Katrina...come on please people. I have a friend who has visited New Orleans in the past few months. The only people who have not made progress as far as rebuilding are the ones who are depending on the government or other people to help them rebuild. I am so tired of people not taking responsibility for their own lives and issues in addition to blaming others for their lot in life

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm over these crybabies. First they completely mismanage storm preparations and the aftermath and then blame everyone else in the nation for the completely predictable catastrophe that ensues.

That might be dismissed as business as usual, but then they reelect the same chowder heads all the while insisting that the rest of the country save them. If the people of New Orleans want the same incompetents running the city and want to rebuild below sea level, that's their business, but don't expect sympathy or money from me.

All four of the debates are east of the Mississippi? Or at least right on the bank. And yet NO complains that they didn't get to host one? I'm sorry, but what about the entire Western US? You want to talk about prejudice, let's start there.

And for the record, I don't want to talk about prejudice. The locations are fine by me. I'll just watch on TV or not watch on TV like I always do.

Katrina victims will always be victims in New Orleans.
In April 2006, my hometown of Bradford, Tn was devastated by a tornado. FEMA came in and set up a command post to help in the recovery. FEMA left after less than a week because the town was taking care of itself and there was nothing for them to do.
The local newspaper op ed page wrote that, “New Orleans could learn a lesson from Bradford.”
Ya gotta love a small town.

Thanks to all of you who really understand that the hurricane DID NOT HIT New Orleans direct. Their damage was caused by the mighty Mississippi overflowing it's banks and lack of leadership in time of need. The fact that the city is built in a bowl had a little to do with it! We here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and as far north as central Mississippi felt the brunt of this terrible storm. Biloxi took the eye and with it came over 30 ft of ocean wave from the gulf. Our ENTIRE gulf coast disappeared. We were happy getting the new orleans left over money scraps from DC. We have come back strong because of our leaders. You are all right about corruption. NO just got more billions, but they cannot find where the first billions went. These new billions are to help bring back the NO evacuees who mostly are happy where they are. Note: when a dozen folks run for mayor of a destroyed city you have to ask is this good citizenship or did they see the billions that were up for grabs.
If anyone wants to make donations, please use the churches of Mississippi who have been instrumental in our recovery.

I have a friend that works for an agency that put these
evacuees in apartments here in TX and oversees the
apartments (also some houses.) You should hear her
on this subject. They do not take care of this housing
and scream for more and more help. They have lived
in LBJs Great Society for so many generations and
listened to so many liberals telling them they are
entitled that the will not help themselves and because
they haven't worked for what they've gotten, they don't take care of things. She says it's always more,
more, more.
When Nagin was voted in again, my only thought
was, there goes the neighborhood because all he
can do is gripe, whine and throw hissy fits.

I don't know if this has already been addressed here, but I can't get past this:

Bayou Buzz posts statements from Sen. Mary Landrieu, who calls into doubt the panel’s neutrality (”It is a great disappointment not only to Louisiana and the City of New Orleans, but also to those of us who previously had faith in the Commission’s impartiality”)

So the panel is not impartial and neutral because the didn't choose New Orleans? How does that work? If New Orleans was one of the chosen locations, that would prove the panel to be impartial?!?

I am looking forward to the time my company can close out its Katrina relief effort (last day is Dec 31, 2007)and do what our main mission is: To take care of the short term disaster relief needs of people afflicted by fire, natural disaster and etc...

I have seen people come in needing money for school uniforms, housing, food and etc and when we ask the basic questions of: where do you live, how bad is your home damaged, how can we help-we get the response that they are Katrina surviviors from NO and that they need help. Well we smile, take their information and pass it up to our supervisors and its becoming that we are starting to say "no" more frequently since we are a short-term relief agency.
BTW this incident occured in October 2007.

GSP
"Remember New Orleans" is reason why I as a gun owner will be voting this next presidential election.

P.S. It is because of NO, I would be apprehensive about helping victims of the next natural disaster unless they have started to take steps to help themselves.
P.S.S.(Thanks Boomer-I heard simuliar stories from other churches about what your brother saw too)

One of my younger brothers lives in Dallas, TX and went with his church group last Easter to restore some devastated homes in the New Orleans area. He stated it was a very educational experience, because the locals felt like they were entitled to their efforts to restore their homes and were just sitting around waiting on the Government and volunteer groups to rebuild for them. He said it was like being in the 3rd world in the neighborhood he was in and sent plenty of pictures to prove it. What ever happened to self reliance in this country? Oops I forgot I am thinking like an adult again.

It is strange - Katrina didn't hit NOLA, they celebrated that, then the levies that they neglected to spend the money elsewhere collapsed - that is the NOLA issue. The real victims of Katrina have moved on and rebuilding.

Trust me, we would love to senbd all of their citizens back.

Well, I'm upset that it's not all about the Oklahoma City Bombing of April 19, 1995. Or all about the F5 tornado that hit Oklahoma City on May 3, 1999.
Why can't it be all about MEMEMEME.....!

But seriously, Hurricane Katrina was about two years ago. How long do they need to get over it and start rebuilding? Mississippi, generally thought of as one of the most backward states in the country, was hit much worse than New Orleans. They didn't get even one tenth of the news coverage. But, they just rolled up their sleeves and got to work rebuilding themselves. Mayor "Chocolate City" Nagin and Governor Blanco just want to sit on their hands and watch the rest of the country do their work for them.
