Take a vet to dinner

By Michelle Malkin  •  November 12, 2007 08:20 AM

Yesterday was Veterans Day; today’s the federal/legal public holiday marking the occasion. One nice way to celebrate: Take a vet to dinner. Golden Corral is offering a free meal to honor veterans:

Always glad to salute businesses that salute the troops.

Great idea and McCormick and Schmick gave a free entree yesterday to any veteran. The Golden Corral offer is for active duty and reservists I believe.

Warms my heart to learn of businesses reaching out to our veterans. Not enough of them do in my estimation. However, GC deserves a nod. Job well done!

I’ll put this restaurant on the “ok to do business with” list.

    I posted this elsewhere:

Yesterday in church my pastor asked the veterans in our church to stand. When they did he summoned us to give them a round of applause. Naturally, we complied. My pastor asked one of the vets if he would like to go back, the vet replied - in a heartbeat. Brought tears to my eyes. In was a great way to start the service.

Thank you to those who have served - Vets!
Thank you to those who are serving -future Vets!
Thank you to those who are gearing up to serve - Vets in training!

    God Bless You All!

I guess you could bring your DD-214 if you are not active/ready reserve.

    Pretty cool.

Either come in uniform or bring your DD-214. This is real, and they don’t skimp on the food to make up for the volume! Golden Corral is to be commended for continuing this tradition.

I’ll be eating at home with my wife and children, but please, folks, take a veteran to dinner. And thanks, Michelle, for honoring those of us who served. It was our pleasure.

PS: Special shout out to radio sports talk show hosts Bill Riley (KSL) and Cole Pepper (WOKV) for giving veterans “first caller” privileges on Veterans Day. They did this in the 90s, when it wasn’t “cool.” Commendable.

I believe their policy may be active and reserve, but last year I stopped in with a bunch of my Rolling Thunder buds and from the patches on my vest, my money was no good in the one we stopped in. It may have been a local managers option, but from the reaction of the other customers, if the management had not taken the initiative, there were a bunch of civilians who would have stepped up to fill the gap.

I received this link in email from Godaddy.com. It is a tribute to the Marines honoring and celebrating them on their anniversary. I was impressed to see a company take the time and effort to honor the Marines in this way. Thought I would pass it along and share it.
Thanks, prayers and gratitude to all of our Veterans. Where would we be without you?

Thanks to Golden Corral. We may change our plans and go out to eat tonight.
I am a retired Army SSG. The best thank you I every received from a business was Anheuser-Busch Sea World after Desert Storm. Took my family and parents and was handed a receipt for $110 and charged $0. Budweiser also has that awesome commercial with the soldiers walking thru the airport and everyone clapping.

Michelle, thanks for supporting the VETS.

Sea World continues their tribute to the military. See my recent column, An Open Letter to August Busch, IV.

    Excerpt:

I am overwhelmed in what struck me as the greatest outpouring of love and gratitude I have ever received for my role in defending this nation I love so much. I believe I can speak for most veterans when I say that we have never tried to be heroes. We had a job to do. We did it, and it was our pleasure.

Even for those who disagree with certain aspects of our various missions (let’s face it, Iraq is controversial), we appreciate the support from home. Letters and packages from home mean the world to us. E-mail is a god-send.

But that two-minute rally of “thanks” meant as much to me as all the letters and notes of support I could have ever received.

So, on behalf of those who have served with me, I say a fond “You’re Welcome.”

Back in the 60’s when I joined the Navy I was waiting for a school to start up and spent a few months on an old TinCan Reserve destroyer in Tampa and the local plant had a outdoor pub that knew all the crew members and we always drank free.

I’ve never had a problem with food poisoning. Eating too much, yes, but that is my problem not theirs.

My son came to visit from FL yesterday and spoke in our church in TN. He is a retired Major, 25 yrs of service and 3 campaigns in Iraq, some behind the Iron Curtain intrigue years ago and all around great man. (sorta like…oh well)

Thanks for your patriotism Michelle, especially enjoyed your morale boost to the troops in your visit to Iraq.

I agree. Maybe Raging’s selection had been sitting there too long? Not a problem with Military Appreciation Monday as there are long lines on those nights!

    Michelle,

This is typical of Golden Corrall, where we live outside of Dallas, my husband was given a card on more then one occasion, for a free dinner because he was in uniform- btus. He is retired now after 21 years of service. I am going to let him know what the Golden Corrall is doing for Veterans Day.

Sears is another great company that is supportive of Military Service People. We buy our large kitchen appliances from Sears, Dishwasher latley.

It originally started out as a tribute to veterans, but then GC expanded it to Military Appreciation Monday, to include all current military folks and veterans.

I have volunteered at this event many times in the past, and the folks really appreciate it.

Wait… someone in the U.S. did something magnanimous… without the government getting involved?

Maybe the Nannies should start taxing cheap buffet restaurants and running a free veterans buffet restaurant with the revenues… I better stop before they really do get some ideas.

I suppose the government is the one entity that would probably produce something worse than the Golden Corral cuisine!

I jest, though. The restaurant deserves credit and this is the sort of civic consciousness we need to encourage by holding it up as an example.

Check with the local VA, and their counselors can help you get your DD-214.
Once you get it, copy it, lock it up in safety deposit box, wrap it up in a moisture resistent bag and bury it in the backyard—whatever it takes to keep it from disappearing! :)

To those that of you that support us Vets-a very BIG thank you from the bottom of my heart!

The only thing about Golden Corral I don’t like is that they appear to have a healthy dose of illegal aliens working for them (at most of the locations I’ve been to, in about 4 states.)

As for sausage, that ’slop’ statement is about what I’d expect from an elitist snob. Would you like to know where ’sausage’ comes from? I grew up on a hog farm and would be glad to tell you. :D

Golden Corral serves all active duty, and veterans. You don’t need a DD214, a membership card from a vets org., such as VFW, American Legion, AM Vets will get you in. Our GC is pretty good, I go there alot. If any of you guys need to preserve your DD214, go to your courthouse and have it recorded. They should have told you that when you ETSed.

At the Golden Corral in my neighborhood they also have a campaign ongoing right now to send postcards to every service member currently serving in theater. They have the postcards, ask the server, and you fill it out and drop it in the box on the way out. I encourage everyone who take advantage of the meal to not forget to drop a note to those serving.

At least he spared us book and verse. Apparently, Christ did not anticipate free lunch at the Golden Corral.

On Saturday, I went to Lowe’s (Building Supply) and they asked if I had any immediate relatives that are in or were in the military. I said yes and they gave me a 10% discount.

Growing up, in my home church, all the veterans would wear their uniforms on the Veteran’s Day sunday. I was so proud to see my dad in his Army uniform.

Thank you to everyone who has ever served in the US military. We owe you so much.
