In reality, however, the Muslims have been evading Spanish and American colonialism for 300 years. It was the the policies of the post-1946, Christian-dominated Philippine state that led to the antagonism because of the wave of Christians coming from the Northern Islands to settle the majority Muslim southern Islands. It is only the appearance of the militant group the Abu Sayyaf in 1995 that has caused more problems because of their well publicized kidnappings and beheadings of Christians. Both the MNLF and the MILF have condemned the activities of the Abu Sayyaf. The Abu Sayyaf are by far the smallest of the three Muslim groups and the ones the U.S. armed forces have been invited to help the Philippine Army eradicate. These new Filipino friends of ours are some of the most genuine, good hearted and loyal souls I have met outside of the good ol' US of A. This war on Islamic Terror is not the first time good Americans and good Filipinos have stood together, fought together and spilled blood together. The stories of American military (including Filipino-Americans) and Filipino special forces vs. the Imperial Japanese war machine (from Melbourne to Bataan to Cabanatuan) are both extremely sorrowful and inspiring.
