A sanctimonious liberal (redundancy alert!) blogger excoriates various conservatives who all presumably own massive, gas-guzzling vehicles like the Ford F-150:
As the American economy falls to pieces, oil is hovering in the $100 per barrel range and gas prices are a few days away from shattering all-time high records. Forecasters are predicting that gas will surpass $3.22 per gallon by next week. Mad Money’s Jim Cramer told Chris Matthews last week that gas prices might top $4 per gallon within the next six weeks.
Even with this brutal economic news to serve as an incentive, will Michelle Malkin, Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and their ilk sacrifice for the war effort by purchasing less Islamofascist gasoline for their Ford F-150 Microphalluses? No way. Too moonbatty. Devising new and hilariously clever agitprop words like “Defeatocrats” is clearly more patriotic than actually addressing the principle source of global and domestic instability: oil and gasoline.
The blogger, one Bob Cesca, published his post at the Huffington Post, founded by the Queen of gas-guzzling Gulfstream Liberals, Arianna Huffington. Yes, the same Arianna Huffington who was caught driving this Chevy Suburban beauty to get to the Sierra Club’s national summit in San Francisco a few years ago:

I am to guess that I would be one of your “ilk” and guess what I am not swearing off anything until the Reverend Al Gore gets rid of his house get’s off the gulfstreams and gets rid of his SUV’s.

Larry King asked Al Gore what kind of car he drives. Mr. Gore answered by saying he drove a “Lexus hybrid”. I found the NY Times review of the Lexus hybrid from about a year or so ago and the Times review said the Lexus hybrid is a gas guzzler that gets terrible mileage and has no savings over the nonhybrid Lexus. The NY Times review also said that the Lexus hybrid is absurdly expensive and a waste of money and that nobody should consider the Lexus hybrid a “green car”. So when the MSM is busy canonizing Mr. Gore, why doesn’t anybody ask him why he does not drive a Prius?
And um…what kind of car does Bob Cesca drive? Anyone know?
Obviously, he loaned it to his doper son to drive, at 100 mph.

I have seen a study that indicates that conservatives over 40 (maybe 50) years of age are far more likely to drive a Prius than their young liberal counterparts. While I believe that global warming is propaganda, I am a conservative who believes in saving natural resources when I can. (The liberals love to yell about things that other people should do.)
I drive a 4Runner. She gets pretty thirsty. But she’s mine and I ain’t give her up for nobody. Especially, since I have some two-faced hypocrite trying to tell me how I should live my life.

I bet these losers are so proud of themselves. Heck, I was forced to get a smog check in order to get my tags renewed (because these nuts) and it cost $50 and change. Problem???? I got it down the week the fires started here in So. Cal so all their efforts went up in smoke. I should get a refund.
1. I think the weird nicknames devised by conservatives on this site is incredibly annoying. I get “cRusty” and “Randy” an awful lot. “Dhimmicrats” and “Defeatocrats” are also obnoxious. I mean, attack my ideas and thoughts without resorting to silly name calling.
2. Regardless of what Al Gore and Arianna Huffington drive, Cesca is right in that conserving gas is truly patriotic. Whether it’s buying a car with good gas mileage or walking the half-mile to the corner store instead of driving, conservation by millions of Americans would make us less dependent on non-friendly countries like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
Unfortunately, I think that Americans, both liberal and conservative, are too stuck in their habits to make any sort of change.
So, yeah, the Cesca thing being on the Huffington Post is certainly rich in irony. And targeting conservatives strikes me as silly. But his point about gas consumption is right on.
Honestly, Michelle, don’t you understand that liberals are SPECIAL. They don’t have to follow the rules they espouse because they CARE more than the rest of us do. They are more CONCERNED than the rest of us. They want to HELP people, while the rest of us are just greedy, selfish consumers. Yes, they may drive big Suburbans, but they drive them to IMPORTANT events where they talk about how concerned they are and how much they care. They have no intention of adopting the green lifestyles they espouse because they have “caring offsets.”
They want credit for their empty rhetoric, dammit, and they want it right now.

I love the sanctimonious liberals telling us how to control our consumption when they drive the most fuel inefficient vehicles their money can buy. For the record our household drives a Nissan X-terra (for me to make the 12 miles one way to the base, which is 10 miles from the city limits) and Sentra (for the wife to commute 3 miles one way to her job). Yes the X-terra has actually been driven off paved roads. You should have seen the gas guzzlers the liberals in Ketchum and Sun Valley drive around town (lots of Hummers).

I won’t take the too easy opportunity to point out the Global Warming hypocrisy of former Vice President Al Gore’s son being whisked away from jail in the back seat of a Maserati Quattraporte, the $116,500+ four-door luxury sports sedan produced by one of Italy’s storied sports car makers. (Oops, guess I just did).
Anyway, what makes me mad is young Gore didn’t buckle up before his sister punched the gas pedal and made that lovely piece of Italian go-fast machinery produce the glorious sound of that 4.2 liter DOHC 400 horsepower V-8 under its hood! You can view the video here and listen for yourself.
By the way, the EPA numbers for the Quattroporte are 13 mpg city and 18 mph highway, which isn’t bad for a highly stressed, sophisticated powerplant. Don’t know what the carbon footprint is, but I guess it’s an environmental equivalent of an Italian boot, made of the finest leathers, of course.
Chevy Chase pulled the same crap. Deriding the evil GOPers and their SUV’s, until it was revealed that among the many cars he owned one was an SUV.
He said HE needed his for his children’s outings with friends.

In any case, liberal Democrats are the WORST on the environment, especially at the local level, because they so badly want tax revenue at any cost. In Fairfax County, VA liberal politicians try to get as much high density development as they can for more tax revenue. So entire wooded tracts are cut down and rezoned for more tax revenue. Older neighborhoods with huge trees are cleared for new high density development with no trees at all. But if they buy Toyota Priuses for the County, then they think they are “environmentalists.”

Hey, Gabe, don’t worry. Since conservatives drive all those big vehicles around, and not liberals, we’ve got it made in Fairfax County. Those type of vehicles are all over the place here….and around the beltway. We should be okay as a “red state”.
My carbon footprint must be HUGE with a full-size Bronco & an F-150. They are both late 90’s models so you know they aren’t fuel efficient. One of the reasons we have these trucks is just to tick people off. I’m not sure which one is the “Microphallus” edition though :/

But until you start picking up the tab, please note that I don’t give a rat’s behind what you think about what we do with our money.
One more thing. Why aren’t liberals blaming Nancy Pelosi for the high gas prices? President Bush doesn’t make the laws; Congress does. Since liberals control both houses of Congress, it seems like they are the ones to blame for the high prices.

I’ve never understood how and why conservatives let the environmental/conservation issue get away. Efficiency, asset preservation, good stewardship, conservation…these are all solid concepts that make perfect common sense and fit in nicely with the general notion of conservatism. An interesting alliance has developed recently between the generally conservative hooks and bullets crowd (my family) and the generally liberal eco crowd (also my family) with respect to efforts to conserve and maintain the environment.
Virginia is hilarious as a state. All the liberals in NOVA scream about global warming but the state taxes new cars at an extraordinary rate. The upshot is that the NOVA liberals drive junkers with bad gas mileage and polution.
I going to hand in my V-8 the same time I start having tofu for Thanksgiving.

Hmmm…to use moonbat rationale, I put my butt on the line to supposedly “fight for oil” in “wars for oil”, so I have no problem driving my big-ass F-150 (yes, I actually do own an F-150). The way I figure it, if my life was indeed placed on the line for the oil, I (and every other member of the military) can drive whatever I want to drive.
I love getting lectured at the pump, too. I can’t wait to flame spray a moonbat the next time it happens.
I will give up my incandescent light bulbs as soon as I give up my second amendment right.

We don’t actually import a lot of oil from Iraq since their infrastructure is so shot. And even if we did, I certainly don’t want to pour any more money into Iraq than we already have. Does anyone honestly think Iraq will be all that stable or friendly in the future?
Englishqueen, my mom just bought a Saturn VUE. Personally, I hate it. She loves it. Of course I’m more concerned with the speaker system than anything else. You have much higher priorities than the maximum volume at which one can hear music.

I take the bus and I ride the subway. Anything shorter than 1.5 miles (assuming sobriety), I walk.
Conservation of non-renewable natural resources is a good thing, especially with the population of the U.S. exploding.
Population growth is a quadruple whammy on non-renewable natural resources: 1. The per capita slice of the natural resources pie decreases automatically with population, 2. The rate of depletion increases usually, 3. Cost rises, and 4. The resource may become unavailable domestically in the future, or even as an import.
I want to speak in defense of big US built automobiles. They give you comfort, safety, durability,reasonable economy and, if needed,you can haul six adults and a trunk full of junk.
I am in the oil business and drive 40-50,000 miles per year.I think of the F-150 as an all purpose economy truck. There are bigger F-trucks if you need em but I seldom do.
I am not a shill for Ford but I have driven Lincolns for thirty years for personal road and field use. You can cruise the highways at a high rate of noise in comfort all day at 24-27 mpg. When you leave the pavement, the rear wheel drive, fitted with studded snow tires, can bust snow drifts and negotiate muddy rutted lease roads right along with 4WD vehicles.
I have driven my last three Lincoln TC, 180,000, 418,000, 286,000(and still humming) miles. I had front end suspension re-built at around 200,000 on the last two but none required major mechanical repairs of engine or transmission.
What else can you ask of a car?

