Denver diversity training tape: Blame whitey

Have you ever had to undergo “diversity training?” I did when I worked at the Seattle Times. Corporations fork out big bucks to politically correct police who put you through insipid sensitivity exercises. These people lack common sense, humor, and nuance. Every reference to race, ethnicity, gender, or physical appearance is a firing offense. The trainers treat employees like kindergarteners. It’s excruciatingly painful and insulting–and always wrapped in white guilt. Under the guise of fighting stereotypes, the diversity-mongers inevitably engage in exactly the kind of behavior they claim to condemn.

One employee in Denver has had enough of the diversity racket. He’s blown the whistle on a Blame Whitey diversity video (hat tip - Slapstick Politics):

The city of Denver is showing its employees a diversity training video that portrays a white man as a narrow-minded buffoon - triggering allegations of “institutional racism” against Anglos.

“Right now, their diversity program is racially motivated against white males,” said Dennis Supple, a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning mechanic who has worked for the city 1 1/2 years.

The video, titled Laughing Matters - Think About It, is meant to show employees how humor at the expense of others diminishes respect in the workplace. The character who breaks all the rules is Billy, a white, blue-collar worker who’s a racist, sexist goofball.

In one scene, Billy is told that another employee named Carlos can’t do anything because he’s waiting for supplies.

“What’s his problem?” Billy says. “He can’t sell breakfast burritos without the supplies or he takes a siesta?”

Supple said the video violates his civil rights and that he’s considering taking the equity in his house to file a lawsuit to stop the city from showing it.

“Diversity, to me, doesn’t mean hammer the white guy,” Supple said. “Diversity means you have respect for everyone, regardless of their race, their gender, their religion, their sexual orientation.”

The video is like a bad, bad Onion parody. Here’s a snippet:

The Drunkablog notes that the city of Denver brags that the video “developed by the city’s Diversity Advisory Committee in collaboration with Channel 8, the city’s television channel, won second place in 2005 for Instruction/Training from the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors.”

In fact, the video was planned to be “the first in a series.”

Your tax dollars at work.

***

Wonder if the diversity advisors will be making any of these videos for college campuses?

Michelle, you and he are forgetting one very important thing. It’s perfectly alright, encouraged even, to discriminate against young, hetrosexual, caucasian, Christian men. Remember, the University of Delaware said all such men are automatically racist. Louie Farakhan can call the Pope a no-good cracker and that’s alright. Jessie Jackson can call New York “Hymie Town” with no problem. Mayor “Choclate” Nagin can say he only wants black people in New Orleans and that’s alright. They’re not racist.

Gee, where were you all through the 90’s?

Now that is an excellant quote. There’s nothing wrong with diversity training, because it’s a good way to avoid a hostile work environment and potential lawsuits. However, it’s tired and boring to keep perpetuating the false assumption that only a white male can be insensitve, or bigoted.

Now… America is still about 70% White… which means about 35% of America is White Male…

Hmmm… two thirds of the population have some form of “protections” that One third does not… how does that work under the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitituion?

These training sessions are brutal. Nobody ever wants to speak since it would be similar to walking on thin ice in late April. Why take the chance? Just sit through the eight to 16 hours and try to shut up.

At our training session, we watched one interesting video about Jane Elliot and her blue eye/brown eye experiment with 3rd graders. It was very telling - how quickly brainwashed these kids could be.

Within one hour, the presenter actually told us that 9/11 MUST be partly our fault and we need to find out what we could have done to deserve it. Unbelievable.

I walked on the thin ice. “If you’re wondering why these teenagers strap bombs to themselves, or Islamic extremists fly planes into buildings, all you have to do is watch that video,” I said, “those kids were brainwashed in three hours, imagine what the Islamic extremists can do to kids in nine years“.

    Room. Got. Quiet. :)

Later, at least three participants came to me - quietly - and thanked me for speaking up.

That is an attitude and a behavior that requires selflessness. Political correctness is selfish and self-serving.

Racism and bigotry happens. But not nearly as often as the politically correct left has us think and - regardless what the usual suspects say - is not institutionalized.

Racism and bigotry is not found in merely disagreeing with people, questioning that behavior, debating policies or behavior, or by being a conservative. For you lefties out there - repeat that last sentence as often as necessary until it sinks in.

When REAL racism and bigotry happens, it is perpetrated by an ignorant person who deserves to be treated like an ignorant person…discredited and ignored. I think there are very few people who would act as stupidly as the “example” in the video.

Now, hold on a second. Is the only racist/sexist/homophobic/whatever character here Billy? Or is it in every situation a different white male involved in the discrimination?

