Hollywood’s war on the war

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 26, 2007 05:01 PM

Mike Fumento looks at Hollyweird’s war on the war on terror.

In 2004, I hit on similar themes in my column, “The lost patriots of Hollywood.” I asked folks to share their favorite WWII movies and scenes. Go back and you’ll read some terrific comments here.

Mine: I’ll never forget the hanging scene at the school in Back to Bataan. Watched the movie when I was 8. Still get choked up thinking about the principal’s body and the American flag.

Feel free to share your own.

Let’s hope the Lefties don’t ruin “Lone Survivor.”

I doubt that those movies will change anyone’s mind. The mind set one goes in with will be the same when they come out. That’s assuming one bothers to see them in the first place.

actually the public is pretty much rejecting the anti-war movies … check out the current box office numbers … even a re-release of a 14 year old movie (Nightmare Before Christmas) beat some of them …

It’s a sad commentary when Hollywood makes films that grasp for profitability on the hope that the anti-American foreign market will bail them out.

Either they completely misjudged the American demand for this kind of self-flagellation, or they’re making movies specifically for foreign audiences with the US market as an afterthought.

Or maybe both. In either case, from a capitalist perspective, some studio execs should be updating their resumes right about now.

It’s too soon. The successful Vietnam movies didn’t come out until about 1978, 3 yrs after the war ended.

We are still at war. No “war on Islam flick” will do well now. They can watch at home on CNN, Fox, and MSNBC.

    Check out:
World Trade Center- patriotic 9/11 themed film directed by Oliver Stone.

Libertas has several articles on this. With links to other articles.

Hollywood has mostly been making movies for “liberals” for years, they’re so parochial and insular that they no longer have any understanding of the rest of America, or, for that matter, any other audience.

By the way, movies that flop in the heartland generally don’t do well overseas either.

I know its not a WWII movie but The Lost City, - (you can view the trailer on the link) certainly does not fit the stereotypical hollywood mold (e.g. kiss fest to Castro, Che, Evita etc.).

It took Andy Garcia 13 years to make. It was based on his life story in Cuba. It hardly got play time…big surprise…bad reviews from critics and no funding - he did this movie all on his own.

I really enjoyed it. But better yet, it really does not paint those thugs mentioned above in a very good light…so its pretty acurate.

Just a little Friday OT movie pic from Feebs.

We watched Ken Burns’ The War on PBS and thought it outstanding. Far cry from what goes on today. The Great Escape, The Winds of War and War & Remembrance are my favorite war movies.

My Mom lost her first husband, (who fought in WWII) when he was killed in Korea. My Dad lost two friends on the Bataan Death March. My Dad served in Korea. My first serious boyfriend fought in Vietnam. My husband served in the army. I have always been very aware of the sacrifices of our military and extremely moved by movies that showed the valor of our fighting troops.

I loathe the Hollywood of today and hold them in the utmost contempt. To make these kind of movies while we are still at war is appalling, especially when Hollywood is not making any positive movies about our soldiers. Crapweasels is a good term for Hollywood. My husband has another one, but it is not used in polite society.

It is something that every American owes those who have fought and sacrificed in order to preserve their freedom to be sleaze bag, hollywierd “useful idiots”, if they so desire!

My favorite war movie is “Patton.” In fact, I saw it while serving in Vietnam and it gave this draftee greater respect for the military.

About a month ago or so, Jim Pinkerton in Newsday compared this year 2007 to 1971. Then as now, Hollywood was churning out flicks that badmouthed the military and badmouthed our country, and loony lefties were going off the deep end just like now. As a result of this drumbeat, the Democrats nominated McGovern the following year, who got buried by Nixon even though we all knew that Nixon was corrupt.

We watched Ken Burns’ The War on PBS and thought it outstanding. Far cry from what goes on today.
I had a young person in their late teens who said I had no idea all that happened!

almeehan, I used to really respect educators. No more. IMO, the majority of them rank down there with journalists. History is not considered important, they rage about being held accountable for job performance, indoctrination of students to political preferences and unfortunately, no desire for input of parents. I spent 8 years teaching and saw the arrogance and ignorance of far too many teachers. What I read about today in our schools and universities sickens me. The truly good ones are few and far between anymore. Cynical, yes. I am glad my kids are grown.

