer pyle.
Not only term limits, but limits to how many times you can serve in ANY elective capacity.
How many pols have served in so many levels (City Council, State Rep, etc.) that even with term limits, they can stay in some office for nearly a lifetime. I have come to dislike career politicions who play on this merry-go-round.
I would prefer to see fresh faces, who see a need to serve at a particular level, give a few years of service and then go return to the private workforce.
Just my point of view.
Better her than incoherent Boxer. Oh, never mind, Boxer’ll get her face time too, if she hasn’t already. Thankfully remotes have mute buttons : )
That’s too hilarious!
#221 - John: Second that. If there were term limits, there might be some less desire to pander for votes this way. At least that would be my hope
“Grindhouse” anyone?
Boxer missed the vote , good! shes out here sticking her nose in the fires and the thing is no-one has asked for these two witches help. lmao.
Give it two weeks, it’ll be back.
#235 Hawkeye - yep. I don’t think our Founding Fathers ever envisioned a “ruling class”.
AJ #234, she’s a pyle alright.
Mark this victory as yet another proud day in our country’s history and should replace Cinco de Mayo celebrations!!!
Hopefully, but in the meantime, some of them will show their true colors and dump all over conservatives.
#242 That’s why they wrote the constitution the way they did and it is very clear. They envisioned NO ruling class such as a King!
I would like to know how much of the constitution these pin heads know and understand?
Except thats my birthday, so I be rockin!
It will keep coming back as often as the Dems think is possible. They will try to wear the opposition down until it finally passes in one form or another.
We must stay resolute and continue to keep close watch on this CONgress.
Thank you Michelle for keeping us aware.
Thanks to everyone who is calling Kay Bailey Hutchison. I’ve been trying for an hour, and her direct line is busy!
I’ve lived in Texas my whole life. The first senator I ever voted for was Hutchison. She is planning on running for governor, and it’ll be a cold day in hell before I’d vote for her.
Only a few tidbits they can ignore, misuse or contort into a 30-second sound bite to serve their purpose.
A thought on these representatives not running for office after their current term: it looks like they are still allowed to receive campaign contributions. Why?
Juan McCain voted AYE
I sent the following e-mail to my worthless Senator, Senor Martinez:
You can kiss my future vote goodbye. No hablo “Mel Martinez”, Sénor Turncoat!
I never vote Democrat, but I’ll be d#mned before I vote for you again. You and Jorgé W. Bush conned me in 2004 for voting for you, and now I need a shower to get that feeling of disgust off of me. Just leave the pesos on the dresser, Sénor Martinez.
Neither you nor your party can expect a friggin’ dime from me in the future, you sell-out!
Guess he didn’t see enough light.
Jerk.
As an aside, it is truly amazing that the Republicans cry about not getting the level of contributions they expect or need, while continuing to alienate their base by supporting the Dream Act.
Let’s see, you want me to contribute to elect people who are going to do vote against the issues I support, and vote for the issues I am against?
Looking at the rollcall, I don’t know how we escaped here. We got pretty lucky I think.
Oh, AJ. We are so cut from the same cloth! You have a habit of taking the words Right out of me mouth!
With the two witches, it is utterly pointless to contact them-i’ve tried. They could give two piles about any one elses opinions other than their base.
According to the rollcall, he did not vote. Unless he pulled a Switchback.
At the time of the Constitutional convention, it was assumed that elected officials would serve briefly and then return to their businesses/farms. At that time, there was no campaigning or career options in politics. Many did just that. Today, it is a “me first, party second, country third” philosophy that reigns supreme. A statesman is no more. I would never consider running for office. My morals and ethics are too high. So, today, another mistake was voted down, and nothing has been accomplished in immigration reform, except speeches and finger-pointing.
The roll call is here
Last night, I spent some time at this web site - a strong proponent of the DREAM Act:
I just checked back to enjoy some whine, and guess what?
I wanted some whine!!
On another thread I voiced my complete disgust with Kay Bailey - & yes, many are shouting out her name for governor. I have promised to make it my personal mission to help defeat her from holding any other elected office. Cannot begin to tell you how disappointed her former supporters are in her lack of judgement.
IMHO, when Feinstein/Boxer/Pelosi show up in SOCAL, suit ‘em up and throw them on the firelines. They must be good at something.
Happy hour started early for Kennedy I see.
rather throw them (in) the fire. seriously.
Something is up. I believe Reid/Durbin et all have something else up their immediate sleeve. And, what was Hutchinson up to? Anybody know?
When these rats screwed us in 84 we found out after the fact we had indeed been screwed.
Now with the internet and c-span these rats can’t break wind in Washington without the smell quickly spreading from sea to shining sea.
McSlain is toast. I thik i’ll give him a new nickname: McCant.
I have not shopped at Walmart for months now after realizing they contribute to La Raza and are pro-illegal immigration. Not that I shopped there often, but when I do need stuff like that I go elsewhere–my own personal boycott when I realized they’d buddied up with La Raza.
When I can I buy American (and bought American made furniture from American wood this summer—not so easy to do anymore as the big companies from NC outsource to China). It is increasingly difficult to find the label: Made in the USA.
Pay attention to what is going on in the “global” market. When I hear the words “global” or “bipartisan” I now worry that it is not good for our country.
Here is an article on these lines of the power of Wal-Mart:
