Mitt and the Muslim question
Update: New developments.
***
Allahpundit’s been tracking the brouhaha over remarks Mitt Romney apparently made about the presence, or lack thereof, of Muslims in his Cabinet. His conclusion:
A politician with a prejudice has two options: either keep it to himself or, more cynically, go public with it and use it to wring votes from like-minded people. The dumbest course, especially in the post-”Macaca” YouTube age, is to cop to it but only in private.
Well, we will see what Romney is made of in the aftermath of this kerfuffle. Will he back away from supporting common-sense national security profiling? Or will he continue to speak hard truths about what’s needed to win the war on jihad at home?
Undecided conservative voters are watching.

Given the recent arrest of the muslim FBI/CIA spy, I’d be extra cautious screening candidates for high level posts. Romney should stick to his guns.
If a moderate Muslim that could be actually found and is loyal to the USA then I would have no problem with a moderate in the cabinet. Until then leave them out of gov’t. The New Testament in various places always tells us to obey the gov’t authorities whereas the koran doesn’t.
talk is cheap. your right Michelle, we will see if he sticks to his words or if he flip-flops.
Should we put pedophiles in government just to show diversity? You don’t let anyone in that doesn’t fully support our way of life; which incidentally has been preferred by 99.9% of legal immigrants to this great land. So far; we haven’t seen that any Muslim supports our dream (remember the American one). CAIR is the prime example that our Muslim brethren that are supposed to be American’s, don’t. So excuse me if I think Mitt is right on this point. Prove to me that you are American; first and foremost, then I will give you the opportunity. By the way; I was born in Germany, it’s the place of my birth, it’s not my homeland, that’s reserved for America.
Wow, I’m lost for a comment. I’ll just sit back and wait.
I think you’re missing the point. Romney didn’t say that he didn’t want Muslims in his Cabinet for security reasons. Romney said that Muslims didn’t make up a large enough percentage of the population to earn a token spot.
No any woman or non-Caucasian person who makes it to his Cabinet, should he win, will be seen as a token pick instead of as the best person for the job.
What a jerk. I’m so glad he’s out of Massachusetts.
Interesting that everyone questions what Romney said or didn’t say about Muslims in his cabinet should he get elected President, but NO ONE has questioned what dozens or hundreds of individuals, including the MSM, that have ridiculed and questioned his Mormon religion.
Rusty, aside from my disagreement with your argument, can you clarify what you mean here…it does not make sense…. there are more women than men in normal populations (excluding countries that kill baby girls)
No any woman or non-Caucasian person who makes it to his Cabinet, should he win, will be seen as a token pick instead of as the best person for the job.
Good point Blame Americalast. (I like your handle by the way).
correction to my post #8 above, last paragraph was from Rusty’s post..not my words, his.
mia culpa
feebie, are you saying that a person is unqualified to serve as a Cabinet member solely based on the fact that he or she practices Islam? Follow-up question: Do you personally know any Muslims?
No candidate comes even close to Tom Tancredo’s astute statesmanship and potriotism. His stand on all crirical issues (like illegal immigration and Islamic terror) has been clear and patriotic. There is no doubt that Tom Tancredo, in all his limitations, is who America needs: http://www.teamtancredo.typepad.com
Since it is nearly impossible to tell who is a moderate Muslim from those who support terrorism without waterboarding. I suggest until and when moderate Muslims demostrate against the radicals who seem to have taken over their religion. I do not think one should even consider appointing anyone to a cabinet post who does not adhere to Judio-Christian values.
Darkine, I can tell by Feebie’s post that the answer are likely No, Yes.
Sorry Feebie, I just didn’t like Darkine’s tone.
Dakine and Rusty, good luck. I’ll keep my takes to myself. I’m tired, and I’ve carried enough water for Islam the last couple days, and I’m feeling like an honorary. It’s pointless to debate with some posters here, especially if they lie, but Feebie and some others can be reasonable.
In closing brothas:
ASSALAMU ALAIKUM.
Buck I, I hope the lie part was not aimed at me. If it is, well then I don’t really know what to ya.
What to say to ya. Sorry. Connection glitch.
Not you at all John Ansell. You posted while I was typing. I think you are a reasonable guy, even though we often disagree.
Oh yeah, I wanna try this with you again.
O!! H!!
