White Flag Dems pass Iraq withdrawal bill
Time to bring it out again…

Just about an hour ago, the Dems passed their Iraq withdrawal bill, tying $50 billion in war funding to a demand that President Bush start bringing troops home in coming weeks (never mind that it’s already starting) with a mandated timetable of ending combat by December 2008:
House Democrats pushed through a $50 billion bill for the Iraq war Wednesday night that would require President Bush to start bringing troops home in coming weeks with a goal of ending combat by December 2008.
The legislation, passed 218-203, was largely a symbolic jab at Bush, who already has begun reducing force levels but opposes a congressionally mandated timetable on the war. And while the measure was unlikely to pass in the Senate — let alone overcome a presidential veto — Democrats said they wanted voters to know they weren’t giving up.
“The fact is, we can no longer sustain the military deployment in Iraq,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “Staying there in the manner that we are there is no longer an option.”
Translation of Pelosi’s remarks: “Stop pestering me, Code Pink! I beg you to stop!”
The White House says it will veto the bill; the GOP reportedly will back the president. Nancy was sweating it for a bit this evening:
The bill represents about a quarter of the $196 billion Bush requested for combat operations in the 2008 budget year, which began Oct 1.
It would compel an unspecified number of troops to leave Iraq within 30 days, a requirement Bush is already on track to meet as he begins in coming weeks to reverse the 30,000 troop buildup he ordered earlier this year. It also sets a goal of ending combat by Dec. 15, 2008, and states that money included in the bill should be used to redeploy troops and “not to extend or prolong the war.”
The measure also would set government-wide standards on interrogation, effectively barring the CIA from using such harsh techniques as waterboarding, which simulates drowning.
The bill was on shaky ground this week, after some liberal Democrats said they were concerned it was too soft and would not force Bush to end the war. Conservative Democrats said they thought it went too far and would tie the hands of military commanders.
The bill’s prospects brightened somewhat after three leading anti-war Democrats announced they would support it. California Reps. Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee and Maxine Waters said they had agreed to swing behind it because the bill explicitly states the money should be used to bring troops home.
But still uncertain the bill would pass, Pelosi on Wednesday delayed a vote by several hours while she met with supporters and asked them to help her round up votes.
Fifteen Democrats broke ranks and joined 188 Republicans in opposing the measure. Four Republicans joined 214 Democrats in supporting it.

John Boehner’s office e-mailed the following statement following the vote:
“By Christmas, some 3,000 American troops will return home from Iraq after achieving remarkable success in our fight against al Qaeda. And how is Congress welcoming them back? By passing yet another politically-motivated measure that cuts off funding for those continuing to serve our nation in Iraq and hamstrings the commanders who are leading them to victory. This measure will never be signed into law, and it represents yet another failure for Democratic leaders intent on putting politics before accomplishment.
“Congress would be better served by sending the President the long-overdue veterans and troops funding bill, which enjoys broad, bipartisan support in both the House and Senate. But the Majority leadership has played politics with this critical legislation, stalling its completion to take up today’s cynical proposal to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Iraq. Consequently, returning troops and their families will face more hurdles and take more time to get the housing and health care benefits they deserve – all thanks to Congress.
“Under General Petraeus’ strategy, our troops are routing al Qaeda in Iraq, improving security for the Iraqi people, and laying the foundation for critical political reconciliation in that country. Congress should not undermine this success and risk having al Qaeda stand back up. Instead, Members of both parties should recognize that the Petraeus plan is working, continue to solidify our troops’ gains, and work to bring them home after victory, not defeat.”

The NYT covers tonight’s “rancorous debate” on the House floor:
In two hours of rancorous debate on the House floor, Republicans stressed the recent progress in Iraq while Democrats said that the political situation remained bleak and that it was time to pull out American troops.
“The sacrifice of our troops was simply not met by the actions of the Iraqi government,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California. “This legislation today offers something fundamentally different than what President Bush is proposing, a 10-year war, a war without end costing trillions of dollars. It provides the tools to our troops so they can get the job done. It also presents a strategy that will bring them home, responsibly, honorably, safely and soon.”