If that is true, I am going to wet myself from laughing!
For me, it’s not an issue that’s getting away, it’s about control.
I’m all for conservation. I turn the heat down significantly when we leave the house, my husband takes the bus to work, we moved to a neighborhood closer to our families (who watch our son) and near enough to my work that I walk (read: right across the street). We turn lights off in rooms we’re not using, and we only re-fuel our car about once every two weeks.
The difference is - *WE* made those choices. Independent of a mandate, a guilt tax, or windfall from Al Gore purchasing some carbon offsets.
With regards to efficiency, the technology implemented in the American industrial/manufacturing/power sector provides some of the CLEANEST energy and production in the world. And it will continue to do so, provided Kyoto - which would lead to millions of lost jobs and a trashed economy - is not ratified here (especially since some of the biggest polluters - China and India - are not bound by Kyoto at all).
And while we’re on the subject of energy - where’s the condemnation for the liberals, NIMBYs and BANANAs who work tireless to block the production of alternative energy sources? They oppose hydroelectric dams (might hurt the fish), wind power (might hurt the birds or block Ted Kennedy’s view of the ocean), and nuclear power (good enough for Europe, who we should emulate on all other fronts execpt nuclear power)
But I have a really big problem with celebrities who live in houses with bathrooms bigger than my apartment, money coming out of their rear ends, or liberals who are all for privacy (unless it’s an issue they dislike or disagree with) deciding THEY are the supreme deciders on what we do with the things we pay for - my home, my car, my food, etc.
Me, too. 9 mpg is out-effing-standing!

BTW, us good conservatives like to be efficient and save money, so CFL bulbs are a no-brainer in that regard. Lots and lots of dough to be saved and made in the coming years in “going green”. You stick with what you know though soap.
You know, if these complainers would stop going 75-80 mph on the highways, which reduces mpg 25%, they might save some at the gas pump. Nothing seems sillier than seeing these big SUVs flying down the highway, switching lanes constantly and alternately hitting the brakes and accelerator just so they can get where they going faster so they can spend a few minutes extra time complaining about how high the gas prices are.

I’m a native Cape Codder. I appreciate pretty ocean views. But Senator Kennedy and Representative Delahunt’s NIMBY positions on the proposed turbines are ridiculous. Wind power is clean and efficient. I would be proud to be from an area with turbines. It’s a shame their wealthy contributors (Nantucket Sound beachfront property is pricey) stand in the way.

I live in Texas, and I drive a car built by an American company. It is not a hybrid, but it was built here in the US by American workers.
My ride is a 4WD Ford F 250 Diesel crew cab. It has a couple hundred pound brush guard on the front so I can get to places where the deer and the antelope play. Those deer and antelope are delicious.
Now my truck does have a bit of an appetite, but it will protect me much better with its 8000 pounds in an accident than your under 2000 pound hybrid. So, while I will pay more for fuel, I am much safer than you will ever be in your car of choice.
Of course, I can haul all sorts of stuff on one trip, where your hybrid would take 20 or so trips to get the same thing done. Not very fuel efficient there, I guess.
And here in Texas, fuel is a bit cheaper. That’s because here and along the Gulf Coast we refine most of the oil that you refuse to refine in your area. You really don’t mind refineries, as long as they are not anywhere near you and someone else deals with the dirt. We also still drill quite a bit of oil here, again something that you wouldn’t want to pursue in your own backyard.
And watch out confusing patriotism with environmentalism. They are not they same and recently they seem to be at opposite ends of the spectrum. My guess is that you have never served a day in the military or other service that involved making a sacrifice for your country. Worshipping Al Gore as your new Budda is not patriotism. But you are certainly free to do that, because people like me preserved that freedom for people like you.
Stick to your hybrid, Mr. Cesca, eat your tofu and organic veggies and mind your own damn business. If you shut up, maybe we’ll get you some flyover cheese to go with your West Coast whine.
The International Energy Agency released two reports this week. One downgraded oil demand projections, because the price of oil had caused a drop in demand. The second reported that October 2007 was the highest ever oil production month on record. And that is why oil stocks have taken a tumble lately. I expect the price of oil to drop.
Oh, BTW Alphonse, the fertility of the US is just slightly below replacement level. It’s been below replacement for a few decades, now.