I feel really bad that Romney mentioned the Muslims at all. They are a people who first pledge their allegiance to the Nation of Islam and Sharia Law. Neither of which are compatible with being an American and living by the laws of our democracy. All 6 million of them are here and demand far more attention than their social contributions justify. Foot baths and all. The one Muslim in Congress has proven so far that one is one too many (swear them in on what).
Why should a Muslim be part of the cabinet by virtue of being Muslim? I think that is the issue at hand. For the sake of “Diversity”?
If he gets voted in and is the most suitable person for the job, who cares what he believes in? Keyword here being suitable for the job, of course.
Most of the current field are feckless, spineless and unwilling to make a concrete stand except for: more of the same old stuff. The conservatism flavor-of-the-day variety of politics has passed its born on date. How much more deck chair rearranging are we going to settle for? Cutting taxes vs. eliminating them? Reducing bureaucracy vs. eliminating complete agencies? Personally, I’m tired of the media template and the way we’re served-up our candidates. More than a year out all we’ve seen is a two person race for each party. It’s pathetic.
I don’t think anyone should be excluded as long as they go through the vetting process just like everyone else. THAT should have been Mitt’s response but instead he stuck his foot in his mouth. But, if that’s what he thinks, then he’s ok to say it, but some voters may not like it. But some will think “woohoo!”
Is he going to appoint a Catholic, or Protestant, or a Scientologist to his cabinet. Why worry about one religion being represented and not all the others.
Feebie, I mentioned women because they are incredibly underrepresented on SCOTUS, the Cabinet, and Capitol Hill. I fear that if Romney wins and he selects a woman to his Cabinet that this quote will come back to haunt him. Same for any underrepresented group of people.
This country doesn’t have that many Muslims, Hindus, American Indians, etc. Should they all be disqualified because the demographics don’t match up? Because that’s what Romney said. And that’s despicable.
As controversial as it may seem, I wholeheartedly agree with Zelsdorf.
According to Brigette Gabriel (Because They Hate), a Muslim that is sworn in on the Koran instead of Bible has permission to lie because the Koran is #1. This has already happened (in MN). IMHO, not good.
This seems to be spin. Romney did not say he would not accept advice from Muslims–he said he saw no need for a ” Cabinet” position for such an advisor.
I think Ijaz is praying–and working very hard–for Hillary to become president. If Ijaz is so worked up about this issue he should now ask Hillary the same question.
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/11/27/482645.aspx
NBC reports that : “A search of FEC records, finds that a Mansoor Ijaz has given $23,000 to Democratic candidates and committees from 1997 to 2000, including $2,000 to Hillary Clinton’s 2000 Senate run and $15,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.”
Here’s a solution: A Muslim candidate for a Cabinet post will be water boarded first to determine where his or her loyalties lie.
No charge for that advice to the Romney campaign.
Dakine - Rusty’s comment confused me…it happens. No i am not saying that. And yes, my best friend is persian….and his mother loves to feed me….yummy. But they are not the fanatical practicing Muslims and do speak out about their religions good points as well as their faults.
They are not big fans of the extremists.
You read Rusty’s posting and articulate it better…perhaps I then can do the same….
With all the grave shortcomings possessed by all the GOP candidates, this is the sort of thing people are paying attention to? What a silly story.
I’m seeing two contradictory reactions on the right. One is that Romney had better announce that no Muslim will ever get in the door of his administation. The other is that he’d better repudiate any sort of religious bigotry.
I would really like to know his position on this too. We already enough problems with Muslims of questionable loyalty infiltrating the FBI and CIA all we need is another security risk directly advising at the Cabinet level of Government. If anything we need to reduce the size of the Cabinet down to maybe the size of a small chest or dresser draw. It would be a great way to start curtailing the runaway government spending of our stolen incomes.
Bhishma…your right…the 2 best candidates to help America out of this mess get no coverage either from inside or out of their own party. What does that tell you about the Republican Party?
Fair enough feebie…thanks for the response. I’m fairly certain that many here don’t share your view, however. BTW, I realize that you probably don’t much care for the “MM.com cyber version of me”, but for what it’s worth, I really appreciate the generally rational and civil nature of what you have to say on this site, especially when addressing those with whom you disagree.
SOme times I can be a witchee-poo. Im just feisty.