…For Republicans, the debate provided another chance to accuse the Democrats of wasting time. “Today, if my calculations are right, we will have our 58th vote on trying to restrain the commanders in the field in Iraq,” said Representative Roy Blunt of Missouri, the Republican whip. “The Democrats appear to never get tired of foregone conclusions, to never get tired of doing the same thing over and over again with the same result — the ultimate Groundhog Day of legislation that doesn’t get us anywhere.”
The White House also hammered the Democrats in Congress. Dana Perino, the White House press secretary, promised a veto and accused the Democrats of ignoring gains in Iraq.
You’ll love this bit of editorializing in the last paragraph of the NYT piece:
The debate over war financing also provided a forum for Republicans to praise recent developments in Iraq, including what they called a decline in violence.
“…what they called a decline in violence.”
“They” are not the only ones calling it that.

They support the troops my arse!
Let me guess, Ron Paul was one of four.
Meanwhile, soldiers in Iraq are out there fighting on behalf of these creeps.
A. The troops are already coming home.
B. The surge is successful, and they are starting to bring the troops home.
C. The Democrats are more interested in re-living Viet Nam than winning the war against terrorists.
D. The Democrats will be the first to bellyache when (not if) we are attacked again on our own soil.
E. Everything will be Bush’s fault that cannot be traced to global warming/cooling/whining.
These cowards frighten me as much as OBL.
Oddly enough Paul voted no
I think for Paul and Kucinich and stark the problem with the Bill is that it isnt an immediate withdrawl
And if you check the roll, Ron Paul voted against…
It takes a special kind of idiot to vote to cut off funding for operations that by any measure are helping to quell the violence in Iraq.
The fact that Democrats have a vested interest in having things go badly in Iraq is probably one of the most nauseating things I’ve ever seen in politics. To actually wish to benefit politically by things going badly in a war zone is about as low as any political party can sink.
And the hell of it is, the media will cover for them and they’ll never be forced to pay for this treachery.
Can we get these dufus public “servants” to do a drug test before they’re allowed to vote on something? If they aren’t smoking crack, they’re huffing Windex or something…and whatever it is they continue to waste my time and tax money with this “symbolic” CRAP!!
I know, I stand corrected. Big shocker (no sarc).
Barbara Lee…aye aye aye,
I think the goal should be ending combat in congress and redeploying all of the politicians.
As I said in a past post. I have a t-shirt that wear often. It reads on the back ” In the face of Terror and Murder the call for Peace is NOT PATRIOTIC, IT’S COWARDICE!” That is what these Democrats are, a bunch of whinny sissy panty waistes cowards. I say this without fear of contradiction. They make this Marine want to puke. As PBoilermaker says ” They support the troops my arse!
Democrats are losers and saboteurs, it’s as close to hating America as you can get.
Nancy and gang will just embolden the jihadists. I’m sure OBL is a registered Democrat. I just wonder if his absentee ballot ever gets mail out in time to vote for his favorite girl in SF and her enablers.
Act 2 of, “The Democrat of the Opera.”
This congress is a disgrace pure and simple. Nancy and Dingy Harry just love spitting in the faces of our brave men and women. Then in the same decietful smile they, say they support them. They would rather throw in with the jihadist then to have our brave troops backs. Oh no wait! I forget they do have our troops backs when they are palcing the dagger then pulling it out everytime with these treasonous votes.
That white flag is getting pinker and pinker…heh
We need to install a bunch of gumball machines in the halls of congress …
I’ve come to the conclusion that’s the only way these sorry excuses for elected officials will ever get enough gumballs to do the right thing …

Now didn’t Madame Nancy know you can’t wash your whites with your colors. Now when you mix your pink panties with your whites you are just asking for trouble. She should have talked to Hillary or maybe really asked Osama Bin Laden how he keeps his whites so white.
The Democrats may be too late to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. They can pull the troops out but they can’t raise those dead jihadis from the grave. Of course, from their perspective, a victory in Iraq would be the turd in the punchbowl of the Democratic Convention next year. It will be hard to sell defeatism if we’ve already won. Hillary’s only hope would be to do a Slick Willy and claim she was for sticking and winning all along.
The Dems have relished and celebrated the death of every American soldier since Vietnam. Do we expect different?