    Michelle,
Two that come to mind are:
    1. A Bridge Too Far, both the “Hail Mary, Full of Grace” river crossing scene with Redford, and the scene when the British officer says: “The plan is called Operation Market Garden…I’d like to think of this as one of those American Western films…and the Germans? Well naturally, they’re the bad guys!”

    2. Saving Private Ryan
Bible quoting sniper, Private Daniel Jackson:

    Psalm 25
    Psalm 144

There’s nothing like peace through superior firepower, and the Good Book.

    I couldn’t resist…

Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. Men, all this stuff you’ve heard about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball player, the toughest boxer. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That’s why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.

Now, an Army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The bilious bastards who wrote that stuff about individuality for the Saturday Evening Post don’t know anything more about real battle than they do about fornicating.

We have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit and the best men in the world. You know, by God I actually pity those poor bastards we’re going up against. By God, I do. We’re not just going to shoot the bastards, we’re going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We’re going to murder those lousy Hun bastards by the bushel.

Now, some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you’ll chicken out under fire. Don’t worry about it. I can assure you that you will all do your duty. The Nazis are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill their blood. Shoot them in the belly. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend’s face, you’ll know what to do.

Now there’s another thing I want you to remember. I don’t want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position. We’re not holding anything. Let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we’re not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy. We’re going to hold onto him by the nose and we’re going to kick him in the ass. We’re going to kick the hell out of him all the time and we’re gonna go through him like crap through a goose.

There’s one thing that you men will be able to say when you get back home. And you may thank God for it. Thirty years from now when you’re sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what did you do in the great World War II, you won’t have to say, “Well, I shoveled shit in Louisiana.”

Alright now, you sons-of-bitches, you know how I feel. Oh, and I will be proud to lead you wonderful guys into battle – anytime, anywhere.

    That’s all.

    -General George S. Patton Jr.

The Great Escape, Patton, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan…all great WWII movies.

Dont forget another oft-forgotten classic, “Twelve O’Clock High” with Gregory Peck. More of a psychological slant on the flyboys doing bombing raids over Germany out of British airfields. Great movie. If you’ve never seen it, give it a look.

My mom had three sons in WWII - the little flag in the window had 3 blue stars, then 1 silver and 2 blue, then 1 gold and 2 blue. The story of my oldest brother and crew would make an awesome movie. We never knew what really happened until Japanese war records showed a direct hit on a submarine the same day radio comunications were lost. Today our daughter and son-in-law (a former Marine) have the same concerns while our grandson is in Iraq again. Let’s get out some yellow ribbons and put them everywhere!

Gettysburg - where Sgt. Buster Killrain gives his personal reason for fighting the civil war:

Colonel, darling, you’re a lovely man. I see a vast difference between us, yet I admire you, lad. You’re an idealist, praise be. The truth is, Colonel… There is no “divine spark”. There’s many a man alive of no more of value than a dead dog. Believe me. When you’ve seen them hang each other the way I have back in the Old Country. Equality? What I’m fighting for is to prove I’m a better man than many of them. Where have you seen this “divine spark” in operation, Colonel? Where have you noted this magnificent equality? No two things on Earth are equal or have an equal chance. Bit a leaf, not a tree. There’s many a man worse than me, and some better… But I don’t think race or country matters a damn. What matters, Colonel… Is justice. Which is why I’m here. I’ll be treated as I deserve, not as my father deserved. I’m Kilrain… And I damn all gentlemen. There is only one aristocracy… And that is right here.
    [points to his head]

And that’s why we’ve got to win this war.

Looks like I missed some good posting with other family duties last night … a granddaughter’s first birthday party was on the schedule …

Saw a couple of my favorites listed above … so I’ll just add D-Day, The Big Red One, The Bridge Over the River Kwai.

No “Duke” out there today, but I tend to like Denzel Washington (his son is active duty Marine) and if Samuel L. Jackson is in it I usually gotta at least give it a look-see.

For those that don’t know about Lee Marvin, he was a Marine in WWII serving in the Pacific theater, was wounded in the Battle of Saipan, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery …
