Michael Bloomberg: Open-borders hypocrite of the day

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 2, 2007 11:20 AM

If there’s one thing more nauseating than Hillary Clinton’s whirling dervish positions on the Eliot Spitzer-crafted, Bush DHS-approved illegal alien driver’s license plan, it’s the hypocritical noise from open-borders zealots trying to exploit the moment.

Take NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg (hat tip: Andrew Malcolm):

BLITZER: Should illegal immigrants, there may be a million of them in New York state, have driver’s licenses, New York state driver’s licenses?

BLOOMBERG: I do not believe they should. I think and I’ve expressed to the governor an objection that I’ve had to do it and my police commissioner has had to this for a long time and I’ve been asked this question.

The governor’s first proposal, I thought, was inappropriate. And should not have been enacted. And I told him so privately which is the way I should deal with him. His second proposal of three different kinds of licenses are something that I have — I think is a step in the right direction. But I still don’t think that it is where we should be.

The bottom line is we should be giving driver’s licenses to people knowing who they are and making sure that they have a right to have them and we should make sure particularly when it comes to guns that you can only use a secure driver’s license to buy guns. After all, we have a crazy system, Wolf, in our country. We have people on the can’t fly list because they are potential terrorists that can buy guns. We just have to stop this craziness. If we have a secure license to get in and out of the country, you certainly should have a secure license to be able to buy guns.

BLITZER: So am I hearing you right that on this issue of driver’s licenses in New York State, you tend to agree more with Lou Dobbs than Eliot Spitzer?

BLOOMBERG: Well, Lou is an old friend of mine that I agree with very seldom but nevertheless in this case he happens to be right.

So, he disagrees that illegal aliens should have licenses because we should know who people are and make sure they have a right to possess government ID…and yet, he has vigorously and repeatedly defended NYC’s illegal alien sanctuary policy.

Bloomberg is, as Heather Mac Donald has rightly dubbed him, the Open Borders Mayor. As she noted last year when he testified in Congress against sanctuary reform:

In 1996, Congress responded by prohibiting local governments from restricting the speech of their workers in this way. To no avail. Virtually every sanctuary city proceeded to ignore this new federal law as well as the preexisting immigration laws. New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani took his defiance to federal court. He lost his suit against the 1996 law, but—on September 10, 2001—declared his intention to continue violating it anyway.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg has gone even further in backing the sanctuary policy. In 2003, the city faced a massive public relations fiasco following the rape of a Queens mother by a group of illegal Mexicans. New York police had arrested several of the Mexicans previously for other crimes, but reported none of them to the immigration agency. Congress hauled in the city’s criminal justice coordinator to testify about the city’s sanctuary law, after which Mayor Bloomberg—amazingly—strengthened the policy.

Hillary Clinton isn’t the only phony double-talker on immigration enforcement.

Unfortunately for our side, Michael Bloomberg isn’t the only phony GOP double-talker on the issue, either.

Tip of the iceberg.

Bloomberg is NO republican. Never was, never will be. Of course Bush is no Republican anymore either. Come to think of it, I left the Republican party last year(or did they leave me?)

    Where is the Republican party??????

    They have left the building.

OT maybe or not? I think it’s somewhat interesting that a person can declare their own political affiliation - I’m a Republican (whether or not they actually support any of the positions of the party) but they can’t self declare “I’m a lawyer” or “I’m a medical doctor” without getting into pretty deep trouble.
Therefore, we need to take Bloomberg’s GOP label with a rather large grain of salt. (Same applies to a bunch of others - Spector comes to mind as another page one example)

McCain, comes to mind too as a RINO. It is time to let the Republicans know that we are the ‘Conservative’ Party; and kindly stand for these ‘conservative’ principles or you don’t get our vote!

Southern California is a mess, I can’t go anywhere without thinking I am in Mexico, as english is not spoken often here anymore. Anarchy at its best, disobey the Federal Laws and allow people to come and stay illegally, can I decide which laws I want to obey? Cause I’m needin’ some money.

    This just burns me up.
I remember when I first moved to NJ and tried to get my license switched from PA to NJ (I know from the frying pan into the fire :-) ). The NJMVC is the most incompetent motor vehicle dept., I every visited. I received nothing but one roadblock after another.

My PA license was under my maiden name and I was applying for the NJ license under my married name. You would have thought that I posited a question on string theory…all I wanted to do was change the name on my license! I don’t know how many different booths I had to go to before some idiot said that my marriage license, birth certificate and SS card weren’t enough to get the name changed. My social security number was still under my maiden name but according to their instructions, I didn’t need my SS card to reflect my marriage named…my marriage license was supposed to suffice. Needless, to say I had to leave on that day and come back with the SS card under my married name.

Lo and behold, the second trip turned out to be fruitful, I didn’t even need my SS card in order to change my name on my license just as I suspected.
The point I am trying to make is, a US citizen with proper documentation had to go through the wringer.
Yet, an illegal alien with a note from mommy can get a license, no questions asked! There is something very wrong with our current state of affairs.

    Hows-za-bout,
all illegals must register for an “illegal card” finger printed DNA’ed and put in the system.
If they are caught without one i.e. breaking a law, immediate deportation (no exceptions).
Why for the love of pete would anyone with half a brain want to let them drive without registration or insurance (in most cases)? STOP THE MADNESS!
When applying for this illegal card they can start a process to becoming a legal citizen with some grasp on English!

Bloomberg joined the GOP because he could not get a Democratic nomination for mayor and indeed quit not too long ago to become an independent. When he first came out against the Spitzer proposal, Spitzer called him ethically and morally wrong. Now, the rumor mills have it, Bloomberg plans to challenge Spitzer in 2012. Not only is he more publicly tactful than Spitzer, his fortune is at least 10 times that of the governor.

I keep getting this nagging suspicion that trusting big city Mayors with immigration law enforcement is a bad idea.

Character and moral issues with them is like playing whackamo.

They try to knock down one immigration issue and what they really meant pops up somewhere else.

Why do these mayors keep inviting illegals that are criminals to our cities? If you were a fugitive from south of the boarder where would you go? Why is that so hard to understand??!!! I thought our leaders were supposed to make decisions that kept us safe not invite peril. I guess its “No vote is too costly!” if you are a democrat or weak, suck-up republican.

Bloomberg ain’t a Republican and I wish he’d stop saying he is. Second, after losing a driver’s license at O’Hare last year and knowing I needed another to get back on another flight the following week, I ran over to the mall DMV and walked out 20 minutes later with a 3-D photo driver’s license. But except for the incredibly adept local bureaucrats, my 15-minute commute, the acreage, this is a terrible place to live. Don’t bother checking it out. It’s absolutely terrible. Keep moving.

This could mean that he approves of “bringing them out of the shadows” so we know who they are through amnesty before giving them licenses.

Or as in Mexinois, he may approve of “new Americans” having licenses, but not officially recognize the term “illegal immigrant.”

I have also had it out here in Idaho. Except for the local Air Force Base most of the economy is Agricultural and you can guess how many folks we have here that are less than legally in this country. I stood at the front of the line today in the downtown branch of my Credit Union while 4 tellers were trying to communicate with a Spanish only speaking man. Then I guess they couldn’t see me (I’m only 5’5” and must have blended with the background I guess I’m better at camouflage then I thought). About two minutes later I was finally helped when two retired gentlemen entered the branch. The retired guys pointed me out as being first in line. Good thing I do most of my business with them on base or I would pull my account. The staff at the base branch only speaks English and understand how to provide good customer service. I’m still fuming about selecting Spanish or English on the ATMs.
