In response to the Denver diversity video debacle, a military reader shared his own diversity lunacy story:
“I’m not sure this tops the Denver story but this past August the Army Intelligence and Security Command’s (INSCOM) Equal Opportunity (EO) promulgated a list of forbidden words. Some of the words on this list wouldn’t be used in the work place by most people with any common sense — but some of the words on the list are ridiculous and epitomize the overreaching hysteria of the PC speech police. I’m sending a screen shot of the email message that accompanied the forbidden word list, as well as a screen shot of the forbidden words list (2 columns). On the screen shots you can see that I’m logged into my Army AKO email when viewing both the email and the attached forbidden words list — I did this so you can be assured that they were circulated via the Army’s AKO email system and are not something that was made up. However, I’ve blacked out my account information as I do **not** want to be identified as the source. I don’t know whether this list was published Army-wide or DoD-wide or whether it was just an INSCOM project, but note that the EO Advisor says this list was the product of the Army’s EO School, which suggests that this would have been sent Army-wide.”

I can agree with the really hard core racial insults they have never been acceptable in the Military, but come on shouldn’t they be more worried about dealing with gathering intelligence or least trying to display some.
What mouth breather created this list? I give you the following words/phrases:
‘caught red handed’ : meaning caught with the blood still on their hands (from their crime)
‘Oriental’ : well if you’re from the Orient…!!
‘Black list’ : a phrase that has nothing to do with race, never did
‘Blackmail’ : what the heck synonym is there for the crime of blackmail??? “not really white mail”???
‘Black ball’ : obviously the writer has never been to a fraternity vote or many other votes that use the cup and little back and white balls to vote
‘White lie’ : to be replaced with a phrase of 27 words meaning “white lie”

I see that “Jew Boy” made the list, but “Jew Girl” was omitted. What’s up with that?!

Just want to make sure I get it straight. The sentence “The Private’s wife just had a baby girl” is offensive?

May I ask, to whom are these sentences offensive?
I love that boy and girl are on that list, lol! But props to the military to at least including phrases that non-whites might use towards whites.

The huge problem with this kind of list, since a word is not explicitly forbidden, then it must be ok. That is the path they are headed in. And then since that will still leave people “offended”, they will just have to ban all speech.

They had better have a combat zone exclusion for foul language. During my combat tour, language (including mine and I was a senior officer) degenerated in direct proportion to your time in theater (especially when referring to our enemy). But I paled in comparison to my Sergeant Major, whose language was very “colorful” (can I say that?).

Buck: You are correct there is discretion - however, let me pose a situation. Worker A dislikes Worker B (who cares why). Worker B comes in and says to Worker C “I heard Carl’s wife had a boy”. Because “the list” exists, Worker A can press it. Worker B said a banned word. What is the Army supposed to do at that point?

I am an Indian you jerks. (Cherokee to be specific.) I am advising my kids not to join the army.
I always thought a guinea pig was a somewhat large, fluffy and cute-looking rodent, commonly kept as a pet. I’ve never in my life heard of anyone using that as an epithet.

Buck I ~ You’re missing the very important point that in this very PC world, context no longer matters, only that no-one’s feelings get hurt. So, no, context does not matter. And in fact, things are VERY OFTEN taken out of context. The first example that comes to mind is the recent persecution of Rush Limbaugh.
Second, I agree that I’ve never seen the right not to be offended in the constitution. If someone choses to call someone else a racial epitat, why can’t they?
A wise person once said that the first amendment was to protect unpopular speech, and that popular speech doesn’t need protecting. Seems like that exactly fits the bill here, don’t you think?