I haven’t seen the whole movie, and I’m not going to make any judgments without seeing the whole film myself. But if it’s one person doing everything wrong, then it’s quite a jump to say the movie is portraying all white men as racists. They could be using a “complex character” so they don’t have to show a racist black man, a racist Hispanic man, a sexist woman, a homophobic Asian, etc.

But they can get away with the portrayal because he is white, although I don’t think it’s labeling all white men as “Billy”. If every situation had a different white male acting like a tool, then I’d be bent out of shape.

I’m curious how the rest of the series goes– if it’s “Billy Strikes Back” and then “Return of the Minorities”, where at the end they blow up Billy’s trailer.

I did see a diversity seminar back when I was a grad student in Wyoming that was laughable, but the video authors actually used different races and genders to bring up different inappropriate workplace behavior. My favorite bit was this one very attractive woman hitting on a guy in the mail room, and when she left, the man crossed his arms and shook his head. 80% of the room burst into laughter.

But it shows that you can make a video that doesn’t single out a specific race or gender.

Had they simply put up a placard at the beginning that said, “You are about to meet ‘Billy’, a composite character that is not meant to single out any one race or gender”, I’m sure it would have allayed any concerns.

The whole diversity training thing is based on the belief that white males have been racists and in the past and always will be racists–and the only changes they will ever make in their behavior are the changes they are forced to make.

I went through some diversity training of my own a long time ago. I was in the sixth grade when the schools were integrated in SC. Before that most of what I knew of black people came from hearing the racists utterings of the pre-civil rights era. It is my considered opinion that integrating the schools was one of the best things to happen to race relations in this country. By interacting with the black students in my classes I learned to see past such superficial things as skin color and judge people on their own merits. This was one of the most valuable lessons I ever learned.

Unfortunately, there are many people who think white males incapable of learning such lessons. That is a racist attitude in its own right.

I’m tired of “diversity” being used as if it is always a good thing. There are lots of examples where this isn’t true. Different does not automatically mean “better” and even more different, just for the sake of being different, is not a strength.

One of the goals of political correctness is to make people either believe, or say they believe, that which is observably not true.

That video sounds about right. To me, diversity training means every color is okay as long as it’s not white. If you’re white, you’re responsible for the slave trade, colonization, oppression of blacks, the opium wars and any other grievance one can think off.

With respect to religion, every religion is okay and it’s fine if a Muslim demands a prayer room, a statue of the Buddha is placed in the office corridor, and children are encouraged to participate in worship during a school visit to a temple. But don’t you dare call that holiday Christmas or even mention the phrase “In God we trust”.

    Yep. Diversity indeed.

/sarc on I wonder what would happen if the “racist” was a member of a protected class? /sarc off

I already know the answer, and I live with racism everyday in Memphis. Racism that can be blatant by the comments of the local politicians, the action taken by various employees where I do business when compared to the way they treat customers of their own ethnicity, and consistent demonization of my cultural heritage when I refuse to participate in the mandatory celebrations of diversity.

One point that needs to be considered repeatately is the perspective that drives race-based affirmative action and diversity training: Christian, white, gun supporting, family oriented (one man/one woman), educated, males of white privledge is the enemy

I have heard this quite frequently during my time at U of M by the sociology and english departments, the types of articles in the school paper, and the listing of various causes my tuition is supporting (hint: Read you taxpayers are supporting via my GI Bill)

Lots of good posts regarding some of the racist comments made by al, jessie, nagin, and etc. Of course, don’t forget “Islamorage Boy” too! These things need to be continously brought back up to remind others that racism is not restricted to one ethnic group.

Several years ago I used to attend Norfolk Admirals hockey games and would drop by the local fastfood restruant for a cheap meal, but one day something caught my attention. I noticed a cashier treating a customer with the common courtesies, and then suddenly changed to being very rude to the next customer. She did this by the rolling of the eyes, raising her voice, wrinkling of her nose, and snorting. My first instinct is that this cashier is having a problem understanding the customer and the frustration carried over or she was friends with her previous customer. Her next customer she treated nicely (without the eye rolling, etc)and saw an ethnic comparison between the cashier, and the customers she was treating with common courtesy. HHHmmm that’s odd…However, I watched, listened, took notes for over 30 minutes. Counted the number of customers she served, the ethnicity/ gender/approximate age of the customer and noticed that she was only giving the common courtesies to customers that shared her ethnic traits. Her customers that didn’t share her ethnic traits treated her with respect and gave the common courtesies even though they were being treated as nothing more than a number. While some people may not consider this racism, the fact that the cashier was treating (by her actions)consistently customers diffrently with the only people being treated considerately were members of her ethnic group. BTW-I wore my Bill Jack jeans, a t-shirt, and a cheap pair of sneakers (I looked like a Portsmouth Dock worker) and was treated the same as a person wearing a suit/tie that shared my ethnic characteristics. Racism doesn’t have to be restricted to merely verbal slurs, but done by action. It is this kind of racism that can be the most subtle, and yet most venousmous to the soul.

