Jihad in the Philippines: 3 dead in bombing

The war on jihad is global. Someone tell John Edwards:

A Philippine congressman who had been targeted by Muslim militants was among three people killed Tuesday night when a bomb exploded at an entrance of the Philippine House of Representatives, police said.

Rep. Wahab Akbar, a former member of a Muslim rebel group that signed a peace accord with the government in 1996, died at the hospital, his chief of staff said.

Metropolitan Manila Police Chief Geary Barias said a lawmaker’s driver and a congressional staff member also were killed. Seven other people were wounded, including two congresswomen.

Police and soldiers in the capital went on high alert, but Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno sought to play down the possible involvement of Muslim extremists, saying the investigation was pointing away from a terrorist attack and “more of a directed assault on certain individual.”

“There were threats on life of Akbar,” Puno said. “The indications are that that was the case both in terms of location of the bomb and the manner it was set off.”

It appears the killings were retribution by the Abu Sayyaf for Akbar’s decision to turn on them:

Akbar was once a member of the Moro National Liberation Front, a Muslim rebel group that dropped its secessionist goal and signed a peace accord with the government in September 1996.

Some security officials have suspected that Akbar knew the leaders of Abu Sayyaf, which has its roots on Basilan island. But they said he later had a falling out with Abu Sayyaf commanders and started fighting them.

See-Dubya blogged here about the Manila mall bombing last month, which killed 11 people and injured more than 100.

Think jihad in the Philippines has no connection to our own homeland security?

Think again.

The time is near (or has past as far as I am concerned) for everyone; Christians, Atheists, Buddhists, etc., to unite against a sworn enemy of democracy everywhere. Anywhere there is a democracy they will attack. They will not stop. They cannot be coddled. The time for negotiations and discussions has past. We must speak back to them in the only language they understand.

    twiggman,

It is argued by Spencer that Islam and democracy may not be able to coexist. Muslim scholars find that where democracy allows man to establish the laws, Islam dictates that only Allah can create the laws, and man must follow them. Hence, a theocracy under Islamic rule (”God’s laws, not man’s, should govern the society”) would be imposed. Turkey may be a current exception to this premise: the effort to create and maintain a democratic state, with constitutional protections for non-Muslim citizens, has so far been successful. But religious uprisings “have been a feature of the Turkish secular state since its inception,” and the pressure brought by Muslims to eradicate all traces of secularism and other Western “influences” continues, due to an “abiding interest in guarding and maintaining the purity of the House of Islam”.

    Besides, they attack other Muslims.

Everything we hold dear to us is at stake, trust me on that.

I agree this one is walking like a duck, but let us wait till it quacks.

Glorietta II (the Mall bombing) appears to have been an accident. DJB Rizalist and MLQIII have posted a number of blogs stating authorities and all evidence point to a dumb accident.

As Michelle says, there is a connection here (provided the investigation does point at Abu Sayyaf which despite the caution noted above I strongly suspect) between such activities and global jihadism.

Operation Bojinka which eventually became the plan executed on 9/11 was hatched in Manila, Khalid Sheikh Mohd plotted the assassination of Pope JPII while in Manila (and coming up with Bojinka) and ran a test run of Bojinka killing some people on a JAL flight out of Manila.

    feebiebabe,

Read Philippine Commentary and Manuel Quezon III’s blogs. They have posts where the authorities are not so certain of it being a bomb. DJB Rizalist at Philippine Commentary does an extensive review of technical documentation on explosions. With an eye towards a rather unsophisticated explosion or device.

In addition there were reports swabbings of the scene did not turn up any of the usual suspects in such explosions.

Manuel Quezon III also reports of a small fire in a restaurant at the scene a week or two earlier and speculated that may have damaged the restaurant’s natural gas supply.

As See-Dubya states the final report on Glorietta II is not out yet, we’ll see.

That may not even be a viable policy here. When you have a sect of people who actively target even members of their own sect for not believing exactly the same, it does not exactly inspire confidence. Terrorism only works if people are terrified. I have enough faith in the American people to believe that we would resist but we should choose our friends wisely. As for me personally, all comment spam will be ignored until our gracious hostess grows tired of the constant interruption and he will be forced to go back to his leftist base and cry to people who care about how they were not allowed to spam threads here and those mean old righties banned him. Outstanding point. I believe they have left. I guess these bastards didn’t get the memo.

By the way, there is a picture I’m looking for, was the front cover of VOM (Voice of Martyrs) magazine that showed this 5 or 6 year old girl holding up a sign that said “STOP KILLING CHRISTIANS”. Think she was Filipino or Indonesian, not for sure. But the picture stops you dead in your tracks. I’ll link to it here one way or the other. I’ll scan it if I have to. It’s just one of the most stunning pictures I’ve ever seen.

Two close friends of mine have married Manila-born goddesses over the past two years. I had the pleasure of meeting scores of their relatives at the respective wedding celebrations. These new Filipino friends of ours are some of the most genuine, good hearted and loyal souls I have met outside of the good ol’ US of A.

This war on Islamic Terror is not the first time good Americans and good Filipinos have stood together, fought together and spilled blood together. The stories of American military (including Filipino-Americans) and Filipino special forces vs. the Imperial Japanese war machine (from Melbourne to Bataan to Cabanatuan) are both extremely sorrowful and inspiring.

One of my favorite stories regards the Filipino special forces who demanded to be dropped in behind Japanese lines to gather the intel critical for a Luzon invasion. The average height and weight of a US infantryman back then was, something like 5′5″, 150 lbs. The average specs for a Filipino fighter was considerably less. So, in order to parachute the Filipino special ops accurately, they had to be weighted down with an extra 50 lbs on their persons, otherwise, “they would be blown back to Australia!”

The story continues, that after they landed back on their soil, you did NOT want to be Japanese.

Most of the Muslim problems in the Philippines come from the Southern Island areas (Mindanao and Basilan) where the major issues have been going on since the guerilla warfare began in 1969.

In reality, however, the Muslims have been evading Spanish and American colonialism for 300 years. It was the the policies of the post-1946, Christian-dominated Philippine state that led to the antagonism because of the wave of Christians coming from the Northern Islands to settle the majority Muslim southern Islands.

It is only the appearance of the militant group the Abu Sayyaf in 1995 that has caused more problems because of their well publicized kidnappings and beheadings of Christians. Both the MNLF and the MILF have condemned the activities of the Abu Sayyaf.

The Abu Sayyaf are by far the smallest of the three Muslim groups and the ones the U.S. armed forces have been invited to help the Philippine Army eradicate.
