USA Today blogger really, really dislikes this site
USA Today blogger Angela Gunn doesn’t like the blog you are reading. She really, really doesn’t like it (hat tip - reader William A.):
Everyone’s talking this week about the Carnegie Mellon study that concludes that in the blogosphere, less is more — or at least it is on your blogroll. The original study, Cost-effective Outbreak Detection in Networks, takes the meme-spreading analogy (in which information spreads not unlike a virus or a contaminant) and runs with it; the researchers follow the thread and from their conclusions, develop a list of 100 blogs you should read if you’re only reading 100 blogs. Nicholas Carr over at Rough Type has a fine summary, and CMU’s got the raw list.
I pondered doing an experiment to see if I felt better informed reading just those 100, as opposed to the 396 currently on my Bloglines, but immediately ran into a few painful realities:
1) The 100 blogs on that list average higher volume than my 396;
2) None of my friends love me enough to act as the control group (that is, read all 396 and compare notes five or six times/day);
3) I am okay not knowing what’s on Michelle Malkin’s mind most days.…I want to hear what people I respect are thinking, and I want to find more people who challenge or amuse or infuriate me. I think my personal blog intake is richer with less Michelle Malkin and more Andrew Kantor and Matthew Caverhill, or more Joe Bageant and fewer Gothamist clones if you prefer — and as for my own blog, I’d rather be original than encyclopedic.
Painful!
***
Here are the top five blogs in the CMU study:
1 0.1283 http://instapundit.com 4593 4636 1890 5255
2 0.1822 http://donsurber.blogspot.com 1534 1206 679 3495
3 0.2224 http://sciencepolitics.blogspot.com 924 576 888 2701
4 0.2592 http://www.watcherofweasels.com 261 941 1733 3630
5 0.2923 http://michellemalkin.com 1839 12642 1179 6323
And no, Angela Gunn didn’t make the top 100. She’d rather be “original than encyclopedic,” whatever that means.

I dont think it bothers MM so much that Ms Gunn doesnt respect her.If it werent for all these blogs, the truth would not be told.Blogs are the best thing since sliced bread.Top5,way to go.
That obviously means that she doesn’t think you are original. Its kind of like music snobs. They only think its cool if you’ve never heard of it. Once it gets popular then it isn’t cool to them anymore.
What is interesting is that I have never heard of her or her blog before you mentioned it. I also never heard of the three blogs she named. I think my my personal blog intake is richer with less Angela Gunn and more Hot Air and Michelle Malkin.
Of course I could go searching for some psuedo-intellectual, obscure blogger that uses fancy words. Then again, Jeff Goldstein is about as close to that as I can handle without a headache.
I have a rather high reading aptitude, yet I found I had to go over most of her sentences twice to decipher what she was geting at.
Just saying….
Don Surber! Great blog. Good for him. A little surprising, but good for him.
Michelle, You do have to admit that this site has a great number of trolls. I guess you can now add miss Gunn to the list too.
Po’, po’ Angela - she sounds miserable trying to get a handle on that Ol’ Green-Eyed Monster.
Instead of flying into a rage over other’s success she could work on trying to improve her own writing at least enough so somebody would actually care enough to ever read it.
I do not read Michelle Malkin because she is a top blogger and author. I read Michelle Malkin for her honest and thorough analysis of the topic at hand. I read Michelle Malkin because of her personal and professional integrity. I read Michelle Malkin because of her concern for America. I read Michelle Malkin because she is truly a national treasure. And if that harelips the folks on the left, right, or in between, then so be it.
BTW one of the guys mentioned as a replacement for Michelle caught his name mentioned by Angela. and he is thrilled
Matt Caverhill
A “troll” is more applicable to people who post nasty comments at a site just to incite other commenters and attack the blog/site host.
Angela, and others like her, would be more in the “MDS” Malkin Derangement Syndrome” camp, where people are obsessed with and unnaturally fixated on MM.
When lefties don’t want to hear what you say, Michelle, well…we all know what that means. YOU’RE MAKING WAY TOO MUCH SENSE AND THEIR LITTLE BRAINS BEGIN TO HURT.
And when a wet-behind-the-ears neophyte like Ms. Gunn doesn’t want to read you, it’s probably all the big words combined with the big ideas.
