Seattle mayor warns kids: Take these eco-light bulbs or Santa and the reindeer will drown

Via Orbusmax, KVI talk show host Kirby Wilbur in Seattle heard from a listener who attended Mayor Greg Nickels’ ~~Christmas~~ holiday tree-lighting ceremony. All religious references are discouraged by the local government–except if the religion is environmentalism. So Nickels used the event to preach the evils of global warming to the kids in attendance. He warned the children that if they don’t use energy-efficient light bulbs (Gore bulbs), Santa and the reindeer will perish amid melting icecaps. Here’s the clip recounting Nickel’s grinchy lecture:

Do you know most CFL bulbs contain mercury? If the bulb breaks in your house, you’re looking at a cost of $1,000 (or more) to have professionals clean up the mess. And you NEED to have professionals clean it up; mercury poisoning’s not fun.

Not to mention the environmental threat from mercury seeping into the ground, the water, etc.

Nearly 360 U.S. mayors representing more than 55.5 million Americans have pledged to dramatically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

The effort and its leader — Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels — have been lauded by the “King of Climate Change,” Al Gore, and celebrated in the pages of Vanity Fair.

But although the vows may have generated warm, fuzzy feelings about helping Mother Earth, an early analysis finds that the cities are not on track for making needed cuts in planet-warming pollutants.

The cities signing on to the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement want to meet or beat the goals of the international Kyoto Protocol, which means reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 7 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. Every state but South Dakota has a city onboard.

Not only are the cities expected to miss the mark, a report released Monday states, “Many will miss their goals by a wide margin.”

Wow, that’s some miracle… from missing the goal in January to beating 1990 by 8% within 11 months.

2) City of Seattle - Office of Sustainability and Environment’s Inventory and Report: Seattle’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions, April 2002

Just a few caveats I found:

The City Wide inventory is different from the City Operations inventory in that it uses the geographic City limits to define the “boundary” of what is included (with one major exception, SeaTac Airport; see note 4b.) Most of the data in the City Wide inventory has been provided by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and includes all the major greenhouse gas emissions that actually occur within the City limits including the region’s major source of greenhouse gas emissions - traffic - as well as emissions associated with industry, heating all the homes and businesses in the City, etc. Because only emissions within the city limits are counted (with the noted exception) unlike the City Operations inventory it does not include indirect emissions (also called upstream emissions.) It does include a sub-set of the City and Utilities Operations inventory (those that occur within City limits.)

Of the list of bad gases, CO2 was ranked the lowest with a global warming potential (GWP) of 1 and the leading industrial gases are Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) (GWP=140 to 6,300), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) (GWP = 6,500 to 9,200 and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) (GWP = 23,900) are man-made gases used or generated by a variety of industrial activities.

Umm, didn’t Goracle claim that CO2 is the #1 threat? Well, read on:

HFCs, PFCs and SF6 are by far the most potent of the greenhouse gases in their ability to trap atmospheric heat. To account for these different potencies, the GHG emissions for these gases have been converted to be equivalent to the weight of CO2, termed ‘carbon dioxide equivalent’

Umm fuzzy math?

But what about the 8% reduction? Read on:

City and Utilities Operations
” The City has substantially reduced GHG emissions attributable to its operations and projections are that the trend will continue. Kyoto Protocol calls for US emissions to be cut by seven percent below 1990 levels by 2012. Comparing 2000 to 1990, the City has already cut its emissions by 48 percent, primarily because it divested its interest in the Centralia Coal Plant . Other reductions are due to flaring methane at a closed City landfill and recycling programs that have reduced the amount of solid waste handling.
” Projections are that by 2010, the City will cut its emissions by 84 percent compared to 1990. In addition to the landfill reductions the other major reduction is due to City Light’s commitment of no net GHG emissions by 2003.
” Without the City’s recycling and energy conservation programs, the City’s emissions in 2000 would have been more than twice as large as they were.

Citywide
” Citywide emissions in 2000 remained essentially constant compared to 1990 but by 2010 are projected to increase by nearly 20 percent over 1990 levels.
” In 2000, transportation accounted for 56 percent of Seattle’s GHG emissions compared to 31 percent for the nation as a whole. Transportation accounts for a higher percentage of our GHG emissions than the rest of the country because our region uses less coal or other GHG- emitting electric power sources.
” To fulfill the Kyoto Protocol goal of reducing emissions to seven percent below 1990 levels means that Seattle’s emissions target would be 6.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 equivalents (about 480,000 tonnes less than current levels.) To reach a forty percent reduction target would mean that Seattle’s emissions would be 4.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents in 2010.
” Additional emissions were avoided through such measures as the changes to the City’s energy code that require gas heated buildings to be more energy efficient and the regions’ various transportation programs - transit, heavy rail, bicycle commuting and van and car pools - that increase mobility and reduce the use of single occupancy vehicles. However, data by which to estimate emissions reductions due to these measures are not available.

We already know that short of a full load in HOV, all the others “mobility” measures are less effective, in terms of GHG & operational cost, than me jumping in my car and going whenever & wherever I want. But I digress.

So what do we have so far on Seattle’s effort to reduce GHG?
1) Narrowly define the city limits & only a proportion of SeaTac;
2) Carbon offsetting & sequestration,
3) Take only the municipal assets & emissions and brag about the marvelous reductions and play down the at-large (combined public/private) GHGs.

If Goracle decides to jump in the POTUS sweepstakes, any takers that he’ll want Mayor Nickels as the VP or appointed chief of the new Ministry of Sustainability (ubercabinet position)– to whom the EPA, DOT, Army Corps of Engineers et al will report.

I need to feel good about myself and not over-analyze the situation!

And I think that whole 8% reduction in CO2 gases for Seattle is a bunch of hooey unless a nuclear power plant came on line since 1990 or 8% of their industry has relocated to China. Oh wait, can I use the phrase “nuclear power plant” or has that phrase also been banned by the PC police???

Point 3: We have lived in our custom designed, solar heated house for 27 years now. The architect designed the house with florescent lighting tubes in all rooms. In some places, we have supplemented the florescents with low-voltage halogen track lighting for specific illumination tasks. I can tell you that the tubes last a long time, years in fact. The four hanging incandescent light fixtures in my hallways now have GE and/or Phillips florescent bulbs (the enclosed globular ones, not the ones that look like pigs tails) and have lasted over a year.

I understand the reluctance to convert to florescents, and I understand the health issues of dealing with burned out bulbs (which is manageable, BTW).

TXRose, you don’t have a choice. You can’t switch. Neither does anybody else who has suffered mercury poisoning in the past. You can’t convert without placing your life at risk. You definitely need to stay away from these lights.

Living in a florescent lighted house is not onerous, I can attest. And the electricity savings are real.