Now when the time comes that I refuse to teach or serve a person of a diffrent ethnic group consistently, then by all means bring me in for some diversity training-but until then, get off my case, leave me alone and let me do my job as a professional.

    GSP :)

One was outsourced. They were all incredibly poorly done. The racism implicit in the moderators’ stance was appalling. During the second indoctrination session, I watched three guys from the South having to suck it up on one side of the room re the Confederate Flag which is banned on company property. I reminded the moderator that it was actually the Battle Flag of the Confederacy. My mother is from the South and I really resent the incessant slams that part of the country endures. The moderator didn’t have an answer just huffed that it’s against company policy because it offends African Americans. I then said that there was a segment of the Hispanic population that was offended by Old Glory. Should we stop flying the U. S. flag as well? Everyone wants to play the victim. I’m sick of it. This thing was a big deal - every year we had to stop what we were doing and spend 2-3 hours in an indoctrination session. And it was MANDATED from the White House, the Clinton White House that is. When Willy got in that little unpleasantness with Monica, all that BS went away. About 2 or 3 years after Willy left office it came back in the form of online “training” which everybody ignored.

I’ll have to say one thing though. The POSH sort of worked because the woman’s word was always taken over the man’s and the man was guilty until he could prove his innocence. If you were charged with harassment whether you were convicted or not it was a career ender. Nobody wanted you working for them.

the video could have shown, a white person, a hispanic (la raza), and a black person all being ‘racist’. all three examples would have been balanced and enlightening. that, yes, we are all capable of being racist, sexist or whatever.

I only pray I get some of these “socially astute” judges to hear my cases!

Ah, yss, “diversity trainng.” I remember it well: it was once instrumental in costing me my job when I let slip what I really thought about it. Didn’t get me fired right away; but I knew that when the time came to lay somebody off my name just made the top of the list. And so it came to pass…

At that company, the magic word was “inclusion.” As if “diversity” was getting a bad name. New label, same old stuff - including video of the green/brown eyes humiliation inflicted on a captive audience of adults that made my blood boil.

The bottom line for “diversity” is, I don’t need to get in touch with my Inner Bigot.

I refuse to feel guilty for who I am, or for the provenance of my birth, just because a few cynical, authoritarian-minded, proto-Thought-Police feel that politically correct victim-groups need me as an “oppressor” to explain the life results they get from their own world view.

I don’t have anything to “prove” - including proving that I’m not a bigot.

As far as “diversity” is concerned, in our society there are three basic kinds of racist:

    1. The old, cracker-style racist epitomized by Bull Conner, the KKK and George Wallace. Not extinct yet, but also no longer given the respect or influential place in society they once had.

    2. The new-style condescending racist. To feel superior themselves, these people secretly believe that “people of color” are inherently inferior, and must be held to a separate - and much lower - standard of personal achievement, social behavior and individual responsibility.

Condesending racists are malignantly narcisisstic; true racial equality is the last thing they want, because then there would be no “little brown people” dependent on them for soul-sucking programs like welfare and two-wrongs-make-a-right “fixes” like Affirmative Action.

Nothing infuriates condescending racists more more than a “person of color” wandering off the dependency reservation - Michelle could write and say much about that, I suspect.

    3. The, “Everybody’s a racist but me!” racist. Easy to recognize by their obsession with ostentatiously finding racism in others. Arguably a subset of condescending racists, because they too need “oppressed peoples of color” to justify their self-image as crusaders for justice and equality; what distinguishes them from ordinary condescending racists is that “people of color” themselves can fit into this class (see Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton).

If these people can’t find real racist behavior, they’ll either make it up (e.g. Tawana Brawley and “Free Mumia!”) or fall back on mumbo-jumbo terminology like “structural racism.” What they’re interested in, aside from stroking their own egos, is to be able to dictate to others about how they should live, act and think at all times.

Not surprisingly, a lot of the “diversity” pushers come from this group.

What’s so bizarro-world in today’s climate of Political Correctness is that most of the focus on attacking “racist” behavior remains on the cracker-style racists - the one group that has already been thoroughly stigmatized and rejected - while the second and third groups thrive.