And when she mentions the names of the people she likes to read, it’s because she thinks they’re, like, really cool and she wants them to like her and think she has, like, cool eclectic tastes.
Basically, she’s in 7th grade, and she wants to be “original” — just like all the other popular girls.
BTW how to read that CW study> It looks at number of blog posts, Numbre of links to and from site. And it determines which sites are being the most blogged on and most quoted from.
We had discussion on hotair where it was shown that sites like Kos were artifically inflating their numbers to make it appear that more people were veiwing that blog that real numbers
SWEET! #5. Congratulations! It doesn’t seem like you’ll miss her then, eh?
Matt:
Who ever that guy is who is thrilled to be mentioned in a post while MM is burned needs to get a life.
Angela Gunn prefers life in an echo chamber, where her views and beliefs are never challenged and thinking is not a way of life.
It’s obvious that Ms. Gunn is trying to trivialize MM’s views, and that she is jealous of MM’s ability to connect to the masses. If it really didn’t bother her, what would be her point in making the comment. When something doesn’t bother me, I don’t even think about it. Ms Gunn is definitely thinking about it and bugs the heck out of her.
And you dominate the number of inbound links with over 12,000. Good stuff.
Michelle,
I’m sure there are people who dislike this site and your writing more than the USA blogger woman (what’s her name, again? She didn’t impress me, and so I forgot her name already). Some people truly dispise you. But as you know…
that’s the price you pay for being a brilliant, articulate spokesperson for points of view they disagree with. You’re having a rapier-like debating skill that slices them to pieces enrages them further, and so they hate you and make childish noises against you
Well, tough beans for them. Nobody knows them, and fewer care.
I have to say that I am disappointed in the extreme that you have chosen to take a hiatus from O’Reilly, though, because in the very rare - virtually unique - position you hold you really do have a duty to the world, now - to help straighten it out. Certainly you’re entitled to stand on principle, but think on this: O’Reilly is a huge outlet in which to be heard, and you’re filled to the brim with God-given talent which few possess, and a perspective which can be influential through the expression of those talents. For your kid’s sake, don’t limit your venues; you may convince just one woman to not have an abortion, and that born child may grow up in your childrens’ lifetime to find the cure for cancer. So if you have to ease your gut with a tums to stomach being within 10 intellectual light-years of Jerry Rivers, please do it.
The internet is a big place, but not large enough for your own very important and needed talents.
And forget the petty complainers. Never take it personally. Your talent, time and energy are much needed on more important matters. Much, much more important matters.
God’s watching.
Jack Nicholson:
You can’t handle the truth!
Speakup: Most apropos.
She means that more people use you as a source and that burns her butt. SO she’d rather be more “Original” than be someone others look to for info.
In other words Angela is saying “waaaa she’s more popular than ME !”
Yeah Michelle…
Where the left wing disdain as a badge of honor. It befits you well.
I think my my personal blog intake is richer with less Angela Gunn.
Full stop.
I read a litle more. What the “cost effective” midel does is find out which blogs are quoted the most from. In other words the higher the umber of quotes the more liekly you will find a blog that gets out the most stories
In othre words its “cost effective” to spend your time on the top blogs than search many other blogs.
BTW here is some other blogs(at least ones I think I know)

I started coming to this site around a year ago thanks to a link from Mark Levin’s website.
I appreciate the straight forward, no BS news you bring to us.
Although I don’t spend a lot of time on the internet, I always come here after checking my mail.
You may have been number five on the list, but your number one in our hearts.
Thanks again for all the hard work that is put into this site.
This is coming from somebody who works for McNews? I stopped reading that rag way back in high school because even then I found it’s content utterly devoid of serious news and analysis. The traffic she recieves from visitors to this site to see who she is will probabaly more than she sees a year!
Hell,I just read this blog hopin’ to see hot pics of Michelle….

You forgot she is also very easy to look at and listen to on the TV! Congratulations Michelle. # 5! awesome!
Liberals have no concept of truth.
Their worth is based solely on delusional thinking and all must commit to their way. They like to FEEL GOOD.
as the old saying goes…..”the Truth hurts, doesn’t it?”