How can one consider the modern Democratic party anything but pure evil? They’ve consistently attacked the troops as stupid, Nazis, and terrorists. They’ve accused them of bombing villages and murdering civilians in cold blood. They’ve admitted (as if we didn’t know) that positive developments in Iraq are “bad” news for Democrats.
They’ve clearly woken up and prayed for attacks on our troops and on civilians in Iraq to turn public opinion against the war enough to give them the political leverage they need, and they’ve desperately tried to hurt the effort and cause the deaths of troops to have been in vain.
I’m giving as brief a summary as I possibly can, but I could literally go on for hours about the actions of elected Democrats, especially the leadership, that you can’t categorize as anything but evil.
It really started going downhill when you had Democrats band together to call Bush a liar on WMDs, after they’d spent 13 years making the case themselves, including in 1998 when Clinton attacked for the same reasons. The fact that these Dems started this in the fall of 2003, because they had about a year until the 2004 elections and they needed a reason to divide the country (or else not stand a chance). They succeeded in their dishonest smear of the president, primarily because the media is in their pocket and you never heard these Democrats (the only real liars in that situation) being busted, even on Fox News (other than weak attempts by Hannity).
Just disgusting all over the place.
I think I was happier when I paid less attention to politics.
Darn surrender monkey politics again. What are Scary Reid and Nanny Pelosi smoking anyway?
Castrating Victory and Orchestrating Defeat … Both are “fool” time jobs …
I’m sorry, but isn’t the definition of insanity, “Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result each time ‘, or something like that? If that is true, then doesn’t this:
prove without a doubt that Pelosi, Reed and the rest of these traitorous Democrats are, indded, insane? If proof of insanity isn’t a reason to have them removed, just what, then, does it take?
I live in what is considered a conservative town with what is also considered a conservative paper-Augusta, GA. Anyway, the good news out of Iraq has not been on page 1 or 3 where the bad news was but back on page 7 or 8 (we generally have no more than 10 front pages at the most). The good news does pop up on Fox but that’s about it. However, these idiot dims and repubs are enough to make blood pop out of my eyes. I’m watching the rerun of the Britt Hume show and that idiot Rahm Emmanuel is yapping about the “poor, overextended troops who need to be redeployed home”. What idiots and these tools think they’re really supporting the troops by pulling the rug out from under them. Do they truly believe that the bulk of the military think they really do support them?
Like it was in Vietnam, the enemy takes heart with their allies in Congress. Instead of giving up, they will hang in there, waiting for eventual victory. I can already see another “Saigon style” evacuation. History repeats itself to those who never learn.
It’s easy. They know those troops got called home yesterday, but most of the media isn’t reporting it. SO, they pass this bill, then just watch, next week, the press will start reporting that troops are coming home, and they can say “See? we brought the troops home!”
They think they can fool the sheeple into believing this lol.
Good grief! The Pull-Out Pushers certainly are persistent–like cockroaches. And like MM noted, “never mind that it’s already started.”
As my mom used to say, “You just make me tired.”
RetFireman, you noticed the same thing I did. The Dems are officially insane. They keep doing the same thing over and over again hoping for a different outcome. No wonder they can’t get anything of value done. Here is the quote from Albert Einstein:
I love this quote from the Washington Post reporter:
Boy, wouldn’t they love to see that happen!
They sure had no problem declaring defeat without waiting for a long-term trend. Besides, we’re not asking them to declare victory. Just report the news as it occurs – good or bad. It would be like the Wall Street Journal reporting on the stock market when it is down, but ignoring the days it goes up unless it has an irreversible upward momentum. Or it would be like a weatherman only predicting rainy days in his forcast unless there was a long-term trend for sunny weather? What a ridiculous way to report the news!
There is a latrine on one of our Combat Outposts in which a Soldier has written the words “Win or Die.” Contrary to normal Soldier behavior, no one has added to, changed, crossed out, commented on, or attacked those words. I guess now we can amend it to read “Win or Die… or quit.”
How disgusting that I can’t rely on my Congress to look out for our national interests and future, or even the interests of me and my brothers that are doing the work.
Where do we go to buy a new Congress?
I wish I could ignore the whole disgusting body, but they’re too dangerous.
Today, sign me “discouraged”.
The Bush hating democraps in our congress are fools. Talk about your do nothing legislature!