No, seriously. I just don’t know what happened to treating people like human beings. If you watch the show “Mad Men”, you realize where this stuff had to come from. Sure, it is over dramatized, but there was a great deal of harrassment at one point. However, there has also been a great deal of blowback to the point where employers feel helpless aas if they have no recourse against horrible employees. They feel like if they fire someone they will be hit with a discrimination lawsuit within minutes of them being terminated or even disciplined for a minor infraction.

PC has once again taken things too far. I remember when I was 18, I went in to apply for a job as a Cal State Park Aide and was told by a Ranger friend of mine that there was no way I was going to get hired. I asked him why and he told me straight up that I was the wrong sex, color and religion. Once again, the goofy white guy…even though 25% injun, didn’t pay off.

Just treat others the way you would want others to treat your children. Never treat someone in any way that you would ever have to find yourself explaining yourself to your wife or mom.

Also remember…you are who you are when no one else is around.

Mr. Mom2jack spent the summer jumping through hoops to become a firefighter. One test/presentation was a bunch of “scenarios” and the test taker must choose from multiple questions the “right” answer. So of course, they all involve the WHITE firefigher and how he interacts with victims of different races and sexual orientations, or how he and his brothers interact with minority co-workers. To which I mused, it sure seems to me like they plan on only hiring white males. Which would make it a racist organization. Diversity training backfires - again.

Snippet of a recap from Episode 2-5 of Rescue Me, titled, Sensitivity, where the crew has to go to sensitivity training. “Tommy” is Denis Leary, who is excellent in this episode (and series).

The crew meets up in a classroom, where they are told that the class will last eight hours. They all sigh and roll their eyes. The instructor, Don, stands up and says that he knows they don’t want to be there. Franco points out that their neighborhood is short a rig, so they’re upset. Don asks how many of them would identify themselves as prejudiced. No one raises a hand at first, which fits right into Don’s plan, and he charges ahead with his point about how no one thinks that he or she is prejudiced.

But Don’s point is ruined when Tommy raises a hand. Don asks whom Tommy thinks he’s prejudiced against. Tommy lists off, “Chevy Neons that cost twelve grand to buy but have eight-thousand-dollar paint jobs and nine spics inside smoking weed. That’s one thing.” Don interrupts to try to object to the term “spic,” but Franco says it’s okay, since he is one. Tommy continues, “Crazy Chink broads who don’t know how to drive in the first place and now they got cell phones stuck to their ears while they’re doing sixty-five miles an hour down Sixth Avenue. The crazy Chinks on bikes with ten pounds of Chinese food strapped to the handlebars.” Don interrupts again to say that “Chink” is a problem word. Garrity raises his hand and says that he’d rather be called a Chink than a Gook. Don tries to list off all the terms that are offensive to the Chinese, but Franco interrupts to say that spics get ripped off when it comes to racial slurs, because they only have one. Franco lists off a number of slurs for Irish people, and Italians as well, with help from the crew. Tommy lists off some for Jewish people, and the whole crew chimes in with slurs for black people. Don is stunned at the litany of slurs being tossed around, and says that he wants them to watch a video. They really need David Brent to come in and facilitate this thing. With his guitar.

Don starts the video, which features a clueless white guy making inadvertent racially charged remarks to a number of minorities. Specifically, he thinks a black guy must watch sports, and refers to Asians as “you people.” In the end, everyone is friends again, and the white guy hangs out with the black guy, the Asian woman, and a Jewish guy wearing a yarmulke and eating a bagel. When the video ends, Don asks what they learned. Tommy supplies, “Only white people can be racist?” Don says that’s not the point, and Tommy lists off a number of racial groups that hate each other. Laura laughs with everyone else. Tommy adds that the only reason they’re there is because someone on their crew called someone else a name. Tommy stands up and says that this whole thing is just to cover the bureaucrats’ asses, so that if a disgruntled female firefighter files a suit, they can claims that the crew couldn’t have done it, because they took sensitivity training. Tommy concludes, “Next time I run into a burning building and refuse to bring out someone who’s the same color as me, that’s when you can bring my angry, sober, pink, Irish ass back down here.” Tommy says he’s going out for a smoke and walks out. And he’s got a point, and then again, he really doesn’t, but that’s why I like this show. Don sends everyone out on a break.

After all that, they were still farced to eventually hire others, as they still could not get blacks to hire on. It still boiled down to interest in the job, the ability to pass the tests, and the ability to do the job.

Yet no one at any time made a single noise in the paper or anywhere else about the blatant racism of the program which is still going on to this day, and even has it’s own office downtown run by a captain and a chief.
