You know those hotel workers who are supposedly “doing the jobs Americans won’t do?” Looks like one of the jobs the hotel workers won’t do is wash dirty glasses properly. MyFoxAtlanta, a local news station in Georgia, went undercover earlier this month to investigate housekeeping sanitary practices at several hotels–and once you watch the results of their hidden-camera probe, I guarantee you’ll never want to drink out of hotel cups or mugs again (via Duane at The Black Informant with a hat tip to Ace of Spades). Thank you Michelle for pointing out the cleaning habits of illegal immigrants. I had to watch the video twice and still didn’t see or hear any mention of the housekeepers immigration status. Thank God you were here to point it out for me. If I didn’t know you were so wise, I would have thought you….yes you had jumped the shark. I must get better at reading between the lines.
Be nice to the room cleaners. They can do all sorts of things in your absence.I know of some that have put pin holes in condoms when guests were rude.Leave a dollar by the coffee machine. Thank them for good service. Make them feel human?

Yes, these are management issues. Hiring illegals is always a mangement issue.
The whole profiling is racism bit regarding the assumption of their immigration status is just a red herring. Try talking to a maid and you’ll see that they don’t speak English. By and large, these people have little education and come from a third world country. Try explaining germ theory to someone with a fifth grade education that comes from a country where poor sanitation is rampant and you only receive a vacant stare.
Concerned Citizen, have you ever worked in the food and beverage or hospitality industries? I have…in high school and college. The nastiest, laziest folks I encountered were US citizens of all sorts of racial and ethnic backgrounds. This whole illegal immigrant angle is a major reach, and if that was what Malkin was going for, then she should be ashamed of herself.

For what these corporate hotel chains charge for rooms we expect better than this!
For now though, heat some water in the coffeemaker (if the room has one) and use that to sanitize any glasses before you drink out of them.
Or, ask for plastic, individually-wrapped drinking cups.
This of course is a symptom of a general lowering of standards the past 25 years.
Without exception, anyone working in foodservice and personal care (including chambermaids) should receive and pass a pre-employment health exam which looks for TB, hepatitis and other communicable diseases and periodic re-exams along with a criminal background check to weed out sociopaths.
The criminal record check should serve to weed out illegal aliens.
That might be against the religion of the “Deregulatit” crowd … however we see here without adequate regulation we wind up with a “race to the bottom” where the corner cutters come out ahead of the game (in the short run anyway).

There’s always an angle on this site, and the angle is fairly predictable, yet this time I’m really surprised.
The angle or agenda is set right out, there is no confusion that this is supposed to be an immigration issue. MM has never stated an intolerance toward LEGAL immigration to my knowledge, so we’re clearly talking about ILLEGAL immigration.
A video is shown with clearly nonwhiteanglo, female chamber maids doing disgusting things in hotel rooms. Obviously everyone is grossed out. All of the women “look” hispanic, or maybe one may be black.
Where are we at the end of this video?
1. Take I. “These women are illegal immigrants(although never stated or referenced), and look at all of the nasty things they do while here, snort, and these are the jobs that Americans won’t do.” Any fool in their right mind knows that Americans of every class, race, creed, or gender are capable of being disgusting as service industry employees. We’ve all either had first hand experience, or have seen investigative undercover stings. To imply that this type of grosteque behavior is unique to illegal immigrants or particularly hispanic ones is terribly, patently offensive.
2. Take II
Showing the video with the women describe as above, and never ascertaining whether they are actually illegal immigrants is just as bad if not worse. Not only is MM asking the viewer to make an negative opinion on the cleanliness of “immigrants”(likely hispanic), but yet there is no effort to ascertain if they are in fact even illegal. She’s asking the viewer to take an already offensive premise, and then make the assumption that the women are in fact illegal, based on their physical appearance, and the stereotype of who would do this type of job. Again, how do we know these women aren’t American? We’re supposed to assume that they are not because, “well, look at them, and come on look at their behavior”. It’s really sick.
I’m not sure if this is an effort to goad Geraldo into some more buffoonery, for pub., or what, but this takes the cake.
I don’t even need to discuss the reactions like, #103 for example. It’s expected and predictable.

Of course, anyone who has stayed in a hotel can attest that MANY of the maids do not speak English well and probably aren’t able to understand a course in sanitation if it is provided in English. Look, my family immigrated LEGALLY from South America (and Italy). I am telling you right now, when we visited Argentina, besides the water restrictions, my mother was TEN TIMES THE GERM PHOBE down there. I am NOT saying they are Uncleanly people. I am just saying that the standards in Latin american countries are in NO WAY REGULATED and what they are here.
I also believe these folks, ethnicity aside, are NOT DOING THE JOB they are paid to do (unless there job is to make people sick). If they were trained another way, then they are cutting corners and that is WRONG, if they weren’t trained, well…I can tell you from a recent trip to Mexico (Ixtapa)….I watched our housekeeper right in front of us clean the glasses in the sink with non-pottable water… So after she left, I just ran the glasses down to the kitchen and asked for new glasses. This is completely acceptable and they way things are…

I am not in favor of illegal immigration. I am in favor of very high standards of health and cleanliness.
This is a hotel management issue. The housekeeping management in these hotels is lax and needs to be called on the carpet. Whether the maid speaks English, Spanish or Bulgarian, the hotel must train them to high standards of cleanliness, and insist on it as a condition of their continued employment.
If they are illegal they should not be there in the first place, but I can assure you that white men and women born in this country can and do violate public health standards everyday in this country in many of the hotels and restaurants you frequent.
I have to ask – what is the point of all this? Are you trying to drum up support for your cause, or reinforce the most vulgar, negative stereotypes amongst people who already believe them? I once naively thought it was the former, but if that is the case, you have failed. Miserably.
I am an unapologetic and proud liberal, and like many unapologetic and proud liberals, I share your stance on immigration. However, I find myself increasingly embarrassed to admit it. You have taken a perfectly sane, rational policy – i.e., if you would like to come into and/or stay in our country, please do so legally – and tethered it to an intensely hateful, deeply paranoid strain of xenophobia, pandering to the nastiest, ugliest underbelly of American politics. You should be embarrassed, if not deeply ashamed. History will not be kind to you.

#197 It definitely calls for speculation but I think it’s a legit question. The only way Michelle is able to make this into an immigration issue is because the maid is Hispanic. She’s assumed that the maid is illegal when there’s absolutely no proof of that whatsoever. Had the maid in the video been white or black, would Michelle have still been able to try and make a case for this being an immigration problem?
I think, Mookie, that they consider the fact that the maid is being… ahem…less than sanitary as some sort of evidence as to her legal/illegal status.
That is the only way most of the screed posted here makes any sense.