Very good information at pat’s site and the long war journal too. Thanks for the links.
Graysonret, I thought the same thing. The Dems and all anti-war groups have been clammering about the comparison between Vietnam and Iraq. Well, I wonder what the death toll will be if we have to do that evacuation? Could this be a self-fulfilling prophesy by the Left?
The Democrat Congress is doing the same thing they did in the Seventies. As soon as they cut off funding, the North Vietnamese army just rolled over the South. Take away American protection and the same thing will happen in Iraq.
And if this isn’t enough, Pelosi has the (lack of) brains to say:
In other words, Failure is the ONLY option!!
Absolutely disgusting!!!!
The Democrats are trying to blackmail President Bush and the military into a time-table withdrawal…and for gawd’s sake hurry up before they have to concede altogether that we’ve won in Iraq and Afghanistan.
That tactic worked during Vietnam. We had the NVA and VC by the short and curlies, but the Democrat-controlled Congress wouldn’t have any of it, and cut off the funding. Vietnam was not lost on the battlefield, but in the halls of our own government. The communist-led genocide in the aftermath was one of the most horrible consequences in history.
The consequences of doing an about face in this war, would be far more catastrophic.
The Left has mostly given up on the Vietnam analogy, (Read: “quagmire”) since all of the hackneyed excuses didn’t pan out in the face of the facts.
Harry and his surrender monkeys may want to abdicate, but don’t expect the rest of us to follow suit.
It kills me how the democrat’s road to victory always begins with a sniveling retreat. No vision or spine, these people are governing from the backseat.
Thank you for a that smile. A winning line indeed.
It disgusts me that there are people in this country that want us to lose. If we were nuked, they’d probably be ecstatic.
ArmoredCav, I couldn’t agree more. If not for you guys I would throw up my hands and just say screw it all.
However, I know in my heart that you guys are giving your all and that you deserve our all. Our support, our kind words of appreciation and you deserve that we keep our heads in the game. As much as I would like to turn away from the bad news about our elected officials, I can’t. It wouldn’t be prudent. You guys deserve better than that. I promise to do all that is within my power to change it. Thanks for all that you do! God Bless.
And they have “irreversible momentum” in which one of the congressional districts in the USA? Can I move to that district where they don’t NEED police because there is irreversible momentum?
Actually that place is called Heaven and I’m pretty sure Heaven isn’t here.
Armored Cav…
Win or Die. That says it all.
BTW.. Can you say which armored cav unit you are with. If so, or even it you can’t go here and let us know. It’d be an honor to help you guys out.
The Dems will take credit that their actions in congress is what is bringing troops home. Not the success of the surge and General P. but their “bold & steadfast commitment to ending this unjust war”.
What a bunch of phoney-baloneys!
So they passed a bill demanding that Bush start doing what he’s already started doing…
This will score them point with their base, since Bush has no reason to veto it. He’s already started drawing down, so why not?
Armored CAV, I’ve always liked the Patton quote: “I am a Soldier. I fight where I’m told, and I win where I fight.”
Wonder how the families of men and or women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan feel about the democrats playing politics with their lives.
If Bush has any spine at all, and/or brain power, he’d understand that it’s time for him to be a bit more Reaganesque and use the bully pulpit to explain to the American People in a primetime address why setting a date for surrender is a bad idea and why the surge is working. His poll numbers might even go up a bit, maybe.
That link from the Pat Dollard reader was awesome, I’d be interested if there was any reply and what it was. As for the Dems, they’re just giving their loon fringe their moneys worth. Sickening.
The defeatist-Democrats are now on record, pandering to leftists and attempting to micromanage the war against islamo-facism. They would give away our freedoms earned and fought for by heroes of the past just a few days ago remembered on Veteran’s Day.
I get a chuckle every time I read or hear of someone in Congress saying something like this. You would think that a sitting Congresswoman would know that we have large components of Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard that haven’t even BEEN to Durka-land. No longer an option, my martyr-making butt.
WINNING this war will always be an option, so long as we have brave men and women willing to pick up a weapon and stand on the wall.
I second that!! For those of you who didn’t click over — do it! That’s the best MSM take-down I have read in a long, long time.
