USA Today blogger really, really dislikes this site

By Michelle Malkin  •  October 27, 2007 07:45 PM

USA Today blogger Angela Gunn doesn’t like the blog you are reading. She really, really doesn’t like it (hat tip - reader William A.):

Everyone’s talking this week about the Carnegie Mellon study that concludes that in the blogosphere, less is more — or at least it is on your blogroll. The original study, Cost-effective Outbreak Detection in Networks, takes the meme-spreading analogy (in which information spreads not unlike a virus or a contaminant) and runs with it; the researchers follow the thread and from their conclusions, develop a list of 100 blogs you should read if you’re only reading 100 blogs. Nicholas Carr over at Rough Type has a fine summary, and CMU’s got the raw list.

I pondered doing an experiment to see if I felt better informed reading just those 100, as opposed to the 396 currently on my Bloglines, but immediately ran into a few painful realities:

1) The 100 blogs on that list average higher volume than my 396;
2) None of my friends love me enough to act as the control group (that is, read all 396 and compare notes five or six times/day);
3) I am okay not knowing what’s on Michelle Malkin’s mind most days.

…I want to hear what people I respect are thinking, and I want to find more people who challenge or amuse or infuriate me. I think my personal blog intake is richer with less Michelle Malkin and more Andrew Kantor and Matthew Caverhill, or more Joe Bageant and fewer Gothamist clones if you prefer — and as for my own blog, I’d rather be original than encyclopedic.

Painful!

***

Here are the top five blogs in the CMU study:

1 0.1283 http://instapundit.com 4593 4636 1890 5255
2 0.1822 http://donsurber.blogspot.com 1534 1206 679 3495
3 0.2224 http://sciencepolitics.blogspot.com 924 576 888 2701
4 0.2592 http://www.watcherofweasels.com 261 941 1733 3630
5 0.2923 http://michellemalkin.com 1839 12642 1179 6323

And no, Angela Gunn didn’t make the top 100. She’d rather be “original than encyclopedic,” whatever that means.

That obviously means that she doesn’t think you are original. Its kind of like music snobs. They only think its cool if you’ve never heard of it. Once it gets popular then it isn’t cool to them anymore.

What is interesting is that I have never heard of her or her blog before you mentioned it. I also never heard of the three blogs she named. I think my my personal blog intake is richer with less Angela Gunn and more Hot Air and Michelle Malkin.

    Matt Caverhill

That is 18 shades of awesome.

If you’ve heard me talk about Ann Coulter and Bill O’Reilly, I am pretty sure you can figure out where I stand on Michelle Malkin, so to both be name checked in a quote as something good, something to aspire to, while at the same time, Michelle Malkin is getting burned… to me that is one of those perfect moments in blogging.

And I know some of you reading this also read Michelle Malkin, and I am not going to rip on her, but suffice it to say, me and Mrs. Malkin do not see eye to eye on many things, nor do I like the tone she takes when she discusses those same issues.
Let’s just say, the above quote really made my week.

A “troll” is more applicable to people who post nasty comments at a site just to incite other commenters and attack the blog/site host.

Angela, and others like her, would be more in the “MDS” Malkin Derangement Syndrome” camp, where people are obsessed with and unnaturally fixated on MM.

When lefties don’t want to hear what you say, Michelle, well…we all know what that means. YOU’RE MAKING WAY TOO MUCH SENSE AND THEIR LITTLE BRAINS BEGIN TO HURT.

And when a wet-behind-the-ears neophyte like Ms. Gunn doesn’t want to read you, it’s probably all the big words combined with the big ideas.

And when she mentions the names of the people she likes to read, it’s because she thinks they’re, like, really cool and she wants them to like her and think she has, like, cool eclectic tastes.

Basically, she’s in 7th grade, and she wants to be “original” — just like all the other popular girls.

PA score : score for the solution of length k

    Michelle,

I’m sure there are people who dislike this site and your writing more than the USA blogger woman (what’s her name, again? She didn’t impress me, and so I forgot her name already). Some people truly dispise you. But as you know…

that’s the price you pay for being a brilliant, articulate spokesperson for points of view they disagree with. You’re having a rapier-like debating skill that slices them to pieces enrages them further, and so they hate you and make childish noises against you

Well, tough beans for them. Nobody knows them, and fewer care.

I have to say that I am disappointed in the extreme that you have chosen to take a hiatus from O’Reilly, though, because in the very rare - virtually unique - position you hold you really do have a duty to the world, now - to help straighten it out. Certainly you’re entitled to stand on principle, but think on this: O’Reilly is a huge outlet in which to be heard, and you’re filled to the brim with God-given talent which few possess, and a perspective which can be influential through the expression of those talents. For your kid’s sake, don’t limit your venues; you may convince just one woman to not have an abortion, and that born child may grow up in your childrens’ lifetime to find the cure for cancer. So if you have to ease your gut with a tums to stomach being within 10 intellectual light-years of Jerry Rivers, please do it.

The internet is a big place, but not large enough for your own very important and needed talents.

And forget the petty complainers. Never take it personally. Your talent, time and energy are much needed on more important matters. Much, much more important matters.

    God’s watching. ;-)

Gunn suffers from a syndrome known as sour grapes. She cannot figure out why her blog mimics that flushing sound, particularly when she has USA Today behind her. I’ll go out on a limb here, and bet she is all for the fairness doctrine.

With USA today backing her she is still in the blog crapper. Looks like they have tried to steer viewers to her site - the news equivalent of tyng a pork chop around her neck to get the dog to play with her.

One of these days, USA today will figure out they backed a loser, and a very corporate decision will be made to usher MS. Gunn to the street with her blogroll, which may actually have a highest and best use another type of roll, similar to 2 ply.

Ms. Gunn will never realize that 1) she is not smarter than everyone else 2) the American people can think for themselves and 3) the American people value the truth and not some hysterical twisting and turning of faux facts.

Something Peggy Noonan wrote really struck a chord with me. She noted that she worked with the likes of Edward Murrow, who instilled in her the philosophy, everyone is entitled to their own opinion; but not their own facts.

Ms. Gunn may want to take a look at that-that is, if Peggy Noonan is not on her book burning list.

Man, I just read Ms. Gunn’s article referred to above.

Like one of the posters above, I thought I had a reasonable command of standard English; but, I almost had to take notes to keep track of the sense of some of her sentences - somewhat similar to “waiting for the verb” when reading or listening to German.

I then read her (I assume) self-written bio; at least, it’s written in the first person so, I assume (always dangerous!) that she herself wrote it.
Sounds like a junior high-schooler trying to convince you to vote for him.

I visited these blogs. Two were liberal and one cartoony. All three were run by men none of whom “sounded” asian to me. From this I can only conclude that Ms. Gunn hates women, Asians and clones.

Oh, and to commenter #51 above — the sad reality of the blogosphere is that some blogs go out of existence. In the case of the site you mention, what was once a vibrant blog has closed down and the URL has been scooped up by the garbage site you mention. Since the list in question was based upon analysis of traffic and statistics for 2006, that in no way devalues the list.

Well, other than the typo (send instead of sent), I meant what I said. Michelle should send Angela a thank you note for increasing her traffic. The more the libs bitch about someone they know nothing about, the more curious people are going to be.

Michelle can thank Chrissy (Matthews) for turning me on to her after seeing him try to rip into her with such hate-filled vitriol. The equanimity in which she conducted herself told me she was someone worth paying attention to.

The moonbats (liberals, Democrats, Truthers, and Bush-haters) dislike Michelle Malkin because:

    (1) she exists and is able to effectively communicate the conservative position, and the left doesn’t like their monopoly on information threatened,

    (2) tap into a groundswell of general unhappiness with liberals, including their deceit, their constant attacks on the right, their manipulation of the media, their opposition to the war, and their behavior with respect to our military, and

    (3) because moonbats and liberals are not just “unhinged” but suffer from a real, displacement induced, paranoia. Charles Krauthhammer coined the term “Bush Derangement Syndrome,” but the syndrome applies to any and all who either defend the war, support George W. Bush, or refuse to accept their pointof view.

Michelle, I am glad you exist. I am glad you are fighting our good fight. I stand in awe of you, your ability to communicate, and your refusal to abandon your position. While I do not agree with you 100% of the time, I appreciate the privilege of being able to comment.

When those in the MSM called you a “firecracker” a while ago, they lied. The imprint you are leaving on the American political scene is more like a stick of dynamite. You are vastly more powerful than your enemies are willing to acknowledge.

I pondered doing an experiment to see if I felt better informed reading just those 100, as opposed to the 396 currently on my Bloglines, but immediately ran into a few painful realities:AG

I get my news from Rush Limbaugh, MM.com and Hotair.com. Sometimes just to test how informed I am, I watch Charlie Gibson on ABC news (snort worthy.) As soon as he mentions the story, I know all of details of it already. There’s rarely a story mentioned on the evening news that I don’t know about already. Sometime these stories on the evening news have been covered by hotair.com WEEKS before!!!1 I usually know more about current events than my liberal buddies. This is my informal scientific study.