When I mentioned the blogosphere to a friend recently, I found, much to my dismay, that he favors the liberal point of view. When I mentioned MM he said he believes people like her are part of the problem. Well, I guess if wants to see the so-called progressive agenda go through he would see Michelle as a problem. I’m grateful to her for standing on principle and integrity and sounding the alarm when someone is trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes.
I’m just here for the food.

Food for Thought
Angela who?? Seriously, Angela who??
Really serious - this site, thanks to the clear and logical thinking of our host and her crew, cuts to the quick of every issue about which I am concerned.
Illegal immigration, government corruption, Conservative political issues, the War on islamo-Fascism, etc.
THANK YOU! Please excuse the caps.
Congratulations Michelle … #5 speaks well for you, your sincerity and your efforts on our behalf to keep us all well informed …
Now … all you folks out there … get busy and spread the word … Michelle should have been number 1 …
Somebody thats nobody slams a somebody thinking this will make her a somebody but shes still a nobody.
Gunn suffers from a syndrome known as sour grapes. She cannot figure out why her blog mimics that flushing sound, particularly when she has USA Today behind her. I’ll go out on a limb here, and bet she is all for the fairness doctrine.
With USA today backing her she is still in the blog crapper. Looks like they have tried to steer viewers to her site - the news equivalent of tyng a pork chop around her neck to get the dog to play with her.
One of these days, USA today will figure out they backed a loser, and a very corporate decision will be made to usher MS. Gunn to the street with her blogroll, which may actually have a highest and best use another type of roll, similar to 2 ply.
Ms. Gunn will never realize that 1) she is not smarter than everyone else 2) the American people can think for themselves and 3) the American people value the truth and not some hysterical twisting and turning of faux facts.
Something Peggy Noonan wrote really struck a chord with me. She noted that she worked with the likes of Edward Murrow, who instilled in her the philosophy, everyone is entitled to their own opinion; but not their own facts.
Ms. Gunn may want to take a look at that-that is, if Peggy Noonan is not on her book burning list.
Publicity stunt all the way. By mentioning her distaste for you she generates extra traffic for her own blog as a result of the provided reference link. Sorry Michelle but you’ve been had.
aj … easy there … lay off breathing all that smoke out there … it’s fogging up your brain …
lc, by whom?
I’m not interested in looking at her site, just nice manners to provide a link and professional courtesy.
Hey dl,
My daughters Soccer game was cancelled because of the smoke, she was bummed.
LC
Just Michelle letting Ms. Gunn have her 15 minutes of fame … next week no one will remember her name and she will return to being an irrelevant footnote in the non-descript annals of the internet once again …
Funny, the first time Angela Gunn ever showed up on my radar was when she took a pot-shot at Michelle.
Jealousy. Nothing more.
aj … bummer …
Most liberals can’t stand being confronted with reality-busting information. I suspect that Ms. USA is a flaming effete liberal snob and has her feathers all in a snuffle because another woman blogger has and is getting more attention than she is…and on pure merit no less.
meatpieandtatters
merit? … merit? … libs don’t need no stinkin’ merit … they are owed everything because they are libs and are always correct even when they are wrong …
I may not be reading it right, but MM is in the top 5,not #5
Michelle, the stooges at ‘Crooks and Liar’s’(I refer to them as ‘Kook’s and ‘Loser’s’) are reporting that you were fired from O’Reillys show because of what of your reporting on the Frost family. They are dishonest as the day is long. It was a pleasure watching Charles at LGF take them down a notch or 3 last week. God bless and keep up the great work. Being disliked(hated even!) by the elites and the liars is a badge of honor
Ms. Gunn and her ilk don’t like Michelle because she brings up subjects Democrats would rather not be discussed. Just trust the loons, ask no questions, do it their way and move on. They are certainly do not advocate debate or free speech.
Good job Michelle.
What she really wants to hear is an echo-chamber reflecting her silly, Utopian beliefs. Reality is a challenge.
Well this one makes my top 3 easily. Never heard of Angela Gunn. And without Michelle Malkin, I guess I never would have. lol
Dear Old Angela is trying to make a name for herself by attacking Michelle M.
What better opponent to attack to try and get yourself known than a top quality person.
USA Today? Give me a break. At best an ok newspaper. Angela???? Who the hell is she? She looks like a liberal. They have a certain look that is difficult to define by you can always recognize them. It has to do with the fact that liberalism is a mental disorder.
I tried to register on their site so I could express my opinion. Like most liberal things, it took me beyond my tolerance point to register.
I agree it is an obvious attempt to create controversy and thereby increase her blog traffic. Sad.
MM is a daily read. Might I also recommend Belmont Club, Michael Yon and Work and Days by Victor Davis Hanson.
All will make you better informed. Thanks for all the hard work Michelle.
That means she’d rather spew garbage than write anything meaningful. After all, it is “original”.
Oh, having had a look through the list I don’t think its accurate. Has anybody actually visited all the blogs in that list? I stopped after clicking through 20.
Look at entry number 14. http://www.anglican.tk is a site that either flogs prayer beads or is owned by a cyber squatter. I find it hard to understand how that site could make it into the top 100 blogs, much less how that site can even be considered a blog.
To me, that causes the value of this list to skydive.
Now if I was her, or CEO of some news sites like CNN and MSNBC, rather than “attacking” the successful people, I would be asking myself and staff, “what are they doing that we are not doing that makes them better than we are?” Makes sense to me, but apparently to some, it doesn’t. With the left, it all boils down to emotion. Everything is emotion based, rather than logic based. It’s a rare liberal than can sit down and debate a point logically, without resorting to whining, moaning, and complaining. Angela, do yourself a favor, and think things out. Look at the successful and change accordingly. By the way, MM, congrats! We all love you here.
As to the first part I say shut up and eat your vegetables and as to the second part I say just as well otherwise you’d be disappointed. It is much better for some to have the Reader Digest version than that of the encyclopedia (USA Today is an acceptable substitute for the Reader’s Digest).
I think Michelle should sent Angela a thank you card for the increased traffic.
Walldog,
I think you mean that the other way around.
I believe the Cat, Larry, almeehan and ajmontana pretty much covered my thoughts.
The “next time” I read Angie’s ramblings will be the first, and there won’t be that “next time”.
Angela who?
Credit where credit is due. Congratulations. Newsweek can just take that Up its Arrow and do you-know-what with it.
A day without MichelleMalkin.com is like a… (Never mind. There is no day without MichelleMalkin.com…)
My, aren’t these grapes sour?
Man, I just read Ms. Gunn’s article referred to above.
Like one of the posters above, I thought I had a reasonable command of standard English; but, I almost had to take notes to keep track of the sense of some of her sentences - somewhat similar to “waiting for the verb” when reading or listening to German.
I then read her (I assume) self-written bio; at least, it’s written in the first person so, I assume (always dangerous!) that she herself wrote it.
Sounds like a junior high-schooler trying to convince you to vote for him.
OT:
Umm…I can’t seem to get logged in to the FEMA thread - it repeatedly comes up to the “update” page, and never lets me leave there.
Anyone else having this problem?
To be ranked in the “Top 5″ in any thing(positive) is a very noteworthy accomplisnment. I think Michelle is No.1. But Rush still put the “Rush” in Mt. Rushmore!
mojoe: I am okay never having heard of Angela Gunn.
I visited these blogs. Two were liberal and one cartoony. All three were run by men none of whom “sounded” asian to me. From this I can only conclude that Ms. Gunn hates women, Asians and clones.
/lib off
P.S. What happened to “preview”
“I do not read Michelle Malkin because she is a top blogger and author. I read Michelle Malkin for her honest and thorough analysis of the topic at hand. I read Michelle Malkin because of her personal and professional integrity. I read Michelle Malkin because of her concern for America. I read Michelle Malkin because she is truly a national treasure.”
DITTO
By the way, you are always welcome to come visit me over at #72 on the list:
http://rhymeswithright.mu.nu
Oh, and to commenter #51 above — the sad reality of the blogosphere is that some blogs go out of existence. In the case of the site you mention, what was once a vibrant blog has closed down and the URL has been scooped up by the garbage site you mention. Since the list in question was based upon analysis of traffic and statistics for 2006, that in no way devalues the list.
I’ve never heard of this twit Gunn, and I doubt I’ll be visitng her site.
Now,now Michelle, don’t go gettig all teary-eyed and start boo-freakin’ –hooing all over your keyboard because someone who noone’s ever heard of used your name to try to make a name of her own. What a dingbat.
Ironically, a link from MM probably gave this elitist tool more traffic in a day than her pathetic ramblings would have generated in a decade on their own.
USA Today?Does any one still read that rag?
BTW-The ding-bat reference was meant for what’s her name-not Michelle. What happened to the preview?
Well, other than the typo (send instead of sent), I meant what I said. Michelle should send Angela a thank you note for increasing her traffic. The more the libs bitch about someone they know nothing about, the more curious people are going to be.
Michelle can thank Chrissy (Matthews) for turning me on to her after seeing him try to rip into her with such hate-filled vitriol. The equanimity in which she conducted herself told me she was someone worth paying attention to.
.
Wow…my blog had a bigger following than hers before I took it down, and I didn’t work for a newspaper.
Just goes to show you, that when given a chance, people will not suffer having to listen to (Err America) or read whiney little spoiled rotten brats droning on about how horrible and miserable they are and the world is.
Seriously…who wants to be that depressed, let alone be lied to and have your emotions manipulated that much?
The first blog I read IS MM’s blog and the blogs she links to. Much more efficient that way.
The moonbats (liberals, Democrats, Truthers, and Bush-haters) dislike Michelle Malkin because:
(1) she exists and is able to effectively communicate the conservative position, and the left doesn’t like their monopoly on information threatened,
(2) tap into a groundswell of general unhappiness with liberals, including their deceit, their constant attacks on the right, their manipulation of the media, their opposition to the war, and their behavior with respect to our military, and
(3) because moonbats and liberals are not just “unhinged” but suffer from a real, displacement induced, paranoia. Charles Krauthhammer coined the term “Bush Derangement Syndrome,” but the syndrome applies to any and all who either defend the war, support George W. Bush, or refuse to accept their pointof view.
Michelle, I am glad you exist. I am glad you are fighting our good fight. I stand in awe of you, your ability to communicate, and your refusal to abandon your position. While I do not agree with you 100% of the time, I appreciate the privilege of being able to comment.
When those in the MSM called you a “firecracker” a while ago, they lied. The imprint you are leaving on the American political scene is more like a stick of dynamite. You are vastly more powerful than your enemies are willing to acknowledge.
I get my news from Rush Limbaugh, MM.com and Hotair.com. Sometimes just to test how informed I am, I watch Charlie Gibson on ABC news (snort worthy.) As soon as he mentions the story, I know all of details of it already. There’s rarely a story mentioned on the evening news that I don’t know about already. Sometime these stories on the evening news have been covered by hotair.com WEEKS before!!!1 I usually know more about current events than my liberal buddies. This is my informal scientific study.
Would Ms. Gunn like a saucer of milk, too?
You forgor at least one big reason, George:
Michelle doesn’t buy into the left’s “identity politics” template and related schemes. Drives them absolutely & totally nuts.
What’s next Angie…gonna make fun of Michelle’s maiden name?
How sad. Come back when you are ready for the big league (i.e., when your blog has more than a handful of viewers).
Somewhat related, a new blog, http://kafircanada.blogspot.com/
has a striking graphic on the Islamic bus adverts in the UK
Larry L. Sharp, one of the best posts in history. Ditto.
I read Michelle because she’s intelligent, articulate, gutsy, and won’t back down from moonbats like Keith Olbermann, who has to be one of the most schizoid individuals on the planet. Keep up the good work, Michelle. As long as they have conniptions, you’re doing your job!
oops, double post!
Isn’t USA Today the newspaper for illiterates that like pretty graphs?
Thank goodness for the blogospere!!!!
We wouldn’t get ANY, or at most very, very little, honest reporting otherwise.
The lefty’s loony toons are getting their panties in a bunch over the fact that their sick monopoly on the news has been broken for good! It scares them to no end.
GET USED TO IT LOONY LEFTY’S !!
She reads 396 blogs a day? Does she have a job?
#84, yes, and what infuriates the editors is having to type instead of using crayons.
Never heard of the woman before today.
USA Today is still around? If only all the hotels accross the country would just stop their subscriptions…
If she doesn’t care what Michelle thinks than why is she even giving her a second thought?
Angela WHO?
The narcissistic borderline personality disorder of liberal journalists is getting monotonous. Angie baby has had her 15 minutes of fame, so she can crawl back under her rock continue writing her drivel.