(I don’t even mention my 1977 CJ-5 that gets at best 15 mpg & doesn’t have a catalytic converter)

soap, somewhere in your last comment you make a good point about China. All pressure possible needs to be applied to China and India regarding their enviro practices (or lack thereof). A huge chunk of their economic growth is the result of classic “freeriding”. I.e., the prices of their goods does not anywhere near reflect the true costs to produce them. I and many others here would like to see less dependence on oil … but the environmental left has tied things up in the courts for years that would have helped that situation never get to the current levels of seriousness … no wind farms, no solar farms, no nuclear power plants, no clean coal plants …
There have been no new refineries opened in this country for 31 years (last one online in 1976) and no new refineries built in CA in 72 years (1935) where the gasoline usage is more than anywhere else in the country …
The hypocrisy exhibited by all of these holier than thou types telling us we have to become second class citizens while they still go around in comfort is absurd …
Personally … I would suggest that everyone simply try to reduce their gasoline usage by 1 or 2 tankfulls per month … soon the lower demand would cause the price to go back down …
Then put the environmentalist extemists out of business and drill off shore and in ANWR so we can put an end to all dependence on oil imports while developing all the other sources of energy for the future …

You complain about gas prices? Then get your Dem leaders to authorize more refineries here in the U.S.. Simple, our problems are solved.
Another thing about the wind farms: It takes twice as much concrete to make a wind farm that makes as much energy as a Nuke plant, as it takes to MAKE the nuke plant. The Euros have no problem living with Nuke energy, so why does the left? By using 2x the concrete to make a wind farm, I believe that would NOT qualify for ‘CLEAN’ energy because the dust from cement plants make one of the biggest greenhouse additives than even motorists!

I did that over 10 years ago by working from my home office (no commute). I have a 2003 SUV, but only 22K miles on it. I’m sure you’re asking why I drive an SUV? Because I live at 7,100′ elevation in the mountains and need the all wheel drive and the clearance to get around. No dinky Prius with a 4″ clearance will get me through a winter. We get over 200″ of snow in a typical year.
I also combine trips and errands to save time/money.
So, to all you ASSuming liberals, not all of us who own/drive an SUV are gas guzzling morons.

My father taught me about waste. He always used to say, “People have no idea how precious water is until they don’t have it.”
That quote has stuck with me all my life. I’ve always considered any waste to be too much. So it is with gasoline, too. I drive a Camry (I’m 6′4″, no Pius or Corolla for me) because it gets respectable mileage. I use low cost flourescent light bulbs. I conserve where ever I can.
But the nerve of these holy-than-thou, liberal brain-donors just gets my blood boiling. How dare they they tell me I’m not conserving enough? You can only conserve so much! If everyone used low cost flourescent lights, power usage would eventually climb as more offices and houses are built. Then what? Yes! Build a new power plant! Not here in CA, though.
And an observation - as I recall, the liberals were always on about raising gas prices by, wait for it, taxing it heavily. All during the Clintoon administration, we heard nothing but liberal rhetoric about how gas prices were too low. They wanted to raise the gas tax. NOW the prices are where the liberals wanted them to be 10 years ago and they’re complaining! Excuse me? Oh that’s right, the evil oil companies are making profit so that’s bad. If the gov’t taxes it to a high price, that’s good!

it’s not just California…. and I live 5 miles from a very large wind farm. ease up there my desert brother we take enough heat for all the moonbats here. I conserve and recycle thats a no brainer it save you $$$$.

Someone up the thread made a comment about being passed by gas guzzling trucks and SUVs at 80 mph.
What you have to factor in is, those trucks may be carrying personnel or equipment to a drilling or producing well a hundred or two hundred miles away that is shut down at $2000-$3000/hour. The cost of an extra gallon of gas is a good trade off.

I have a two-part answer to Bob Cesca:
- Just drill and refine, baby. Oil wouldn’t be anywhere near $100/barrel if we were tapping all our domestic sources rather than saying that somewhere north of half can’t be touched, and gasoline wouldn’t be north of $3/gallon if we had a proper amount of refining capacity.
- If you see a slightly-beat-up 2004 Subaru Outback Sport with a driver giving you an Italian salute, that would be me. Oh, and it’s a stick, so there’s an extra MPG or two for you (with a light-foot approach, I can break 30 mpg on the highway).

Whoever brought up Nukes is right on point. The hard core eco-types made a big mistake in the 70’s on this issue and we’re paying for it now. I think France generates close to 80% of its power from nukes and is pretty close to being energy independent. I also saw recently that the founder of Greenpeace has joined forces with a conservative type on this issue. They are touring the country trying to educate and gin up support for cranking back up the nuclear power industry in this country so we can get more plants built.
