SoCal arson suspect killed, another arrested; Santiago Fire to be declared an arson

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 24, 2007 04:56 PM

Via the LATimes:

Amid worries of new blazes adding to the firestorm already afflicting the region, a man in Hesperia has been arrested on suspicion of arson, and police reported shooting and killing another arson suspect after chasing him out of scrub behind Cal State San Bernardino.

Law enforcement officials said today that they didn’t know whether either of the men had started any of the more than a dozen large fires that have devastated Southern California in recent days, including the nearby Lake Arrowhead blaze. The brush fire in Hesperia was quickly extinguished by residents.

Investigators have said that at least two of the huge wildfires, one in Orange County and the other in Temecula, were the work of arsonists.

The confrontation that ended in the shooting death started about 6 p.m. Tuesday when San Bernardino university police spotted a man in a rural area of flood channels and scrub near the campus. University police tried to detain the man, but he got into his car and fled, authorities said.

“We don’t know whether he was an arsonist,” said Lt. Scott Patterson of the San Bernardino Police Department, which joined the pursuit. “What was related by the Cal State police was that they tried to contact him as a suspicious person in a brush area. Things being how they are, there was a suspicion that he could be an arsonist.”

The area near the campus had been affected by the massive Old Fire of 2003, Patterson said, adding that “it’s very fire-prone. It’s an area that would be very devastated if a fire were to start there.”

The man, whose identity has not been released, drove north on Waterman Avenue and up a dirt fire road into the foothills. When officers tried to take him into custody, the man began to ram officers’ vehicles, Patterson said. Officers shot and killed him.

Elsewhere:

CBS News has learned a task force of agencies, including the FBI, ATF, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the California Department of Forestry will announce shortly that the massive Santiago Canyon Fire – which has caused an estimated $10 million in damage – is being officially declared an arson, and a $50,000 reward is being offered to find the arsonist.

Investigators have identified two separate “points of origin” where they believe the fire was set, CBS News has learned. FBI agents secured the scene to “maintain its integrity.”

The Santiago Fire has burned about 19,200 acres east of Irvine, officials said, and it is around 30 percent contained. Six homes and eight outbuildings have been destroyed, with another eight homes and 12 outbuildings damaged. Four firefighters have been injured fighting the blaze and about 3,000 people evacuated.

California authorities and FBI agents searched a home Wednesday as part of the arson investigation.

The search was conducted in Orange County by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, the official said.

The thought crossed my mind, too.

Since 9/11, I’ve often thought that multiple attacks of various types, in multiple, varied areas of the country, could possibly terrorize at least as much as, if not more than, one grand attack on one landmark.

Just ask the Filipinos, Israelis, Iraqis, Nigerians, Indians….

I am in no way attributing the arson fires to terrorists; I am in possession of no information.

However, I am stating that we would be foolish not to rule out terrorism as a possibility in the case of any suspicious event.

They were complaining about the festive attitude and all the food, etc. (all donated, voluteer, etc), but at the Super Dome they were poor black people and the Bush admin. didn’t care.
I’ve heard this before. San Diego is a relatively conservative town, and it is marked by the rabid liberals as a place to “take down.” They hate San Diego! I remember when we had a Republican Convention there, and that was all the MSM could say…how conservative San Diego is.
The fact is that the response to this immense emergency is well coordinated because of the 2003 fire (lessons learned), large military family population (well organized people with discipline), and it’s a conservative town!… my adopted home town. My wife’s there now taking care of her elderly parents in La Mesa. She drove down to the stadium last night (I’ll always call it Jack Murphy Stadium!) to donate comfort items (toothpaste, tooth brushes soap, etc.) She was turned away because they had plenty.

They’re not having electrical storms out there, they’re not having any storms at all. What’s causing it? But then the answer popped into my head, as easily as the answer about torture. The two groups of Arab males were discovered by patrol guards from Willcox, Arizona. “These guys didn’t speak Spanish,” said one field agent, “and they were speaking to each other in Arabic. It’s ridiculous that we don’t take this more seriously. We’re told not to say a thing to the media.” A colleague told the paper: “All the men had brand-new clothing and the exact same cut of moustache.” Local ranchers have also reported a rise in the sightings of large groups of young males.

Last month, border patrol agents at McAllen airport, Texas, arrested a woman believed to be Pakistani, who was carrying a false South African passport. The woman, Farida Ahmed, is still being questioned by the FBI. She was travelling to New York, and admitted to having illegally crossed the Mexican border. She was still carrying a pair of wet jeans in her travel bag….

“My concern is, are we serious about terrorism?” said Sheriff Jernigan. “Or about homeland security? Because we’re turning loose non-Mexicans by the thousands. Entering this country illegally is a crime, and we’re turning our heads and ignoring it.”

The man, whose identity has not been released, drove north on Waterman Avenue and up a dirt fire road into the foothills. When officers tried to take him into custody, the man began to ram officers’ vehicles, Patterson said. Officers shot and killed him.

The officer is a hero for his action.

I should wait to judge, but if the name of the arsonist is not released for a day or so they are usually not American sounding names, ya know? Remember the Salt Lake Trolley Square Mall massacre? The guy who ran over the NC students? Or even the guy in California who ran over pedestrians. It took a long time to release the name, and not to notify next of kin…The list grows all the time, and the MSM are slow to release names if they are ethnic sounding (or if they are illegal aliens).

We’ll see if the guy is an apple-pie eatin’ NASCAR type who likes to play with matches while munching on pork rinds. Regardless, it is likely that the terrorists are taking notes for future Santa Ana winds.

what a nice bear feller you are for feeding the homeless.

i feel bad. on fridays, we have so many left overs at work (bagles etc). So I pack them up….and then run around hucking them at homeless peeps. I know it sounds terrible. But, hey, its a free meal, right???

See I have a queezy stomach. and they don’t smell so good. Then there is one guy that yells a lot. I figure, maybe they’ll deal with my bad throws if I give them the free food, a smile and a wave.

don’t need to become din-din anytime soon. tsk tsk…east bay girls sure are spazzes.
