Update: Mike Chertoff works himself up into a strong lather over the FEMA FUBAR:

The homeland security chief on Saturday tore into his own employees for staging a phony news conference at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“I think it was one of the dumbest and most inappropriate things I’ve seen since I’ve been in government,” Michael Chertoff said.

“I have made unambiguously clear, in Anglo-Saxon prose, that it is not to ever happen again and there will be appropriate disciplinary action taken against those people who exhibited what I regard as extraordinarily poor judgment,” he added.

Asked specifically if he planned to fire anyone at FEMA, which is part of his department, Chertoff declined to say, citing personnel rules.

“There will be appropriate discipline,” he told reporters at a news conference with New York’s governor where they announced an agreement on a driver’s license plan.

Yes, Chertoff has the nerve to call FEMA dumb while he was striking a DHS deal with New York to allow illegal aliens to get driver’s licenses.

Send me your suggestions or leave comments below.

Allah has the video of the nation’s stupidest bureaucracy faking a news conference.

Watch it!

More:

The U.S. government’s main disaster-response agency apologized on Friday for having its employees pose as reporters in a hastily called news conference on California’s wildfires that no news organizations attended.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, still struggling to restore its image after the bungled handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, issued the apology after The Washington Post published details of the Tuesday briefing.

“We can and must do better, and apologize for this error in judgment,” FEMA deputy administrator Harvey Johnson, who conducted the briefing, said in a statement. “Our intent was to provide useful information and be responsive to the many questions we have received.”

No actual reporter attended the news conference in person, agency spokesman Aaron Walker said.

A spokeswoman for Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who has authority over FEMA, called the incident “inexcusable and offensive to the secretary.”

“We have made it clear that stunts such as this will not be tolerated or repeated,” spokeswoman Laura Keehner said. She said the department was looking at the possibility of reprimanding those responsible.

Unbelievable.

No, entirely believable. The spirit of Michael Brown lives on. Remember?

    I believe by using the expression
    “Anglo-Saxon” prose”, Mr. Chertoff was being a bit sarcastic.

    The Angles and the Saxons came from Engeln (or Aengeln) and Saxony, and Anglo-Saxon is, I believe Old English, which is very similar to Old German.

    Saying that someone can use only “Anglo-Saxon” words when he speaks, or can understand only “Anglo-Saxon” words;

    is similar to saying that someone cannot understand any words that have more than two syllables;

    is similar to saying to someone, “I’m gonna tell ya in language so simple that even YOU will understand it!”.

    It is a not-so-veiled sarcastic barb.
    (’Course, it ignores the fact the fact that there are plenty of multisyllabic words in German).

    I’ve always thought that this indicates that the speaker using this expression feels that the person he is addressing isn’t bright enough to understand and use the numerous English words that have a Latin (either directly, or by way of French) or Greek origin.

    CHERTOFF is a disgrace to us all. Time after time he betrays the security of this nation. This last time where he’s rubber-stamping New York’s effort to issue driver’s licenses to illegal criminal aliens abhorrent and unacceptable.

    What really bothers me is the absence of rage against New York! Neighboring states should be blockading their borders with New York and the Federal Government should immediately freeze all Federal money that is going to the state.

    The violations of decency continue to grow worse and worse, yet there’s little discernable outcry against them.

    Here it is folks…right from the horses mouth! Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he was not happy that New York intended to issue IDs to illegal immigrants. But he said there was nothing he could do to stop it. WHAT THE @#$%!!!!!

    “I don’t endorse giving licenses to people who are not here legally, but federal law does allow states to make that choice,” Chertoff said.

    Think about that, “states” are allowed to make their own choice! So, when will the herion, pot smoking state come into effect…considering “states” get to choose now; how about wife-beating states, and pediphile states next! Our country is toast!

    “The violations of decency continue to grow worse and worse, yet there’s little discernable outcry against them.”

    This gambit of Spitzer’s is yet another example of salami tactics.

    It is by such incremental, baby-step, salami-slice tactics that the left has been able to kick our society and culture as far down into the sewer as it has over the past 30-40 years.

    Leftists appeal to emotions;

    yet, they employ sophisticated, legalistic, sophistic, confusing, distracting, obfuscating techniques that are the stock-in-trade of…whom would you say? Lawyers? Nnaaww!!! Ya think?!

    Leftists, who have a humanist, secular, existentialist, morally relativistic worldview, do not, I think, believe in the existence of the soul.

    Whereas, I would think the (?vast?) majority of traditionalists and conservatives likely do believe in the existence of the soul.

    Leftists have managed to force the culture war to be argued on their home turf; by which I mean in their language.

    It is extremely difficult (?perhaps futile?) to argue against leftists’ positions by using their language (see above).

    By skilfully employing sophistry in a seemingly logical, stepwise approach, leftists can lead a decent, rational person to arrive at the conclusion that:

    It is OK to murder your parents;

    It is OK to lie and steal;

    It is OK to kill an innocent.

    By having chosen the language of the battle, so to speak, leftists have a great advantage in our culture war.

    Trying to make a moral argument using the leftists’ sophistic language will likely be extremely difficult, possibly futile:

    Perhaps as futile as trying to describe selfless, sacrificial marital love, in terms of to whom belong what assets, and in terms of prenuptial agreements;

    Perhaps as futile as trying to explain that the speed of light is the upper limit of speed for an object, by using classical Newtonian mechanics;

    Perhaps as futile as trying to explain Zeno’s paradox of Achilles and the hare, without using integral calculus.

    To win our culture war, we’re going to have to repeatedly, relentlessly, mercilessly (but civilly and truthfully) expose and challenge the leftists; and do it in front of as large a national audience as possible, as often as possible.

    (Had a much better, tighter version of this post virtually finished, when I hit a (?which?) key and lost the whole kit & kaboodle. Sorry….)