Until you so-called patriots are willing to propose/enact a gas/oil tax, you are funding the enemy and that makes all your “white flag” complaints offensively trivial in comparison.
I smell a Troll
Please. Gas is what, $1 more expensive in Illinois BECAUSE of the damn taxes they put on it.
We already tax the crap outta oil/gas.
suck an egg billy boy.
AJ and his food fetish – LOL
Taze billy
Is it any surprise that a liberal would tell us that we need to fix something by… you guessed it – by taxes!!! Can you guys come up with any other way to solve a problem?
Bonsai Billy – Please explain to me how sending an additional dollar to Washington will solve anything.
Also, please explain to me how people in congress know more about fighting a war than people actually doing the job.
Have you tazed a liberal today?
Taze a liberal day! Now if I could only get the bye-in from my employer to have off. I work for a major pharmaceutical company and you know you won’t find any liberals working for a capitalistic pig like Big Pharma.

Bono, my rep, didn’t vote. She scares me sometimes, she is not as conservative as her husband was…
these morons..
I am so tired of this mess, not thinking about our troops. yeah, they support our troops. give me a break
They simply WILL NOT give up trying to insure a defeat…and specifically before the next president takes office so he or she doesn’t actually have to make real decisions. The December 2008 is soooo obvious. (Naturally they believe it will be Hitlary)
If they can’t accomplish bringing about failure in Iraq, they have very little to stand on in terms of National Security. This country might not be happy about the war but we don’t want to lose. Peolsi & Reid are invested in defeat so deep with almost no wiggle room anymore that watching them pull this crap has begun to be enjoyable rather than infuriating.
uhangtight, sent Bono an e mail this a.m. and included John Boehner’s statement.
Here is THE BIG problem as I see it.
Republicans will NEVER capitalize on the opportunities the liberals hand them on a golden platter. Time and time again the libtards stick their heads in a guillotine and Republicans will not pull the lever.
For goodness sake. Republicans can take the new look Dimocraps to task on pork, like Sean did Sunday night, but all we get from our Repubs is: *crickets chirping
Michelle called it right before she back-tracked with gumballs. They have NO BALLS.
The Democrats are the Chamberlain appeasers of the pre-WWII era. They had to believe that Hitler was telling the truth then, and they have to believe that appeasement is the way now. They have no other options.
And, their anti-military smokescreen is completely breaking down. Movies like “redacted” and “lions for lambs” are exposing the radical left for their hatred of America’s military and for their stupidity in assuming that all military people are naturally barbaric. (The left simply cannot admit the barbarism of terrorists because it makes them look utterly ignorant when it comes to reality.)
#46 This is how one family feels about it (damned mad!) and what we’re doing: I e-mailed grandson’s picture & address to friends and organizations asking for prayers and cards.
I use max words(200) & letter to the editor count (16) annually and praised local Operation Toasty Toes volunteer knitters/crocheters who send warmth and cheer overseas. They need cash for yarn and shipping. We also need publicity.
His squadron will be bombarded with cards from our retarded son’s sheltered workshop for both Thanksgiving and Christmas along w/pkgs from others.
Challenge everyone who says “they don’t support the war, but support the troops” and ask them exactly what they are doing, because you have a few practical suggestions. Shame the
bastardsliars into action.I do not think that a withdrawal of “occupation forces” means that we are giving up. I think that military commanders should take advantage of this development and focus on a special forces and army aviation based strategy and not a “policing occupation” one.
Nancy and Harry are just following their favorite slogan…’stay the course’.
Sorry. It’s sold out…and China is first on the waiting list
aj, was thinking the same.. and will .. thanks
Nancy is trying to beat Hillary to the punch…to be the first female Commander in Chief. She and
Harry can’t run congress with its 535 people. How the hell do you think thing can command 168 thousand troops?
There is so much that needs doing in DC but
it apparently will have to wait until after 2008 to get
done. If Pelosi and Reid are so set on ending the war in Iraq why don’t they personally go over there and
talk with the terrorists that are shooting at our military and ask them..nicely..to stop? They seem to
feel that is all it would take, so why are they just sitting there doing nothing?
Bless you and yours USMCgramma our prayers are
with you all.
Wolf don’t get discouraged I’ve been watching this game for 34 years (Wow! I just realized how old that sounds)and one thing I’ve learned in that time is you have to find humor in this stuff and below I’m going to give you a couple of example’s.
Rick I think your wrong on that one. The Dim’s alway’s find a way to excavate themselves deeper and deeper.
Cat I spend entirly to much time on this stuff but have’nt you noticed that the Republican strategy is that you have the postive information, hold on to it, keep your mouth shut and let the other guy think he has the opportunity to march in front of the MSM trash your effort’s and turn public opinion then about a week or two latter realese your positive information. Basicly your handing your opponent a shotgun and letting him shoot himself in the foot instead of Cheney directly shooting them in the face.
#22Pushhiawa: Democrat defeatism is not just a 20th or 21st century phenomenon. The 1864 presidential campaign was dominated by the Copperhead Democrats attempt to elect failed general George B. McClellan president on the stop the war platform. Surrender monkeyism is not new in the Democrat party.
#33 Papa Louie: Excellent analogy!
#49 flmom: “As for the DEMs. they’re just giving the loon fringe their
moneysmonkeys worth.” Fixed that for ya!Forgive me for feeding the troll, but I can’t resist…
How about we make it so we arn’t dependant on foreign oil, instead? Is drilling in Anwar, Montana, and the Gulf a good answer? Or are you going to try and turn this into a global warming arguement now, to distract from the main topic, i.e. a crapweasel Congress.
I think that Troll was just a drive by Crap(weasel) shooter.

I have much to learn on the ways of the intarwebs.
ArmoredCav stay safe over there. There are many of us praying for your safe and triumphant return to your loved ones (losing is not an option). Pass on to your “Brothers-in-Arms” there are people that actually appreciate what you do. Back in Garrison at Mountain Home AFB we are still under severe funding restriction to ensure you get what you need when you need it. You continue fighting the enemies of humanity and reason while old retried SNCOs like me fight the battle of the budget. I share your frustration at our Congress critters unfortunately I only have 2 Congressmen representing our small population of Idaho, but they continue to use their votes to support conservative issues to include winning this global war you are fighting and winning. Rest assured flaming e-mails will be flying to Queen Pelosi and Dirty Harry in response to their irresponsible behavior continuing to give aid and comfort to this nation’s enemies.
New Democrat war cry: “Bakka-bakka-bakka BAKKA-BAKKA-BAKKA Bauk!” (Said while flapping arms like chicken wings)
New Democrat motto: “Cowardice is the most important moral value! This message brought to you by the Democratic Party, unless you don’t want it to be. We will capitulate! Please forgive us!”
How much longer until we give up “Liberty or Death” or “Don’t Tread on Me!” for “We Surrender”?
The Dims painted themselves into the corner and now they’re squirming and desperate to appear to their lunatic base that they’re doing something to end the war. All the while, the war is seemingly ending in success and Bush is already bring troops home.
Bush will veto the bill and the Dims will have no choice but to send the President another bill (again) without the withdrawal mandates. At least they can tell Cindy Sheehan and Sean Penn that they tried.
I also wish Bushy would stand up to these fools. I am sick and tired of their condescending “support the troops, we want to bring them home so they can die in garrison-(ok that last part is my own view), we don’t support the troops in their torture” etc. I’ve lost a lot of respect for him and it diminishes further when he lets the dimocraps go unchallenged on their stupid, defeatist votes. Yes, they must be insane, they continue to do the same thing over and over again with the same result. I cannot ever fathom voting for another dimocrap in my life.
Ah, he is betraying the Dems! They so want to lose!

This Congress has turned out to be even more pathetic than I could have imagined last year.
Bottom line:
Fund the troops fully without pork or conditions, or you will dearly pay.
The President, Vice President and Secretary of Defense, plus our top uniformed officers and Republicans in Congress should embark on a campaign of speeches and appearances to highlight the fact that Democrats want to starve the Pentagon in a time of war. Make news, take the cycle away from them and beat them over the head with it. You think the Shamnesty reaction was impressive? Just wait and see what happens if the Dems call the President’s bluff. He ain’t bluffing, and neither are we.
Fund our troops completely and without condition, or pay the price, if you can afford it. It might be higher than you think.
It’s high noon on Pennsylvania Ave. Who will blink? (cue whistling theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly)
